njoy the beauty of an empty Island without feeling the temptation to start talking to a painted volleyball. Located in the Indonesian Riau Archipelago, Palau Joyo was originally designed as the private residence of an illustrious shipping family, but is now comprised of eight exclusive beachfront villas, each carefully designed to blend in with the island’s natural surroundings. Guests can take advantage of the residence’s 140-foot charter yacht for a leisurely afternoon of swimming, snorkeling or picnicking at the gorgeous sandbanks nearby. The untarnished white sand and lush tropical surrounding is only enhanced by the resort’s sophisticated, yet understated style. Easily accessible from Singapore and Bintan, Joyo Island is said to have some of the greatest sunsets in the world, and guarantees the privacy to make you feel as if you are the only one watching them.

MARKUS HAUB BY

JACK ARCHER A GER M AN ARTI S T WITH A PA S S ION FOR S P EED, Markus Haub captures iconic racing machines from the 1960's and 1970's through his own innovative perspective. His technique leads to works of art that make you think twice about what's hanging on your wall and what's sitting in your driveway.

THE ART HOW DID THE PAINTING OF YOUR " RAC ING LEGEND S " S ERIE S S TART ? I started to work in my special technique ten designer I was looking for a change to my daily years ago. First on themes from movies with job. I wanted to find different ways to express Milla Jovovich. “The 5th Element” or “The Million beauty in texture, color, detail or composition. Dollar Hotel” inspired me a lot. But after a while I rediscovered my passion for Then I developed paintings with views on cities classic cars and the desire to paint them. I went like Barcelona or Los Angeles. Working as a car more and more to historic car races in Germany,

France or Spain and always came back with lots of photos, which I then transform into my paintings. That’s how the Racing Legends were born. The series will always be continued. WHAT I S S O S P E C IAL A B OUT THAT 1 9 6 0 ' S AND 1 9 7 0 ' S RAC E CAR S ? WH Y PARTI C ULAR INTERE S T IN THAT P ERIOD? I am born in the 70s, but I don’t remember The older cars also looked very different to most of these cars from my childhood. Now each other. Ferrari GTO, Porsche 917, Ford I discover them like new. It’s the dramatic but GT40, Lancia Stratos…all legendary cars. All very pure shape of the cars. It’s even sometimes different. It seems as if engineers and designers different in reality than on photos. I remember had more freedom at that time. The cars had seeing the Renault Alpine A220 for the first more character and were not so perfect like today’s race cars. Also the corporate colors time. It’s absolutely stunning. like Gulf or Martini Racing came up and gave some cars a distinctive look. The stickers with the numbers and some stripes, that was it. Not so overloaded like today. Racing was very dangerous and the drivers were heroes. Jochen Rind, Jim Clark, Nicki Lauda, James Hunt, Jackie Steward..they risked their life and some lost it. Steve McQueen’s movie “Le Mans” captured it very well and it’s a great document of the time.

THE ART

WHI C H OF THE C URRENT CAR M ODEL S HA S THE POTENTIAL TO BECOME THE CLASSICS OF TOMORROW? I think with some years of distance all racing cars will become classics. But I am not sure, if they can be still maintained. Old racing cars are purely mechanical. And its already very difficult to keep them running and organize the parts. But with all the electronically components it will probably be impossible. THE MUSIC

The California based rock group Young The Giant have the perfect balance between jazz rhythms and surf pop harmonies that make it the ideal soundtrack as we transition from summer to fall. I sat down down with lead singer Sameer Gadhia and asked him a few questions. • The band is originally from Irvine, CA. How has the southern California lifestyle shaped your sound? • I think the west coast lifestyle has proliferated our infatuation with the “groove,” an over-arching cadence of dance-ability. Everything ain’t so ruffled up collar here. • Everyone in the group balances the rock n roll look with just the right amount of pacific coast casualness. How important do you feel style is to any band? • I think “style” can be a bonus, but is not essential to any one band. Then again, style is quite subjective, and can be validated by the mysticism of the music. Geeky disheveled-ness can look poignant and relevant. Just look at early Radiohead. Fashion and music are a strange concoction. • How would you define a “lifestyle of cool”? A lifestyle of cool is one that goes unannounced and under promoted. One that makes a statement purely out of lack of caring. One that lives a lifestyle of cool never associates themselves with the term.

So reads Hanni el Khatib’s short biography on his website. The Los Angeles-based musician subscribes to a brand of bluesy scuzzed-out rock. He not only channels and croons his love songs like a greaser

but dresses the part, too. His debut album, Will the Guns Come Out, would be a shame to pass over when it comes out next month. -Ian Macdonald

I

f the ice caps do melt and swallow all the continents, Leonardo DiCaprio will have every right to say, “I told you so.” At some point amid his bountiful career of hit films, Dicaprio found the time to become a full-fledged environmental activist.

During the first five months of 2009, the Cortech factory cut its steel scraps by two-thirds from the previous year. The factory also reduced water consumption by 70% and fuel consumption by 11% while increasing productivity.

Sure, Leonardo DiCaprio is not the first celebrity to devote himself to a cause or plight. In fact, these days it seems like every actor’s press agent is lining him or her up with one type of cause or another. Yet few have so passionately engulfed themselves in their causes as has DiCaprio. In 2007, DiCaprio produced and narrated the documentary The 11th Hour which details not only global warming, but deforestation, mass species extinction and the depletion of the ocean’s habitats. The film may not have been as widely seen as Titanic, but it showed a commitment from DiCaprio that he wanted to do more than be just another A-list celebrity.

Tag Heuer and DiCaprio also collaborated on the Aquaracer 500M Limited Edition watches, which will generate royalties for the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Green Cross International.

Recently, DiCaprio has found a more stylish way to help the environment. DiCaprio has been in a partnership with high-end watch designer Tag Heuer, a company that has been working towards sustainability for years. Since DiCaprio’s involvement, the company has hired agreen specialist to set up new sustainability policies.

With DiCaprio’s passionate support, Tag Heuer has been able to flourish under these new green procedures. “By making meaningful donations to organizations like the National Resources Defense Council and Green Cross International as a part of their business model, TAG Heuer has shown other companies that they can do good AND make a profit.” While his amazing catalogue of films speak for themselves, it is DiCaprio’s collaboration of sleek style and environmental sustainability that makes him a gentleman for the ages.

BMW 328 HOMMAGE Concept

It’s no easy task to create something new that pays reverence to the past. Especially doing so in a way to guarantee that neither the past nor the future are too overbearing in the design. BMW’s latest concept car, the 328 Homage, manages to walk this thin line with both style and class. 041

C

onsidered one of the most successful and attractive sports cars of the 1930’s, the original BMW 328 was celebrated for its use of systematic lightweight construction, aerodynamic lines, optimum engine types and outstanding suspension technology. It laid the foundation for a new vehicle concept- that performance only leads to success if combined with perfect design. Unfortunately, as with all concept vehicles, it may be some time before these ones get their chance on the open road.

alking into The Federal is as close as one can get to experiencing the old Hollywood-land of yore, while still feeling connected to the Los Angeles scene. Located in North Hollywood, it is a welcome respite from the chaos that can often accompany some of the city’s more congested locations. The bar and restaurant is housed in one of the oldest buildings in the San Fernando Valley, and the décor stays true to the building’s bloodline. As the name insinuates, the place began its life as a bank, and has a vault doorway separating the front and back bars. Described by Chef Louis Fuentes as a Gastro-Lounge, The Federal places a great deal of importance on the quality of their food and beverages. A healthy selection of craft brews from around the U.S. as well as a wide range of specialty bourbons ensure that the modern gentleman will not go thirsty. For those

Chef Fuentes and his team place an emphasis on providing guests with a menu that is as unique as the bar itself. Burgers made with house ground beef blended with short rib and bone marrow, wing sauce infused with smoked fennel, and other dishes such as the “Fresh Catch,” utilize local and sustainable seafood programs to ensure quality and freshness in an environmentally responsible manner. The Federal’s “New American” cuisine complements its classic American motif. THE Q &A

with Luke Thomas Johnson

1.

I have been struggling to think of fun things to do with my girlfriend, what are some cheap exciting things that will keep her interested in me? The most important thing to remember when it comes to keeping your ladyfriend happy is to put in a little effort. Your girl will love nothing more than having the satisfaction of knowing that you went out of your way and burned a couple calories to plan an outing on her behalf. When it comes to planning activities that won’t break the bank, look no further than out your window. Finding a secluded beach or a nice hike should be no more difficult than a quick Google search, or stopping into your local REI. Getting outside and getting active will get your endorphins pumping, and ultimately make you both much happier. If you’re of the paler complexion or have an aversion to Vitamin D, a trip to a local museum may be in order. Most galleries have one day a week where admission is free, so plan accordingly to stay on the cheap. 2.

I want to get into better shape but despise the gym and the general mentality that seems to go along with it, what are some alternative ways to get fit? One of the biggest struggles for newly liberated high school graduates is avoiding the freshman 15. Unfortunately for some of us, that freshman 15 turns into the sophomore 25 and before you realize it you’re an overweight, out of shape adult that would get beaten up by your 17-year-

086

old self. It is a process that can be tough to reverse. I personally struggled with keeping off the pounds after years of trying to ensure that Anheuser-Busch would survive the recession. Arnold Schwarzenegger said it best, “Abs are made in the kitchen.” While this will not make you fit, there is truth in what the former Governator says. The easiest way to reverse your health woes is to watch what you are putting into your body. I personally maintain a fairly strict lowcarb, high-protein diet. That is unless I come across something of interest, in which case I will chow down. Rather than go through your day eating crap that will make you feel as such, practice self-control and save the calories for something worthwhile. When it comes to staying active, find something that you enjoy doing. Activities such as surfing, cycling, or hiking are great means of getting exercise, without having to stare at Sportscenter on mute. Local parks and recreation centers are also great resources when it comes to finding adult sports leagues that will not only keep you active, but also fuel your competitive streak. Working out is much more satisfying when you are working toward something; without the proper diet however visible results will be minimal and frustration sets in. Once you get the ball rolling and find a routine that works for you, things will startfalling into place.

COOL NOTE

For more on diet and exercise outside of the gym, I recommended the book “Four Hour Body: Becoming Superhuman” by Timothy Ferriss.

4.

Some of my favorite pairs of pants are starting to get a bit tattered. At what point does the frayed jean look turn into the ratty, worn out look? It always brings a tear to my eye when I realize that one of my favorite pairs of pants is about to go from being slightly distressed to a full-on Wayne Campbell. My passion for skateboarding has always been a major detriment to the lifespan of much of my wardrobe, and I have gone to great lengths to try to resurrect some of my favorite pants. Short term remedies such as iron-on patches placed on the inside of the pants, or dropping a couple bucks at the cleaners can help to hold together tears in areas that aren’t too stressed by general movement. This should help to cure some of the aesthetically unpleasing blemishes in your slacks, as long as you avoid the “EXTREME CLOSEUP.” If fraying around the heel area is an issue, we need to take a step back for a second. The baggy jean look rode off into the sunset hand-in-hand with the Boost Mobile walkie-talkie. If you’re wearing pants that fit properly it should be impossible to get the cuff to even physically touch the ground around your shoe. Now you may ask “but what if I’m wearing sandals?” to which I would reply, “don’t even go there.” Jeans + Sandals = Hollister floor model. I don’t mean to sound pretentious and I personally love the look of a well-worn pair of jeans, but save the tattered and torn ones for when Anti-Flag comes to town.

Being a native of Utah, I spent more time on the snow than on the water. With a new job close to Malibu, I’m trying to get into surfing. Where do I begin? As someone who learned to surf at a young age and was swimming, body surfing, and body boarding at an even younger age, I know the thrill, fear, and joy that the sport has to offer. Also as someone who has tried to teach others to surf, I find that being unfamiliar with the ocean, and not being a strong swimmer play into surfing ability far more than your abilities on the board. If you really want to pursue surfing as an independent endeavor, it’s important to have a strong understanding of the ocean. Go grab a pair of duck feet and bodysurf a couple times; being neck-deep in the water helps you to get a feel for currents and gets you used to waves crashing on your head. It is important to find either a reliable teacher, or enroll at your local surf camp (usually conveniently located in a crusty van near any major Southern California pier.) Surfline. com is an invaluable resource that has a variety of classifieds and advertisements based around your locale that will point you in the right direction. Now these camps may not leave you surfing like Dane Reynolds, but by the end but they will provide you with all the valuable tips, knowledge, and safety etiquette that will give you the confidence and knowledge you need to truly enjoy surfing and attempt to build your skills.
