PUBLISHER’S VIBE
Clive Williams, CEO/ Publisher _________________________ My previous profession gave me a privilege that very few are allowed, it gave me an intimate insight in the human psyche, the ego, vicissitudes and complexities of human behavior which has placed me in a rather awkward position – one in which I have to make a conscious effort, to not psycho-analyze the intention of everyone I meet. I must admit however that my human frailty tempts me to indulge in random exercises of analysis when I meet someone with an outsized ego or so self-absorbed that they cause great discomfort for others. I met one such person recently and realized an interesting paradox, an objective analysis made me aware that this man is potentially a good person and has the ability to be great, except for the absence of what I describe as “success markers.” Success markers are really very fundamental, good habits which over time manifest as character and overall, form the basis for the stability and strength of your character. So this young man’s ambition, drive and enthusiasm for success on the one hand is admirable and defines him as a good person, but on the other hand he possesses what I call “the Donald Trump Syndrome,” egotistical, selfabsorbed, listens to no other opinion but his, alienates others, leads by coercion, lacks genuine respect for others, creates his own rules and is dismissive of all others who are not sycophants.” I am really not finished analyzing Trump, but it would take volumes more, and since this article is not about him, a partial analysis is sufficient for my purpose. The unfortunate consequences of the buffoonery of the Trump character is that he is portrayed as a model of success for those who equate wealth and pomposity with real success and, young people lacking the sophistication
WHAT IS IT THAT MAKES GOOD PEOPLE GREAT?
and experience, buy into the hype, (hyperbole). In my writing I will persistently use Trump as a metaphor for a “bully boss,” and one of the most obnoxious of the bad actors in the world of business. Sadly enough, our society has promoted greed, selfishness and avarice by elevating its practitioners to celebrity status and icons of success, negating completely the real meaning and essence of success and greatness.
dad taught me decades ago: Respect, Dignity, Discipline, Honesty, Loyalty, Hard Work, Perseverance, Courage and Giving. Nothing has happened to change those principles, they are timeless. If I ever find Aladdin’s lamp, one of my first wishes would be to infuse all the basically good people I know with a Mega Dose of those principles. They are the Success Markers that move us from good to GREAT. Time and experience have taught me that there is a certain mediocrity about being, just good, why not be great? Just to ensure the perspective of our discussion, I feel compelled to prove why we should strive for being GREAT. I attended high school with some of the most academically brilliant and talented boys you could find anywhere in the world, yet too many sputtered and failed in the game of life, they did so because they fell victim to any number of personal failures due to (The Failure Markers), arrogance, disrespect, dishonesty, disloyalty, indiscipline, laziness, fear, selfishness and lack of endurance. No matter how brilliant you are at the very beginning, that brilliance sputters out pretty quickly if the Success Markers are not developed.
Success is not a destination – it’s a journey of “overcoming,” overcoming obstacles and adversities, which breeds a sense of achievement that leads to both personal success and public success; even then the process is incomplete; the key to being an authentic person, A GREAT PERSON is- HOW, you handle that SUCCESS. Have you ever been in a room with one of those self-absorbed, “I am so smart and I just bought a house and a Mercedes” types - whose only gift is to talk about self? Many people immediately head for the exits, sadly wondering how such an otherwise good person can be so shallow, insensitive and boastful. On the other hand, isn’t it refreshing when you meet someone, obviously of substance, who displays empathy, humility and respect for the feelings of others? You go away thinking, “I just met a The transition from good to great is a process really GREAT person,” that experience is both that begins with an AWARENESS of WHO we refreshing and inspiring. really are, and - WHERE we are in the game of life; this requires an honest assessment by way What is it then that makes good people great? of retrospection, introspection and meditation. ROMANCE & RELATIONSHIPS
The Formula Trailblazing author dishes practical advice on love and relationships
book is a manual designed to get couples, as well as single men and women, on the fast track to mutual satisfaction. Very recently Cutno spoke to WhereItzAt about her book project. The title of your book is Man Leads. For the sake of clarity among our many readers, what is a man?
It can be argued that it is not a lack of love, but an abundance of misunderstanding that causes many marriages in the United States to fail. While an estimated $72 billion a year is spent of weddings in the U.S. annually, an increasing number of marriages are ending in divorce. According to the University of Virginia’s State of Our Unions study for 2012, about half of all marriages in the United States result in divorce. Since the 1970s the percentages of men and women who feel like they are in fulfilling marriages have been steadily in decline. Ro Élori Cutno, the author of the book, Man Leads, has been on a crusade to combat the entropic forces of misery that cause marriages to fall apart. Cutno, who describes herself as a feminist, conducted a two-year long study in which she traveled the world with a research team interviewing happily married couples of various racial and ethnic backgrounds. Her goal was to identify the unifying threads that allowed these marriages to thrive. Her conclusion was that marriages succeed when level-headed, responsible men with resources are the unattested leaders of the family and its affairs, while women play the role of nurturers and supporters. Cutno—who also has a channel on YouTube— argues that in the United States, a lot of men have become effeminized while several women, unbeknownst to themselves, are masculine in their psychological orientation. The confusion of gender roles, she says, is an unappetizing recipe for disaster for many Americans today. Cutno’s 10 | JOIN OUR COMMUNITY @ WIAmagazine.com
A man is a male who is unapologetically a protector and a provider. He leads his family without any apologies. Many people today believe that leading a family is a mutually shared responsibility between a husband and wife, and the whole idea of the man as the unquestioned leader of a household is an outmoded idea. Why do you propose otherwise in your book? If a man is not allowed to lead, then the woman takes on the leadership role simply because one person must take it. Contrary to what we have been taught, two people cannot drive a car with four hands on the steering wheel. Contrary to popular opinion, two people cannot lead a dance that is required to have harmony. When we believe that there should not be any leader, then the woman becomes the leader of the household. Every household will have a leader whether we want to admit it or not. If a man is not in a position to be a leader, and his woman is in masculine energy, she must dominate him in order to lead. This decreases the man’s testosterone levels, which diminishes his mental acuity and skills to lead, because he will be out of practice. If a man does not already have these things in place he needs to remove himself in order to improve his skill and position himself within another family, of some form, either emotionally or physically. What cultural changes took place within American society over the last century or more to make your stance so foreign to many American families?
Well, for Black Americans, the first thing was slavery. Then at the start of World War 2 the campaign started to get women into the workforce. That continued on, and increased, during the feminist movement. Generations after that American women are just masculine in their energy and have lost their natural feminine nurturing. This applies to both white American women and Black American women. Does being anatomically male automatically qualify one to be the leader of a household? No. A male is not a man until he has reached certain goals in which he has proven himself to be able to protect and provide for a woman. All males mature at different ages, but no male is mature under 25 years of age. Most men do not mature until the age of 40. Some will mature by the age of 35. However some males will never mature into men at all. What practical solutions to relationship problems will men and women walk away with after reading your book? Readers will learn the five different love languages. There are things that men and women do to express love. There are things that they require to feel loved. What many people don’t realize is that men and women do not communicate love in the same way, nor do they receive love in the same way. This is a practical manual for men and women. I call it a book, but I use that term lightly. It is a manual that is very easy to read and apply to your everyday life. Men are finally getting what they want from a relationship book. You can purchase Ro Élori Cutno’s book at www. manleads.com or on Amazon.com. By Adika Butler

When? Every morning I read the Jamaica Observer to see what’s going on in my beloved Jamrock, and while there are positive and encouraging things happening, I am always jolted by some random bad news. The bad news seems to be getting worse every time I open the paper. Just yesterday, 11-04-2014, I read of gunmen kicking in a family’s door and summarily executing three inhabitants. SELF HELP/INSPIRATION 7 Steps with…
Step 2: Stop feeling sorry for yourself.
WIA Magazine’s Creative Director & VP of Operations, Raymond Deane
No matter how bad your current situation is, no matter how broke you are, how fat you are, how lonely you are, how unsatisfied you are with your job or in your relationship, you MUST not feel sorry for yourself. Why? Any problems that you have can be fixed. Every second that passes by is another chance to turn your life around. Never forget that.
“What’s up New York. I want to thank you for taking the time to pick up the latest issue of WIA Magazine. In every issue I share advice that will help YOU put “The Pieces of the Puzzle” together in YOUR life. We all have goals and dreams in life and my goal is to help YOU overcome anything holding you back from living the life YOU truly want to live.” The following article will help you…
Discover Your Hidden Gifts and Find Your True Calling
let their opinions stop you from being who you were meant to be. Step 6: Create new experiences by trying new things
Why are many of your talents hidden? That’s because you haven’t discovered them yet. Why haven’t you discovered them? That’s because you haven’t tried everything. I’ll give you an example to illustrate my point. In the last issue of WIA Step 3: Face Your Fears magazine, we featured a young man by the name of Patrick Eugene who worked in the banking There is a great quote that states “Success industry. Two years ago, he decided to try is where the FEAR is”. So, that means if you something new, he decided to try painting. Long conquer your fears, you just might find success story short, if you see his artwork you would there waiting for you. Have you ever let your think he has been painting his whole life. He fears hold you back from doing what you really tried something new and he discovered a hidden want? By facing your fears you will open up new talent. So, use that example as motivation to try opportunities that will take you one step closer new things because you will never know what to discover your true calling in life. you might be great at and what you’ll love until Step 4: Answer all the following questions. you have tried it. Write your answers down on paper. Step 7: Start a new hobby or new career. What are you passionate about? What makes you happy? What do you really love to do? What characteristics define your personality? Be honest with your answers and be VERY specific. For example, maybe you love singing, so be specific, what kind of songs do you love to sing? Maybe you love helping others, well, what kind of help do you like to give? Maybe you like giving advice or you like volunteering your time. Or maybe you love being the center of attention and gossiping. Writing down everything about yourself will help you discover your true calling.
Step 1: Feel grateful for your life.
Step 5: Don’t define who you are by your profession or what other people think of you.
If you want to experience the joy of discovering your true calling, then you must start by feeling grateful for your life. Why? Because your life is a gift from God and It’s the best gift you will ever receive. It’s better than all the Christmas gifts you ever got combined! One of the best things about this amazing gift called “life” is that you are in control of it. You can be anything you want to be and you can accomplish anything you want.
There are many parts of you, that make you who you are. Your profession is not who you are and it never will be. You are not a title. You are not a label. You are endless possibilities. There are many paths that you can take your life on. Finding your true calling requires an open mind and the ability to accept the fact that you have the power to be anything you choose to be. There are many people in your life that can’t see your potential because they “know” you. Don’t
Take your list from step 4 and look for a hobby or career that satisfies at least two answers from each question. For example, let’s say you wrote down that you love playing basketball, you love watching basketball, you love giving advice and helping kids by volunteering. If you combine them all into a hobby or profession, coaching a children’s basketball team would bring you much joy. Your true calling can be discovered by following a path that satisfies your personality, your deepest passions and desires all in one.

Matt, what do you appreciate about your wife? Outside of Cassandra being my wife and the love of my life, I appreciate her for what she does for the youth in our community. She created a non-profit organization called L.Y.T.E. that provides organized sports activities and mentoring programs for teenagers and young adults in Queens. She spends a lot of her free time helping teens and keeping them out of trouble. In addition to that, she is a Youth Choir Director at her church. She loves working with kids and seeing them turn into positive young adults. The smile on her face is ear to ear when she comes home from an event and I appreciate and applaud her effort to better the youth and the community we live in. Cherries
Apple Cider Vinegar Do you suffer from heartburn regularly? Then mix one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink it before a meal or drink it gradually after a meal to avoid acid formation in the stomach. Apple cider vinegar helps the body to better metabolize fat and protein, which can contribute to the heartburn. If relief doesn’t come, seek medical help.
Cherries are great for bone pain arthritis, and chronic headache. You can credit the cherries for their anti-inflammatory and pain killing effects. The benefits of cherries are the result of it’s antioxidant properties called Proanthocyanidins, very powerful antioxidants that remove harmful free oxygen radicals from the cells. This powerful antioxidant eliminates enzymes that cause tissue inflammation and pain. Chili Peppers Chili is a member of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), very popular in Mexican, Spanish and Portuguese dishes, capsicum it’s main ingredient is highly effective for joint pain and migraines.
Blueberries Blueberries are one of the best natural medicines for prevention and treatment of infections in the urinary tract. Blueberries are very rich in tannin. Tannin is a natural organic compound that effectively kills bacteria that contributes to inflammation of the urethra.
Cloves Toothache and pain in the gums can be immediately treated with cloves. The best way to use cloves for a toothache is to gently chew on it with the unaffected teeth, that action releases an enzyme called eugenol which combines with the saliva creating a powerful pain reducing effect. For those who find chewing unpalatable, cloves can be used to prepare an equally effective tea.
Quick Fit Tips
Trinidadian Fitness & Intense Boot Camp instructor Cindy Yearwood from Queens, NY shares some quick workout tips to help you stay fit and focused.
What can a person do to stay motivated to reach their fitness goals? Rome wasn’t built in a day! Hard work does pay off, but you have to work. Create a workout routine for yourself that includes cardio, strength training and proper nutrition. I always recommend eating prior to any workout. Think of it as a car, it won’t drive without fuel. Food is fuel and gives you energy to burn. After your workout, do extensive stretching. You must stretch after a workout to prevent cramping and sore muscles. You can also go into the sauna too. It is a great way to keep you relaxed! The better you feel after your workout increases your enthusiasm to keep on going. So remember this quick fitness tip, never give up, keep your eyes on the prize and you will reach your fitness goals! My favorite Christmas movie of all time is Nori Rane says…. Brian Sanchez says... My favorite Christmas movie of all time is “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” because I just love the whole storyline of the movie. It’s cool to see what happened to the Grinch during his back story. I love how they explain how he became known as The Grinch in his hometown. My favorite scene is when he eats glass and then hears his own echo that repeats him until he says “I’m stupid” and then the echo says “You’re stupid”. I just couldn’t stop laughing!
My favorite Christmas movie of all time is “Coming to America” hands down! I know it’s not about Christmas per say, but it has a holiday season feel throughout. I really enjoyed the opening scenes where Eddie Murphy who played Prince Akeem wanted to be with a real “Sistah”, a woman who thinks for herself with a great heart and wants him for him. He was looking for a Queen so he naturally went to the borough “Queens” in New York to find one. I loved how we as a people can be portrayed as royalty, that’s important to me. I crack up every time I watch it with my family around this time of year. It gives me that feeling of warmth while we laugh, eat and share. I wanna feel that again and again. I wish all families everywhere happy holidays!

Valarie, tell us what you appreciate about Grandma Wong I appreciate my Grandma because she made it her mission to ensure I know about both sides of my cultural background: Jamaican and Chinese. From an early age she took away my fork and gave me chopsticks to eat with. We flew to China together and she showed me where my families’ roots were derived. Dinner at Grandma Wong’s is always done traditionally with much respect for the Chinese culture. But, she didn’t stop there. My Grandma also made sure I knew my Jamaican roots. We also travel there often. Actually, my Grandma and Grandfather owned a Jamaican Restaurant for many years. There she learned how to make traditional Jamaican cuisine. To this day, she is always teaching me how to make all kinds of Jamaican dishes. My Grandma is awesome because she teaches me through food. As we cook, whether it’s Jamaican or Chinese, she teaches me about the cultures, as well as who I am. Valarie, what would you like to tell your Grandma Grandma, I love you! Etana said that she thought about Angelou the day before she died and made the deceased poet’s namesake her album title because it was exemplified her struggles up until this point in her life. The project has her ascending into unfamiliar territory.
Another standout song on the album is the Richest Girl where Etana bears her soulfulness, confessing her undying love, promising to love even without her riches. This song adds to the collection of soulful love songs that the beautiful island of Jamaica is known for.
For instance, when Etana first decided she wanted to pursue music she choose not to go into dancehall because she didn’t like the negative outlook many dancehall artists bring to the table when they feed their fans. Her views on the matter have changed, and she feels women should be able to choose who they want to be. This suggests that she has grown though her career and music.
This album is a true work of art and a great piece for authentic reggae collections. Etana’s melodic voice traverses life and connects with the soul. It is the embodiment of life itself. When writing her music she says she draws inspiration from every day occurrences, so the music is real whether it is about love spirituality or harsh realities. “FOR GREAT HEALTH AND VITALITY” it’s vital to our health that we protect our immune systems at all times -Bro Imandi It’s that time of year again, when the limits of our physical endurance is tested by the flu, fevers, chills, allergies, congestion and - depression, people from tropical climates are particularly affected by seasonal affective disorder, ( SAD) that funky mood which makes you feel like you’ve lost your best friend. Why? Because of reduced sunlight, lower temperatures and very often unfavorable weather to which most Caribbean folks are unaccustomed. Kingdom Come Affectionately known as the “Father of Africa,” Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie was an iconic leader who found himself at the center of some of the 20th century’s most memorable events. The man that Time Magazine touted as its “Man of the Year” in 1936 was a prominent figure during the bloody saga that was World War 2, and was very influential in the African struggle for independence from European colonial powers in the decades that followed. However, it often seems that Selassie’s life is most studied within the context of the Rastafarian faith. Just when it appeared that the emperor’s legacy and cultural relevance had been examined from every possible angle, author Omar Tobijah presents the second edition of his first book, Seventy Years Accomplished. The text filters much of Selassie’s stately wisdom through contemporary social issues and modern events impacting on people’s lives today. Tobijah recently spoke to WhereItzAt about his new project. There are many books that explore the legacy that Emperor Haile Selassie has left behind. What makes your book different from the rest? My book, Seventy Years Accomplished, offers an explanation on the Emperor which satisfies the inquiries by scholars and the faithful. The first thought that springs to mind whenever the name Haile Selassie I is mentioned is the Rastafari movement. As a result the literature on His Majesty is categorized into competing ideals between those who proclaim his divinity and those who deny him. I analyzed both positions objectively and decided that we should not be divided into hostile camps because there are valid points being made on each side. But most people will not consider another person’s point of view because they feel threatened by this knowledge which indicates a false belief on their part that they are unwilling to correct. Under such circumstances there will never be any progress and we would have failed in our responsibility to advance the generation. The various religions and cultures have much 32 | JOIN OUR COMMUNITY @ WIAmagazine.com
New book explores Haile Selassie’s relevance for a new generation
more in common than they have differences, but we have become polarized into competing factions that would work much better if we cooperated and learned from each other. The devious schemes of divide and rule have worked well in the past to subjugate nations, but now is the time to learn from history so that we do not continue to make the same mistakes. What was the greatest challenge that you faced in writing your book? The greatest challenge that anyone will encounter is the battle for your soul. In taking on the grand ideal of correcting the church and state, it is essential to first correct yourself because a messenger who thinks they are separate from their message is not worthy to deliver their edicts. I had to meditate upon these matters very seriously because I did not want to make the same errors of previous institutions that compromised the gospel to suite their lifestyle. The doctrine is supposed to be greater than us because we are seeking the higher power and if God had the same ways of man then there would be no reason to follow God. This quest to better yourself is a lifelong mission and as long as we are making strides in the right direction then we are doing what we have to do because change occurs a little bit at a time. God does not call the qualified, he qualifies those who are called. By understanding these tenants I was able to overcome my insecurities of writing the book and follow that inner voice inside of me that commanded me to complete this publication. Historically, reggae music played an instrumental role in spreading the teachings of Rastafari. In this time, do you think that art, specifically music, should be used to galvanize the believers in their faith? If so, how should the music be approached? It was Mortimer Planno’s idea that reggae should be used as the chief medium to spread the message of Rastafari. As a result it is common to think of the followers of Haile Selassie to be musicians who smoke marijuana and grow dreadlocks. In this regard the people are following Bob Marley
and not the Emperor because His Majesty did not live or decree this type of lifestyle. If the music and culture continues to take away from the prime objective of emulating Haile Selassie I then these customs must either be corrected or discarded. It is more important and impactful to seek to affect policy and gain political power than it is to smoke weed and sing songs. Music can be used to spread the message but it would be better if we were focused upon living according to the pattern that Emperor Haile Selassie I characterized. When you look at the world today, there are many reasons to give up hope and lose faith in humanity. How do you get beyond this to see the brighter side of things? I am confident in the victory of good over evil because the wisdom in truth is stronger than the deceit of a lie. Those whose power and hegemony is threatened by the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie I want to erase his legacy and downplay his impact in the world. But it becomes quite obvious to anyone who takes the time to research these events that His Majesty was a tremendously important and wise leader. By: Adika Butler

When?
In an article in the Gleaner from July 11, 2014, it is said that less than half of the serious crimes committed ever gets solved. Out of 508 murders committed, only 229, were solved. (Jamaica Gleaner). Sobering, huh? When is the government going to take its responsibility seriously? Arguably the most sacred government duty is to protect its citizens from harm. The current government and the previous one have failed in that sacred duty. I, and if I can speak for others, am tired of the government’s statements. We must demand that they - DO SOMETHING!!! TALK IS CHEAP!!! There’s an old adage that says, “don’t tell me how good you are, show me.” We have seen nothing but we’ve heard a lot! STOP TALKING, START DOING!!! When are YOU going to mount a concerted effort to rid the country of such brutal crimes? When will you take on this badly needed and overdue initiative? WHEN? I know YOU know where these criminals are. Find them. Bring them to justice and convict them. When YOU went into the garrison to find Dudus, why did YOU stop there? Surely Tivoli isn’t the only Garrison in Jamaica. When are YOU going to really make an effort to stamp out criminality? When? I, along with countless thousands in the diaspora, would love to come home and enjoy the tropical splendor of my beloved Jamrock, but how can I? How can we? Why would I leave a relative safe environment and return to a place where I would never truly be safe. To add another dimension, why would I return to a place where I would have to live behind bars, in a virtual prison? Shouldn’t the criminals be the ones living behind bars? By: Miles B. Do you have any advice for our readers who are dealing with feelings of depression, sadness, or loneliness during this holiday season? Be honest about your feelings of sadness or loneliness with someone you trust. Talking about your thoughts and feelings with a supportive person can make you feel better. It can be very healing, in and of itself, to voice your worries or talk about something that’s weighing on your mind. And it feels good to be listened to—to know that someone else cares about you and wants to help. Reach out to loved ones; seek support from others such as support groups. The biggest advantage of a support group is in helping a client to realize that he or she is not alone-that there are other people who are going through similar feelings. In addition to being a celebrity therapist, an author, and running your own private practice “Life Rebuilding”, you are also a wife and mother. Please tell our readers how you are able to balance work and family life? What are some tips you may have for busy working moms? I seek the “calm” in the following ways: morning exercise, scripture study, meditation, and prayer; putting foods in my body that give me energy; and getting to bed in time to get a good night’s sleep
(when my children will let me!). Perhaps the best day-to-day stress manager in my life is spending time with my family and friends. Additionally, I enjoy cooking, leisure reading, singing and listening to music. Many times we are so busy taking care of others that we neglect ourselves. Keep practicing self-care; participate in activities that you truly enjoy. I am a big proponent in the old adage that you cannot give to others what you do not have for yourself. Moreover, one of the best gifts that you can give to your loved ones is self-care. Tell us about your new book “Naked and Transparent: Six Vital Tools for Knowing Yourself and Attracting Healthy Relationships”? The purpose of writing this book is to help readers find purpose in their pain by coming to know themselves at their core. Once you are self-aware, you become relationship conscious. We all bring our fears, vulnerabilities, emotional wounds, and issues from our past relationships to our new relationships. Until these issues are dealt with, they will infect every aspect of a person’s life. We cannot change what we are not aware of. Selfawareness allows us to pose the following question to ourselves: “Who am I attracting and why am I attracting this kind of person?” What words of encouragement and hope do you have for our readers who may have lost their way or are feeling discouraged in life? I believe that no matter what happens in life, we are all powerful, and can accomplish anything through self-love and the right mindset. We can heal anything in our lives through the power of self –love and self-awareness, and that true empowerment comes from looking within and embracing the real you.
