ENTERTAINMENT All about Anna The end of October sees classical music’s it-girl, violinist Anna Tifu, team up with the Santa Cecilia Orchestra. Alexandra Bruzzese fills you in. Hailed as “an extraordinary talent” and “enchanting” by some of the music world’s top critics, Italian-Romanian violinist Anna Tifu treats the Eternal City to a flurry of appearances this month at Auditorium Parco della Musica. Tifu, whose father was a violinist himself, picked up a bow at the tender age of six. At eight years old, she began to perform in public, sweeping up awards in her wake; by 11, she had made her debut as a soloist with the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire. A year later she performed the Bruch Violin Concerto at arguably the world’s most prestigious opera house, La Scala in Milan. At 15 years old, the prodigy received her music diploma in her hometown of Cagliari, Sardinia with special honors. Since then, Tifu has appeared with many of the globe’s finest orchestras and chamber ensembles, including Stuttgarter Philarmoniker, Orchestra della Fondazione Arena di Verona, and Orchestra del Teatro La Fenice di Venezia. She’s played under the baton of legendary conductor Yuri Temirkanov, taken the stage with beloved opera singer Andrea Bocelli, and headlined at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Asked to name the highlight of her rich career, Tifu has said “my debut with Santa Cecilia. To play with Santa Cecilia had been my dream since I was a little girl.” From 24 to 26 October, under the baton of Finnish guest conductor Mikko Franck, Tifu performs Sibelius’s Concerto for violin, the great Finnish composer’s only concerto. See her interpret the piece on her priceless 1716 Stradivarius. Also on the bill are the overture to Berlioz’s opera Béatrice et Bénédict (in honor of the 150th anniversary of the composer’s passing), and Stravinsky’s revolutionary The Rite of Spring.
