CHRISTMAS AT THE OLD TREASURY Immerse yourself in a time gone by with the Old Treasury Building’s annual Christmas display from the 1920s. This nostalgic exhibition showcases the kinds of decorations people made at home during the 1920s. While there were quite sophisticated Christmas decorations for sale in the shops, most people could not afford them and instead made their own. Newspapers of the time printed designs and patterns for cheerful decorations which could be made at home using readily available materials such as coloured paper, crepe, tissue paper and card. As a reminder of times past, the Old Treasury Building has used these patterns to recreate a homely Christmas in the caretakers’ basement flat. From 18 November. Free entry. By Christine Knight THE ANNUAL MELBOURNE CUP Carnival is more than just the “race that stops the nation”, it is a 158-year-old social and cultural tradition that runs over four days, from November 2 - 9, and encompasses a multitude of races and events at Flemington Racecourse. Kicking off the Carnival is the AAMI Victoria Derby Day on Saturday, 2 November. Said to be the day for racing purists, AAMI Victoria Derby Day is considered one of the most prestigious days of racing in Australasia, and includes nine Group races, four at the elite Group 1 level worth $1m or more. The feature Group 1 AAMI

Victoria Derby is worth $2 million, and is regarded as Australia’s premier staying classic for three-year-olds. Fashion is, as ever, an important part of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, and AAMI Derby Day kicks off the Myer Fashion on the Field events. Black and white is the traditional colour scheme for women on this day, while men often choose to wear a grey morning suit with a peacock vest and pin-stripe pants. An official flower for the day, the cornflower, can also be worn by racegoers, for example in a lapel. The focal point of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, the Lexus Melbourne

Cup Day, is on Tuesday, 5 November. A truly spectacular event, the $8 million Lexus Melbourne Cup is an exhilarating race watched by 100,000+ people on the field, plus the hundreds of millions across the globe who tune into the broadcast. As well as being an exciting day on the field, the Lexus Melbourne Cup Day is also a time for fashion to take centre stage. It’s the day to make a strong fashion statement with an exotic or outrageous ensemble; statement hats are an essential accessory, as is a yellow rose in the lapel.

Kennedy Oaks Day, on Thursday, 7 November. The traditional “Ladies Day” of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, Kennedy Oaks Day gives women the opportunity to express their own signature style while connecting with friends and family. Ladies of all ages dress for Kennedy Day in their most feminine ensemble, including beautiful florals, romantic looks and delicate fabrics. Flemington hosts one of the world’s great outdoor fashion events on this day, with the announcement of the winner of the Women’s Racewear national competition of Myer Fashions on the Field. Visitors should remember to wear the official flower of Kennedy Oaks Day, which is a pink rose. On the race track, the highlight event is the Group 1 Kennedy Oaks, which is a $1 million classic for threeyear-old fillies over 2500m.

Finishing up the Melbourne Cup Carnival on its fourth and final day is the Seppelt Wines Stakes Day on Saturday, 9 November. The day features two Group 1 races, headlined by the $2 million weight-for-age Seppelt Mackinnon Stakes, as well as the scorching 1200m $2 million Darley Sprint Classic. Seppelt Wines Stakes Day is also known as the Carnival’s "family day" and features Myer Fashions on the Field for children and families. The final day of the Carnival has a relaxed atmosphere and gives kids aged 6-17 the opportunity to shine in the latest junior fashions either by competing in the fashion events or just having fun with family and friends. Eau De Vie Eau De Vie is a secret bar that contains another secret bar. Hidden below Malthouse Lane, the main bar is a throwback to 1920s prohibition-era America, filled with high tables and intimate nooks.
