I HAVE WOMEN ON MY MIND

Clive Williams, CEO/ Publisher _________________________

My initial intention was to pay tribute to my mother who has been deceased for 18 years; to me she is an unsung hero whose achievements should be chronicled in the history books of her time. Instead, her contributions, which influenced the lives of so many for good, will soon be lost with the passing of its beneficiaries. There are so many women like my mother whose heroism has gone unreported and unrecorded, and generations now and those to come will have lost the meaning of authentic Matriarchal power and influence on their lives. While growing up in my parents’ home and environment, I experienced firsthand the balance between Matriarchal and Patriarchal power, the subtle and sometimes not so subtle exchange of leadership, and the wise interplay practiced by people who had no post-secondary education or psychological training. My mother and father were my super-heroes - not because they were perfect, but because they made me the beneficiary of their reservoir of love, compassion, empathy, respect, perseverance and pursuit of justice. I learned very early that however much I loved and feared my dad, the real creator and conductor of my environment, 6 | www.gowhereitzat.com

the arbiter of my joy, peace and happiness was my mother – the matriarch. Let me state, for the record, that I grew up believing until I was in my late teens, that my dad was made of steel; he was tough, unflinching, courageous, unafraid of any man or circumstance, but kind and thoughtful to the downtrodden. Yet, when my mom spoke to him, she evoked his full attention and cooperation. If necessary, a discussion would ensue, after which decisions were made and the matter concluded. In the case of any aggression directed at the family or any such hostile situation, my father took the reins of power and quelled the threat - but mom was always behind him. That formula seemed simple enough to me until I married, then it became obvious that my mom and dad possessed some sort of genius that had eluded their offspring. Not to be condemned a failure in that very special though irrational state called marriage (monogamy), I prevailed - but only with the help of a woman whose strength and resilience matched that of my mother. It is ironic that my closest married male friends, and some of their wives had voted my marriage the least likely to succeed - such is the perverse cruelty of friendship - but 43 years later, many have eaten their predictions (and maybe some of their mates...). So I jest, but what they don’t know is, I take no credit for those formidable years - the matriarch made that happen; wife, mother, psychologist, saint, angel of mercy (and sometimes the dark angel- but angel nonetheless), has demonstrated a capacity to live outside the limitations and constraints of the little box. The message in the little box says, “whenever the going gets rough, you better get away as fast and as far as

you can.” Instead, I sincerely believe that my wife helped to coin the adage, “every setback is a setup for a comeback.”

So having experienced strong WOMEN in my life, I unreservedly celebrate the success of women who are making a difference in our lives while they are busy making history. The women on the cover of this issue epitomize the highest and best in service and commitment to their families and communities. They represent what our girls and younger women should aspire to attain: dedication, discipline, courage, determination, charm and grace. Their collective education, coupled with their professional achievements place them at the very top of their careers, and firmly as leaders in a large and diverse New York community. Join me in paying tribute to them - not just for Women’s History Month, but for all time, because they stand for our highest ideals, our hopes and aspirations and those of our children; they are trailblazers, warrior women who are breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes. They are former New York City Council member, Dr.Una. S.T Clarke, her daughter Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, the history making first mother-daughter succession in the City Council; former Jamaican Consul General to New York, Dr.Genieve Brown Metzger; and Dentist and Educator, Dr. Marlene ReynoldsCox. Please, familiarize yourself with their body of work, share them with your children - particularly your daughters - so we can increase the dialogue of positive imagery, community service, hard work, discipline and professionalism. We at Whereitzat are grateful for your contribution to the communities you serve, and creating for us a history that inspires us all, thank you and best wishes in all your endeavors.

Editor’s Desk It began with

A WORD… Words never fail to excite and provoke people. They affect our emotions. Our emotions affect our thoughts and our thoughts determine the very experiences which ultimately shape our lives. The Bible tells us that “In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God and the word was God” (John 1:1). To the casual reader with a good understanding of proper English syntax, this verse looks like a complete contradiction. Its

verbiage implies that the word was in God’s possession, and was therefore a separate entity distinct from God, yet may be used by God as a tool for specific purposes. However the verse closes by stating “the word was God,” which means that there is no distinction between God and the word. The reason why the verse is written in this seemingly confusing manner is because the writer’s intention was to convey the fact that a transition is taking place between The Creator and its relationship with the word. You see, what we sometimes forget is that God is an artist, and like any other artist, God uses a tool as a means to express its artistry. For Charlie Parker that tool came in the form of a saxophone. For Michael Angelo it was the paintbrush. For God it is the word. All great artists take

the tools that they use and make those tools a part of themselves. That is why no one can take a great artist’s tool and reduplicate that artist’s work. It might come out similar, but it won’t be quite the same. An artist of this caliber has given his soul to the tool. He is the tool and the tool is him. There is no separation between the two. God, the Supreme Artist, uses the most powerful of all tools and that tool is the word. Much like any other tool, NO word is inherently good or bad. It’s all about the intent of the user and the circumstantial context in which that word is used. I sincerely hope that you, the reader, find great pleasure in the words printed in this issue of WhereItzAt. Adika Butler Editor-In-Chief

Usain Bolt with the 2013 Laureus Award THE WORLD’S FASTEST MAN, Jamaican Usain Bolt, is no stranger to winning and he could very well take another award for a fourth time. Bolt, the IAAF World Athlete of the Year for 2013 has been nominated for the 2014 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award. Bolt, a three-time winner of the award and the recipient in 2013, leads the men’s nominations along with fellow double world and Olympic champion Mo Farah. Outside of athletics, the

10 | www.gowhereitzat.com

other nominees are US basketball player Lebron James, Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal, Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and German formula one driver Sebastian Vettel. The Laureus World Sports Awards recognizes sporting achievement during the calendar year 2013 and is the premier honors event on the international sporting calendar. The winners are voted by the Laureus World Sports Academy, the ultimate sports jury, made up of 46 of the greatest sportsmen and sportswomen of all time. If Bolt were to win, he would tie the record of four Laureus awards, currently held by Swiss tennis player Roger Federer. The 15th Laureus World Sports Awards will be unveiled at a globally televised Awards Ceremony staged in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Wednesday, March 26th. Also nominated for this year’s award is another Jamaica, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the 2014 Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year for 2013. Double world champion sprinter Fraser-Pryce is joined by world pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva, while other nominees include German footballer Nadine Angerer, US swimmer Missy Franklin, Slovenian skier Tina Maze and US tennis player Serena Williams.

The news comes as Asafa Powell, the former 100-m world record holder, will not find out on 10thApril what ban, if any, he is to serve for a failed drugs test last year. The Jamaican, 31, tested positive for banned stimulant oxilofrine in June 2013 and faces up to a two year ban. Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson could both be banned from athletics for up to two years In final submissions in Kingston on Wednesday, his legal team appealed for leniency for what is a first offence. Sherone Simpson, who failed a test at the same event, will receive her verdict on April 8th. Both Powell and Simpson, who were provisionally suspended in July, argued for the minimum suspension, on the grounds of minimal fault. However, Jamaica’s Anti-Doping Commission lawyer argued that they were negligent and had blindly trusted the physical trainer whom both blame for their positive tests. The trainer – Chris Xuereb – denies supplying a supplement known as Epiphany D1, which contains the banned substance. Courtesy of NewsAmericasNow.com

Reggae star I-Octane is igniting the New Year with his new album My Journey, available worldwide in stores and online on March 4, 2014 from DJ Frass/Tad’s Record. Born Byiome Muir inClarendon, Jamaica, I-Octane has been blazing a trail for himself at home and internationally ever since hitting the scene over 5 years ago, and has accomplished the rare feat of consistently remaining relevant in a fickle reggae landscape, receiving continuous airplay across reggae formats globally with his flourishing catalog. A special project with his long-time musical collaborator and friend Andre “DJ Frass” Gordon, My Journey delves inside the soul and sound of this prolific artist, whose innate talents, conscious lyrical offerings and highenergy performances remain unparalleled. Reggae meets lovers rock on this 16-track masterpiece, which features guest appearances from fellow reggae luminaries Gentleman and Ky-Manie Marley, and songstress Alaine. Staying true to his signature sound that fuses velvety vocals and memorable hooks over catchy rhythms, My Journey lives up to its name as all tracks are penned by the multi-faceted entertainer, with a few singles co-written by producer DJ Frass. 12 | www.gowhereitzat.com

“Musically, this album represents my growth as an artist and as a person,” reveals I-Octane. “Over the years, my perspective on a lot of things have changed and I’m now seeing things not just from a local standpoint but from a more global perspective. This album is not just for a particular group, it is for everybody and the music and content reflect that.” The entire album was produced by Jamaican hit-maker DJ Frass, who says even though this collaborative album has been in conception for years, once the two friends decided the time was right, it only took one month for all the tracks to be recorded in his studio. “It feels good to do this album with I-Octane because he and I are like family, we’re like brothers,” discloses DJ Frass.“I-Octane is a very good artist and we’ve been working together for a long time. So doing this album and being on this journey with him is extremely fulfilling.” Jamaican imprint Tad’s Record teams up with producer DJ Frass to deliver I-Octane’s work of love to the masses. “When the opportunity arose for us to work with I-Octane, we gladly accepted,” states Tad Dawkins, President of Tad’s Record. “He is one artist that we saw great potential in from the release of his first single years ago, and he has lived up to and surpassed all the expectations there were for his career.” I-Octane has been making the rounds on the

international circuit, touring and introducing his new album to audiences far and wide. The first single, “Love You Like I Do,” has been receiving massive fanfare and radio play, at home and across reggae platforms worldwide. Its beautifully crafted, vintage-styled video was also released and is currently in steady rotation on television channels. The album is currently being mastered and the final track list will be released to media and fans, in the coming weeks. With his journey now documented in time, I-Octane looks forward to bringing his new music to fans everywhere, via the album and touring, and even has several album release events planned to properly launch “My Journey to the world”.

ENTERTAINMENT Notice to Black Artists from Music Industry Titans: Your services are no longer needed... Dear BLACK ARTISTS, We regret to inform you that the need for your services will soon come to an end as we enter a critical restructuring period. Fortunately, after having spent nearly a century meticulously studying your art, language, fashion, and lifestyle, we have learned enough to confidently move forward without your assistance. We thank you for your contributions but have decided to make some necessary changes as a result of your decreasing value. Focus groups show that consumers are looking for more relatable images. While 2013 marked the first time in Billboard’s 55 year history that there were no black artists on the Hot 100 chart, this was a great year for us with Justin Timberlake, Robin Thicke, and Macklemore claiming the #1 spot on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart, proving that market demands are shifting. Consequently, in the next few months, we will be gradually phasing out your positions as we finalize this reorganization. In the meantime, we ask you to continue with business as usual, training your replacements Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieberuntil instructed otherwise. Your severance package includes a lifetime supply of Air Jordans, unlimited access to reruns of “Love and

Hip Hop”, a new 30 piece Tom Ford wardrobe, and the latest iPhone. Your medical coverage will be provided through ObamaCare. We want you to know that your termination is in no way a statement about the quality of your work with us. As such, we would like to acknowledge your outstanding contributions to the industry over the past decades.

you will continue this tradition of inspiring historical films with the May release of “Belle” and the History Channel’s forthcoming reboot of the groundbreaking 70’s televised series, “Roots”.

In music, we’d like to thank Kendrick Lamar’s thoughtprovoking body of work which has opened the door for Macklemore, a shining example of what intelligent rap looks like. In business, Jay Z’s partnership with Samsung was historical as the Korean mobile company paid the rapper a mere $5 million and his company Roc Nation, another $15 million, a bargain deal relative to their standard annual $4 billion marketing budget and $220 billion net worth.

In an attempt to capitalize on the recent trend in movies that focus on triumphs of the African-American experience, we have recently begun developing films with similar themes. Channing Tatum has just been cast as the lead in the Nat Turner Story while Scarlett Johansson is reported to have accepted the role of Harriet Tubman in a forthcoming biopic. Like Quentin Tarentino’s “Django Unchained”, both movies promise to offer the perfect balance between shoot-em-up style action and social commentary while boasting two smash-hit soundtracks featuring Eminem, Katy Perry, and Ke$ha.

In fashion, while Kanye West may be experiencing difficulties launching his own brand, his loyalty to European designers continues to add value to an already thriving industry that other entertainers like Migos seem to enjoy promoting for free.

Again, none of this could have been accomplished without your unwavering commitment and dedication to our mission. We trust that your transition will be smooth and wish you continued success with your new journey into Electronic Dance Music.

In cinema, “The Butler” and “12 Years a Slave” were Oscar-worthy gems, showcasing the strength and pride of a resilient people. We understand that this year,

Sincerely, The industry Disclaimer: Please not that the above article is purely satire. However, in all satire there is an element of truth.

Are New York’s black and hispanic children intellectually inferior? A question for the school chancellor and a wake up call for blacks and hispanics. After vigorous opposition, long delays, threats of noncompliance, and lawsuits, schools began releasing their disaggregated school report card data, as mandated by the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001. Opposition to the mandate stemmed from the fact that schools had to sort data based on students’ race/ethnicity and other demographic factors. Prior to NCLB and its mandate, school districts flouted such requirements. Consequently, without fear of penalty, districts used monies earmarked to improve schools of Black and disadvantaged children on their wealthier schools. In the process, they hid the failure of Black children in the district’s overall data. The NCLB mandate exacted penalty on schools that were persistently failing, and allowed stakeholders to use school data to see, and to respond to their schools’ performance. In NYC, various report card performance indicators were used to report on the City’s schools. Those performance indicators assessed whether students who were disaggregated, for example, by race/ethnicity, poverty level, and gender were succeeding. Disturbingly, the City’s specialized high school (SHS) data suggests NYC Black and Hispanic children were intellectually inferior. The SHS educated Gifted and Talented (G & T) NYC students were placed in an environment that catered

24 | www.gowhereitzat.com

to their unique teaching and learning needs. Students had to pass the New York State (NYS) Specialized High School Achievement Test (SHSAT) for access. Students wishing to attend the Arts and Performing Arts SHS had to pass portfolio assessments and auditions.

Why do Blacks and Hispanics have such an insignificant presence in the majority of the SHS? Were they intellectually inferior? Were the SHSAT, and the educators conducting the auditions and interviews acting as gate keepers?

Experts in the field of giftedness reported that G & T children were found in 5% of the general population— across all races/ethnicities. However, based on analysis of NYC SHS report card data (for the 2009-2013 school years), it appears Asians (43.37%) were NYC’s most G & T (brightest) students, while Blacks (11.34 %) and Hispanics (12.80 %) recorded the lowest levels amongst the ethnic groups.

While Blacks have long pointed to the SHS enrollment disparity, a competing group of New Yorkers advocate that Blacks and Hispanics lacked the intellectual capacity for the SHS. Evidence of such views can be seen in NY Daily News articles such as, “Don’t dumb down school, Bill” (10/12/13). Stakeholders with such views feared that admitting “unqualified” Blacks and Hispanics would tarnish the SHS scholarly reputation. In agreement, Mayor Michael Bloomberg had declared the SHSAT was fair and those with the capacity passed it. The NAACP filed a lawsuit in 2012, but it is time for Caribbean Americans, Africans, African Americans, Hispanics, and concerned New Yorkers to declare our children are not intellectually inferior and demand action from the school chancellor.

For example, on a school by school basis, Asians comprised 70.52% of Manhattan’s Stuyvesant SHS population compared to 1.46% of the Black population. In the Bronx, a predominantly Hispanic borough, Asians were 62.18% of Bronx High School of Science population compared to 3.52% of the Hispanic population. In Brooklyn, a predominantly Black borough, Asians were 59.36 % of Brooklyn Technical HS population compared Dr. Rupert Green to 11.05% of Blacks. However, in Staten Island, a predominantly White borough, Whites were 63.10 % of Statistics based on NYC Specialized High School Data for Staten Island Technical HS compared to 1.6% of blacks. period 2009-2013.

EconomicsCulture CARIBBEAN GOVERNMENTS PUSH REPARATION – BUT WHAT’S THE COST OF MENTAL SLAVERY? across the Caribbean and the black Diaspora, severe trauma. Trauma so deep, that the great Marcus Garvey, quoted by Bob Marley in song, called it “mental slavery.”

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Tues. Mar. 11, 2014: On Monday, March 10th 2014, behind closed doors in St. Vincent & the Grenadines, 15 CARICOM leaders reportedly adopted a ten-point plan prepared by a White British law firm that calls for reparations for slavery inflicted by former European colonizers. According to Martyn Day of the Leigh Day law firm, Caribbean leaders at the 25th Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM signed off on a plan calling for a formal apology for slavery, debt cancellation from former colonizers such as Britain, France, Spain and the Netherlands and reparation payments to repair the persisting “psychological trauma.” Psychological trauma is largely defined as “a type of damage to the psyche that occurs as a result of a severely distressing event.” “This can be a single experience, or an enduring or repeated event or events, that completely overwhelm the individual’s ability to cope or integrate the ideas and emotions involved with that experience,” according to psychologists. This type of trauma can be delayed by weeks, years or even decades, as the person struggles to cope with the immediate circumstances and can lead to serious long-term negative consequences that are often overlooked even by mental health professionals, experts say. Applying this definition to the reparation call and the ten-point plan prepared by CARICOM leaders’ means that we are admitting that slavery caused slaves, and are still causing descendants of slaves today

Mental slavery according to several black academians, cripples it’s victim, making them ineffective, self destructive, self hating, and dangerous. “Mental slavery may cause the victim to sell out family members, coworkers, and anyone else who possess a different mindset. A mental slave will not investigate nor research history or current events. They have a nasty habit of accepting and believing what is told to them, whether it’s true or not and are filled with envy, self hate, ignorance, intolerance, and maliciousness.” These exact characteristics persist in the Caribbean and the black Diaspora today. So how will the Day law firm measure this cost in order to seek reparation? What figure do you put on slavery that persists in generations who continue to tear each other down and cannot see the bigger picture? And why has no one consulted the black Caribbean Diaspora for their input on this? Day and the governments want European “aid” in strengthening the region’s public health, educational and cultural institutions such as museums and research centers; assistance to boost the region’s technological know-how since the Caribbean was denied participation in Europe’s industrialization and confined to producing and exporting raw materials such as sugar and the creation of a “repatriation program,” including legal and diplomatic assistance from European governments, to potentially resettle members of the Rastafarian spiritual movement in Africa. Day, who has waged a successful fight for an award compensation of about $21.5 million for surviving Kenyans who were tortured by

the British colonial government during the so-called Mau Mau rebellion of the 1950s and 1960s, called the plan a “fair set of demands on the governments whose countries grew rich at the expense of those regions whose human wealth was stolen from them.” No figure has been released on an upfront award to the Caribbean and the people of the Diaspora but the words “aid” and “assistance” in the call tells us don’t expect much more than hand outs even as the Caribbean Reparations Commission chairman, Hilary Beckles, a scholar who has written several books on the history of Caribbean slavery, said he was “very pleased” that the political leaders adopted the plan. Seems to me like slavery all over again. Are we as Caribbean leaders really content to continue to seek hand outs for damages that enslaved some four million West Africans between 1600 and 1870 and have ruined generations and continue to destroy us? And what about the damages caused to the people of the black Diaspora who are from the Caribbean but live outside the region? Do we get nothing at all? Maybe it is time CARICOM and Day pay a visit to the Caribbean Diaspora for their input on this and try again to find an exact per person figure that may help to ease the pain not just of slavery but help us to begin to love ourselves and each other as black people and unite. Only then will reparation matter; only then will it make sense as it will finally change the lives of generations to come. Only then will we truly achieve emancipation and freedom from mental slavery. Say What? Greeting dear readers. March, as you know is the month designated as Women’s History Month. Women have long been known as the “salt of the earth” as we selflessly give love, are teachers of standards and behavior for our children to emulate while enduring through it all. We must remember some amazing women who have left their legacy, Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks as they have gone before us, but some astounding women are making their mark. We are proud of Michelle Obama, the first black First Lady who has made her mark on the White House in an uplifting way. As we observe and celebrate this month, pay tribute to your grandmothers, your mothers, sisters, and daughters in your life as they are all amazing women. One Love sisters!

The music fraternity and the world is deeply sadden at the loss of a remarkable singer/songwriter whose music will forever be etched in our memory. R.I.P. Bunny Rugs! From death to life.

Preceding Woman’s Month was February’s a Black History & Reggae Month-- a time we reflect on our culture and heritage as Black people. Let’s try to make it an on-going practice as we teach our children about where they come from and the possibilities for their future.

Sadly, the start of February’s Reggae Month was greeted with the death of one of the industry’s most recognizable and dominant voice, William Clarke, aka Bunny Rugs, lead singer of the iconic Reggae band, Third World who would have been 66 years old on February 6th. It is reported that Bunny Rugs had been battling Leukemia for several years and after a recent bout in intensive care, he passed away on February 2 in an Orlando, Florida hospital. Brooklyn-born rapper, Lil’ Kim is about 5 months preggo. Apparently the identity of the father has been a mystery. However, there has been much speculation that prizefighter Floyd Mayweather Jr. was the frontrunner in the bets who has been romantically linked to Lil’ Kim although she lives in Alpine, NJ and he resides in Las Vegas (long distance romance…its possible). But hold your horses, it appears that the “real” daddy is stepping up and revealed himself on Twitter taking full creds for impregnating Lil’ “Queen Bee” Kim. He is a little-known New York-based recording artist named Mr. Papers who claimed he’s been dating Kim for some time, tweeting pics of the two together and calling her his “wife.” Papers contacted Confidenti@l to confirm the baby is his. “I’m very upset people are going around saying this is Floyd Mayweather’s child when it’s mine. I’m excited to be a dad and am going to marry Lil Kim.” Although Kim is

pushing 40, she’s quite happy about her pregnancy. “I’m so excited! I’m a few months along, I can’t wait to be a mom!” she reported told Us Weekly and also announced on stage at The Blonds Fashion Week after party. But mums the word on the “baby daddy” as sources say she plans to reveal the name of the father on a reality show she plans to start taping in March. I think Mr. Papers may have blown that whistle but both Lil’ Kim and Mayweather have declined to comment on the bun in the oven!

And more on new life, Michael Jordan and “new” wife, Yvette have given birth to twin girls as reported by EOnline.com. According to the website, Jordan’s manager told E! News: “Michael and Yvette Jordan are thrilled to announce that their identical twin daughters, Victoria and Ysabel, were born Sunday, February 9, 2014 in West Palm Beach, Florida. Yvette and the babies are doing well and the family is overjoyed at their arrival.” The 51 year old Jordan married the former Yvette Prieto, 34, in Palm Beach, Fla., last August. The basketball superstar had two sons, Jeffrey and Marcus, and a daughter, Jasmine, with his ex-wife Juanita. You may remember Michael and Juanita Jordan divorced in December 2006 (she received $168 million – the largest celebrity divorce settlement in history!). This time around Jordan learned his lesson from that marriage and has a prenuptial agreement in place before marrying Yvette. According to Forbes, Jordan, earned an estimated $80 million last year from corporate partners including Nike, Gatorade and Hanes. Love and romance for Valentine’s Day was the theme of the day for Irie Jam’s Ladies Ball at Amazura last month. It was indeed a night for the ladies who came out in droves and dressed to the hilt in their finest attire to swoon to some of Reggae’s best male singers. Rising ballad crooner, K’Coneil opened up the show with a flawless performance giving the New York ladies something to scream for. Up next was another rising star, Kranium, who for a new comer, was enthusiastically received. It’s been a while since Terry Linen performed in New York, but his performance rocked the house especially when he paid tribute to Garnett Silk. He sounded so much like Silk that if you closed your eyes you would have thought Garnett was in the house. I was extremely impressed

with Christopher Martin whose stage act has taken new heights. His strong and sexy voice continues to thrill his audience, and he has garnered a stage presence that is impeccable. Sanchez’s smooth and sweet voice had the ladies begging for more as he belted out all of the favorite hits with a trip down memory lane. He was great! I think if I knew what I-Octane was saying, I would have enjoyed him more, but nevertheless his fans all seem to know every word of his songs as they sang along with him. Tarrus Riley could do no wrong receiving a rousing reception while performing some of his smash hits as he closed out the show. Amazura was sold out and promoters even had to turn people away as it was filled to capacity. All in all it was an excellent show and worth every penny! Great job Irie Jam Media Group, looking forward to the next one. So good people, let’s continue to celebrate our heritage, our music, and love this month and always. CULTURE

Moor Understanding By ADIKA BUTLER

A historical key to understanding in a modern Western society that teaches these subjects will look like a “Mystery School” to you. Only when people of African descent reintroduced their history and culture to the world over the last 100 years or so has the Western world had a window into the minds of ancient Nile Valley people. While authors Gerald Massey, R.A. Schwaller de Lubicz, Martin Bernal and a few others have made some valuable contributions, they are the exceptions, and not the rule. All of the advancements that the modern Western world has made came as a result of studying at the foot of the Moors during what I call the “Dark Matter” Ages.

Some may question why I have placed such an emphasis on Moorish history and culture in my Mind Glow Media blog posts. One of the biggest reasons is that we currently live in a world that is dominated by Western culture. However the Moors of antiquity, are in many respects, the architects of modern Western civilization as we know it today. They introduced institutions of higher learning, what we now call classical music, and laid the foundation for many of the metropolitan amenities that we take for granted in everyday city life. All of the artistic and scientific achievements made during the European renaissance and Enlightenment period are merely the effect of cultural advancements that the Moors set in motion while occupying the countries of Europe during the Middle Ages. Those movements set the groundwork for Western civilization as we know it today. Some will be quick to say that Western civilization derived much of its knowledge from the people of the Nile Valley. Truth be told, most Europeans have never really understood Nile Valley culture to the extent that they could make any practical use of its wisdom. Of course, this hasn’t stopped many European authors from writing tons of speculative books about ancient Kemetic (Egyptian) “Mystery Schools.” Kemet didn’t have any “Mystery Schools.” It had universities that taught the integrated science of Ma’atematics, which is the art and science of life as they are expressed in the principles of Ma’at. When you don’t have an inclination towards art, or an understanding of science, then any school 34 | www.gowhereitzat.com

When we study the architects of modern Western civilization—specifically, their mistakes and accomplishments—it gives those who have been marginalized by today’s Western societies an opportunity to carve out a future for themselves so that they can have a say in shaping the future of Western civilization as they see fit. Studying world history will not guarantee that you will drive a Bugatti and live in a mansion and wear the finest designer clothes. However it can give you a perspective on life and the world at large that can edify you. It can foster a better understanding of how to effectively maneuver through the world to attain those things if having those things are your main goals. There is nothing wrong with being materially wealthy. If you are a genuine seeker of spiritual wisdom and understanding, your material wealth can position you to have personal experiences that can help those things to become a reality. An adult with responsibilities who is worried about food, clothing, and shelter doesn’t have time to ponder the mysteries of the universe. And if you loose your passion for attaining higher consciousness after you have a few million dollars in your savings account, then you were never sincere in your quest in the first place. You were no different than a crack head looking for a mental escape from the harsh spectacle of your former life. A wise person doesn’t chase money for its own sake, but they won’t run from money either. Although I never hear it discussed, philanthropy is a hallmark of Moorish culture. Cosmic intelligence conveys its intent through many different channels, including people who produce and create things that inspire others to explore their own potential as creators. Most people just take from others who produce by the sweat of their brow. True creators are in the minority, but scarcity creates value.

When you invest in people who create, you invest in higher cosmic intelligence. As a benefactor, you then become an asset to higher intelligence yourself. Philanthropy is a Moorish art in which both the giver and the receiver are equal beneficiaries. People who own wealth generators, yet choose not to invest in builders, are sentencing humanity to “capital” punishment. The architects will build their monuments regardless by any means necessary. If you know that your forefathers are the architects of Western civilization, and you have a keen understanding of how it works in the present day, what is there—besides a total lack of ambition and intelligence—to stop you from having a say in the future direction of the civilization? There is nothing. This is why there has been a contingent of men and women acting out of self-preservation, who don’t want to see that happen. This is not a conspiracy. It’s a matter-of-fact reality for those who choose to see the obvious. We’re all still learning to enhance our ability to do just that. Moorish contributions to Western civilization are not taught to youth who attend social studies classes in Western countries. Not even in Europe, from what I have been told. One of my readers is a European woman who was born and raised in Germany. She told me that in her years of schooling she was not taught anything about the Moors. What she eventually learned came from her independent research into the impact they had on her native homeland during the Middle Ages. Even she is convinced that Moorish history is ignored in school because the white ruling elite are afraid of the implications. It would be an open admission that Black people are primarily responsible for the Moor redeeming aspects of modern Western civilization as we know it today. I recommend inquisitive readers who are not familiar with the Moors read The Golden Age of the Moor, which is a collection of scholarly essays edited by Guyanese Rutgers University professor Ivan Van Sertima (January 26, 1935 – May 25, 2009). It is probably the book to start you off. However, when you read any book always keep in mind that there is no one book that will tell you all that you may want to know concerning an entire subject of study. This knowledge can only be obtained from exploring a variety of source material and then looking within yourself to garner deeper insights in relation to what you’ve learned.

Melanin is depicted as an organizational an effective absorber of light; the pigment is “trigger” capable of using established properties able to dissipate more than 99.9% of absorbed UV radiation. In even the most light-skinned people, the body’s melanocytes respond to sun exposure by producing more melanin, which creates the effect known as tanning. However, there is a limit to the degree of protection that melanin can provide, and it’s significantly higher in people with naturally darker skin. Targets Free Radicals/Destroys Free Radicals Free radicals have been implicated as the cause of widespread damage to human cells. In an article written for The Sun and Your Skin website, Diana Clarke, the website’s founder, writes about melanin’s role in scavenging free radicals, preventing the skin damage they can cause.

Causes Younger-Looking Skin

In humans, melanin is the primary determinant of skin and hair color. However, few people know that melanin is found in almost every organ of the body and is necessary for the brain and nerves to operate, the eyes to see, and the cells to reproduce.

Exposure to the sun has the potential to cause premature aging of the skin. Darkly pigmented people tend to exhibit less signs of aging. Dermatologist Susan C. Taylor, author of “Brown Skin,” points out that Blacks and other people of color generally look younger than their lighter-skinned peers because of the higher levels of melanin in their skin. The increased melanin protects those who have it from shortterm damage from the sun, as well as the longterm signs of aging, such as age spots, deep
