The warm mineral pools of Radium Hot Springs (p 68) were used for generations by the Ktunaxa people for relaxation and healing. In 1890 Englishman Rolond Stuart realized the marketing potential of the springs and bought the land to develop it for public use. Stuart returned to England at the start of the First World War. The hot springs pool and bathhouse were purchased by the Canadian government, who would later designate the land surrounding the springs and the road a national park. Beautiful Highway 93S and Kootenay National Park are today's result of that transaction. Visit Radium Hot Springs and discover why these pools have been calling people for generations! -KATE BARKER

SLEEPING BEAUTY
Did you know bears don't actually hibernate for the winter months? Thanks to many studies, including tracking Boo the Grizzly at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort (p 67), we now know bears don’t reach true hibernation. Instead, they enter torpor. A bear in torpor still has a slowed heart rate and metabolism. They still experience a drop in body temperature and can survive the winter months without food. A bear can wake from torpor, however, if they need to defend their den or deal with needy cubs. Follow Boo on Instagram to see when he wakes up this spring! -KB
