The show does indeed go on post-Hurricane Harvey BY HOLLY BERETTO
There’s a resiliency sewn tightly into the fabric of Houston’s history. From its beginnings as a sleepy backwater town on Buffalo Bayou’s brown banks, the city has grown and transformed itself across the last century into a global powerhouse of energy and innovative thought. But while Houston is known as a center for big business, it’s also a thriving cultural hub. Nowhere is that more clear than in its theater scene. From downtown’s Theater District, to the Energy Corridor on the city’s west side and all points in-between, companies large and small mount productions that are crowd pleasers for local and national audiences alike. If Houston’s unofficial mantra is that anyone who has an 42

idea can come here, work hard and achieve it, that sentiment is writ large on stages all over the city, where artistic dreamers become doers.
THEATERS THRIVE ONCE AGAIN When Hurricane Harvey slammed into Houston in August 2017, floodwaters careened through parts of the city, leaving destruction in its wake. Hit particularly hard was the downtown Theater District, where Harvey’s havoc ruined the venerable Alley Theatre’s prop and costume shop, ousting the organization for the first part of its 2017-2018 season. The Alley decamped to the University of Houston campus in September, but by November was

“Houston really showed its character after Harvey,” Leech said. “The city harnessed its energy and fortitude. Everyone here, if you had something and someone else didn’t, you gave it. When it became clear just how vast the damage to the Wortham was, the [HGO] board asked if we’d considered putting the season on hold.” For Leech and everyone in this company, that wasn’t an option. “We were put on this earth to do performances,” Leech said. “Yes, it would be hard, but you just roll up your sleeves and do it. The arts scene is a huge part of what this city is, and the arts can provide healing.”
MOVING FORWARD Leech isn’t the only artist who understands the power of the arts to heal. A.D. Players, one of Houston’s oldest theater companies and one of the only theater organizations in the country dedicated to producing plays with Christian, faith-based content, opened its 2017-2018 season with “Harvey,” the 1945 Mary Chase comedy. Chosen before the storm hit, it became apparent once Hurricane Harvey unleased its wrath, that the company had to give back to the city. Jake Speck, A.D. Players’ managing director, launched a “Harvey for Harvey” effort, providing free tickets to flood victims and first responders, and offering

back in its home downtown. But Harvey caused so much damage to the Wortham Theater Center that both the Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet—two nationally renowned companies—would be forced to produce their 2017-2018 seasons in other venues. “We’re coming back,” said Perryn Leech, managing director of Houston Grand Opera and board chair for Theater District Houston. “It’s just taken the city a little while to get its rhythm back.” The damage to Wortham Center was extensive. Flooding destroyed the costume and wig shops and ruined staging machinery. The basement held nearly 13 feet of water. It was, by any measure, a disaster. “In some ways it really gives you clarity,” Leech emphasized. “Despite all this destruction, there wasn’t ever a ‘woe-is-me’ attitude. It was very much, ‘let’s figure out how we’re going to do this.’” Leech, like artists across the ages, harnessed an ingrained “the-show-must-go-on” strength. A temporary home for the opera was set up in the George R. Brown Convention Center and aptly named Resilience Theatre. The Ballet would perform its annual “Nutcracker” performances at both the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts and at the Smart Financial Center in Sugar Land. Both companies return to the Wortham Center for the 2018-19 season.

parents an afternoon out at the theater by providing activities for kids while the adults watched the show. But then, A.D. Players knows a thing or two about resilience. Across its more than 50 years, the company has weathered Houston’s oil booms and busts, and endured a long campaign to finally raise enough capital to build the gleaming new building on Westheimer Road in the Galleria area that houses the Jeannette and L.M. George Theater, named for the company’s founder and her husband. If there’s anyone in Houston who knows about hewing to her mission and being resilient amid challenges, it’s got to be Jennifer Decker, the artistic director for Mildred’s Umbrella Theatre Company. Decker founded the company nearly 20 years ago and her mission has always been to produce plays by women that showcase women’s experiences. “A few years ago, we came across a survey in an American Theatre article that found that less than 30 percent of the plays produced in the United States were written by women, yet more than half of theatre-goers were female,” said Decker. “We found that the plays by women that we were reading were just as interesting than the plays by men, so we decided that our mission would be to promote gender
parity in the Houston theater scene by producing the powerful plays by women we felt were deserving of an audience.” Audience experience is important, but Kim Tobin-Lehl, who, with her husband Philip, co-founded and serves as coartistic director for 4th Wall Theatre Company, thinks the performer’s experience matters, too. 4th Wall has always wanted to pay artists a living wage. Last year, however, the company made a decision to shut down. The reason was simple: in order to continue its growth trajectory, it needed to invest more money in administration, and both TobinLehl and Lehl were unwilling to take money away from paying artists to invest in it. Lacking a full-time fundraiser, they decided to close rather than divert from their mission of paying artists a fair wage. But then, one of those incredible Houston stories happened: a benefactor stepped forward and refused to let a quality arts organization fold. “When Ken Bohan of The Liberty Group stepped in and made a commitment to us financially, we knew we were here to stay,” said Tobin-Lehl. 4th Wall’s 2018-2019 season will continue to offer the contemporary voices and character-driven pieces for which the organization has been known. GHOSTS IN GALVESTON ABOUND Here’s where to seek out the historic city’s resident spirits TEXT BY RITA COOK

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ISAAC ARJONILLA
When you think of the Texas Coast, Galveston is one of the first places that comes to mind. It’s an old city with a history that is dotted with success and stories of ruin. There is a list of some of the most elaborate homes built in the country during the 1800s and then there is also a fair share of disease, war, fire and even the likes of Jean Laffite—whose randy band of pirates are said to be among Galveston’s first European settlers. With so much history there are bound to be some resident ghosts in Galveston. And while the Broadway Cemetery might be a good place to begin a search for ghosts, it seems some of the older homes and hotels on the island have a good selection of ghost stories too. A barrier island just 45 miles south Houston, Galveston has six historic districts, an impressive collection of 19thcentury buildings and more than 60 locations named on the National Register of Historic Places. The city still holds the record for having experienced the deadliest hurricane in history back in 1900 when thousands of people were wiped out during the storm. Are some of those who perished still roaming the streets of the city or the halls of the hotels and homes? It seems likely since locations like the Hotel Galvez, Ashton Villa, Menard House and Bishop’s Palace all have stories that abound.
HOTEL GALVEZ This well-known Galveston landmark sits on the beachfront on Seawall and is often coined “Queen of the Gulf.” It is also the city’s only historic beachfront hotel. Its name comes from the man who surveyed the area in 1786 named Bernardo de Galvez. The property was opened in 1911 and today guests have the chance to not only scan the Hall of History on the lower level of the hotel, but also learn about the resident ghosts during a self-led ghost tour or by taking part in a ghost tour dinner that is offered on the second Wednesday and Thursday of each month. The most popular resident ghost is said to be the fiancée of a local seaman named Audra. She was in room 501 when she heard his ship had sunk and she took her own life in despair. It is said she haunts the halls of the hotels in addition to room 501 and she is especially active during the hotel’s ghost tours. “This year we turn 107,” said Melissa Hall, a concierge and ghost tour guide at Hotel Galvez. “You can’t be that old without a few skeletons or ghosts in your closet.” Hall has been doing the ghost tours for the past three years and says she has been surprised many times during her tours by guests actually capturing images of the hotels spirits. She adds about the notorious room 501 that while Audra is the most popular ghost in that room, ghost hunters have also WHERE GUEST B OOK

captured voices of males in there too and guests have reported a sweet tobacco smell as well as a sweet floral smell associated with Audra. There have even been two male images captured in room 501, the most recent photo taken during a ghost tour last year that looks to be the image of a soldier. “Most of our spirits here in the hotel we think actually came from the 1900 storm … those numbers range anywhere from 6,000 to 8,000,” Hall said, referring to the natural disaster that claimed so many lives at the turn of the twentieth century. “Next to Ellis Island, we were one of the largest immigration ports in the U.S.—I’ve seen some numbers as high as 10,000 to 12,000.” It’s no wonder then, that Galveston is one of the most haunted places in America, Hall added. In addition to Audra and the men haunting room 501 there are many other ghost reports including that of quite a few children. In fact, guests have reported hearing children laughing, running, jumping rope and playing games. Hall also said she has had a personal experience with one ghost named Abigail who she saw in the spa area, as well as the lower level in the Hall of History playing with a red ball and wearing a white dress. One couple who saw Abigail said they saw her clearly sitting on one of the hotel’s chaise lounges and they told her she should go find her parents, but then the little girl vanished. There is also a gentleman who has shown himself in the restroom by the spa and that same spirit has been photographed too and has been named the “Photobombing Pirate.”
ASHTON VILLA A three-story palace on Broadway Avenue J that took four years to build in the 1860s, Ashton Villa charms visitors these days with a variety of antiques, family heirlooms and original art. It was built by James Moreau Brown, a wealthy Texas businessman—when he died he left the home to his daughter Bettie Brown, now one of the resident ghosts. She has been seen on many occasions in the home, often standing in the Gold Room or at the top of the staircase. A second ghost—Mathilda Brown—is said to play the piano in the home for guests. A chest of drawers in what was once Bettie’s day room, locks and unlocks sporadically even though there is no key. 48
W H E R E G U E ST B O O K
Ceiling fans in the house go off and on without human intervention and a bed in the day room will not stay made. Other ghosts said to haunt Ashton Villa are soldiers marching in the house and on the grounds of the property. This is likely from the time when the house doubled as a hospital for confederate soldiers during the Civil War.
BISHOP’S PALACE With over three stories and a cost of about $250,000 to build at the time it was constructed in the 1800s, attorney and politician Colonel Walter Gresham and his wife Josephine referred to their home on Broadway Avenue J as “Gresham Castle.” The outside of the house has carvings as diverse as people, plants, animals and mythical creatures, and inside there are stained glass windows, large fireplaces, wood floors and an elaborate wooden staircase. It seems Gresham liked his home so much he did not want to leave and is still quite protective of it. It is rumored he is often seen outside the home making sure it is secured properly and paranormal activity is especially active during storms. Another spirit who seems to haunt Bishop’s Palace is Gresham’s wife. She is associated with a box containing postcards from her travels that gets moved throughout the home regularly.
MENARD HOUSE Menard House on 33rd Street is Galveston’s oldest residence, built in 1838 by Michael B. Menard, a Galveston founder and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. The home is notoriously haunted, and some say it is the most haunted place in the city. John Sydney Thrasher lived in Menard House in the latter part of the 1800s and he often held seances conjuring up his own spirits during the time he was living there. Most of the ghosts said to haunt this old mansion these days seem to be from the 1900 hurricane, including many children who are said to play in the garden. There are also stories of a woman who can be seen and heard crying at the bottom of the grand staircase. For more ghostly Galveston information, the best resource is the Galveston Historical Foundation today managing many of the city’s historical sites and old mansions.

ALL ABOUT TOWN
This jaunt to the Gulf Coast offers scenery, shopping and everything in between. Architecture- and history-lovers, shoppers, bird-watchers, sunbathers and those who appreciate fine dining all fall under this small island’s magical spell. A vacation destination for family trips or romantic getaways, Galveston is also home to one of Texas’ largest Mardi Gras celebrations and unique festivals like Dickens on the Strand, when the Historic District travels back in time to Victorian London by creating a 19th-century-England environment.
THE STRAND Known as “The Strand,” this quaint “downtown” area of the island is populated with historic architecture, one-of-akind gift shops, local boutiques, along Postoffice Street and more. The Texas Seaport Museum is home to the 1877 Scottish-built sailing ship Elissa, and the Lone Star Flight Museum, where you can take a ride in a historic World War II airplane. Take a tour of Galveston’s historic homes and buildings, many of which were restored after 2008’s Hurricane Ike by the Galveston His54

torical Foundation. Then indulge at the cafés and seafood restaurants like Fisherman’s Wharf, The Black Pearl Oyster Bar or Rudy & Paco. West of the Strand is where you’ll find family destinations like Moody Gardens and Schlitterbahn Galveston, where kids can stay entertained at a variety of attractions, and golf enthusiasts can enjoy the greens year-round.
THE SEAWALL For a true beach vacation, take your pick of seaside resorts and luxury accommodations along the Seawall. From the San Luis Resort to Hotel Galvez, each resort provides a unique vibe all its own, from quiet and serene to hip and action-packed. After a day spent fishing, kayaking or lounging beneath an umbrella, dine at local gems like The Gumbo Diner (where the beignets are not to be missed) or Miller’s Seawall Grill. A trip to this side of the island isn’t complete without time spent along the boardwalk at Pleasure Pier. Once a 1940s hot spot for entertainment, the pier features vintage-inspired shops, retro roller coasters, carnival games and memorable experiences for the child in all of us.

The award-winning sushi and contemporary Asian restaurant was a welcomed addition to the thriving Montrose neighborhood, and remains a local destination for those looking to enjoy an unforgettable dining experience. With newly appointed Chef de Cuisine (and Houston native) Lance Gillum executing the restaurant’s tradition of serving innovative dishes with flavors that surprise and delight the palette, Uchi continues to perpetuate a loyal following of both discerning local patrons and gastronomically-inclined visitors alike.
