This year’s graduating SENIORS are the last class to experience all six years with Principal Jeffrey Brokamp. After a year crammed with AP classes and a bit of senioritis here and there, SENIORS are ready to take on the world outside of the doors of WHHS. • The world mourned and memed the death of Harambe after a toddler fell into the gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo. • It thunderstormed at the SENIOR picnic. • WHHS received numerous threats from creepy clowns. Junior year was filled with dreams of becoming a SENIOR. Some took the ACT countless times, piled on AP classes and begged teachers for early recommendation letters. Others contracted early-onset seniorits. • Multiple dance crazes emerged. • No “after prom”. • WHHS introduced both Rugby and Archery to the WHHS sports program.
Sophomore year was one step closer to graduation, but students still had plenty of time to enjoy high school. • The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge trended among students. • Ice cream vending machine appeared in the arcade. • Automatic hand dryers replaced paper towels, causing much frustration. • Fusian sushi started coming every Wednesday. • Every Friday was food truck Friday. In freshman year there were no more mods. Six minute passing time turned to 5 minutes. The first year of high school was a time for new memories. • At Frosh students “Turned Down for What”. • In the hallways, students saw countless T-shirts that said “But first let me take a #Selfie”. • In January 2014, there was a full week of snow days.
SENIOR year, 2016 - 2017
“At the pep-rally this year, all of the teachers were diving and actually participating in the relay race. J-Bro took his jacket off and slid in his nice pants, shirt, tie and everything.” SENIOR Rory Tekulve

SENIOR PRANKS
“Science Olympiad went to states for the first time in Columbus, which was really fun.”
CAMILLE WILLIAMS/ CHATTERBOX The ‘dab’ and ‘running man challenge’ dominated junior year.
SENIOR Madhulika Kastury
DELANEY OWENS/CHATTERBOX
Sophomore year, 2014 - 2015 “I remember the pep rally had a helicopter and they were trying to get this guy to jump out of the helicopter…but they threw a dummy out of the helicopter” SENIOR Willy Schwerin
There were multiple Senior pranks, including blocking the halls in crowded areas, and an anti-prank. SENIORS also took the job of janitorial staff for a day.
CAMILLE WILLIAMS/ CHATTERBOX There were both whips and nae naes.
Freshman year, 2013 - 2014 “Snow week was fantastic.” “The ping pong SENIOR Corine Clust announcement with the jingle started ninth grade” SENIOR Ben Aufermann Art by Shelly/Skechport.
Although many students found their way around WHHS by eighth grade, 2012 was the first year for many. • There were not as many cockroaches in the locker rooms, but there were plenty of crickets in the Arts and Science building. • Sudents jammed to the “Harlem Shake”, “Thriftshop” and “What does the Fox Say?”. • The varsity basketball team made it to the final four. Many SENIORS started out as Effies, frantically trekking up from the mods with oversized backpacks. • The varsity football team made it to the playoffs. • Longer lockers were still around, with many students sharing them. • The Hunger Games was the most highly anticipated movie of 2012.

E-flat year, 2012 - 2013
EMMA HEINES/CHATTERBOX By the fall of 2012, construction of the senior high gym and music building was completed.
On a day in May, the halls were flooded with yarn, which caused catastrophes during passing bells. “The Librarians were falling, yelling at people to stop walking. I was DEAD.” SENIOR Gabby Lowrey
“In eighth grade we went to Ohio State for basketball” SENIOR Mario Roberts Jr.
“Some seniors pulled a prank where they put a [smoke] bomb in the arcade. We missed our whole third bell. The fire department called and we were on the football field. It was fun because we basically played on the field for a whole bell.” SENIOR Shayla Delamar
Effie year, 2011 - 2012
CAMILLE WILLIAMS/ CHATTERBOX Snapchat made its debut in 2011, but it did not develop the “My Story” feature until 2013.
“Before the new building was renovated, in Latin we couldn’t have class in the classroom because it was too hot. We had to have class in the forum for like a three-week period.” SENIOR Mitch Deck
There was a flash mob to “Party Rock Anthem” in Blair Circle. “I was in the arcade and I was like, ‘I can’t wait to be a senior.” SENIOR Aaryn Stephens

Walnut Hills High School bids goodbye to faculty
David Case
EMMA HEINES/ CHATTERBOX
Delaney Owens, ‘21 After growing up on Long Island, WHHS teacher David Case attended Ballard High School in Louisville, where he fell in love with mathematics. As a math major at Purdue, Case believed teaching would be a great
career, and set out on the path toward over thirty years of teaching. After teaching with the CAMAS program at Woodword High School for ten years, Case moved with the program to Hughes High School for another sixteen years. Next, he came to WHHS where he is ending his teaching career to play golf and spend more time with his wife, children and friends. Over his years of experience, Case has taught Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Probability & Statistics, and his favorite, Calculus AA. Through his many decades of teaching, Case notes the most difficult part of the job is keeping students engaged. Even though he is looking forward to the opportunities his retirement will bring and “not getting up at 5:40am”, Case will miss the people at WHHS “They were a great staff to work with,” he said. His advice to future and current WHHS students is to “work hard!”

Virginia Hautz
JACK SAMUELS/ CHATTERBOX
Delaney Owens, ‘21 WHHS teacher Virginia Hautz was born in Southern Italy and moved to Cincinnati when she was eight years old, not knowing any English. She grew up in a family that valued reading and learning, encouraging her to pursue a career in teaching.
Mark Rucker
Tom Donnelly Tom Donnelly has been the Athletic Director at WHHS for nine years. “I’ve learned that Mr. Brokamp, Walnut Hills and students are very special and wonderful,” Donnelly said. “I’ve come to appreciate what this institution has done and what they teach people and what they can help people accomplish.” His favorite memory was when a team cancelled their game against Anderson, and WHHS players stepped in so that the Anderson players could have their senior night. The year before, Anderson had lost a player to cancer. The WHHS supported and helped mourn the loss that night by wearing black and orange jersey’s with the number of the deceased player on it.

Micheal Sweeny, ‘17 Longtime chemistry teacher Mark Rucker has decided to start something fresh and walk away, not only from WHHS, but teaching altogether. Rucker started subbing at WHHS during the 2002-2003 school year,
Wally Hill identity reveal Yes, it was me all along. I’m Sarah Hansen, alias Wally Hill and it has been an absolute pleasure to subject all of you to my opinions this year. Let me start off by saying how surreal I still find this whole thing to be. I never seriously thought that I would be Wally. I do remember thinking about what it might be like to write under this pseudonym in seventh grade, as I gazed at a copy of The Chatterbox. Maybe I could be that anonymous writer. It would be so cool, right? My seventh grade self absolutely thought it indeed would be very cool and no doubt very glamorous to do such a thing, to be this mysterious personage, for the entire
five seconds of consideration that she gave this idea. After that, all thoughts of Wally were pushed from my mind. Until last year, that is, when Samantha Gerwe-Perkins asked me if I would, and if I hadn’t accepted then you obviously wouldn’t be reading this now. I definitely wasn’t the most secretive Wally Hill. I really, really tried to keep my journalistic activities secret, but it seemed like most of The Chatterbox had me pegged from the very beginning—as soon as the first piece under my new pseudonym went to print, Pavan and Matthew let me know, quite directly, exactly what they thought about my article. To them, and a fair many others, I was the obvious suspect, and my stuttering attempts
at denial didn’t seem to help my case. I can only hope that I was better at writing than I was at lying about it, given my utter ineptitude at the latter. Writing as Wally presented a different sort of challenge— for me, they were a character, one with no set personality or history. The artistic freedom I was presented with was enormous— there was very little I couldn’t write about, and the abstract nature of Wally allowed me to approach any issue with any attitude. This selfdeterminism was a bit overwhelming, but it’s this very quality, this fluidity that makes writing as Wally so interesting. For the last time, Wally Hill

“I learned so much every day that I taught,” Hautz said. She began her career at Schwab Middle School, later moving to Western Hills High School. At WHHS she taught classes including Ancient and Medieval History, Italian and ninth grade Honors before settling down in the English department. Hautz retired earlier this school year. She taught at WHHS for 22 years. What she misses most about her job is working with her students. “I think because the students are so good at Walnut, and they’re so interested in learning, I think that makes teachers want to teach better,” Hautz said. “I think it made me a better teacher.” In retirement she is looking forward to traveling home to Italy to visit her family. “Take advantage of the wonderful opportunities that Walnut gives you because you’re surrounded by so much talent” she said. before becoming a full-time teacher in the spring of 2005. He has become one of the more memorable teachers WHHS has had in a while, whether it was his hands on approach with the chemistry materials, his intriguing life experiences or his many pet snakes. He brought an energy to the classroom that caused even the most uninterested to pay attention. When asked what he will miss most, he said, “Teaching Chemistry and watching the students learn the concepts.” Rucker will be traveling the country starting with Colorado where he will peak 12 summits, then Salt Lake City and Hillside Supper Club in San Francisco, California to work with a friend, then Portland, Oregon to work as a chemist on a farm and then by the spring of 2018 he will travel up to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to begin his descent down to Argentina by bike.
