Ryman Auditorium

First opened as the Union Gospel Tabernacle in 1892, Ryman Auditorium, aka “The Mother Church of Country Music, is best known for being the home of the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 to 1974. Later, it sat mostly vacant and fell into disrepair until 1992, but these days, the historic auditorium is regarded as one of the best performance venues in the nation for its stellar acoustics. A diverse concert schedule includes more than 200 shows per year with hot headliners like Marty Stuart, Darius Rucker, Vince Gill, Chelsea Handler and dozens of others. A visit is still a religious experience for many. Self-guided, guided backstage and group tours are also available. 116 Fifth Ave. N., 615.889.3060, www.ryman.com

NAVIGATE NASHVILLE LIKE A PRO By taste, by trolley, by sound, by night: these are just a few of the ways visitors delve into Music City’s rich past and vibrant present BY MADISON SULLIVAN

BY FOOT Picture a group trudging behind a guide, with cameras in hand. When participating in one of the classic or custom excursions offered by Nashville History on Tour, travelers will want to have their cameras ready, but they won’t drag their feet. Created by a local historian, Nashville History on Tour provides a fascinating look back in time through 30-plus upscale tours. Its Woman’s Suffrage Tour pulls back the curtain to reveal how the right to vote was won, and its Nashville Civil Rights and Sit in Tour illustrates the important part Nashville played in the Civil Rights Movement. These walking tours are private and by appointment only, ensuring an in-depth experience that’ll make the two hours fly by.

BY SEGWAY Your required helmet may impede the wind whipping through your hair as you weave past well-known locales, but there’s still something special about experiencing Nashville in the open air. That’s where iRide Nashville comes in, offering adventurous tourists the chance to reach places many vehicle-bound tour groups can’t access. Riders receive Segway training, then take off on one of three guided-tours. A standout, the Downtown Tour Experience is a two-hour, 5-mile tour that introduces riders to the Country WHERE GUEST B OOK

35

BY BOAT If cruising on a Segway isn’t your style, step off the streets and see the skyline in a whole new way. Local magazine Nashville Scene dubbed River Queen Voyages’ Skyline kayak tour “Best View of the City,” and those who ditch pounding the pavement for gazing out over a paddle will have to agree. The one-and-a-half-hour route covers 3 miles of the Cumberland River and can be completed with only your fourlegged friend onboard (as long as they’re wearing a life jacket), or with friends, led by a guide. Urban dwellers can easily tag along with their nature-loving travel companions, as no experience is necessary and the kayak, paddle, life jacket, kayaking and safety demonstrations and shuttle service are provided.

BY SOUND Sans song, nothing Nashville-related is complete. Which is why SongBird Tours, branding itself “part tour bus and part intimate music club,” puts a rotating lineup of well-known, Nashville-based songwriters front and center stage. 36

W H E R E G U E ST B O O K

Transport yourself to the back of a dimly lit, melody-filled bar by bringing your own alcoholic beverage to sip on as live music swells in the bus and seemingly floats out to meet the music-related sites passing in the windows. Riders may recognize the tunes on the two-hour tour, as many of the various songwriters’ works have been belted out by famous performers and topped the charts.

BY TASTE While indulging your senses, follow your taste buds through historic Germantown or the Gulch District on one of the Local Tastes of Nashville tours. Whichever you choose, you’ll enjoy dishes from five to six restaurants and specialty shops on a two-and-a-half-hour tour. During the Historic Germantown Food Tour, mouths will water as tour-goers meander through the Nashville Farmers’ Market and out into Nashville’s original neighborhood, dining on Southern barbecue and decadent homemade sweets. Starting at the stately Union Station Hotel, The Gulch & Union Station tour is equally appealing, featuring everything from pimiento cheese to biscuit donuts served with blueberry compote.

Whether you follow your guide downriver, into a local hangout or back in time, you’re sure to head home having discovered yet another reason to follow your heart back to Nashville.

Not only does the tour show the city in a different light, but it’s also a chance to spend more time in downtown bars, pubs and taverns and, of course, hear harrowing stories of hauntings. Those who need liquid courage (to participate in haunted trivia) can imbibe in spirits at each stop on this twoand-a-half-hour tour.

BY GOLF CART

Above: JoyRide’s one-and-a-half hour Mural and Instagram Tour takes cameraladen visitors to see (and snap photos of) some of Nashville’s vibrant street art.

Grab your friends and climb aboard one of JoyRide’s golf carts for a two-hour Bar Golf Crawl. The game spans five local bars, where how much you drink depends on how well you putt—it can’t hurt to brush up on your stroke before you book. JoyRide has something for every traveler’s taste. In addition to its Bar Golf Crawl, it offers a sightseeing tour, featuring more than 35 locations; a Mural and Instagram Tour sure to spice up your profile; and a Jacked Up Monster Truck Cowboy tour with red, white and blue splashed across its cab.

BY NIGHT Just because daylight dwindles into darkness doesn’t mean the Nashville tour experience has to end. Enthusiasts of the paranormal jump at the opportunity to tag along on a Haunted Tavern Tour, led by Nashville Ghost Tours.

BY TROLLEY Travelers with a bucket list have every incentive to hop on, and off, and on again while riding the open-air Old Town Trolley, which boasts 15 stops and more than 100 points of interest. Those who want to ride through without budging from their seat can experience a nearly two-hour, live narrated tour. Savvy travelers can learn all they need to know, then ride the loop again stopping at sites they want to explore in more detail. Be sure to get off at the George Jones Museum and Madame Tussauds Museum, as an Old Town Trolley ticket purchase includes free admission to these attractions. Whether you follow your guide downriver, into a local hangout or back in time, you’re sure to head home having discovered yet another reason to follow your heart back to Nashville. WHERE GUEST B OOK

Go beyond barbecue and hot chicken for a truly multicultural approach BY STEPHANIE STEWART-HOWARD

Nashville has always possessed spectacular ethnic eats— and now they’re more prevalent than ever. Multiculturalism thrives, in part thanks to the work of prominent folks like Maneet Chauhan and Vivek Deora, whose Morph Hospitality Group is behind Indian fusion locale Chauhan Ale & Masala House downtown (123 12th Ave. N.). Chauhan’s Southern-Indian fusion followed up with Chaatable Indian Street Food (345 40th Ave. N.), the elegant Mockingbird—whose menu touches a little bit of every element of the globe from Italy to China to Mexico (121A 12th Ave. N.)—and Tansuo, a flight through Chinese street food (121B 12th Ave. N.). 38

W H E R E G U E ST B O O K

Nashville is also home to Indian fusion master Vivek Surti, whose Tailor Nashville (1300B 3rd Ave. N.) blends the best of Surti’s native Indian cuisine with elements of the American South. It keeps to supper-club simplicity, offering a prix fixe menu full of intrigue and flavor (try the trout with saffron, fennel, toasted rice and spinach), but not an overwhelming number of dishes to select from. Also keep an eye out for excellent, wholly vegetarian Woodlands (3415 West End Ave.), which offers innovative South and North Indian dishes. Paradise Biryani Pointe (1945 Mallory Lane, Franklin) serves a wide range of meat and seafood dishes along with vegetarian fare.

Nolensville Pike provides a conglomeration of some of the very best of the best ethnic foods in the city, created by talented chefs who come from the traditions they cook. Try Istanbul (2631 Nolensville Pike) for a perfect kebab, and Dunya Kebab (2521 Nolensville Pike) for Kurdish-style meals of kebabs, gyros and delicious, homemade baklava. For authentic Mexican cuisine, try well-established and family-owned La Hacienda (2615 Nolensville Pike), with a menu that includes items including molcajete with choice of meats, cactus, banana peppers, cheese, onions and salsa—delicioso! Craving street tacos? Swing by Tacos y Mariscos El Amigo (3901 Nolensville Pike), or El Tapatío (3611 Nolensville Pike) for tacos that offer traditional selections and a few for the adventurous—lengua (tongue) or buche (pork stomach), for example. In and around Nolensville, through Antioch and Smyrna, you’ll find the best Ethiopian options. Gojo Ethiopian Café (415 Thompson Lane) has a terrific lunch buffet, including some excellent vegetarian and vegan options.

Many Asian delights can be found in Nashville. Left: Kimchi fried rice at Tansuo; right: avocado smoothies at Miss Saigon Below: The Punchin’ Bag at The Mockingbird.

CLOCKWISE FROM FAR LEFT: ©DANIEL RIVERA, COURTESY MISS SAIGON, ©EMILY DORIO

But it’s not just India with an elevated profile in the area—regardless of demographics, exceptional restaurants abound across Nashville and outlying communities. Multicultural dining here kept a low profile for some time. Today, there is virtually no part of the city that doesn’t offer something special, depending on your tastes. Nashville Farmers’ Market–The Market House (900 Rosa L. Parks Blvd.) has some of the best fast-casual food in the city from around the world. Make a visit to Jamaica Way for jerk chicken, ox tails, curried goat, plenty of fish, all served up with Johnny cake. Guy Fieri made Athens Family Restaurant (2526 Franklin Pike) a landmark, and the gyros are as good as they looked on the Food Network. For something a bit more native, visit Greko Street Food in East Nashville (704 Main St.), where grilled octopus is a thing—a totally delicious thing. The kotosoupa (chicken soup) is good for anything that ails you. To keep on your radar: Persian cuisine at House of Kebab (216 Thompson Lane) and luscious Lebanese bistro food at upscale Epice (2902 12th Ave. S.).

Then there’s the East Asian contingency. Upscale Vui’s Kitchen has garnered well-deserved attention for outstanding pho and great bahn mi. Vui’s offers two locations in Berry Hill (2832 Bransford Ave.) and Germantown (1120 4th Ave. N., #101). Polished Miss Saigon (5849 Charlotte Pike) offers lunch for $10, including delicious bahn mi with eggrolls and tea. If you possess the ability to eat your body’s weight in sushi, try Samurai Sushi (2209 Elliston Place) not far from Vanderbilt—this is the genuine article, as good as it gets. Nama Sushi (2300 Elliston Place) nearby has an excellent menu and a super-appealing vibe. Jasmine Sushi Thai (8105 Moores Lane, Brentwood) has great sushi and is also worth visiting for your Thai food fix. For genuine Lao cuisine, gracious Smiling Elephant (2213 8th Ave. S.) can satisfy your craving for epic pad Thai in a gorgeous little gem of a restaurant in the antique district. Check the curry schedule—just one version is offered daily. No curries contain dairy ingredients, and all but one of the seven are gluten-free.

Looking for a little Korean, with a dose of Japanese and a street food vibe? Check out Funk Seoul Brother (230 Franklin Road) in the Factory at Franklin, which was fittingly a former stove factory. What started out as a terrific food truck has become a must-visit restaurant as well, with fresh poke, a noodle bar—and still active truck (check out funkseoulbro.com to find out where they’re parked). For serious Korean barbecue, pay a visit to Seoul Garden (4928 Edmondson Pike). For Chinese cuisine, Corner Asian (210 Franklin Road, Brentwood and 10656 Concord Road, Nolensville) features Taiwanese trained chefs, and back menu pages brimming with native cuisine and spice palates. Chinatown (3900 Hillsboro Pike) has been a staple for a reason, as has its sibling, Lucky Bamboo (5855 Charlotte Pike)—both with authentic Sichuan menus. It’s an understatement to say that the Nashville-area cuisine scene has a lot to offer— some of it is off the beaten path, but every bit of it is worth tasting.

THE NAME OF THE GAME How sports are on the upswing in Music City

Just over two decades ago, the very thought of Music City becoming home to one major professional sports team—let alone two—was unthinkable to many in the region. But the National Football League’s Tennessee Titans are already gearing up for their 22nd season in town, a tenure that’s seen the team reach one Super Bowl and more recently, a record three straight winning seasons. Across the Cumberland River sits the National Hockey League’s Nashville Predators, who advanced to the Stanley Cup Final in 2017 and recently completed their 20th season. The Nashville Sounds, Class Triple-A affiliate to Major League Baseball’s Texas Rangers, have long been a Music City pastime. Far newer to the local sports scene is Nashville SC, which is competing in its second season in the United Soccer League. That team is a precursor for a Major League Soccer franchise, scheduled to begin play in 2020. What’s the fan experience like at these various venues? We’ll start at Nissan Stadium, where upwards of 60,000 fans have gathered on Sundays recently to watch the Titans put together three straight winning seasons. The atmosphere starts to build well before home games, as many supporters park downtown before strolling over the picturesque John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge and entering the stadium parking lot. “We always walk down by the (Cumberland) river on the way to the stadium because it’s so beautiful,” says season ticket-holder Jody Shuba, who’s been attending games with husband Mark, daughter Sarah and son Luke from the franchise’s earliest days. “Especially in late fall, when the temperature might be 75 or 80 degrees, it’s a great environment.“ In a city that’s made a stellar food reputation for itself, it’s no surprise that quality tailgaters abound outside the stadium. Just ask original season ticket-holder Sid Curry, whose family often enjoys a Sunday feast put together by friends. “There’s everything from smoked ribs to mac-and-cheese and greens to cornbread they bring from home,” Curry says. It’s a Southern home-cooked slate full of comfort food.”

Music plays a big part in the day’s experience as well, ranging from a versatile arena band that starts cranking out tunes hours before kick-off, to the weekly rendition of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues”—played with lyrics on the big screen just before the start of the fourth quarter. Traditions play a big part across the river at Bridgestone Arena, where the Predators had recorded 150 straight sellouts at the end of the 2018-19 regular season. Visitors at big games shouldn’t be surprised to see a a few catfish hurled onto the ice, as they’re Nashville’s Southernfried answer to the Detroit Red Wings’ habit of throwing an octopus on the ice before playoff games. It’s not uncommon to see local celebrities such as Carrie Underwood or Luke Bryan sing the National Anthem before playoff games. Nashville SC fans get charged up well before the game, as its four official supporters groups—The Roadies, The Assembly, Music City Supporters and Eastern Front— march into First Tennessee Park 30 minutes before kick-off. Whenever Nashville SC scores, blue-and-gold smoke bombs are set off from a truck in front of the supporters’ section. Then there are the Sounds’ home baseball games, also at First Tennessee Park, where fans get a huge reminder that they’re in Music City, courtesy of The Big Guitar Scoreboard. Its popular Band Box is an outdoor bar located in right field with ping-pong tables, cornhole and shuffleboard.

HONKY TONK HEAVEN Whether you go weak in the knees during the CMAs or you’re here for history, Nashville has a bar to match your “Honky Tonk Attitude.”

©DFREE/SHUTTERSTOCK.COM; (FACING PAGE) ©F11PHOTO/SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

BY MADISON SULLIVAN

Opposite page: As if plucked from a country song, neon signs buzz over Broadway. Above: If you recognize Ole Red’s name, you can likely guess the honky tonk’s owner, Blake Shelton.

When one thinks of Broadway, music likely comes to mind; a production, an evening of entertainment. Nashville’s version of Broadway isn’t theater, but, as one would expect from the place touting the name “Music City USA,” music is also a vital part of its draw. And not just any music. Country music. Stroll down Broadway with your eyes closed and you’ll feel as if you’re riding shotgun, sun in your face, as the driver flicks the radio from station to station, snippets of song floating out to meet you. And, knowing Nashville, the songs wafting from Broadway’s buildings are the radio-worthy tunes you’re imagining. These buildings, both historic fixtures and shiny new structures, house honky tonks. You may recognize the moniker, as it’s been woven into lyrics sung by stars from Hank Williams (“Honky Tonk Blues,” 1952) to Jake Owen (“Down to the Honkytonk,” 2019). Those who follow Owen’s footsteps will find themselves in an entertaining atmosphere, surrounded by memorabilia, classic country symbols (Western wear, trucks and the like), ice-cold beer, Southern fare and boot-stomping tunes. Despite the honky tonk’s one-time reputation as a ramshackle, rowdy space, in recent years, a new crop of honky

tonks has made a mark in downtown, playing off their owners’ brands. Ole Red Nashville is one such establishment. Claiming to have invented the “swanky tonk,” Ole Red offers far more than cheap beer. We’re talking a rooftop bar labeled “L.A.-meetsLower Broad,” live music chosen by Opry Entertainment and a menu that doesn’t skimp on vegan options. Named after Blake Shelton’s chart-topper, “Ol’ Red,” this venue doesn’t shy away from Shelton; right down to the “Some Beach” cocktail. Fans who want to spend a day in their favorite band’s boots can head over to FGL House. As with Ole Red, FGL House puts an emphasis on modern music, specifically Florida Georgia Line’s. Whether you choose to hang out in its ‘90s pop lounge on basement-level, or on the fourth-floor rooftop, which features live music nightly, you’ll be “Sittin’ Pretty.” Don’t miss the menu, as the salads are bandmates Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard’s go-to, on-tour meals, and the cocktails are mixed with their Old Camp Whiskey. Sure, Jason Aldean’s Kitchen and Rooftop Bar features its owner prominently in its name, but one glance at the “Big Green Tractor” over the bar and there’s no question Aldean had a hand in bringing this honky tonk to life. Broadway, eyes shut? With your heightened sense of sound you may be able to pick another noise out of the merriment and melody: the buzzing of neon signs.

Broadway; however, part of its claim to fame lies with its artwork: a massive mural and “The Highwaymen” painting, which once belonged to Waylon Jennings. Music City may sparkle below as you party on a rooftop, but there’s something about grabbing a drink on the ground floor, mere steps from Broadway. Legends Corner fits the bill. Locals and tourists alike spend their evenings dancing in the midst of the countless record covers wallpapering the venue. And a trip down Broadway wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Nudie’s, the embodiment of Music City’s honkytonk scene. Located in a 100-year-old, three-story building, it boasts performances by your next favorite artist, Nashville Hot Chicken, and more memorabilia than one can see in a visit—much of it from namesake Nudie Cohn, the designer who outfitted everyone from Elvis Presley to John Wayne. Branding itself a true Nashville original, Layla’s relies not on fancy fare—although snacks and sandwiches are on the menu—but on another Nashville staple, music, to bring customers through its door. Genres ranging from hillbilly to bluegrass swell to fill the space night after night, drifting up to mingle with the myriad license plates hanging overhead. Still imagining yourself wandering down Broadway, eyes squeezed shut? If so, with your heightened sense of sound, you may be able to pick another noise out of the mixture of merriment and melody: the buzzing of neon signs. Robert’s Western World’s brightly lit sign, for example, invites honkytonk hoppers to make their way into “Honky Tonk Heaven.” Before Robert’s was a beloved bar, it was used as a warehouse and office space for river merchants. From the late ‘50s to the early ‘80s, it was the home of the Sho-Bud Steel Guitar Company. Now, visitors can check out its gift shop, admire the decor and wash their fried bologna sandwich down with a PBR. Known as Nashville’s Home of Traditional Country Music, Robert’s Western World is a must-stop for those seeking, well, honky-tonk heaven. Whether you start your night sipping a themed cocktail paired with a gourmet meal or bellied up to a packed bar, ordering a beer; listening to the newest chart-topper or a tried-and-true tune; surrounded by celebrity or steeped in history, there’s a common denominator: the heart of the honky tonk is country music, as is the heart of Nashville.

Still imagining yourself on

out what Aldean meant when he sang “My Kinda Party” or dig into Momma Aldean’s Peach Cobbler. Clocking in at 30,000 square feet, Luke’s 32 Bridge is a far cry from the hole-in-the-wall honky tonks of yore. Everything, from the sushi eatery (Luke Bryan’s favorite cuisine) to the “Crash My Party” rooftop bar (one of eight bars on the property) is centered on the singer-songwriter. Grab an alcoholic beverage, such as the aptly named “Drunk on You,” and stake out a spot to hear one of the many live music acts playing throughout the day. Not many honky tonks can call their stage grandiose, but Kid Rock’s Big Ass Honky Tonk & Rock ‘n’ Roll Steakhouse does—and can do so with confidence, as it’s two stories tall. The “Redneck Paradise” invites visitors to rock along to live music, devour one of the steaks that line its menu or kick back and catch a game—screens can be found throughout the five-story structure. Located in the oldest building on Broadway, and named the No. 1 honky tonk in Nashville by Billboard magazine, AJ’s Good Time Bar has no problem drawing visitors off the street to the stage—whether they’re up there themselves, partaking in nightly karaoke, or singing along with a band while drinking a beer. Alan Jackson’s own memorabilia adorns the wood paneled walls. While the majority of these fun- and food-filled honky tonks have recently burst onto the scene, one joint walks the line between the new and the historic. Enter Johnny Cash Kitchen and Saloon. Located next to the Johnny Cash Museum, this honky tonk, opened in 2019, serves soul food and embodies the Man in Black’s character. Spend some time sipping moonshine in Tootsies Orchid Lounge and you’ll feel as though Cash could step through the door at any moment. While only a short jaunt down Broadway, Tootsies is a different type of honky tonk. The historic building is known not for the stars who own the place but those who’ve frequented it because of its legendary status. Tootsies can proudly say Willie Nelson got his first songwriting gig after singing within its purple walls; and highcaliber performers still frequent its stages today. Stars are also known to take to the stage at The Stage on

PARTING SHOT

City of Opportunity NASHVILLE IS FULL OF PHOTO OPPS, SO BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE MUSIC CITY, BE SURE TO SNAP A SELFIE WITH ONE OF THE MANY MURALS THAT GRACE ITS STREETS—THEY’VE BEEN CREATED BY LOCAL AND INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN ARTISTS,

RESTAURANTS, GARAGE DOORS, WATER TANKS, EVEN OLD SILOS. WE FAVOR THE “I BELIEVE IN NASHVILLE-12SOUTH,” ONE IN A SERIES BY NASHVILLIAN ADRIEN SAPORITI. 84
