EDITOR’S MESSAGE

The Changing World of Consumer Protection We are the Voice of African Consumers

As you may have realized, we have gradually moved the focus of the magazine from Ghana to the rest of Africa. We have also rebranded the magazine to be more reflective of what we stand for, thus combining our two flagship publications (Which Ghana and Which Africa) under a new name – African Consumers. Our one main objective is to attract a wider readership within Africa and beyond, as such we have moved the publication into the 21st century, by making it available through various media – Newsletters, On Digital, Online, Smartphone & Tablets, where you can read or download the magazine (www.Africanconsumers.org). Going forward, we set out to create a community in which people share their stories, as such we are also giving our readership the chance to interact more with us and with each other by increasing our presence on the social media. Check us out on LinkedIn, Like us on Facebook, and engage us with interesting discussions on twitter. We welcome your feedback; Send us your emails, your pictures, your complaints, ideas and suggestions...The fight for consumer protection will never be won without you! God Bless Editor

CONSUMER AFFAIRS

EMPOWERING THE

BECOME A SAVVY AFRICAN CONSUMER TODA

African consciousness about consumer issues has become more important than ever before. Why? Because African consumers are still so unprotected and are vulnerable to being taken advantage of. One main objective of African Consumer is to educate and empower the consumers across Africa. This is because empowered consumers demand safe goods, better product standards and quality assurance: and demand that agreements and contracts are honoured.

Know Your Consumer rights

The right to have basic needs met – in provision of food, clothing, shelter, health and public utilities. The right to safety - protection against products, production processes and services that are hazardous to health or life. AFRICAN CONSUMERS MAGAZINE |

06

The right to be informed - having the facts needed to make an informed choice and protection against misleading advertising and labelling. The right to choose - able to select from a range of products and services offered at competitive prices with an assurance of satisfactory quality. The right to be heard - having consumer interests represented in the making and execution of government policy and in the development of products and services. The right to redress – getting fair settlement of just claims, including compensation for misrepresentation, shoddy goods or unsatisfactory services. The right to consumer education – acquiring necessary knowledge to make informed choices about goods and services; basic awareness of consumer rights and responsibilities and

AFRICAN CONSUMER

how to act on them. The right to a healthy environment - To live and work in an environment that is nonthreatening to one’s well-being.

Understand Your Responsibilities

“With rights come responsibilities,”

says Consumers International You, as a consumer, have a responsibility to have: Critical awareness – more questioning about the provision of quality goods and services. Involvement or action – consumers asserting themselves and acting to ensure they get a fair deal.

Social responsibility – awareness and sensitivity around the impact of your actions on other citizens and on prevailing economic and social realities. Ecological responsibility - heightened sensitivity of the impact of consumer decisions on the physical environment, with a focus on environmental conservation. Solidarity – using the power of numbers of citizen groups to attract attention to consumer interests. Report all unsatisfactory products or services to the nearest public regulatory body or consumer protection group such as African Consumers Find a full list of these groups at: http://www.consumersinternational.org. http://www.hg.org/consume.html www.AfricanConsumers.org

SMART BUSINESS 7 WAYS MOBILE HAS AFFECTED AFRICA! The Mobile phone is 40 years old this year - Believe it or not the first ever mobile phone call was made on April the 3rd 1973 when a senior engineer named Marty Cooper at Motorola called a colleague at a rival telecommunications firm and announced he was calling from a “real cellular telephone”

In 40 years, the industry has come a long way. The mobile phone has revolutionised the world, countries where land lines are a rarity can conduct business, a report shows that both Africa and India’s GDP has increased by 5% because of the mobile phone.

Marty Cooper – Man who invented the mobile phone.

In a world of 7 billion people, 6 billion own a mobile phone. It is estimated that by 2016 there will be a billion mobile phones on the continent of Africa alone.

A little over a decade ago there were about 100,000 phone lines in Nigeria, Today Nigeria has close to 100 million mobile phone lines, making it Africa’s largest telecoms market, according to statistics by the Nigerian Communications Commission.

AFRICAN CONSUMERS MAGAZINE |

Last October, for the first time ever, the number of Nigerians accessing the internet via their mobiles surpassed the number of desktop internet users, figures from Statcounter show.

The mobile phone is fast becoming a key advertising platform in Africa. For example, 47% of consumers confirm they use their smartphone to search for local information such as a local store they want to visit. 56% of us use our mobiles to sign into social media sites such as facebook and twitter. So tell me, do you have a mobile friendly website? If not, it’s time to make a change.

But, Be Careful……. It is generally agreed that using a hand-held mobile phone while driving is a distraction that brings risk of road traffic accidents. So we need to use hands free sets to avoid such hazards.

The potential impact of the kind of electromagnetic fields generated by cellular phones on the human brain has been a subject of debate recently.

THE DEATH OF THE PC

TECH TAKE

WILL THE HUMBLE PC EVER BECOME OBSOLETE?

Is the death of the PC imminent?

T

he days of paying for costly software upgrades are numbered. Sales of personal computers — including laptops and desktops — are at a record low. According to research firm IDC, global sales of PCs dropped 14% last quarter — nearly double what the analysts expected. Mobile has grown to take a significant portion of Web traffic, for example 56% of us use our mobiles to sign into social media sites such as facebook and twitter; and this number will continue to grow. It is fast becoming a key advertising platform in Africa. For example, 47% of consumers confirm they use their Smartphone to search for information such as a local stores and services. For web-browsing, Internet banking, word processing and presentations, we can see a move towards mobile devices and hence an overall PC sales decline. This can be exacerbated if file systems such as DropBox becomes more popular.Whereas plenty of

businesses in Europe see the importance of having a mobile-optimized site, however less than two percent of business websites in Africa are optimized for mobile systems, according to an estimate by technical experts. Do you have a mobile friendly website? If not, it’s time to make a change. Please contact our technical partners, Delta3 International on 0202 621 350 (www.Delta3.co)

WOEFUL SERVICE FOR AFRICA CONSUMERS

G

hana has been ranked as the country with the highest mobile broadband penetration in Africa, says a recent International Telecommunications Union (ITU) report.

viders get away with providing us such poor quality of services? Is it because most of us are not doing anything about it, but rather shrugging our shoulders and accepting to settle for less?

Today Nigeria has close to 100 million mobile phone lines, making it Africa’s largest telecoms market.

Together we can do something about it by voting with our feet and move our service to another service provider!

But are we getting good value for our money in Africa? Take the case of an SME that recently engaged the services of Vodafone Ghana for their Broadband service. Service installed on 1st June, no internet on the 4th. Took Vodafone 5 days to resolve the matter. Internet service down again on the 17th; this time it took another 5 days to resolve the issue. The SME promptly cancelled their contract with Vodafone and engaged another service provider. Millions of Africa Consumers are running out of patience with poor service quality among mobile phone operators.

Mobile Number Portability (MPN) allows you to move from one mobile service provider to another without changing your mobile phone number. It empowers you to terminate your relationship with your current network service provider if you are dissatisfied with the quality of services provided. To keep the discussion going, Like us on facebook www.facebook/whichafrica Follow us on Twitter

How do these providers get away with providing us such poor quality of services? Take the case of Michelle; she reported MTN keeps deducting her credits, even when she doesn’t use the phone! She’s still waiting for MTN to explain why this is the case! In late November, the Ghana telecoms regulator banned South African group MTN, Ghana’s most popular network with 11.7m subscribers, from selling new SIM cards because of call drops and deteriorating service. Why they lifted the ban is unknown to us as we have not noticed any improvement in service. But the Big question is: How do these proAFRICAN CONSUMERS MAGAZINE |

AUTO

CAR BUYING TIPS

B

uying a car is one of the biggest investments we can make in our lifetime; as such every care must be taken to avoid the potential pitfalls that come with such investment. To help our readers, Which Africa has compiled a checklist to assist you in your decision-making process. BEFORE YOU GO:

Decide on your budget and stick to it! It’s easy to get carried away and forget that you have school fees and the rent or mortgage to pay! Do your research about the type of vehicle you are interested in. Decide what car features and engine capacity you want. Check out vehicles with good resale value. Find out which banks offer competitive car financing. Make sure you are very clear about the terms and conditions of any financing and terms for repayments, especially what penalties will be incurred if the terms are broken or payments are late or missed Don’t be afraid to seek expert advice. It could save you money in the end and cost less than buying a car at an over-inflated price. AFRICAN CONSUMERS MAGAZINE |

32

AT THE DEALERSHIP / SELLER:

Don’t be afraid to take your time and ask all the necessary questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for a discount and negotiate for a better deal Check the advertised price doesn’t have hidden exclusions or additions. Check the terms and conditions of the dealer’s after-sales service. Check the model carries all standard specifications as advertised. Ask about the terms and conditions and the period of the warranty including any exclusions. Play safe and don’t commit until you are 100% sure

Whatever you’re looking for, don’t forget to indulge yourself. Visit the luxury dealers too. It might be the closest you’ll get to your dream car! AFRICAN CONSUMERS MAGAZINE |
