e are no longer influenced solely by our surroundings. We are entering a new age, where everything and anything is not only accessible, but impressionable. It is easy to get caught up in this global community, easy to fully embrace the styles and ideals of the world and forget yourself. In this rush to become global citizens we must remember not to lose our unique cultural identity. We must be precisely what we are; we must be that with confidence. Take what the world gives you, and make it your own. Everything is subjective. We would be fools to think that what we do is applicable to one and all, but we encourage you to watch and listen, take what you like and make it uniquely yours.

THE ART

FRAMED by : Keefe Dempsey

T

hose puny little digital photo frames that were supposed to be the future never quite seemed to catch on. They lacked more value than that of just a gimmicky way for your mom to cycle through old vacation photos. They lacked artistic magnitude. Yugo Nakamura has surpassed these early attempts to make digital art tangible. His FRAMED project has taken these little digital photo frames and expanded them into 40 inch screens based on a Samsung LED HDTV. A WiFi connection to an iPhone app allows you to purchase modern classics or motion art and upload it directly to the screen. Pricing is currently unavailable but it provides a healthy alternative to anything currently hanging from your wall. If you ever grow bored with what you have, a new piece is only a click away.

THE ART

Robert Longo Series for Supreme by : Keefe Dempsey

R

obert Longo may not be a familiar name to the average skateboarder, but after a brief glance at his resume one will understand why the American artist teamed up with Supreme to decorate a series of skateboard decks. Featured in museums ranging from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1989 to the Museu Colecção Berardo in Lisbon, Portugal in 2010 Longo is both an acclaimed artist and a bit of a rebel. He has directed music videos for bands such as New Order and Megadeth, and even has a feature film under his belt, Johnny Mnemonic. There is an attitude in his work, an unabashed feeling of darkness that doesn’t need to be completely clear or understood. Some of the decks are reminiscent of his celebrated series “Men in Cities,” the original pieces of which were featured in the film “American Psycho.” Perhaps art of such contemporary magnitude belongs on a wall as opposed to under a pair of beaten up Vans. But his art has always had a punk sentiment, so maybe he would prefer you dirty it up rather than let it rot on some white-walled room.

THE SIGNIFICANT OTHER

Caitlyn Chase Cavier & Cashmere by : Keefe Dempsey

T

o name a company Caviar & Cashmere is a statement of intent, something Caitlyn Chase was well aware of when she decided on it.

“I think Caviar & Cashmere are two things that are synonymous with luxury. There is no finer food, nor fabric. Also, it didn’t hurt that C & C are also my initials.” Chase grew up in Malibu, California, with a successful entrepreneur as a father and a mother who has been in interior design for over 25 years. It is this marriage of smart business and creative passion that Chase attributes to her desire to start C & C. Yet before she was the 23-year-old partner in a high-end cashmere clothing line, Chase had already established herself as a freelance writer. Starting at 16, she has written for over 20 publications including Touch Weekly, 944, Haute Living, and Esquire. 010

“I write mostly about what inspires me: luxury, travel and fashion.” Chase and her mother found a supplier of cashmere in Mongolia that made the purest, best quality cashmere they had ever felt and both decided that a line of cashmere products would be their next endeavor. One of the most impressive aspects of Caitlyn Chase is how down to earth she is, a quality that is overshadowed only by her beauty. “I am drawn to luxury design and lifestyle because I like to see people happy. Luxury isn’t always about material things, it’s about indulging in what brings you joy, whatever that may be. Luxury is the pursuit of pleasure and delight. To me luxury is not about mindless material consumption and the decadence associated with it, it is about the pursuit of dreams and ultimate happiness.”

&A Q& Q A What are the main components to a “lifestyle of cool”? The only component to being cool is to be effortlessly “you.” Authenticity and individuality are key constituents to a “lifestyle of cool.” What are the most important things a man should consider when putting together his wardrobe? I come from the school of thought that money can buy you fashion, but it can’t buy you style. A man that has style knows how to wear his clothes, accessorize, and never look like he tried too hard. The first things I notice about a man are his shoes and watch. The shoes and watch reflect a man’s style and personality. What’s the best way for a man to impress on a first date? First rule of thumb: chivalry is not dead. Girls like to be swooned. Plan out something creative and thoughtful. Please, don’t take her somewhere she has been before, and make sure everything goes off without a hitch. Don’t run out of gas or forget your wallet- you won’t get a chance for the second date!

What’s the most attractive characteristic a gentleman can have? I am drawn to men who possess unwavering loyalty. Whether it be loyalty to their family, friends, work, or girlfriend, a man with a strong sense of devotion is irresistible. What is your favorite travel destination? I spend every summer in Turkey and Greece. I love visiting Istanbul because of its rich culture and history and I discover something new every time I visit. After a few days exploring the city, I like to fly to the south of Turkey to the beachside town of Bodrum, where I get on a boat and sail on the Aegean Sea for weeks on end. It’s pure heaven. What is your favorite car? I’m a total tomboy when it comes to cars. I am obsessed! I like a fast car with clean lines. I drive a black on black Jaguar XKR at the moment, but am always switching it up. My dream car is the Ferrari Enzo. I guess I have to sell a lot of cashmere for that! What is your favorite film? Films are a way to escape for two hours, so I like to escape to a fun, jovial place, like in any of Judd Apatow’s films.

We st Co a st c u l t u re is hidden behind the ve i l o f s u n s h i n e; but the sun is not the only thing that motivates and inspires us. The truest form of culture here is based on the earth, based on the ocean, based on the collision of both, and the history of the people who have lived alongside that collision. There is plenty of West Coast clothing that fails to see this, that uses colors and patterns gratuitously as if they think we are all blinded to their designs. Yet occasionally a company comes along that captures a true sense of the West Coast culture in their line. It manages to be colorful without being bright, and can be worn just as easily on a sunny day on the sand as it can be worn on a rainy morning as you wait for a swell. The Santa Barbara-based brand RIVIERA CLUB is one of those companies. The style possesses the feeling of Pacific casual wear combined with luxury fabrics and cuts, a mixture that has captured the attention of some of the world’s most influential retailers.

Q &A with Co-founder Mr. Derek Buse How did Riviera Club start? The three of us (Joe, Greg and myself) were playing a round of golf at the Westlake Village course and were kicking around the idea of starting a menswear brand. The ideas started flowing and the concept was created. Where did the name come from? We founded the line in Santa Barbara which is known as the “American Riviera.” What are the inspirations behind the brand?

Where do you want to take Riviera Club from here? We want to keep things small and tight but have some big plans to expand in areas that are unique to our customer. We want to work with other like-minded brands on concepts that keep each season fresh and new.

There is something similar between

A MAN IN A SUIT AND A RACE CAR. It is in the sleekness, the tight and compact feel of both that they share the same lofty visual aesthetics. It should be no surprise then that Hugo Boss and McLaren Formula 1 race team, two of the most premiere groups from each field, have been partners now for close to 30 years. It is a partnership that has seen some of the greatest racers in the history of Formula 1 pass through their ranks. “People ask me why McLaren’s partnership with HUGO BOSS has endured so successfully for 30 years. The answer, I tell them, is straightforward; we both share the same values of excellence, a belief in style and a passion for performance and perfection,” said Martin Whitmarsh, Team Principal Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. This partnership continues to attract racers such as Lewis Hamilton, who is considered one of the greatest talents in Formula 1. Hamilton has been on the team since 2007 and in 2008 he won the Drivers’ Championship with his team. Much like the partnership between HUGO BOSS and Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton is a fitting combination of speed and style.

Real explosions, real people jumping out of planes and gliding through cities in flight suits. Director Michal Bay wanted it to seem as real as possible, a fact that LaBeouf knows all too well: on set for “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” he got his eye torn up during a shoot, yet was back in action an hour later despite several stitches.

The biggest change between this film and the last two is the female counterpart. Megan Fox was the breakout star of the first two films but she has been replaced by Victoria’s Secret model Rosie HuntingtonWhitley. The change will be exciting to see and won’t be too hard on the eyes either. LaBeouf has ensured that his Disney Channel days will not overshadow his career. He has proven to be more than another Macaulay Culkin and has defined himself as a premiere American actor balancing the perfect amount of charisma, style and talent amounting to a gentleman in Hollywood today. 057

_The answers you need to achieve that lifestyle of cool. With our expert in the field

Luke Thomas Johnson

Q &A My grilling prowess is somewhat limited; how can I break out of this frozen patty and Kraft single rut? The problem with pre-packaged patties is that they lack any real seasoning and once they are cooked through they are roughly as appetizing as a pair of well worn TOMS. The simplest way to avoid this problem is to make the patties yourself. Pick up a package of ground beef and break out the spice rack your Mom gave you as a housewarming present. I like to doctor my meat up with a generous helping of onion powder, garlic salt, salt, pepper and Worcestershire. You’ll be able to enjoy a homemade burger that will rival whatever your local gastropub has as the “standard”.

060

How can I wear a straw fedora this summer and not come off looking like I’m trying to be Bruno Mars? Like any accessory in your closet, everything has a proper time and place. I personally would save the straw fedora for a select few occasions. The Kentucky Derby, a Central American vacation, or paired with a linen suit on a hot day are about the only the times you’ll catch me with that kind of headwear. But most importantly, steer away from larger brimmed fedoras to avoid looking like the proprietor of a Jurassic-themed park.

What are your suggestions to properly prepare for a road trip? --Road trips aren’t for everyone. The high maintenance girlfriend might be better suited for your credit card airline miles and the “funny guy” friend is never funny in the 18th hour. Pick your team accordingly. --Secure a GPS system if you’re not already equiped. Trust us - you don’t want to be fumbling around with your DROID map system and your co-pilot shouldn’t have to figure out how to properly fold a map in 2011. --Make a list prior to packing. There’s no fun in forgetting the car charger for your phone. --Have a fresh run of podcasts and a deep music library to keep you entertained when the conversation inevitably runs dry. I recommend our podcast show on repeat. Particularly the ones where I host. --When it comes to packing snacks, think Whole Foods over Funyuns. Otherwise, you’ll be asking around for P90x DVDs once you reach your destination.

THE MUSIC

Q &A Where did you find inspiration when you were younger? Who do you look to today? I was always really inspired by people who were honest and genuine in what they do. When I was younger musically I looked up to people like Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, and Neil Young. Those were people who were always pretty uncompromising and genuine in the way they approached what they did. I still care about the same kind of people. I had the opportunity to see Neil Young play the other day and was really blown away. It was like it woke me from a dream I’d been having for years and was amazing and beautiful.

here is something haunting about Luke Rathborne’s music. It lingers, it comes from emotions too vague to place. The Northeastern born musician self-released his debut album After Dark in 2007, receiving acknowledgement from NME and Interview Magazine. He has since joined Dilettante and his sound has developed, become hazier, more forlorn- positive steps for a singer/ songwriter combating the harsh realities of the world.

His double release EP I Can Be One/ Dog Years is mellow but has enough range to make it a solid and positive piece of music. “TOMORROW” BY LUKE RATHBORNE BUY IN ITUNES

You moved to New York at 18 to pursue music. Was it hard to adjust to the city and the lifestyle? I loved coming to New York City. I lived in a weird place when I first showed up. There was a combination of excitement and anxiety but it was all very freeing. Your music has a particular attitude or feeling surrounding it, is that something that you think translates to who you are and how you feel? Sometimes I think that’s the case. Sometimes songs are about people and meant for them to interpret. How would you define a “lifestyle of cool”? I’ve always looked up to people who had one thing in common; they were really tolerant of all kinds of people, whether they be gay, straight male/female or transgendered.

The story of their success is quite the modern tale. After posting songs on their Facebook page, a local Australian radio station took notice and from there Mark Ronson began to support and play the band on his New York radio show. An indie label record deal soon followed. It is the type of music that can be on repeat for hours on end and still sound new with every listen.
