If Tim “Too Slim” www.tooslim.org Langford only played slide guitar, he would slither around most other blues guitarists and put a ferocious bite on their pride. As the sole six-string slinger, songwriter, and lead singer of the power trio Too Slim and the Taildraggers, he is a total force of nature, leaving musical tracks for others to try to follow. Now with 16 albums and countless gigs under his belt, he remains as untamed and menacing as ever.

CODY BEEBE & THE CROOKS Cody Beebe & The Crooks are a Northwest country staple and have been around the block a time or two, touring through 30 U.S. states and seven European countries. In the past two years, family and personal matters took them off codybeebeandthecrooks.com the road and out of the recording studio, but this summer, they geared back up to release new music. Known for their progressive-rock take on country music, they have found themselves playing Watershed at the Gorge twice, opening for notable acts all over the country, and even starting their own festival–Chinook Fest–as a result of pleasing their die-hard fan base. They’re excited to bring their signature sound and high-energy performance back to the PNW this summer.

THE DIP
Hailing from Seattle, The Dip is an electrifying seven-piece ensemble that melds vintage rhythm and blues and modern pop with “impeccably crafted, 60s-steeped soul” (KEXP). The group quickly gained notoriety for their eminently danceable live shows featuring the powerful vocals of Tom Eddy (Beat Connection), bolstered by the www.thedipmusic.com deep pocket of their unmistakably detailed rhythm section and the spirited melodies of The Honeynut Horns. They’re hard-hitting but sensitive. Whether young or old, you can’t help yourself from grinning ear-to-ear when you see these gentlemen hit the stage. I wouldn’t hold back dancing for that matter either! Ladies and gentleman, give it up for The Dip! Hit up the dance floor, and put it in your hip!

Locarno is the Latin project of JUNO Award-winning musician, Tom Landa. Like him, the music is equal parts Mexican and Canadian. Tom was born and raised in Mexico City and moved to Canada in his teens. In the mid 90s, he formed The Paperboys, a folk-roots band that has been touring world-wide for over 20 years. Tom has always dabbled in Latin music and in 2005 decided to immerse himself more into the genre, when he started working on material for an album. In 2006, he was awarded a Canada Council Grant to study traditional Mexican Music in Veracruz, Mexico. Tom spent his days learning the jarana (an 8-string guitar) and learning songs from the Son Jarocho repertoire. Upon his return to Canada, Tom started working on what would be Locarno’s debut CD.

WEAK SHEEP Native to Oak Harbor, Weak Sheep is a band of musician/songwriters whose songs aim to stay open about life, love, faith, and spirituality. Although Weak Sheep typically writes and performs music of the indie-folk flavor, lately, with the addition of a family band, Weak Sheep has been playing more of an indie-rock style of music. The blending of Marielle’s lyrical and raw style with the guys’ (Nehemiah, Nate, and Keagen) rhythm and rock has kicked up some older songs and given birth to some new ones.

HOT CLUB OF TROY
Inspired by the compositions of legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt, Hot Club of Troy plays acoustic jazz in the master’s style and instrumentation. A swinging rhythm supplied by acoustic guitar, clarinet, saxophone, and bass provides the foundation for the timeless beauty of Django’s melodies as played on his trademark Selmer guitar. This is lyrical, lively swing! Hot Club of Troy consists of Troy Chapman (guitar), Eric Vanderbilt-Mathews (clarinet, saxophone), Keith Bowers (guitar), and Kristi O’Donnell (bass).

Ben Union is the living, breathing definition of a modern classic. Union is a deliberate songwriter, his sonic libation adhering to the highest standards of a reckless night. His lyrics don’t sleep, and his rhythms are driving stolen wheels on a suspended license downhill toward a cliff. There are unmistakable flavors of R&B and soul, hints of reggae and funk, and a splash of low-end beats poured over a light serving of rock for refreshment. At the end of the night, you don’t care what’s in it; you know it tastes good and does its job every time. Because, as much as the three–who are all in their early 20s–have their heads screwed on and are fiercely intelligent people, they also want to let loose and enjoy being in a band. After all, that’s kind of what being in a band with your closest friends is all about.

A series of house-shows followed shortly thereafter. The Learning How to Swim EP is the debut release from Coach Phillips and was recorded at the Fitch/Nutt house with the help of former bassist and chicagobased recording engineer Justice Reed; the EP is characterized by guitar-driven songs which feature a mix of witty, romantic, and melancholic lyrics that tackle life’s numerous growing pains.

FREDDY & FRANCINE
To the casual observer, Freddy & Francine seem safely cemented as a folk duo. They’ve got the look and the soulful harmonies. They’re even getting married.
Freddy & Francine (their actual names are Lee Ferris and Bianca Caruso) aren’t interested in acting, genres, or talking or not talking about their relationship. They’ve done all that. They’ve recently left their longtime home of Los Angeles for Nashville. “We just want to play music all the time and we don’t care about the rest...” www.freddyandfrancine.com

THE GOTHARD SISTERS
The Gothard Sisters are a dynamic trio of sisters, whose impressive array of talents have set them apart as one of the most refreshing and compelling acts in Celtic-roots music today. The sisters’ unpredictable and theatrical flair brings a youthful splash to the time-honored tradition of Celtic folk music, bridging the gap between classical, folk, Celtic, world, and roots influences with a sunny, optimistic style that has been described as “beautifully arranged, melodicminded, Celtic folk-pop.”
