First opened as the Union Gospel Tabernacle in 1892, Ryman Auditorium, aka “The Mother Church of Country Music,” is best known for being the home of the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 to 1974. Later, it sat mostly vacant and fell into disrepair until 1992, but these days, the historic auditorium is regarded as one of the best performance venues in the nation for its stellar acoustics. Belle Meade Plantation got its start as a thoroughbred breeding farm; in its heyday it was one of the largest and wealthiest private estates in Nashville, covering 5,400 acres and producing some of the finest racehorses in the South. While the Harding family lost the plantation in 1902, its legacy continues and operates as a museum. inyl is alive and well in Nashville. Not only does Music City press more than half of North America’s records, there is also an abundance of stores where you can browse stacks upon stacks of the nostalgic media. Step inside one of these one-of-a-kind shops and you’ll see for yourself: records are about more than buying music. From hip to historic to hip again, records are Nashville’s pride and joy. Decked out in black and yellow hues, the Nashville location of Jack White’s THIRD MAN RECORDS opened in 2009. Entering the shop is like peeking behind a curtain of the rockstar’s weird and wonderful mind. Beyond the novelties lounge, tour the independent label’s offices and distribution center, see the live venue with rare directto-acetate recording capabilities and even create your own 2-minute record in a 1947 Voice-o-Graph booth. Located on Broadway, ERNEST TUBB’S RECORD STORE has been in business for more than 66 years and specializes in the hard to find. Named for former Grand Ole Opry star and a pioneer of country music, the store often welcomes singers and songwriters—whether planned performances for the Midnite Jamboree or those just stopping in to say hello. In addition to hosting live performances in the backyard, East Nashville’s FOND OBJECT RECORDS is a self-described “psychedelic department store” that also sells vintage goods as well as occasionally hosts a petting zoo. Simply put, you never know what you’ll find. Nearby VINYL TAP is helmed by Todd Hedrick, a fourth-generation East Nashvillian who isn’t shy to share his love for wax and drafts with locals and visitors alike. Sip a cool drink while browsing stacks— there are even cup holders for your glass—or stay awhile to catch a live show on the stage. You’re on Nashville time now.

You’d be forgiven if you thought “Nashville” and “fashion” automatically included a certain amount of bling. While few of us can resist a little bit of shine, the new aesthetic of the city’s leading fashion houses is more nuanced and subtler than you may realize. “The Nashville design scene is not flashy,” explains local designer Ceri Hoover. “Everyone is focused on quality, detail and story. We want people to have a personal connection to what they buy, and not just to have something in their closets.” Take a look into the minds and collections of five of Music City’s most creative women, working in jewelry, handbags (and shoes), clothing and textiles. JUDITH BRIGHT Judith Bright had long wanted to make jewelry, even when she had other careers, including nursing and in the film and TV industry.
With her family, she lived for a year in Italy, learning the time-intensive art of silversmithing. Back in Nashville, it was time to try to turn her dream into her occupation, but she needed items that were easier and less expensive to make. From her basement, she started crafting pieces from non-precious metals, such as 14-karat gold fill. The wire-wrapped pieces were so popular (particularly when the economy slowed in 2008 and people wanted affordable luxuries) that Bright expanded several times, eventually to her own studio in 12South where customers can watch the team of artisans at work and pick out the stones they want in their pieces. Expansion led to a production studio in Berry Hill, although customers can still select, shop and watch in 12South. Bright trains the 16 women who make the jewelry, no experience required. “Anyone who is open and kind can work for us,” Bright says. WHERE GUEST B OOK

CERI HOOVER “I am not reinventing the handbag,” Hoover says modestly, although many in Nashville think she did just that since founding her premium leather accessories company in 2013. Influenced by her mother, who Hoover says was a minimalist before minimalism was cool and “never had a flashy logo on her bags,” Hoover and the brand that sports her name is known for simple, clean lines, such as the cutout handle of her Alys collection. “Leather handbag production ends up with a lot of waste, and it drove me crazy,” Hoover recalls. “My brand is about sustainability so I wanted to find ways to utilize that waste without making keychains. Tassels and keychains are not me.” But shoes are, so Hoover added those to her line (including apparel and accessories), made with leather scraps from the handbags to her line. Production of the products themselves now takes place in Los Angeles, and shoppers can see, touch (and smell, it’s leather) in the 12South showroom. 34

JAMIE + THE JONES Friends who met in design school (in suburban Franklin, Tennessee), Jamie Frazier and Hannah Jones are known for their clothing made from natural fibers, like raw silks, in easy flowing silhouettes. “Nashville used to be cowboys and fitted clothing,” Frazier remembers. “In school, a lot of what we were learning was costume-y.” The two women, both of whom grew up in Nashville, became noticed for doing the opposite after launching in 2009. Frazier and Jones have a bigger worldview when it comes to fashion trends. “Like food—where people now want to know where their food comes from, and who makes it—we think increasingly people want to know where clothing comes from, who makes it, and what the inspiration is for the fabrics,” Frazier says. Jamie + the Jones also bucks norms by creating looks that work for all women. “We have very different body types,” Jones says. “I am short and curvy. Jamie is tall and thin, so we make silhouettes that fit everyone. I feel lucky that we are so different.”

ELECTRA EGGLESTON Andra Eggleston is the daughter of famous artist William Eggleston (many call him the father of color photography), and develops her designs in collaboration with him, using his drawings on repeat in some of her collections. When she decided to start a textile business in 2015, she named it the name her dad wanted her to have when she was born: Electra Eggleston (Mom vetoed that). The Electra Eggleston fabrics are primarily for home décor, but also used in collections by dressmaker Agnès B. and in collaboration with local bow-tie and hat-maker Otis James. Electra Eggleston prints are only sold through the trade (meaning you have to work with an interior designer to buy them), but you can see them around town, including on furniture at Rare Bird, the rooftop bar at Noelle Hotel, and on pillows for sale at Germantown’s Wilder shop.
Eggleston hopes that licensing more prints to fashion designers is in her future, but it will always be a smaller part of her business. “I always wanted to stay focus on fabric by the yard so I can stay focused on the art. I am a textile designer, not a fashion designer, “she says. “The part of the process I enjoy the most is seeing how people would use the prints.” The diverse list of female designers worth getting to know doesn’t stop there. Two Son, the brainchild of two couples (each with two sons) have their own line of denim and T-shirts, while Black by Maria Silver creates clothing designed by (and for, in many cases) musicians. There’s Ashley Balding’s bright-colored clothing line, Ona Rex, that transports its wearers to a fantastical world, and Amanda Valentine in East Nashville, whose looks have turned heads on rock bands and on “Project Runway.” These creative powerhouses are charting new courses in the local fashion scene for more up-and-comers to follow in their footsteps, no boots necessary. If the walls in Nashville could, they would sing. Take AJ’s Good Time Bar, for instance. The three-story honkytonk with a rooftop bar located on Lower Broadway was voted the No. 1 honkytonk in Nashville by Billboard Magazine. From noon to night, the live music fills the air and the walls pay tribute to Alan Jackson’s career and life with photos, records and instruments. AJ’s Good Time Bar is just a block away from the Country Music Hall of Fame, where its founder and owner was inducted into last year. This exciting venue isn’t the building’s first, however. It is located in a section of the oldest building on Broadway, which was built in 1862 and used as a hospital in the Civil War. Music has played a big part of the history of AJ’s Goodtime Bar building, too. In 1941, decades before Alan Jackson’s smash hit paying homage to traditional country “Don’t Rock The Jukebox” was a chart-topping song, the building was home to a local jukebox company. A chance meeting outside the music store was the start of the South’s first independent record label and the South’s first vinyl record pressing plant. In 1946, standing outside what is now AJ’s Goodtime Bar, Jim Bulleit ran into a local musician who encouraged him to start a record label. 421 Broadway became the headquarters of Bullet Records, which signed a big band leader from the Hermitage Hotel whose nightly shows were popular among guests and locals. Bullet Records artist Francis Craig’s “Near You” became Music City’s first record to sell more than a million records and remain a No. 1 on the Billboard charts for 17 weeks. WHERE GUEST B OOK

Because of the actions of the students, Woolworth’s and all other lunch counters in Nashville became open to everyone. Morales proudly recreated this famous spot, with a lunch counter still part of the experience today. Morales also created Acme Feed & Seed in a historic 19th century building overlooking the Cumberland River, The Southern a popular restaurant featuring local and southern fair and Fin & Pearl a seafood restaurant in the Gulch. No tour of Nashville history is complete without a visit to Skull’s Rainbow Room, Printer’s Alley most historic and unique establishment, tucked in the basement of the 19th century Southern Turf Building. When the Turf open in 1895, it was a saloon, brothel and gambling hall during the wild days when the area of Printers Alley was called “The Gentleman’s Quarter.” The Rainbow Room opened in 1944 and became famous when Skull Shulman later moved it to Printers Alley, replaced the orchestra music with live music of the day and brought in burlesque dancers to entertain locals and visitors. Shortly after, The Turf was leased to The Tennessean newspaper. The walls of Skull’s were where the presses once hummed late at night printing thousands of papers covering the lives of leaders, politicians and events of Nashville. Today, Skull’s serves up handcrafted drinks, good food and live jazz music nightly as well as burlesque shows every weekend. If you make a visit to these Music City institutions, listen closely—the walls still hum with hidden history.

Record plants could not keep up with the huge demand for “Near You,” so Bullet Records started their own record making plant in Nashville—the first in the Southeast. In its brief history from 1946 to 1954, Bullet released the first record from Owen Bradley—also known as the “Father of Music Row”—with B.B. King in 1949. Today, Bullet Records’ plant is now United Record Pressing, and is the largest record pressing plant in North American producing over 60,000 records a day—more than half the number of vinyl records made in America. Craig wasn’t the only hit sensation connected to the Hermitage Hotel, either. Nashville’s oldest and grandest hotel has hosted inside its walls presidents, musicians, professional athletes and visitors from all over the world. The striking Beaux Arts style welcomes visitors to the famous lobby with a painted glass skylight, marble floors and columns. The hidden history doesn’t stop there. On the lower level of the hotel, just past the famed Capitol Grille and Oak Bar, is a door leading to one of the city’s most interesting room. With bright green and black glass tile walls and striking terrazzo floors, the restroom is one of Nashville’s finest Art Deco designs. In fact, women are invited to see the historic bathroom’s original mint green sinks and toilets. Legend has it that John F. Kennedy had his shoes shined in the restroom while a guest of the Hermitage Hotel. Musicians Alan Jackson and Jack White have both done photo shoots in these walls, and last year Kathie Lee and Hoda of the “Today” show visited the restroom for a live, nationwide television segment. Also making recent national headlines is Woolworth’s on 5th, talented restaurateur Tom Morales’ new place where great food is merged with history and Southern culture. Nashville was the second city in America where the non-violent lunch counter sit-ins challenged the oncesegregated eating establishments. The walls of city’s first Woolworth five and dime saw justice due to the actions of brave Nashville college students. On February 27, 1960 students peacefully sat at the lunch counter, were refused service and later beat by an angry mob. Police arrested the protestors, including a young John Lewis—his first arrest in protesting the segregation of the South. While being led out of the drug store, Lewis and the students sang “We

MAKING MAGIC With its new House of Cards venue, Bill Miller’s Icon Entertainment Group still has some tricks up its sleeve for Music City BY MARGARET LITTMAN

Just a few years ago Bill Miller and his Icon Entertainment Group weren’t a fixture on the Nashville tourism scene. Then, in 2013, Miller, a Johnny Cash mega-fan from way back, announced the opening of the Johnny Cash Museum. Some wondered how popular it might be, as close as it is to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Miller proved that there’s no limit to the public’s appreciation of the Man in Black. By December 2017, his museum had seen more than one million visitors come through its doors and added a café to feed sightseers. Miller and his wife Shannon, Icon co-founder, also proved they have a rare talent—the ability to anticipate new tourism trends while honoring, appreciating and preserving the past. In just 5 years, Icon Entertainment Group has built a collection of destinations that are the best of old and new. Icon’s newest project, which opened in April 2018, is perhaps its most unusual and offbeat. And that says something, given that this is a company that hung a full-size Cadillac from the wall of a honkytonk. House of Cards is a magic venue that is part performance space and part museum, hidden in the basement under both the Johnny Cash Museum and the Patsy Cline Museum, the homage to the “Crazy” singer that opened in 2017. “We were members of the Magic Castle when we lived in California, and we miss it,” Shannon Miller says of Los Angeles’ famous venue, a members-only club for people 21 and older and their guests. House of Cards isn’t a members-only attraction, however; locals and tourists
alike are welcome to come see the shows, slights of hand and eat dinner. But like the California inspiration, they must follow a dress code (sports jackets and cocktail attire required; ties are not) and shows are for adults only. House of Cards is a strictly no-photo space, so none of the surprises are leaked. (To that end, you’ll find no spoilers here, suffice to say, these aren’t kids’ birthday partystyle tricks.) On the walls are framed pieces of art, including some of the rarest playing cards in any collection: one dates from 1490. Artifacts of Harry Blackstone, Sr., a famed 20th-century magician, came from an auction; Miller says he outbid big names such as David Copperfield for the memorabilia, in part because there was a connection to suburban Nashville in their provenance. Blackstone Sr. once headlined at the Ryman and was a member of The Nashville Magic Club. That makes sense as most of Icon’s projects are intrinsically connected to Nashville’s history. Nudie’s Honky Tonk, which opened in 2016 on Broadway, honors Nudie Cohn, the man who dressed country stars in sequins. The live music venue, which boasts a bar embedded with nearly 10,000 silver dollars, has “Nudie Suits” framed and hung on the walls, as well as Cohn’s aforementioned Cadillac. Last year, Icon bought even more of the city’s storied past in hopes of preserving it, including Skull’s Rainbow Room dating back to 1948 and Merle Haggard Museum, which is also scheduled for a 2018 opening.
