For the 2.7 million annual visitors coming to Whistler for a season or a long weekend, it can be hard to understand. Who lives here and why?

hen asked about the secret behind building a booming bike shop and guiding operation in Whistler over the last decade, Matt Delany believes it ultimately comes down to one essential thing: It’s about understanding why you do what you do. For the team at Arbutus Routes, that’s easy. “We believe the best moments and experiences in life can be had on a bike and in exploring the mountains. I think we’re all really connected to that belief. This is why we do what we do,” says Delany. This summer, Delany will be opening the doors of his bike shop and guiding company at a new location in the Upper Village. The move solidifies Arbutus Routes’ position in Whistler with a message that this business is here to stay. In the past decade it has become “Whistler’s complete riding source.” There’s the rental side of the business, from road bikes to downhill bikes and everything in between; the workshop for repair and servicing; the retail component with bikes from Yeti; and the guiding and coaching, taking clients throughout the Sea to Sky corridor and beyond on customized trips. “We’re just so lucky to have the trail systems we have in our backyard – from the North Shore to the Chilcotins,” says Delany. “I would argue that it’s the best biking in the world.” Delany grew up with the North Shore Mountains as his biking backyard. Whistler was a familiar family playground, particularly in the winter for skiing. In 2004 he wrapped up his entrepreneurship degree at the University of Victoria with an internship with Whistler Outback Adventures. The owners, who were based in Arizona, were looking for a “local” to get their bike touring business off the ground. Four years in, Delany bought the business, later rebranding it to Arbutus Routes, and began making his home here with his young family. His entrepreneurial spirit is perhaps bred in the bone; his parents started Delany’s Coffee House almost 25 years ago. There are now five locations in Vancouver. Whistler, he says, is the perfect place to hone that kind of spirit and drive; the town was built on dreams, ideas, risks, and hard work. above. Summer is coming and it’s a race to the snowmelt. By the height of summer, the whiteness has been eclipsed by the rainbow of colour from the alpine wildflowers. The deep purple Fireweed and the pop of crimson from Indian paintbrush transform the alpine for an all-too-brief brief summer sensation. And that’s the trick: get up there for hiking and sightseeing when you can as the seasons change all too quickly. More of these activities in FAQ. Unlike the surrounding peaks, Whistler and Blackcomb bring the comforts of home to the top of the mountains — a cappuccino for that jolt of energy on your hike, a chilled gelato to keep the summer heat at bay, an exquisite lunch at Christine’s in the Rendezvous. o Davies remembers his first set of golf clubs — promotional freebies that came from filling up at the Chevron station in Brandon, Manitoba.

“I had this pieced-together set of irons and a Northwestern 5 wood and a bag that I was so proud of saving up my paper route money to buy,” recalls the sales manager at the Whistler Golf Club, who’s generally not hard to spot on the course in hot pink golf pants or perhaps neon green or even bright blue checks, depending on the mood. Davies’ golf game has come a long way since those Chevron clubs as he sells Whistler to the world as a premier golf destination — four courses in a spectacular mountain setting. The thing that really sets Whistler apart, he says, are the designer courses: Whistler Golf Club is an Arnold Palmer design, Nicklaus North is designed by “The Golden Bear” Jack Nicklaus, the Fairmont is a Robert Trent Jones Jr. and Big Sky in Pemberton is a Robert Cupp course. “Those names alone attract a very big audience,” says Davies. Davies moved to Whistler in 2002 — the job at the golf course brought him here but the mountains have kept him. It was an exciting time to be living and working in Whistler, particularly after Vancouver and Whistler won the bid to host the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. In that time, Whistler has gone from a relatively undiscovered golf destination to one of the all-time bucket list golf destinations in the world, marketed collectively as Golf Whistler, a gateway to the 330 courses around British Columbia. “Every hole on every course in Whistler has a different mountain view or lake view or both and it’s just unbelievable when you’re playing the courses around here: It doesn’t even matter how you hit it!” says Davies, adding that the altitude helps the ball go further. Now he can’t wait to experience Whistler through fresh new eyes — those of his young son, born in 2016.“I’m really excited for that next piece, of him going through ski school and keeping me young in the mountains.” In the meantime, he’s still on the hunt… for a really great pair of plus-fours.  RO’S PERFECT SUMMER DAY: Up early to catch the mist rising and the first tee time followed by lunch on a sunny patio. WHEN YOU PICTURE WHISTLER in the summertime, you generally think of big beefy bikes hurtling down the mountains or alpine hikes in the snow-capped peaks. But imagine this: meandering down a 5 km river, flowing around gentle bends, through wetlands, past beaver dens and alongside pretty riverbanks. This is the River of Golden Dreams and it is as much a Whistler experience as riding in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park and hiking in the mountains. The river flows from Alta Lake to Green Lake. It’s your choice how to navigate it: canoe, paddleboard, kayak. If a more solitary approach is your thing, there’s always an early morning paddleboard on one of Whistler’s five valley lakes, the mist burning off the water as the sun comes up over the mountains. Or get your adrenalin pumping as you fly through the forest on a zipline. The lakes, rivers and forests are a pivotal part of summer in the mountains. It’s a little known fact that the first commercial activity in Whistler was fishing. More than 100 years ago, the Rainbow Lodge opened for business, the first commercial fishing and weekend retreat in Whistler. It would become the most popular lodge west of the Rocky Mountains in its heyday. And take our insider Ro Davies, who sells Whistler’s golf experience to the world. Whistler, he says, has become a “bucket-list destination” for golfers, lured here for the courses but also for the whole Whistler experience. elcome to Whistler’s parks — not to be confused with the terrain parks, the skateboard park or the bike parks. Just your average, runof-the-mill parks. Except in Whistler, there’s nothing run-of-the mill about the local parks. There are 31 parks in town. Yes, that’s correct – 31 parks. That includes the little neighbourhood parks dotted throughout the valley as well as the big destination parks. This is where you’ll find the people of Whistler in the summertime when they’re not on the trails or on the mountains. There are endless things to do at the local parks — canoe, kayak, swim, walk the dog, hit the playgrounds, slackline (use the slackline posts, not the trees), chill, BBQ, picnic, beach volleyball, build a sandcastle, watch the sun rise, bask in the afternoon alpenglow. Like the locals, you’ll have your favourite park before too long. The Valley Trail can get you to most parks, by foot or by bike. The popular food truck program will be back again this summer, setting up at Rainbow Park and Lost Lake Park from July 1 to September 4. The local lakes are another hotspot in the summertime. There are five valley lakes: Green Lake, Alta Lake, Lost Lake, Alpha Lake, and Nita Lake. They may be chillier than you’re used to but don’t let that stop you! n Japan it’s called shinrin-yoku. It means “forest bathing.” Finding rejuvenating and restorative benefits to the body while being in the forest. To put it simply — getting out into the forest and the natural environment does the body good. Whistler knows all about this; hiking in our forests and our mountains is one of our favourite past-times, whether it’s a short walk in a forested area right on the edge of civilization or a long hike deep into the woods

The practice of Shinrin-yoku is associated with reduced blood pressure, reduced stress, improved mood, increased energy level and focus, and improved sleep. As if you needed another reason to get your hiking boots or your running shoes ready. There’s also every chance you’ll hear the whistle of the marmots or find an ancient green glacial lake in which to dip your weary toes. The fresh mountain air awaits, the vistas beckon, the old-growth forests stand ready. There are paths for everyone — easy routes for families like the trails in the Cheakamus Community Forest or in Lost Lake Park and more difficult climbs for those who want to get the lungs burning, like the hike to Rainbow Lake.  34

Skywalk

kywalk is still a secret! Though it’s been open since 2014, the trail remains relatively undiscovered, tucked above Alpine Meadows, one of Whistler’s neighbourhoods. It was built by volunteers, mostly from the Alpine Club of Canada, giving visitors and locals another hike on Rainbow Mountain on the west side of Whistler. What a gift to our community! This is a highalpine trail that takes you through old-growth forest into the subalpine and then leads you to, among other things, the beautiful Iceberg Lake and its shimmering, chilled turquoise waters nestled on the side of the mountain at the foot of the glacier. Once you get to the lake you see where Skywalk gets its name. We won’t spoil it by trying to describe it. The view from above is something that’s worth seeing for yourself. This hike is not for the faint of heart. It’s uphill for a few hours and it’s steep in sections. But every step is worth it. Think Shinrin-yoku while you’re up there — bathe in the beauty of the forest as you hike to the top. You’ll feel the difference when you get back down. You can return the way you came or keep going on Skywalk, north to Screaming Cat Lake and loop back. There are several loops and trails once you get up in the alpine. Do your research before you head out and keep your eyes peeled for the trail flags; it’s not as well marked as some of the other local trails. This is supernatural B.C. at its best. CHEAKAMUS LAKE This is an “easy” hike into a beautiful blue glacier-fed lake in Garibaldi Provincial Park. Arguably suitable for everyone. You can park at the trailhead and then it’s only three km without much elevation gain before you get your first glimpse of the lake. It’s another four km along the trail to get to Singing Creek. Cheakamus Lake is the jumping off points to the Black Tusk Meadows and to Helm Creek.

GARIBALDI LAKE Another must-do hike this summer to see the turquoise-coloured water of Garibaldi Lake in Garibaldi Provincial Park. It’s an intermediate hike, about five hours round trip for 18 km. The elevation gain is 820 metres. Don’t forget to bring your camera along with all the other essentials. This is a place you will want to capture forever.

WEDGEMOUNT LAKE Still in Garibaldi Provincial Park but further north now. Again, the reward is a sparkling alpine lake at the end, circled by Wedgemount and Armchair Glaciers. Wedge Mountain, with its distinctive flat peak that inspired the name, lies to the south. It is the highest peak in the provincial park at 2,891 metres. This is a 14 km roundtrip hike taking 8-10 hours with an elevation change of 1,200 metres. It’s a lung-burning slog to get there but well worth the effort. The last stretch involves a steep climb up a boulder field.

The big sign at the entrance on Alta Lake Road gives you some idea of the path ahead — 16 km round trip, six hours, elevation gain 850 metres. This is a great day hike up to Rainbow Lake. You’re on the west side of the valley on this hike and the views look back over town. You haven’t really seen Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains until you see them from this vantage point! It’s important to note that dogs are not allowed on this hike. This area is in Whistler’s watershed.

he world-record breaking numbers are perhaps the enticement to get you on the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola. Who doesn’t want to say they’ve taken a ride on the world’s longest unsupported lift of its kind — 3.024 km for the detailoriented among us. But the record-breaking stats fade away when you step inside the red gondolas for the ride across Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains. It all seems business as usual until the gondola passes that last tall lift tower cemented into the mountain (there are only four towers on the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola) and the long unsupported stretch high above the Fitzsimmons Valley below begins in earnest. Snow-capped peaks touching the sky stretch beyond every window. Below (436 metres below to be exact, making this the highest lift of its kind) is the coastal rainforest of the Fitzsimmons Valley. If ever you were trying to get a sense of the sheer magnitude and magnificence of Whistler Blackcomb, this is how you do it. The PEAK 2 PEAK is one part of the world’s longest continuous lift system — one gondola, one PEAK 2 PEAK, and two chairlifts. 

hough the bike park gets all the headlines, it’s not all about lift-accessed riding when it comes to two-wheels in Whistler. There is a valley of choice for those willing to pedal for their trails. Let’s begin by clearing up a few misconceptions. While Whistler has more than its fair share of double black techy trails — tough grinding climbs followed by rooty steep descents — there are options out there for those who want to take it at a different pace. You just have to know where to look. One of the most popular spots to cut your bars is in Lost Lake Park, five minutes from the village. The singletrack trails in Lost Lake are great at the beginning of the season or if you need to build some confidence — fun, intermediate challenges to get you out of your seat. And there’s something so poetic about riding trails called Toads of the Short Forest or Dinah-Moe Humm. Flip to the FAQ section at the back to find out how these Lost Lake trails got their names. On the south side of town, the Riverside trails are another alternative for family-friendly beginner and intermediate trails. Cruise through the forest beside the rushing Cheakamus River and get ready to explore and have some fun. When it’s time to just roll around, don’t miss out on the BMX track at Cheakamus Crossing and the various pump tracks and dirt jumps around town. The village bike park, located next to Fitzsimmons Creek (not to be confused with the Whistler Mountain Bike Park), is getting a facelift this year — new jump track, pump track, and skills areas. This is a great area to while away a few hours on a sunny summer’s afternoon. 

Lord of the Squirrels

t’s been three years. Three years of painstaking trail building from valley to alpine. Three years of moving rocks, cutting logs, shifting dirt. But by all accounts, from the first riders down at the end last summer, it has been well worth the wait.

It’s working name was the Alpine Dream Trail, which though not very creative, summed up the trail to a tee. It’s now known as Lord of the Squirrels and it will change the way we ride; this, after all, is what Whistler has been waiting for these many years. Depending on when the snow melts, Whistler is opening the alpine trail this summer. It’s located in the south end of town — an epic climb to the base of Sproatt Mountain followed by an equally epic descent down Lord of the Squirrels — a fast, fun, intermediate downhill. Everyone is talking about it. Those who have done it tell stories of their ride; those who have yet to do it are putting it on the top of their list this summer. The trail begins in Function Junction with a long climb to the alpine. At the top, there are spectacular views of the Whistler Valley stretching out below. This is deep in Whistler’s backcountry — wild and rugged, with civilization miles away. There are future plans to bring more trails to this area. Now, however, the way down is via Lord of the Squirrels which ends back in Function. The trick for this bike ride is: Be Prepared. Bring water. Bring lots of food. Bring an extra sweater or jacket for that alpine chill. Know where you’re going. Don’t ride alone. And find out for yourself if this trail is worthy of all the hype.   /faqwhistler

r. Clark Lewis, an emergency room doctor at the Whistler Health Care Centre, describes Whistler as “a town full of mutants.”

But he means it in the nicest way possible. “No matter how good you are when you come here, you’re probably pretty average (by Whistler standards),” says the Winnipeg transplant, of the bikers and the skiers who call Whistler home. “So it’s very humbling.” Lewis had never been on a mountain bike before heading into the Whistler Mountain Bike Park on his second day in B.C. It was 2003 and he was fresh out of medical school. Before lunch he was hooked. “I had no idea that existed,” he says. “I was aiming to be here to ski and ended up falling in love with mountain biking.” What was it that reeled him in? Lewis says it was exciting; it felt dangerous; sailing through the air on your bike feels like flying; and going fast is just fun. By day three in B.C. he had dropped $4,000 on a mountain bike and, every day thereafter he would ride the North Shore trails while working as a resident in Vancouver. You could say the transformation to mutant was beginning. Less than a decade later, Lewis had moved to Whistler full time, working at the Whistler Health Care Centre as an emergency room doctor, tending to the town’s residents and guests, the broken bones, the sick kids, the self-induced party fails. He got married along the way and started a family, Whistler an unexpectedly great place to raise kids. “There’s a baby boom going on in the background that you might not notice if you don’t have kids,” he says. This once self-described “park rat” doesn’t ride the park much any longer, not when there’s a whole valley of cross country trails to explore. “I really enjoy being in unfamiliar situations. I get bored doing the same thing over and over. Once I had the trails figured out, it felt more exciting to branch out and ride new stuff. And there’s so much to explore,” says Lewis. “I almost never ride the same trail twice in a year.” Just another Whistler mutant.  CLARK’S PERFECT SUMMER DAY: Getting up early with the girls, having breakfast with them, then a second breakfast with the boys for the Friday Chromag ride. It’s a different ride every week and it’s always a big pedal. End with a couple of beers and then dinner and a movie with my wife. 50

or people who know Whistler, getting around is a cinch. There’s one main highway through town. Whistler Village is in the centre of that highway and there are neighbourhoods to the north and the south. The only thing that could be simpler would be numbered streets! And yet, Whistler is a confusing, winding place and it can be easy to get lost. That’s where FAQ comes in handy. There are maps at the back and you’ll soon know the difference between Village North, the Upper Village, the Benchlands and Skiers’ Plaza. Use Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains as your guide — Whistler sits to the right, Blackcomb to left, both cradling the village. From the base of the mountains you can head closer to Blackcomb or take the opposite direction further away from Whistler Mountain. Let’s start with the former. Head over Fitzsimmons River and find your way to the Upper Village. During the Farmers’ Market on Sundays and Wednesday afternoons, the Upper Village is a hive of activity from kids adventure stations to fresh veggies from Pemberton to freshly-made gelato to keep you cool. The Upper Village is also home to the SquamishLil’wat Cultural Centre, well worth a visit to get to know Whistler’s first people. Carry on past the cultural centre to the new Audain Art Museum and spend some time getting lost in the art of this province. From 68

there, cross back over Blackcomb Way and you’ll find yourself in one of the main village hubs — Whistler Olympic Plaza. This is one of the legacies from the 2010 Winter Games. This is the spot for the free village concerts that take place at select times throughout the summer. Beyond the Village you’ll find mostly homes and condos where the locals live. There are some fun things out there too. At Nesters you can find everything you need for a picnic in the park. At Alpine, close to Meadow Park, you’ll find a little café with an old Whistler Mountain gondola in the parking lot. You can order fondue to the gondola. It’s the “Fondula.” Take our advice and get out there. The Valley Trail leads you almost everywhere and there is adventure waiting around every corner.  While it’s true FUNCTION JUNCTION is the home of Whistler’s back-of-house operations — its warehouses and its construction base — Function Junction is turning into an eclectic hub of resort life, a place worthy of any curious tourist. You’ll find an organic grocery story, art studios and galleries, friendly coffee shops, a ski and snowboard factory. You can get your hair done, drop off the kids at the trampoline facility, get homemade treats and take home some made-in-Whistler beer. ocal director Sharai Rewels readily admits that it’s ludicrous making a movie in three days.

But as crazy as it sounds, there’s something so magical about it. And challenging. So, once again, Rewels is back on set, taking part in another 72-Hour Filmmaker Showdown, part of the annual end-of-ski-season World Ski and Snowboard Festival. This time, however, she’s behind the camera rather than in front. “I didn’t think I could love anything as much as I loved acting because there’s an intrinsic process that happens when you’re so focused and something bubbles out of you creatively that surprises you,” she says. “I was always chasing the dragon, always trying to get that surprise. I found that through directing also.” Whistler would seem an odd choice then to chase the creative dragon. Not so, says Rewels. In fact, for more than a decade Whistler has a been a place where her talent has blossomed, acting in award-winning movies like her first 72-hour project Katch Up, as well as taking part in the annual Heavy Hitting Horror Fest and the Whistler Film Festival (WFF). Last year she won the Canon Hi5 Short Film Challenge at the WFF, taking home a $7,000 Canon camera. It’s the camera she used to shoot her latest 72-hour project, The Catch. “It was being in those contests as an amateur and watching the people that I admired and having the support from the community that allowed me to blossom into this,” says Rewels. “Whistler is known for its athletes but it’s got this amazing deep pool of talent for its artists...of all kinds.” When Rewels moved to Whistler at 20 years old, it felt like a homecoming of sorts. She grew up outside of Kimberley, B.C., learning to ski as soon as she could walk. She found kindred spirits here. “I came to Whistler and I had no idea who I was or what I wanted to be,” she admits. It would have been easy to get lost in Whistler’s infamous party trap. She’s seen Whistler chew people up and spit them out. And yet she was able to find ways to stay focused and content through her art. Along the way she found her husband, got married, bought a house near Anderson Lake. “Being here, pretty much growing up here, has been very formative in who I am now and has made me feel confident in being able to chase my dreams.” 

PERHAPS NOTHING sums up arts and culture in Whistler more than the movement afoot this year to honour the late Chili Thom. Chili Thom was a Whistler pioneer. A force to be reckoned with on canvas and on film. A creator. A visionary. A character. Thom passed away last year. He was only 40 years old. He left a legacy of work, much of it a reflection of Whistler. Whistler is now giving back some of the love to this local legend. In June, Arts Whistler is presenting The Chili Thom Experience. This three-week event is a celebration of Thom’s life and art throughout Whistler with exhibitions, performances and a showcase of Chili-inspired young artists’ work. The event speaks to the deep-rooted love in the community for arts and culture, an evolution these past 40 years, as Whistler has found and embraced its artistic voice. Chili Thom has been at the heart of that evolution.

Whistler is now giving back some of the love to this local legend. As Whistler celebrates its own icon, it’s also time to reflect on the first year of the new Audain Art Museum which raised the bar for arts and culture in Whistler to a whole new level. The museum is the story of B.C.’s art from its First Nations masks to its Emily Carr masterpieces. It is the private collection of Vancouver philanthropist Michael Audain and wife Yoshi Karasawa. This is one of the mustvisit things to do in Whistler — summer or winter. Spend some hours soaking in the art of Audain.  74

So, when long-time ski patroller Kathryn Shepherd started Lucia Gelato 10 years ago, learning her craft in Bologna, Italy and bringing it back to the Canadian mountains, Whistler embraced her frozen creations. It helped that this is what she was making: Banana Caramel Fudge, Blueberry Lemon, Chocolate Hazelnut Kiss, Salted Caramel, White Chocolate Lavender. And they all taste as good as they sound. “People are really excited for you starting a business,” she adds of the local community. “They want to help you and serve your product.” Lucia Gelato is available in close to 40 locations in Whistler and the rest of the Sea to Sky corridor. Shepherd landed in Whistler in 1992, supposedly for a season, while waiting for grant money for a forestry project at the University of Toronto. By the time the grant money was in, it was too late; Shepherd was hooked on the West Coast. She worked in a T-shirt shop, at various restaurants, in ski school at Whistler Blackcomb before landing a spot full-time on Blackcomb Ski Patrol where she would stay for the next 15 years. Lucia Gelato was born while on maternity leave with her daughter Lucy. And on a dare from her husband. “And I just started making it, with not really a business plan or any idea what I was doing,” she says. The gelato comes fresh every day from a small kitchen, rented from Whistler Blackcomb, and hand scooped into the 500ml containers for sale in the stores. Every year Shepherd is pushing the edge, trying new things, exploring various pairings, what works and what doesn’t. And the flavours are always up for discussion, pushed along in part from some of Whistler’s chefs looking for new and exciting things to tempt the taste buds. This, she says, was supposed to be a little hobby job at the farmers’ market in the summertime, a respite from the physical rigours of patrol. “I don’t know what happened, to tell you the truth,” she smiles. Perhaps the best pairing of all — Whistler and gelato. 

“S

ome days I feel like David Attenborough should be narrating my commute to work,” laughs Dena Caspick, of her daily journey to the top of the mountain where she hears the British naturalist in her mind, pointing out the black bears, the marmots, and the alpine robins. Caspick has been working as a server at Christine’s in the Rendezvous on Blackcomb Mountain for more than a decade, taking the chairlift to work every day; it’s a commute that never gets old, summer or winter. She’s also been known to ski down after her shift at Christine’s, jump on a snowmobile and head back to the alpine to the Crystal Hut to serve a fondue dinner. Or head over to the Roundhouse for a plated wedding dinner service. “I sleep in the slow seasons,” she says. “It’s the feast and famine of Whistler. You work when it’s here and enjoy not working when it’s not.” Work also gives her a chance to don her wigged alter egos. Some days it’s in the form of the black Pulp Fiction bob, other days it’s a long blonde Cinderella mane, and sometimes it’s the feathered Floridian housewife hair-do. Underneath her work wigs, however, Caspick is a rainbow of colour. Quite literally. At first it was just fire engine red bangs. Then it was wide popsicle purple streaks. The Northern Lights were her hair inspiration for a while. And now, because she loves all the colours, her real hair is a rainbow. In many ways, Caspick is quintessential Whistler — hard working with a laid-back zest for life. She remembers her fateful decision to move to Whistler, a place she grew up visiting throughout her childhood. In 2002, she was just finishing her degree in business and hospitality and tourism at La Trobe University in Australia and she called her mom back home in the Lower Mainland to share her plans. Her mom promptly said she would join her in Whistler too. This was the perfect place to put her schooling to work. But more than that, Whistler just felt like home — a place full of kindred spirits and lovers of the mountains. She adds: “The reason why I like this place is because you don’t have to climb the corporate ladder; you can take chair lifts and just enjoy.” 

DENA'S PERFECT SUMMER DAY: “If all the planets align and I could have my absolute perfect day — stand up paddle board yoga, a few turns on the glacier, squeeze in a Valley Trail bike ride, back to the lake to BBQ, and ideally finish with some live music in the village. And walking home in the sunrise is kind of nice too.

AS THE SUN STARTS TO DIP behind the mountains and the alpenglow lights up the peaks in its pinks and yellows and golds, Whistler gets its second wind. It’s called après. Once only associated with skiing, the old-fashioned après ski, as it was known, now applies to every activity. It is simply a celebration after a day of good fun in the mountains. And in Whistler, it’s ritual. It’s as much a part of the culture here as skiing and mountain biking. Often it’s those impromptu après sessions that go down as some of the best nights in memory. You know the ones we’re talking about — a quick beer after a bike ride that somehow ends eight hours later on the dance floor at Buffalo Bill’s. We don’t judge. We’ve all been there. So, take it from the locals: There are some rules for doing après right.

Après is just the beginning, the first course.

Make sure you spend some time on one of Whistler’s patios watching the world walk by. Find some good live music to get your toes tappin’. Don’t forget to order food. You’ll thank yourself in the morning. A plate of nachos is a trusty base. Don’t think twice about getting up on some furniture to dance, even if it’s only 7 p.m. and there are still kids around. Then brace yourself for the night ahead. Après is just the beginning, the first course. The main event is still to come. And it’s about to go off. The rest of the story, as they say, stays in Whistler.  96

opened more than 100 years ago but the skiing didn’t start until 51 years ago, in the winter of 1966. The Resort Municipality of Whistler was officially incorporated on Sept. 6, 1975. It was the first designated Resort Municipality in B.C.

A: Now you’re thinking like a local! A Toonie Ride is the weekly Thursday cross-country bike rides on select trails in the valley. It costs a toonie and you get an après with that too — a beer and a bite to eat. You need to be a member of WORCA, the local mountain biking club, to take part. That just involves signing up and paying the fee. Check out worca.com for the toonie schedule. There is no better way to get a sense of the local community as well as see some of the valley’s best trails.

faqs Q: How can I stay safe in bear country? A: It never hurts to sing a tune or whistle as you walk along the trails. It lets bears know you are near. All garbage must go into bear-proof containers. In Whistler, it’s the law. Bear-proof containers are located throughout the village, the municipal parks and the Valley Trail.

Q: What is the “little white wonder?” A: The “little white wonder” is the white bear cub spotted on Whistler Mountain last year. It is not a Spirit (Kermode) bear. Rather, scientists believe the unusual light coat is due to a double recessive mutation. Let’s hope this little cub made it through the winter. It’s a tough life for black bear cubs who have a 50/50 chance of survival in their first year.

Q: What is the significance of the big Inukshuks? And where are they all located? A: Traditionally, an Inukshuk is a First Nations symbol to identify significant landmarks in barren landscapes. In Whistler, they are a reminder of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games and they have become an unofficial symbol of Canada of sorts.  /faqwhistler

There is a giant Inukshuk on Village Gate Boulevard to welcome guests. This Inukshuk lights up with different colours in the evening. There is another at the Roundhouse on Whistler Mountain. And the highest Inukshuk sits at the top of the Peak Chair on Whistler. Great photos opportunities at all.

Q: Where do the singletrack trails in Lost Lake Park get their names? A: Gee I Like Your Pants, Dwarf Nebula, Disco Boy — The trails in Lost Lake Park have some awesome names. Trail builders, in their wisdom, decided to name the Lost Lake Trails after songs from the late great Frank Zappa. Who doesn’t want to grind through a trail called Dinah Moe Humm?

Q: Should I go swimming if I see a sign for swimmer’s itch? A: Don’t be alarmed. Swimmer’s itch is a temporary itchy rash caused by microscopic parasites passed between water fowl and certain snails. It is not related to the quality of the water. The resort municipality will post signs at 103

faqs the local beaches if there are reports of swimmer’s itch. It’s perfectly safe to swim but stay clear of weedy areas. Swimming off a dock will cut down on the risk. Also, wear waterproof sunscreen and towel off vigorously or take a shower immediately after leaving the water. There are outdoor showers at the local parks.

Q: What about something more serious than swimmer’s itch? A:There are walk-in clinics and doctors’ offices in Whistler. There is also the Whistler Health Care Centre, which has a fully-staffed emergency department. You can’t stay overnight but it is open until 10 p.m. There are doctors on call throughout the night.

Q: When are the free concerts at Celebration Plaza? A: There are free outdoor concerts throughout the summer. Check out the Events section at the front of FAQ. Over select summer weekends you can head to Celebration Plaza and check out the live music. At the beginning of July, for example, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will be playing once again with the mountains as backdrop. And… it’s free.

Q: What is the Chili Thom experience all about? A: The late Chili Thom is one of Whistler’s most revered artists. You can find his distinctive work throughout town. Read more in the Arts section of FAQ. There is a special Chili Thom Experience throughout June honouring the artist. In particular, there is a three-week show at the Audain Art Musuem.

Q: Any changes to the Whistler Mountain Bike Park this summer? A: Big changes are afoot! If all the approvals fall into place, the Whistler Mountain Bike Park will be kicking off a major expansion in the Creekside area with approximately 14 km of new trails. WB is also working on a Suspension Bridge at the Peak Chair, including a cantilevered deck facing northwest. Summers are looking even bigger and brighter!
