OAK HARBOR LIBRARY ANNOUNCES NEW HOURS To better meet the needs of library customers, Oak Harbor Library will change hours of operation starting June 5, 2011, opening at 9:00 am and closing at 8pm on weekdays. Weekend hours remain the same. Changes in open hours are based on public feedback and recent patterns of library use, and were developed with the goal of improving service to our community. This is not a reduction in hours; in fact we are adding one hour per week to the total. The library is open 7 days per week: Monday through Thursday 9 am-8 pm; Friday 9 am-5 pm; Saturday 10 am-5 pm and Sunday 1pm-5 pm.

The alarm rings early (6 am) for a 7 am breakfast and packing up to meet our Wenatchee River Rafting guides. We will enjoy over 20 miles of white water rafting. This is a Class III rated river... not overwhelming but guaranteed to provide a thrilling “float.” Afterwards a BBQ lunch will be served at Monitor before drying off and changing into bus riding attire for the trip home. Should be plenty of exciting chatter as we recount our exciting two days together.

Soap Suds the shortest distance “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”
By Roxann Dunn-Terry I knew it was an end of an era when I read: “ABC has canceled two of its longest-running daytime soap operas “All My Children” and “One Life to Live.” Both programs have been on the network’s daytime lineup for more than 40 years. Research into what today’s daytime viewers want and changing viewing patterns, ABC is evolving the face of daytime television shows. The replacement shows will focus on health and food. The move leaves “General Hospital” as ABC’s only daytime drama. Shevonne -- our resident soap opera junkie -- is literally crying in the back of our office right now.”
Soap operas have slowly been fading as a TV force, with many of the women who made up the target audience now in the work force. “I haven’t had a chance for anybody to physically assault me yet,” ABC’s President of Day Time Programming, Brian Frons said. “But if you’re a passionate viewer of these shows, you can assume people are going to be really angry at me.” Well, duh? Then I read; “Nobody disputes the fact that the audience for soap operas is aging and shrinking, and that soaps are becoming economically unfeasible to produce. But ABC’s canceling of two 40-year-old institutions with practically no notice was a tremendous jolt to an extremely loyal audience. There are probably no fans more loyal than soap fans. Many of them schedule their day around what they affectionately call “my shows,” and a lot of them have done that for a long time, and have developed a very personal relationship with the characters in these shows. So it should be no surprise that this news has caused a profound sense of loss and anger among those viewers who are really going to miss their daily dose of soaps. Soon remaining fans will have
to say goodbye to characters as familiar as family members.” I could feel Shevonne’s pain. I didn’t appreciate the “aging and shrinking”. Anger? No. Sense of loss? Characters as familiar as family members? Yes and yes. Growing up we knew the half hour that ‘As The World Turns’ was mom’s time. It better be about blood, death or fire if you were to disturb her. I, too, became a Soap Junkie. It started with ‘Dark Shadows’. I would rush home after school to watch Barnabas Collins and his fiendish plots. This was in the olden days before DVR’s. ‘Dark Shadows’ was my own show. Then came ‘All My Children’ and ‘One Life To Live’. I would have dropped out of school except dad threatened to throw out the TV. My teachers must have thought me a sickly child my senior year with all the school I missed. But hey, Phillip was being sent to Vietnam and didn’t know Tara was pregnant. Tara was told Phillip had been killed so Dr. Chuck Tyler married her to give her baby a name. What was she to do when Phillip was found and came home to find her married and with a baby? I tried the split personality thing, like Vickie on ‘One Life To Live’ but that only lasted a couple of days. I couldn’t keep what stories I told who straight. Mom informed me there never was an Evil Twin. She remembered quite well the day I was

I knew I was going over the edge when during family prayer, I asked that Luke and Laura would be protected while hiding. Mr. Volunteer looked at me and asked who Luke and Laura were? When I didn’t answer, it dawned on him, “Is this like when Mary got shot?” One day he found me and our two-year-old sitting on the couch crying our eyes out. He kept asking what was wrong, what happened? I quit crying long enough to tell him “Mary got shot. They killed her.” He panicked. “Who? Mary? What Mary?” I told him Jeff and Mary. He said, “I don’t know a Jeff and Mary. Who are they?” I quit crying long enough to tell him about Jeff and Mary. They were expecting a baby and two burglars broke into their home and shot and killed Mary. Mr. Volunteer thought I was talking about someone in the mother’s playgroup. When he finally realized I was talking about ‘All My Children’, he was ready to throw out the TV. When the actress who played Mary, showed up on the ‘L’Eggs commercial, he’d just look at me and say, “I see Mary isn’t dead. Yet”. Soap will never be the same.

The Home Health Care & Hospice of Whidbey General Hospital is seeking volunteers to visit with patients and families. Â Volunteers are trained by our staff and equipped for this rewarding work. Â The work may include providing respite for the caregiver, companionship for the patient, light housework and meal preparation, or running errands for the family. Meet Maria Chastain
Queen of Fun, Laughter and Happiness Maria Chastain rules the fun, laughter, and happiness at Harbor Tower Village!! When Maria is on the job as Lead Cook the atmosphere is as good as the food. You can hear her laughter throughout the whole community. Maria can turn an ordinary event into something special at the drop of a hat. Maria dances with the residents at happy hour, is the lead in the all birthday celebrations and is responsible for attracting a number of us to work at Harbor Tower-myself included (Ann Votava, Executive Director.) Maria and her husband, Kevin, moved from the Philippines to the United States in 1987. After two years in Missouri, they were stationed with the Navy in Japan for twelve years. Maria had her daughter Raean, last month’s care giver extraordinair, during their time in Japan. Maria and her family moved to Oak Harbor in 2001, where she mentored under Chef Brad Boyer. Maria’s favorite part of her job is the ability to infuse fun and laughter into the lives of the residents and employees. All of us at Harbor Tower Village feel privileged to call Maria a friend and coworker. Please feel free to stop by and meet Maria.
