elcome to the fi rst issue of WhereTraveler magazine, which has been in the making for 83 years. Where magazine, our flagship publication, has been the traveler’s friend since it was first published in 1936. It’s been a great ride but, as with any voyage, one can’t stay in the same place. With the April 2019 issue, we embark on an exciting new adventure as Where takes on a new look and a new name. Like its predecessor, WhereTraveler magazine continues our tradition of offering the best insider information about the local market but with a dynamic new design that speaks to today’s traveler. Even the most experienced traveler knows that having a local friend with inside knowledge of a destination makes a trip all the more special, someone who not only knows the essential, not-to-bemissed sights but also the city’s hidden treasures. For millions of travelers each year, that friend is WhereTraveler magazine, providing valuable advice through print and digital products that cover more than 100 cities, making WhereTraveler the world’s premier travel brand. The new look is sleek and modern, as represented by the new logo, and the compact size makes the magazine conveniently portable. Inside is the same great content we have always provided but in a more concise model, packed with useful information in a fun and visually dramatic format. We show you the best places to shop and dine, the landmarks and attractions not to be missed. We guide you to experiences that will help you make the most of your visit. Our redesigned Guide section
now includes up to 50 percent more listings. Once you have explored the city you are in, WhereTraveler will help you prepare for your next trip. See our new Where Next page, featuring photos from markets around the nation where you will also find WhereTraveler magazine. Then visit our website, wheretraveler.com, which offers travel information on 100 destinations around the world. I hope you enjoy this debut issue of WhereTraveler magazine and that you will look for it at your next destination.

Las Vegas, Lāna‘i and now Maui, I have been a concierge for almost 21 years. Q: WHAT TYPE OF EXPERIENCE(S) DO YOU TRY TO PROVIDE FOR YOUR GUESTS? A: Many guests save a life-
time to come to Maui and I want to make sure that it is a vacation that they will never forget. The key is getting to know each and every guest. Where they are visiting from? Have they been to Maui before? And if they are celebrating any special occasion? Q: WHAT’S THE MOST POPULAR REQUEST YOU’VE RECEIVED RECENTLY? A: By far the most
frequent requests are places of interest along the Road to Hāna and EXPERT TIP

Q: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE EATERIES OR PLACES TO VISIT ON MAUI? A: Some of my favorite
eateries on island are ROCKsalt for their lobster miso, Pā‘ia Fish Market for its fish tacos, Monkeypod Kitchen for its mai tai and strawberry cream pie, and Lahaina Grill for everything on their menu.

something by ocean, by land and by air. Experience a snorkel excursion, zipline through nature with Skyline Eco Adventures and there is no better way to see the island than on a Blue Hawaiian Helicopter tour. Make sure to stop and pick up a Maui Gold Pineapple before you leave paradise.

LOCAL FLAVORS
Ancient Hawaiians marked special occasions and important religious ceremonies with community-wide feasts, called an ‘aha ‘aina, where everyone gathered to celebrate a successful harvest, birth of a new baby or to pay homage to a revered deity. After Western contact, the word lū‘au (the name for the leaves of the taro plant, which is incorporated into many Hawaiian dishes) became associated with this fête. 10

The Lū‘au’s Evolution Over the years, as Hawai‘i grew into a mega tourist destination, this traditional feast evolved into a spectacle, which began to include blazing fire-knife performances, the hip shaking of the hula and the fast-paced beat of wooden drums. The modern lū‘au gained notoriety in the 1950s when ocean liners began bringing in tourists who were eager to learn island customs. As a result, commercial Hawaiian lū‘au began to pop up across the Islands as hula girls and ‘ukulele became iconic images of Hawai‘i. Here are four of our favorite lū‘au on Maui.

THE GUIDE
Navigate Sunshining Day Viewing sunrise from Maui’s highest peak, Haleakalā, counts as one of life’s signature moments. The dose of mana (power) at this spot is worth the preparation, drive time and, yes, even the predawn awakening. The Park now requires reservations for each vehicle entering the area before sunrise (3 to 7 a.m.). https://www.nps.gov/hale
EXPEDITIONS Daily round-trip ferry
service between Maui and Lanai, with five departures from Lahaina Harbor on Maui and five from Manele Harbor on Lanai. For more information and schedules, call 808.661.3756. SAIL TRILOGYSail to the island of Lanai
for an excellent day at sea. If the season is right, you may see a whale or two. sailtrilogy.com. 180 Lahainaluna Rd., 808.874.5649.
First Look HALEAKALA One of Hawai‘i’s biggest
attractions is the stunning 10,000-foot Haleakala, the world’s largest dormant volcano. Haleakala’s most magnificent feature is the crater itself: 3,000 feet deep, 2.5 miles across and with a circumference of 21 miles. www.nps.gov/hale/index.htm
SNORKELING OFF MOLOKINIThe tur-
quoise waters and marine life around this tiny crescent-shaped island are located three miles off the southwest coast of Maui. www.molokinicrater.com ‘IAO NEEDLEThe ‘Iao Needle is a
1,200-foot cone of hardened lava at the heart of the ‘Iao Valley, a 6.2-acre state park just west of Wailuku in West Maui.
Island Views KAANAPALI It’s easy to see why this
former sugar plantation was chosen as the island’s first planned resort destination: the beaches. KIHEIThis unpretentious South Maui
town draws locals and visitors to its beaches. PAIA Once a plantation town centered
on Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company, today, Paia enjoys its status as one of the top windsurfing destinations in the world.
UPCOUNTRYWith its mild climate,
fertile soil, grazing lands and diverse botanicals, Upcountry has become the Maui version of Napa. WAILEAThe popular South Maui
destination is a land of posh resorts, manicured golf courses, upscale retail, dining and, one can confidently say, the island’s best beaches. Here, expanses of immaculate sand, ultramarine waters and lazily swaying palms are the stuff of those proverbial “get away from it all” dreams.
Transportation MAUI BUSThe Maui Bus has eleven
routes. The Kihei Islander Route connects Wailea, Kihei, Maalaea Harbor and Kahului; the Lahaina Islander links Kahului, Maalaea Harbor and Lahaina; The Kaanapali Islander Route connects Lahaina with the resorts at Kaanapali. For route and timetable information, call 808.871.4838.
MILLIONS OF YEARS AGO, submarine volcano eruptions created the trifecta of Moloka‘i, Lāna‘i and the uninhabited island of Kaho‘olawe.
