Who benefits from the money you spend?

ery recently I decided to resurrect a practice I had observed as a young boy while working in my mother’s grocery store, where, some customers would request that their change remain in the register to ensure the success of the business. So as often as I can, I do the very same in the stores that I shop. Now mind you, this is not intended as a tip, this is a separate transaction – a gesture of good luck to the business owner with the hope that my small change along with others will ensure the growth of that business. Am I too old? I get the feeling as I write this, that what I am talking about is really ancient history; does anyone else recall this practice? If you do email me at wiaeditors@gmail.com and let me know that, I am neither alone, or way too old. You see, the grocery store or general store was the social and cultural hub in small and large communities, in rural and urban neighborhoods, on my island of Jamaica. I had the feeling that the success of the community was inextricably linked to the success of that grocery or general store. Having spent some time in rural and suburban areas of the United States and read its history, I have discovered that the similarities are amazingly striking. Where, or What do I refer to as a community? Bear in mind that on scale, American communities are much larger and usually more diverse than those in the Caribbean, but despite that diversity, many communities distinguish themselves by their 6 | PULSE OF THE CARIBBEAN PEOPLE
ethnic, numerical and economic dominance in a geographical space, clearly defined by a zip code(s). Examples of this – the Jewish Community in Crown Heights and Williamsburg, Italian Communities of Bensonhurst/Little Italy (Brooklyn), Little Italy – Mulberry Street, Manhattan and Chinese Communities/China Town in Manhattan as well as Flushing , Queens. It is in this context that I speak of community. Each of these communities have a dominant ethnic group, developed ethos, a cultural, religious and economic way of life and style that distinguishes them from other communities. The overarching reality in all these cultural/religious/ economic dynamics is that – these residents support the businesses in their localities, in short the money stays in their respective communities, revolves there, and is most often, re-invested there.
Dept.) I will therefore not perpetuate that myth, but I believe its safe to say that if that statistic were true, it has so far failed to deter our penchant for irresponsible and careless spending. How seriously and how emphatically are our religious and political leaders treating the annual $ 1.1 trillion of consumption by Black Americans? Are they being “penny wise and pound foolish”? Maybe they are – assuming they have forgotten or don’t know the real facts, I will remind them. Black Americans, 43 Million of them, spend $1.1 Trillion annually, if only 7 - 10% of that was spent in black communities, approximately 1 million new jobs could be created. In reality only about 3% makes it back to the Black community. Shouldn’t you be constantly asking who is benefitting from the hard earned dollars you’re spending?
So, what about Black communities in East Flatbush, I am making the case that when Black Americans, Brooklyn – Harlem, New York, South East Queens Caribbean’s and Africans begin to spend just 10% and many others across the country? Who benefits of their disposable incomes with their respective from the hard earned money you spend? That has communities, we can begin the difficult but necessary been the concern of many of our more thoughtful climb back to self-respect and self-sufficiency. Start leaders who have attempted to convince us to rein by leaving that pocket change in the register and in our penchant for extreme consumption. Yet, ALWAYS remember to TIP your server too many, particularly our political leaders, have as well. done little or nothing to encourage and stimulate the development of Black communities and Black business. Case in point, I have for years, either on radio and in news print given air time or ink to aspiring political leaders, yet, once they are elected to office, their advertising dollars go elsewhere. I was told by a very savvy political source, that funding and support goes to those who contribute the most money, as cynical as that is, it’s the truth Then there is a very popular prevailing mythology that every dollar earned in the Black community migrates to another within six hours, I have ‘Cause that’s WhereItzAt! researched this seeming phenomenon, but can find no credible scientific research to support its veracity. PERSONAL EMPOWERMENT
5Survival Tools for Entrepreneurs By Stacey Berry
F
or entrepreneurs to be successful, it requires lots of hard work, dedication and sacrifice. You have to practice your craft, implement your vision and refuse to give up. There is no short cut, secret sauce or magic formula to becoming successful in business. For those of us who are addicted to working hard, when you are an entrepreneur, it is very easy to get so consumed by “work, work, work, work,” that we fail to stop and smell the roses. Upon some selfreflection, I realized that your desire to be successful in business should not cost your health, peace or happiness. I had to take some time and assess why I wanted to be a successful entrepreneur and ensure that my motives or goals were in alignment with my desire to be healthy and happy. The desire to be successful is not a virtue it is actually addictive. There is no end date for achieving success. Once you experience it you will want more and more success. You can safeguard your overall well-being and find balance by applying these 5 Survival Tools for Entrepreneurs. These tools will help you develop healthy work habits, live a rich and fulfilling life as you climb the ladder to success. (1) Practice work life balance: Know your limit and work within it. Avoid working so hard that your health and happiness pays the price. As an entrepreneur, you are your own boss and have the power to determine how much work you will or will not do. Know when to say no or not now. Avoid saying yes to every opportunity. You can become so busy with work that you will have no time for yourself. Create a consistent work schedule. Determine when and how long you will work. Do not allow your clients or customers to dictate your
work hours. Be moderately accommodating but set clear hours of operation. Stay active. There are so many fun and cost effective ways to keep your body moving. According to the Centre for Disease some of the benefits for exercise include reducing your risk of cardiovascular disease, strengthens your bones and muscles, improves your mental health and lowers your risk of developing type 2 diabetes . With all these benefits for exercise, make a commitment to be active. Start with walking 20 to 30 minutes a day. Stretch before you go to bed, join a dance class, play your favorite sport or take swimming classes. Block a time for lunch and breaks. It is so easy to get so consumed by work you forget to eat. I have been down that road and it is not a healthy habit. Practice healthy and nutritious eating. At the end of this article is a list of resources with healthy eating tips and nutritious recipes. Take time to smell the roses. Spend time with friends or family. Learn to enjoy your own company and make time just to pamper yourself. Work is never ending. There is always more work to be done. Practicing work-life balance will help you to avoid burn out and allow the best of you to shine through your business. (2) Create a strong support system: Your support system is your network of reliable, caring and trustworthy people. This could include friends, advisors or relatives. These are the people that cheer you on, support your business, give you sound advice and have your best interests at heart. They strengthen you when you are weak, motivate you when you feel like giving up on your business, and ensure you remain on the path of success. You can count on the people in your support system to be by your side when you need them most. It is common for entrepreneurs to face disappointments, unstable income, no real financial security and rejection. Your support system will help you to build resilience and overcome hardships. Always remember people are your greatest assets. As you climb the ladder of success make sure to build some solid relationships along the way. (3) Surround yourself with experts: Depending on the nature of your business, you will need a team
8 | PULSE OF THE CARIBBEAN PEOPLE
of experts such as an accountant, graphic designer, consultant, bookkeeper, web designer and lawyer. The most effective way to find experts is to ask a friend for a referral and check their references. Ensure the experts you chose to hire are reliable, professional and show a high sense of integrity. Reach out to professional associations to find an expert. Last alternative, is to use trial and error to find a good expert but this could cause you to waste time and money. The appropriate experts will help you to grow your business and make it more sustainable. For the complete list of “Survival Tools for Entrepreneurs” visit us online at www.gowhereitzat.com.

EDITOR’S DESK
THE DEVIATE – A DEPARTURE FROM NORMS AND ETHICS I have watched in awe and despair as the most vaunted
media matrix on the planet fail miserably to expose a venal, misogynistic, megalomaniacal man, who wants to be President of the United States. Is it that the elite guardians of the Fourth Estate are protecting their financial interests and are backing off him, just enough to make more money with him after his loss? After all, what an entertainment sensation he would be? The new show would of course have to negotiate for the rights to “The Biggest Loser,” providing he has enough money left to buy it, then, the protective main stream media can really cash in. Look, I am no conspiracy theorist, the chump said it himself – the system is rigged! The other equally plausible scenario is that they are flat out scared of reprisals in the event of a chump presidency, they know the extent of his vindictiveness. Why don’t they use the investigative resources they have to ferret out his TAX returns? Where is the Media Power when the country needs it?
Clive Williams
Every civilized person knows what Sociologists already know, every country, along with its Laws, have enshrined a set of norms or mores that we live by and are often dictated by a society’s values, ethics and sometimes religious influences. One such norm is that for the last 40 years presidential candidates lay bare their Tax returns, so that us mere mortals can feel comfortable knowing that our potential president lives by the same rules as we do - is not a tax cheat and is not involved in any shady financial schemes. After all, if you or I decide to apply for a business loan or obtain a mortgage, our tax returns are mandatory, so shouldn’t the person running for the highest office in the land be subject to this simple but established norm? The main stream press is guilty of mal-practice, as guardians of the Fourth Estate they have failed to expose this chumps violation of almost every established social and political norm; in a civilized society,
those are the seeds of anarchy. Sociologists refer to that type of errant behavior as social deviance. You and I may never understand what his supporters see in him and maybe we shouldn’t even try, but for America’s sake and for our collective sanity I call upon the GODS of every constellation to deliver us from this nightmare. As editor, I have decided that we will no longer refer to him by his given name as this might further his ambitions and notoriety, so we will refer to him as “the chump” or any other contextual slur we deem fitting at the time, pretty much the same respect he gave to the first Black president of the United States of America.

REAL ESTATE REALITY is likely to be much larger than the one-time profit involved in “flipping” houses (buying low, fixing up and selling higher). There is less anxiety about getting a price that justifies all of the work that went into acquisition, repair and sale of the property, and the tax treatment of ongoing rents may be more favorable than that of a capital gain from the sale of a single property. Investing in Multi-family housing may be one of the best Real Estate investment that yield’s the best R O I (rate of investment).
By Sharon R. Frank
Now that our economy has finally recovered from the
burst of the housing bubble and market crash of 2008, people are beginning to be more willing to invest, and are looking at real estate as a viable investment once again. But what is the best way to invest in real estate? Multi family housing! Why? The lifetime value of ongoing cash flow from rents
What does the rental market look like? According to Statistics taken from the US Department of housing, New housing is not keeping up with the growth in population. There were fewer than one million new housing units added last year, housing production was almost a third below the average of the last thirty years. Studies by New York University’s Furman Center have shown that rents are up in urban areas across the country, a trend that has been consistent across all kinds of neighborhoods. Low income renters, affluent renters and everybody in between have been affected by the increase in rental pricing. For those who invest in apartment buildings, these statistics support the theory that multi-family housing
investing is, and will most likely continue to be a great idea. As the population growth outstrips housing growth, rental properties will continue to be in high demand, which means rents are in little danger of collapsing. But, for my Newbies and potential investors, who have never before invested in multi-family housing, it would be prudent to work with a professional who is familiar with the market, as these transactions can be quite different than those involving the single family or small multi-family dwelling. Always follow the golden rule of real estate which is location is always key, look for neighborhoods with high growth potential. Line up your finances; talk to a mortgage professional, preferably someone who is familiar with multi-family financing and enlist the help of a real estate agent that can help you navigate and walk you through the process.

RIHANNA CARIBBEAN QUEEN & GLOBAL CITIZEN By Clive Williams Researchers: Syreeta Williams & Stone Williams
O
n Saturday September 24th, 2016 we were treated to a magnificent concert called, “The Global Citizen Festival”. The show, which was aired on MSNBC, was geared towards making a change in how the worlds poor is treated. The Global Citizen Festival is an annual antipoverty event, currently Directed by Chris Martin of Cold Play fame and its likely that he will assume that role for the next 15 years. The festival gives voice to the poor and disenfranchised in our world and provides a stage for performers, political speakers, actors and activists in support of UNICEF and The U.N development goals. This year marked the fifth iteration of this amazing festival where alcohol was not on sale. Everyone gathered at Central Park was in support of ending poverty in the world. The Festival partners with UNICEF and the UN Development Program. What is even more remarkable is, the assembly of talent, who has dedicated themselves, not only to perform, but to do what they can to ease the burden of poverty in our world. For me, personally, the festival marked a turning point in my world view, as it became a powerful reminder of the love, goodwill, concern and empathy that mankind is capable of demonstrating. Performers like YUSUF/CAT STEVENS, YANDEL, ELLIE GOULDING, PEARL JAM front man EDDIE VEDDER, CHRIS MARTIN, USHER, all came as special guests. Then came METALLICA, MAJOR LAZER, DEMI LAVATO, KENDRICK LAMAR AND The Caribbean queen and Global Citizen herself RIHANNA who closed the show.
All too often, we get so caught up in our own day to day problems that we lose sight of the big picture. We become oblivious or unaware of the millions and millions of poor children and families around the world, who have little or no access to food, water clothes education and sanitation. The global citizen organization, through the global citizen festival, highlights these discrepancies and engages the help of these caring altruistic artists to convey these truths. The media takes great pleasure, very often in lampooning, stereotyping and denigrating many of these artists who are young and impressionable, yet, give very little ink to the incredible charitable contributions that many are making at an early age.
The Global Partnership for Education and Global Citizen, where she will be the voice and advocate for over 330mil children who are currently out of school. She also used her influence by sending a tweet to the French President Francois Hollande, asking him about his leadership on a bill called Education Cannot Wait which provided funds for kids in crisis. Through her influence, the leaders of France, Canada and other countries around the world have pledged more monies for education. Rihanna’s influence has spurred both France and England into action. She is powerful enough to prick the collective conscience of the world.
Rihanna’s conviction and commitment was evident in her charitable performance on Saturday September 24th, in Central Park as she closed that outstanding show. Her performance of R&B, Rock, Reggae and some other genres in between was explosive, versatile and compelling. HEALTH & FITNESS Glaucoma Patients’ Eye Pressure Can be Reduced in 5 Minute Office Procedure:
Richard Shapiro, MD, of Valley Stream Explains By Lauren Traub Teton
SLT stands for Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty and is an eye procedure treating glaucoma which was approved by the FDA in 2001. It is popular worldwide and is becoming the first treatment prescribed for high pressure in the eye (s) by many modern doctors. We interviewed Dr. Richard Shapiro, an ophthalmologist, treating glaucoma and other eye diseases in Valley Stream, NY about SLT. Q. Dr. Shapiro, why do you use SLT on your patients with high Intra-ocular pressure? A. I use SLT because it is an effective and proven treatment to help reduce intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma. SLT also has the advantage of not exposing the patient to the risk of side effects that medications such as glaucoma eye drops do, as well as avoiding the inconvenience and costs of these drops. Q. How long have you been using it? Who is the ideal patient to benefit from SLT?
A. I have been using SLT for over 10 years for both newly diagnosed Glaucoma patients as well as patients already on medication. Q. Can SLT reduce the amount of glaucoma eye drops your patients need? A. I have found it an effective way of reducing or eliminating the need for these patients to take eye drops.
Testimonial: “I have just undergone the SLT procedure for the second time and I can honestly say that this procedure is painless and I’m very comfortable with it. Dr. Shapiro is the only ophthalmologist whom I would entrust with the care of my eyes. I have been coming here since 1995.” Michael E. Charles, Springfield Gardens, Queens, NY
Q. What kind of results have you observed in your patients? A. In the vast majority of the patients I have treated with SLT I have found that they have significant and longlasting eye pressure reduction, often for several years. Since SLT doesn’t injury tissue, it can be repeated when and if necessary.
For more information on this breakthrough therapy call Lauren at 914 764 0115
Q. What is the cost? A. Since the procedure is an accepted glaucoma treatment, and is FDA approved, it is covered by Medicare and most Medical Insurance.

FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT Withdrawing your Pension and Retirement Savings By Patrick A. Sterling
Your Retirement savings are exactly that – Retirement savings. These funds are what old timers refer to as “paying yourself money”. You are saving for the long term, when you are no longer in the work force. These funds will be critical to the lifestyle you will experience in retirement.
you’ll pay a hefty early withdrawal penalty of 10% in this case $1,000. Additionally, the total withdrawal amount will be taxed at your ordinary tax rate. If your tax rate is 15%, that will be another $1,500. So from your hard earned and saved $10,000, you would have received a net of $5,500.
So be careful not to withdraw your 403(b) 401(k) or other retirement financial instruments for resolving everyday issues, unless you really must!! But if you withdraw these funds, here is how it works. When you initially open a traditional IRA, (as opposed to a Roth IRA), 401(k), or 403(b), with your employer sponsored investment advisor(s), those funds are saved tax free. This means your salary deduction which goes directly to your Investment Advisor, is not taxed through payroll.
Further, your $10,000 compounded at 7% weekly over 20 years, would be approximately $40,500!
This tax free arrangement is an incentive from the US Government for you to save for retirement. If however, you find yourself in the unenviable position of needing your funds for some emergency purposes (other than a home purchase), you will lose significant amounts of your hard earned and saved retirement funds. Let’s say you withdraw $10,000 of your tax free retirement investment plan. Most investment companies will immediately withhold 20%. That’s $2,000. So you receive $8,000. At tax filing time

Maybe a better method for you is to borrow from your own account. When you borrow from your retirement savings account, there is no tax implication. You simply complete a loan application via your investment advisor, and receive up to 50% of the amount in your account. If you repay the loan within the predetermined schedule, you actually repay yourself and the interest rates on these loans are much smaller than that which you would pay on the open market. If you do not repay the loan as scheduled, the loan becomes a withdrawal. At that point the scenario above would play out.. Another issue facing some of you is this; what to do when you’ve left an organization that you began an individual retirement account? Many of you worry that the organization that you’ve left may not manage your retirement funds prudently. And

further, you may believe it may be cumbersome to retrieve your funds when you need to access same. Here’s the good news: The organization you were with does not have custody of your funds. Retirement funds are invested in equity, bonds, and other financial instruments with investment brokers. They are the ones that retain and manage your funds. Your former company however, does have influence over those investments. If you have an individual retirement vehicle, like a 401(k), or 403(b), many have specific individual contracts. These contracts are with you and the broker, and not with your former employer. You therefore would have total control over these funds and can move your money in and out of different stocks and bonds at will. So if you have left an employer, there is no need to withdraw your retirement funds. Of course you can always rollover to an individual IRA that you exclusively control at your local bank, or broker. So think twice and hard before raiding your retirement fund.

The Best Fruits and Veggies to Eat This Fall
S
ure, we all get excited for summer’s bounty of sweetberries and juicy watermelon, but there’s more to fall than Halloween costumes and hay rides. From September to November, the autumn harvest brings a variety of healthful and delicious produce, from squash and sweet potatoes to apples and pears. While almost all produce can be grown somewhere yearround, trucking produce across the country (or across the world) isn’t easy. Buying local seasonal produce not only potentially reduces ourcarbon footprint and helps local economies, but it may also result inmore nutritious produce. So why not dig into fall fruits like apples and cranberries, which offer essential vitamins and antioxidants that slow aging and may help fight cancer? On the veggie side, the entire cruciferous family—that’s the cabbage, rutabaga, and cauliflower gang—is in season and offers a compound known as glucosinolates that may also have cancer-fighting potential. And who could forget about squash? These big, bright gourds offer healthy alpha- and beta-carotene, which promote good eyesight. To get the best of what fall has to offer, check out our top autumnal produce picks that are both delicious and super healthy, and keep track of what’s in season near you. Also don’t be afraid to try something new. (Who knew leeks or figs would taste so good?) Apples These sweet, crunchy fall favorites are packed with antioxidants, which may help prevent chronic illness and slow aging. Among popular apple varieties (and there are more than 7,500 different types!), Fuji apples have the highest concentration of phenolics and flavonoids, while Cortland and Empire apples have the lowest.Quince, a floral-flavored cousin of the apple, is also at its best in autumn and can be added to jams, jellies, and desserts— but it is inedible raw. Beets They may be available year-round, but beets are at their best in the fall. Besides the familiar reddish-purple color, you can also find golden, white, and even multicolored beets. When shopping, look for firm, smooth bulbs and (if attached) bright, crisp greens. Toss the greens in salads
30 | PULSE OF THE CARIBBEAN PEOPLE
and roast the beets for their betaine—a compound that may help prevent heart and liver disease—and nitrate, which may increase blood flow to the brain and potentially reduce risk of dementia. Brussels Sprouts and Cabbage Packed with vitamins A and C, cabbage and its mini-me, Brussels sprouts, boast high concentrations of cancerfighting glucosinolates(which also lend these veggies their distinct flavor). Try this easyBrussels sprouts scramble for a savory start to your day. Cranberries Between the size of a blueberry and a grape, cranberries taste their best October through November, though only 5 percent actually make it to the fresh produce section (the other 95 percent are dried, canned, or turned into juice). Research suggests cranberry concentrate can help prevent urinary tract infections and that fresh cranberries can help prevent oral diseases and slow the growth of cancer. Pears These sweet fruits fall into two major categories: European and Asian. In the U.S., the European varieties, Bosc and Bartlett, are most common, and grow on the west coast during fall. Pears are high in soluble fiber, which helps lower “bad” (LDL) cholesterol. To get that daily dose of fiber and to satisfy a sweet tooth, snack on the fruit whole or incorporate into recipes from filling breakfasts tohealthier cocktails. Persimmons Resembling a bright orange peach wearing a leafy cap, mostpersimmons are imported from Asia, with a few American-grown species sprinkled about the Southeast. Just be warned: Under-ripe persimmons can be extremely tart, so allow them to ripen at room temperature before eating. Compared to apples, persimmons can be considered an even healthier option thanks to their fiber, antioxidants, and minerals. Pomegranates Held sacred by many ancient religions, pomegranates have health benefits that have only been recognized more recently (POM juice, anyone?). While much of the research has been inconclusive, some studies suggest the
fruit’s antioxidants may reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications like heart attacks. Early studies also suggest that pomegranate may help prevent breast and colon cancers, though results are far from conclusive. These labor-intensive fruits can be a hassle to deseed, but we figured out the best way to do so. Ah, victory is sweet. Pumpkins Though technically a member of the squash family, with their rich history and health benefits (plus their essential role in Halloween festivities), pumpkins earn their own spot on our list. Pumpkin is one of the best sources of alpha- and beta-carotene, which can be converted into retinol to promote healthy vision and cell growth. Pumpkin seeds are also a good source of alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid that may help those with heart disease, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. Toast them up for a deliciously nostalgic treat! Rutabagas and Turnips These root veggies aren’t winning any beauty pageants with their bulbous shape and occasionally hair-like roots, but what they lack in looks they make up for in nutrition. Research suggests eating turnips and rutabagas may help reduce the risk of prostate and lung cancers. What’s more, turnip greens are a source of calcium, and one cup of raw rutabaga offers a respectable three grams of fiber. Squash From festive photos to Thanksgiving table centerpieces, squash is the poster food for autumn. Summer squash are still available locally until October in some parts of the country, and winter squash begin to crop up (pun intended) as summer squash heads out. The gourd family offers varieties including acorn, butternut, and delicata squash, as well as spaghetti squash and its pasta-like strands. Sweet Potatoes These orange beauties have the best flavor during fall, their peak season. Like squash, sweet potatoes are rich in beta-carotene, which can prevent vitamin A deficiencies, promote healthy eyesight and generate retinol production. Sweet potatoes are also a good source of vitamin C, and when eaten with their skin on, a medium tater can pack nearly four grams of fiber. Courtesy of www.greatist.com

Small Business Loan Mistakes To Avoid A
s a small business, it can be hard enough to get a small business loan without adding in unnecessary mistakes into the mix. Make sure you don’t make one of these 4 major mistakes when seeking out and applying for a loan. Maxing out credit cards. A credit card can be great when used wisely. If you have big purchases every month that are then paid off with revenues made from the purchase then by all means, use a credit card. It’s a great way to build credit for future loans. However, if you’re it to make ends meet, stop! This will only put you further behind, resulting in higher interest rates and a lower credit score. Ignoring the fine print. One of the biggest mistakes new business owners make when seeking out a loan is not reading through all the fine print. Not only is it important to know exactly what it is you’re signing up for, you also need to make sure your business can handle (and
afford) the rates and terms presented to you. If Having no plan. Throughout the application you go into it blind, it may end up costing your process, you WILL get asked what the money business far more than the initial cost of the loan. is for, so you need to have a detailed plan laid out for the purposes of the funds. Do you plan Failing to shop around. We know it can be to expand? Do you need to hire on seasonal tough to get a loan offer, but don’t jump at the support? Just getting a loan as a cushion for first one you get just because someone approved future unknown things that may arise is not a you. You want to be able to compare different good enough reason to get a loan. If that’s your offers so you can get the best rates, so even if it reason for seeking out a loan, consider a line of takes a little longer, it will be well worth it in credit instead. the end to know that you got the best loan offer instead of the first. A successful loan application and approval requires time and effort on your part. Most of us don’t just go buy the first car we see; we do our research first and only then do we make a decision based on what will best fit our needs. The same holds true for a small business loan, so make sure you’ve done your research first! Courtesy of www.Lendio.com
