One of the most quintessentially American of traditions is the art of barbecue. Within that, there are clear dividing lines and even different regions of “The Lone Star State� have stamped their own seal on the culture. Houston is nestled firmly in the Southeast Texas style that includes beef, sausage and even more regionallyspecific offerings, all complemented with minimal sauce or none at all. Texas barbecue is nothing less than an institution, and only the most consistent and delicious of the bunch can stand the test of time. GOING FOR BOLD The sprawling, scenic and thrill-filled Grand Texas park makes a big splash

Lying somewhere between a cliche and a badge of honor is the phrase “Everything is bigger in Texas.” It’s ubiquitous in the state. Another saying Texans take to heart is “It ain’t bragging if it’s true.” On Memorial Day of 2019, the biggest entertainment attraction opened up and proved both statements to be correct. Located just over 30 miles northeast of Houston in the town of New Caney is the newly opened Grand Texas Sports and Entertainment District. Spanning a sprawling 630-plus scenic acres, the complex features five separate entertainment attractions and promises to be the next great tourist spot in the region. The massive venue was not only created to fill the void left when Six Flags AstroWorld closed its doors for good in 2005, but also as an economic generator for the area and a destination for Texans from all over the state. “Grand Texas is something that we felt was really missing in this community,” says Terre Albert, the chief operating officer of Grand Texas. “In this part of Texas, there isn’t any type of attraction like any of the ones that we have brought. I think in the very near future, it will be the pre-eminent destination in this part of the state.” The complex includes Gator Bayou Adventure Park, the Speedsportz Race Park and Big Rivers Water Park. In addition to the main parks, eventually shopping and
dining options as well as RV and hotel facilities will be a further draw for patrons. “I think what sets Grand Texas apart as an entertainment destination is that we have multiple attractions,” says Albert. “We have the F-1 go-kart track. We have Big Rivers Water Park, which has multiple wave pools, a lazy river, multiperson slides, individual back slides. Then we have Gator Bayou and Wild Isle, which is the largest inflatable obstacle course in North America. There’s no other park like us in the country.” Aside from its myriad attractions, which also include a petting zoo, a massive dry obstacle course and zip lines, what differentiates Grand Texas from other similar venues is the setting. The Piney Woods of East Texas have been incorporated not just into the background of the park but into the very fabric of its makeup and design. “Other parks weren’t built like ours, where it’s built out in nature the way we are. They don’t have a setting like we do,” says Albert. “Those parks are built in a concrete jungle and we’re built in the woods of East Texas.” The audacity of what is being done with Grand Texas is quintessentially Texan. To carve out a vast swath of undeveloped wilderness and create something big, bold and bright—what says “Texas” better than that? WHERE GUEST B OOK

enormous maze, a catch and release fishing pond, and an area for gem mining. For thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies, there is the zipline course and an aerial ropes course, rock climbing walls, including—yes, you guessed it—one of the largest such walls in Texas, and an alligator attraction that lets visitors get an up-close and personal view of the fascinating animals native to the area. The combination of water and adventure park makes for a unique draw. Few venues outside of the major theme parks have ever attempted to combine the two and successfully pull off the “something for everyone” model. The rides and attractions at Big Rivers and Gator Bayou promise to be some of the biggest, most exciting in all of Texas. That’s in line with the vision of the owners of the park, who wanted to create a venue truly deserving of the name “Grand Texas.” “We really wanted to be something this part of the region could be proud of,” says Albert. “I think the park will be something that not only the community here in Montgomery County can be proud of, but I also think this part of the state will look at it as something special. I hope ultimately that Grand Texas is something like that for everyone in the state.” Grand Texas hopes to be a destination that truly has something for everyone. Once it gets fully established, the hope of everyone involved is that this will be one of the premier tourist destinations in the state. Gauging from the reception it has garnered so far from the community and from the first weekend’s attendance, Grand Texas is well on its way to achieving those goals. “Our opening weekend, we had around 6,000 people come into the park,” says Albert. “Everyone we have dealt with, from the chamber of commerce to the local government officials to the residents to the business community… everyone has had nothing but positive things to say about what we’re doing. I think they all realize how this will help revitalize the area and give people something they’ve been missing.”

“You’re not going to find anything like Grand Texas anywhere else in the state,” says Albert. “Nowhere else has all of the attractions that we have, set where we are. If you’re a kid home from college, you can go do the zip lines at Gator Bayou. If you’re a family with younger kids, you can do the lazy river or the petting zoo. Then there is Wild Isle, where people can run the obstacle course and bounce people off into the water. We’re going to be fun for everyone.” With the grand opening taking place just in time to beat the heat of those long East Texas summer months, Grand Texas, with its Big Rivers Water Park, looks to be both a literal and figurative oasis for the area. The lazy river—fittingly titled the Rio GRAND River—is the largest and longest in the area. On opening weekend, it proved to be one of the main draws as hundreds of visitors enjoyed the relaxing, refreshing waters and the idyllic scenery surrounding them. “We really couldn’t have picked a better setting to open up in,” says Albert. “The Piney Woods of East Texas have always been a draw by themselves for people. When you add in the attractions we’ve created, I think you’re going to see this part of the state become even more popular than it already is.” It has not been an easy ride for the organizers of Grand Texas. There have been multiple hitches since the project was first announced in 2013. It took two years to get the site cleared out so construction could begin, and was a long four years getting to the grand opening. For the organizers—and the slew of visitors—it has been well worth the wait. “I can’t tell you how excited we all are to get to this point,” explains Albert. “Everyone involved has worked really hard for a really long time to get here. To see all the smiles on all the kids’ faces out there for opening weekend, you know it was worth it. The anticipation has been well worth it.” The parks at Grand Texas offer plenty of kid- and familyfriendly attractions, including the Gator Splash, a massive, interactive play structure with more than 300 components— the largest of its kind in the state. There is also an equally

Giant leaps in space exploration are immortalized at the NASA Johnson Space Center— a place that’s as much about saluting the past as it is about inspiring future generations. BY SCOTT ROUCH
Arguably the two most iconic statements in the history of spaceflight are “Houston, Tranquility Base here; the Eagle has landed,” and “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Both were uttered by Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong on July 20, 1969, announcing the landing and man’s first steps on the moon. Already one of the area’s top attractions, displaying more than 400 space artifacts that represent some of the most historic and greatest accomplishments known to man, all eyes turned to Space Center Houston, the official visitor center of NASA Johnson Space Center, from July 16-24, as it marked the 50th anniversary of one of the most remarkable feats of humankind. 32

The success of Apollo 11 fulfilled President John F. Kennedy’s goal of landing a man on the moon before the decade was out, a goal he proclaimed to Congress on May 25, 1961. The nine-day affair celebrating the accomplishments of Apollo 11, its crew and the people who contributed to the mission is an event that will not be soon forgotten. Between a scheduled drop-in by the Golden Knights, the Army’s parachute team, at the opening ceremony, to the 1960s-themed Apollo 11 Mission Splashdown Party on July 24, the space program’s history literally came to life. Special events included lunches with astronaut families, panel discussions and a dinner with NASA flight director Gene Kranz.

The consoles were taken from the center to the Kansas Cosmosphere for restoration and then returned. The historic nature of the setting doesn’t apply to just the physical look, it gives a real-time effect of being in the Mission Control Center on July 20, 1969. Video images play on screens, chatter is heard between astronauts and flight controllers, and clocks in the room are synchronized to what’s on the screens and consoles. The viewing room will have 1960s-era TVs airing vintage CBS footage, while other areas are presented with real artifacts in them. “We want you to feel like you stepped back in the Apollo era,” says Harris. While the restoration process was a difficult one, it wasn’t the first daunting task for Space Center Houston, which went to great lengths in the development of Independence Plaza presented by Boeing. The impressive 240-ton facility includes an original NASA 905 shuttle carrier aircraft (SCA) with 80-ton shuttle replica Independence mounted to it. The shuttle replica had to be moved from Florida to Houston, while it took 40 days for the Boeing 747 (SCA) to be disassembled at Houston’s Ellington Field and transported to its current location. One of the special touches that opened just in time for the celebration was the restoration of the Apollo Mission Control Center. Included were the Missions Operations Control Room (MOCR), Visitor Viewing Room, Simulation Control Room and the Summary Display Projection Room (“bat cave”). “We want to keep the legacy of the Apollo era alive and preserve the Apollo Mission Control Center,” says William T. Harris, Space Center Houston president and CEO. “Thanks to the combined efforts of so many people, future generations can experience this iconic room exactly as it was when Neil Armstrong made his historic first steps on the Moon.” Located in the Christopher C. Kraft Mission Control Center, the renovated Mission Control Center is part of the NASA Tram Tour, included in a general admission ticket. Getting the national landmark, which made the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1985, back to exactly as it looked and operated during nine Gemini missions, 21 space shuttle missions and the Apollo era—specifically during the Apollo 11 landing—has to rank among one of the tougher missions to date. Designers looked through archival footage, talked with flight controllers about their consoles and hit the smallest detail, down to wallpaper and the type of carpet on the floor.

cramped living conditions. Then it’s on to NASA SCA 905 and go hands-on with interactive displays. Independence Plaza is just one of seven permanent exhibits, including the NASA Tram Tour, and limited-run exhibits that honor the ongoing missions, future plans and history of the space program. That history began with the establishment of the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston in 1961—opening in 1963 with Gemini IV as the first controlled flight—then renamed the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in 1973. Today it is home to the astronaut corps; International Space Station Missions; and the Orion Program, a new spacecraft with goals of landing humans on Mars in the 2030s. The feats of the space program are on display, delving heavily into the Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz and Shuttle programs. The Starship Gallery immortalizes spacecraft and artifacts. Kranz, the flight director for the Gemini and Apollo programs, can be seen in his Apollo 17 vest, just one of the colorful vests he began wearing with the launch of Gemini 4. The Starship Gallery also shows the important contributions from astronaut Gordon Cooper with his Mercury 9 “Faith 7” capsule that orbited for more than 34 minutes in 1963. The capsule’s rounded bottom defended against heat on re-entry and that design continued with the Gemini, Apollo and current
Orion programs. His Gemini V spacecraft, also occupied by Charles “Pete” Conrad, which set a record for longest time in space by humans (seven days), is on loan from the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The Astronaut Gallery displays spacesuits worn throughout the years, giving a close look at women astronauts. Displays include the T-38 flight training suit worn by Judith Resnik, who was in the first astronaut training class featuring women in 1978; inflight coveralls worn by Sally Ride, the first woman in space on Challenger (1983); and an Extravehicular Mobility Unit like the one worn by Kathryn Sullivan, the first woman to space walk. Among Sullivan’s three shuttle missions, she helped deploy the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990. Ever wonder what it’s like to live off-planet? The International Space Station Gallery takes away the guesswork. Learn about the mission involving astronaut Scott Kelly in which he and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko spent 340 consecutive days on the station, or be a participant in “Living in Space,” a live program detailing daily operations on the center. As America continues to be leaders in the exploration of space, NASA Johnson Space Center and Space Center Houston will be right there in the forefront.

One of the more innovative ways that Houstonians move about the city is by utilizing the historic Downtown Tunnel System. With more than 6.5 miles worth of underground passageways and above-ground skywalks, the Tunnels connect 95 city blocks and link office towers with hotels, banks with government offices, restaurants with retail stores and businesses with the Houston Theater District. “Considered one of Houston’s best-kept secrets, most of Downtown’s 160,000-person workforce use it daily,” says Angie Bertinot, director of marketing and communications with Houston’s Downtown District. “The system is particularly handy when it’s raining or during Houston’s hot summer months.”

HISTORY OF THE TUNNELS In the early 1930s, the 31st governor of Texas, Ross Sterling, built a pedestrian tunnel under present-day Fannin Street that connected two buildings he owned. The now sprawling tunnel system spread soon after. The next section of the Houston underground was begun by theater owner Will Horowitz, who constructed an underground walkway to connect the lobby of his Texan Theatre, the Uptown Tavern, the Texas Fountain Room and the Uptown Lounge, which were all across the street from one another. Horowitz’s dream of a mini-city below the streets of Houston died with him when he passed in 1941. His theaters closed one by one and were all razed by 1953 and the tunnel filled by 1968. The tunnels aggressively expanded during the 1970s and over the next 40 years have undergone periods of growth and closures. “Starting in the ’70s, it (the tunnels) became a necessary amenity that is now part of every new office development project. Portions of the tunnel contain gift shops, newsstands, banks, technology centers, flower shops, copy centers, dry cleaners and food courts similar to a major shopping mall.”
EXPLORING HOUSTON’S UNDERGROUND The Tunnel and Skywalk system is open to the public on weekdays during the city’s working hours, 6 am to 6:30 pm with numerous access points. From street level, take the tun-
nels at Wells Fargo Plaza and the McKinney garage. Aesthetically speaking, the Tunnels have more in common with an airport terminal than with a shopping mall, but what they lack in frills they make up for in convenience. Visitors have access to such prominent Downtown Houston locations as the AMC Houston 8, Revention Music Center, the Shops at Houston Center and the performance halls of the Theater District. They also connect high-profile buildings and sites such as the George R. Brown Convention Center, the Toyota Center and Houston Public Library. One of the intriguing sections of the tunnels is below the Museum of Fine Arts, where an exhibit, “The Light Inside,” connects two of the museum’s buildings. Visitors transiting are greeted with changing lights and the feeling of floating. When it comes to food, there are plenty of reliable chains to choose from like Salata and Fuddrucker’s, or go with local favorites including the carnivore’s paradise Becks Prime. Specializing in burgers, hot dogs and steaks, Becks Prime has been recognized as having not only one of the best burgers in the state, but also one of the best in the nation by numerous media outlets. Another local Houston favorite is the Post Oak Grill. Billed as serving “new American cuisine,” the restaurant offers up a sampling of diverse flavors that embody the city of Houston. Gulf Coast crab cakes, chicken enchiladas, and smothered steak are just some of the options to choose from. For even more of a taste of the diversity of Houston, try 5411 Empanadas, serving up the South American-style version of these tasty Latin hand pies. The Tunnels truly are a city unto themselves and a great slice of all that Houston has to offer.

Westheimer Road, this area is the quintessential spot for the sartorial set. Fashion-forward visitors would be wise to dedicate much of their time to exploring not just the Galleria’s massive collection of retailers, but also luxury shopping centers like Highland Village, Uptown Park and most recently, the River Oaks District. Here, patrons can indulge in high-end retail therapy at designer boutiques such as Chopard, Etro, Intermix and Jo Malone. Enjoy 38

Houston’s most prestigious, historical neighborhoods. Advantageously located between Uptown and Downtown, the neighborhood boasts lush green spaces peppered with oak trees, affluent subdivisions and a wealth of upscale shops and restaurants. THE WOODLANDS An ever-evolving enclave north of Houston, this affluent suburb offers local watering holes for unwinding; upscale restaurants such as Cureight, Jasper’s and Grotto Ristorante; as well a bevy of boutiques and shopping centers.
