elcome to the fi rst issue of WhereTraveler magazine, which has been in the making for 83 years. Where magazine, our flagship publication, has been the traveler’s friend since it was first published in 1936. It’s been a great ride but, as with any voyage, one can’t stay in the same place. With the Summer/Fall 2019 issue, we embark on an exciting new adventure as Where takes on a new look and a new name. Like its predecessor, WhereTraveler magazine continues our tradition of offering the best insider information about the local market but with a dynamic new design that speaks to today’s traveler. Even the most experienced traveler knows that having a local friend with inside knowledge of a destination makes a trip all the more special, someone who not only knows the essential, not-tobe-missed sights but also the city’s hidden treasures. For millions of travelers each year, that friend is WhereTraveler magazine, providing valuable advice through print and digital products that cover more than 100 cities, making WhereTraveler the world’s premier travel brand. The new look is sleek and modern, as represented by the new logo, and the compact size makes the magazine conveniently portable. Inside is the same great content we have always provided but in a more concise model, packed with useful information in a fun and visually dramatic format. We show you the best places to shop and dine, the landmarks and attractions not to be missed. We guide you to experiences that will help you make the most of your visit. Our redesigned
Guide section now includes up to 50 percent more listings. Once you have explored the city you are in, WhereTraveler will help you prepare for your next trip. See our new Where Next page, featuring photos from markets around the nation where you will also find WhereTraveler magazine. Then visit our website, wheretraveler. com, which offers travel information on 100 destinations around the world. I hope you enjoy this debut issue of WhereTraveler magazine and that you will look for it at your next destination.

Head to Black Sheep’s rooftop bar for farm-fresh local fare and drinks. Local is also key at Crane Ramen, where ingredients come from sites no further than 100 miles from the restaurant. The Bread & Board delights with both sandwiches and fine dining.
Man’s best friend will be a better bestie after some time at Bark on Park, an urban dog boutique/spa. Afterwards, treat yourself to some gourmet baked goods (and a cake for home) at Motion Sweets. Those who love antiques won’t be able to get enough of 5 Points Vintage.
With six rotating taps and 200-plus bottles, discover eclectic choices at Alewife. A rooftop bar and craft cocktails are stunners at River & Post. And 12 taps can be had on the patio at newcomer Marah Brewing.
The Cummer Museum has a collection of works that dates back to 2000 B.C. and through the 21st century. The Italian gardens are also something to marvel at. A six-acre park that skirts the St. Johns River at one of its widest points, enjoy a quiet respite at Memorial Park, walking distance to all the aforementioned.

From horseback riding along the Atlantic coastline and bike riding through a beachfront park to airboat rides across the St. Johns River and hang gliding over marshland, there are dozens of entertaining and exhilarating ways to see the First Coast. Follow us on a bespoke tour through Jacksonville, Amelia BY KARA POUND Island and St. Augustine.

Fernandina Beach, a city located on Amelia Island just north of Jacksonville, has become one of the most sought-after destinations for horseback riding on the shore. Check out Kelly Seahorse Ranch, a family-owned operation exclusively endorsed by the Florida Park Service and nestled within the maritime forest of Amelia Island State Park. Open every day
but Monday, the ranch offers one-hour guided beach rides multiple times a day for those ages 13 and older. There’s also the neighboring Amelia Island Horseback Riding, which greets riders in Peters Point Beachfront Park for sunrise rides, daytime rides, sunset rides and special events like anniversary and engagement rides. Now that’s a romantic way to see the First Coast.

First Coast. Check out Amelia Island’s extensive bike trails. From leisure rider to avid cyclist, the island, which is part of the Sea Islands chain of barrier islands, has become known as one of the best places in the Sunshine State for getting around on two wheels. Spanning nearly 6 miles from Peters Point Beachfront Park to Amelia Island State Park, Amelia Island Trail is a paved, tree-lined route and part of the East Coast Greenway, which stretches from Florida to Maine. Just south of Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island is downtown Jacksonville, a historic Southern city dubbed the “Gateway to Florida” and boasting a long and
colorful past. If history is your preferred method of getting to know a place and its people, then sign up for a Jacksonville Walking Tour with AdLib Luxury Tours and hear stories of the River City ( Jacksonville’s other nickname) as you walk through buildings and explore secret underground tunnels beneath the city. Learn about the Great Fire of 1901 and the city’s influence on the silent film industry as the “First Hollywood.” If you’d rather see Jacksonville’s downtown and neighboring areas from the water, then add St. Johns River Taxi & Tours to your list. Every Friday and Saturday night, enjoy a sunset cruise aboard the Miss Hadley for an hour-and-a-half

Located off Port Arthur Road, tours run seven days a week and take guests along the marshes and swamps of the Intracoastal Waterway searching for alligators, manatees and birds, as well as offering a trip to the mouth of the Atlantic Ocean to look for dolphins, sharks, whales and turtles. Just south of Jacksonville is St. Augustine, a historic city founded in 1565 and dubbed the Nation’s Oldest City. many times missed by tourists visiting the city—so you’ll discover the hidden gems. Tours are typically two hours long, include training and are offered four times per day. They are also available in Spanish. If you prefer a slow-paced way to see the First Coast, downtown St. Augustine boasts two horse-drawn carriage companies; Southern Carriages and Country Carriages. From romantic carriage rides along the Matanzas River’s Bayfront to haunted carriage rides where guests are privy to the city’s long, haunted past, carriage rides are perfect for the entire family.
