e gift of a

Sea to Sky

XPERIENCE Some gifts you hold in your hearts, not in your hands. By WILL JOHNSON

T

When people think back on holidays past, it’s often the shared experiences with loved ones that they remember most vividly—a brisk winter walk, maybe, or playing board games with family until late at night. These are the experiences that make a lasting impact in your psyche, and bring people closer together. And as the gift-giving season approaches, there are plenty of opportunities to create memories with the people you love in the Sea to Sky Corridor. “I love the concept of giving activities or experiences as gifts personally, and the Squamish area is such a great place for that. We have kid-centric activities like the Rope Runner Aerial Adventure Park or the kids’ programming at the Britannia Mine Museum, and who doesn’t love the gift of ice cream from our popular Alice + Brohm creamery?” said Shawna Lang, manager of destination marketing and member engagement with Tourism Squamish. “It’s about giving the gift of time to your family, because we don’t always have that, and it creates memories that you can’t put a price on. In my family, we do a Christmas draw where you enjoy an experience rather than giving a gift, and it can be anything from going to the theatre or doing winemaking to getting your nails done together.” For thrill-seeking kids, a future-ticket to the Rope Runner Aerial Adventure Park— which is open spring through fall—is sure to give them the adrenaline kick they’re looking for. Opened in 2017, it gives them the opportunity to dangle 18 metres (60 feet) in the air while navigating an intricate ropes course. Safely harnessed in, it’s the perfect experience to share with a group of friends or your family. And once you’re finished, Squamish is full of local eateries to serve the famished

Just outside Squamish there are other winter adventures to gift, such as at Callaghan Country and Whistler Olympic Park.

kids. They can check out Fergie’s Cafe, the Crabapple Cafe or White Spot—then follow it up with doughnuts from Fox and Oak or ice cream from Alice + Brohm. Lang feels the Squamish area is the perfect place for this sort of gift-giving because there is such a wealth of local winter attractions. Whether you give someone tickets to the Sea to Sky Gondola, take them to the Whistler Olympic Park or maybe even share a flight with them over the mountains, you’re creating lasting memories that will last long after the final present is open. In the case of the Britannia Mine Museum, which was revitalized and opened in 2010, it gives visitors the opportunity to learn about over 100 years of history. During its operation over 60,000 people lived and worked there, making it one of the largest copper mines in the world. Taking a loved one or a group of kids to experience it could fill up an entire day, with a break to dig into a hearty picnic from Peak Provisions Mountain Grocery and Goods. Meanwhile, the gondola is not only a scenic adventure, transporting visitors high over the trees, it also gives you

the opportunity to take in the local landscape and escape the rainy weather of the lower elevations. With live music events, a cosy lodge, and plenty of tracks to go crosscountry skiing or snow tubing, there are multiple ways to fill up your family’s day with fun and wonder. But it isn’t just families who can enjoy this kind of gift-giving, PHOTO COURTESY OF TOURISM SQUAMISH

Britannia Mine Museum offers hours and hours of fun for the whole family.

One fun option for an experience gift is to hire a local photographer to take your loved one to a Sea to Sky provincial park (such as Alice Lake) for a winter photo shoot.

according to Lang. The area is also ripe with potential experiences to share with new romantic partners, or your lifelong spouse. Whether you’re looking for a pulse-quickening adventure or just a intimate meal, Squamish offers plenty of opportunities to grow closer to the significant other in your life. “For couples, we have exciting romantic activities like taking a Blackcomb helicopter tour. We have lots of amazing hikes and picnic spots, where you can stock up at our local grocery store and then take in a beautiful vistas,” Lang said. “People in this area like to work hard and use a lot of energy, going off on adventures, but we also like to indulge in our breweries, distilleries, and doughnut shops. When you work hard, you want to reward yourself and lots of people may come here for rock climbing or mountain biking and then afterwards enjoy a really nice dinner at a high-end restaurant like the Salted Vine.” Lang notes that the corridor is a relatively small area that happens to contain eight provincial parks and that all the epic wilderness can be experienced for free. But adding an additional element, such as bringing a professional photographer along on a hike to see Shannon Falls or Alice Lake, can make that experience extra special. Or you could surprise your family with a multi-generational party, renting out a local venue and decking it out with seasonal decorations.

When it comes to snow sports, you could consider giving the gift of snowshoeing, tubing, cross-country skiing and even snowmobiling. Local company No Limits Motorsports rents out their sleds, which are meant to be operated in deep snow off-track and offer to knock off the rental cost if you ultimately decide to purchase one. Renters can also pick up a trailer, giving them easy access to all the lush wilderness throughout the Sea to Sky Corridor. Using a snowmobile to transport you to an otherwise inaccessible spot, you can plan everything from a snowy picnic to an elaborate marriage proposal, and bringing along a camera is a great way to make sure the memories are immortalized. “In Squamish, we’re well known for our hardcore outdoor activities, but there’s so much more to offer—from soft to hard adventure and everything in between. We have amazing food and beverages, and everything from free to paid attractions. Sometimes people forget what a wide breadth of experiences we have here, and any one of those could be turned into a gift,” Lang said. For more ideas, Tourism Squamish keeps a list of local attractions at exploresquamish.com.

Six Reasons

to buy local

The holiday season is an ideal time to support the businesses in Squamish. Here are six ways to make buying local a part of your Christmas celebrations. 1. Gift giving

4. Food

If you plan to participate in a holiday gift exchange with coworkers, friends or family members, take this opportunity to introduce them to local merchants. For example, locally made body care products, handcrafted jewelry and artisanal foods make great gifts.

If you’re whipping up a homemade meal for your holiday guests, plan your menu around seasonal and local products. If you’d rather take a break from cooking, hire a local caterer or provider who uses regional goods. Don’t forget to purchase dessert from a nearby pastry shop or bakery.

2. Alcoholic beverages Alcoholic beverages and the holiday season go hand in hand. This year, serve beers and ciders brewed in Squamish, and spirits distilled nearby. To add to the fun and sample an assortment of products, consider organizing a tasting event at your next holiday party.

5. Clothing Create head-turning holiday outfits by shopping at local clothing stores. Whether it’s brand new or gently used, high fashion or Lumberjack chic, Squamish has it all.

3. Personal wellness products

6. Decorations

Entice your guests to buy local products themselves by placing a handmade bar of soap in the bathroom, lighting locally crafted candles or providing an all-natural hand cream to relieve dry hands.

Spruce up your holiday decor with unique, locally crafted items. Wreaths, vases, sculptures and other handmade treasures are sure to infuse your home or office with the Christmas spirit. This holiday season, be sure to boost your community’s economy by supporting your local businesses.

KOREAN BEEF BULGOGI Thinly sliced beef : 150-200g Cabbage (thinly sliced): 50g Onion (thinly sliced): 35g Carrot (julienned): 25g Button mushrooms (sliced): 25g Bulgogi Marinade (See recipe)

HARU SALAD DRESSING Apples: 100g Carrots: 50g Onion: 40g Garlic: 15g Olive Oil: 200ml Apple Cider Vinegar: 75ml Ketchup: 65g Soy Sauce: 8ml *Sugar: Optional BULGOGI MARINADE:

blender. If you prefer a slightly sweeter dressing, you can also add sugar at this point.

Prepare the onion, pear, and garlic by peeling, slicing, and then blending or grating them in a mixer or blender until you get a smooth paste. In a bowl, combine the blended onion, pear, and garlic with soy sauce, mirin, and water. Stir in the sugar and black pepper powder, adjusting the sugar amount to your preferred level of sweetness. You can add more or less to taste. Mix all the ingredients well until the sugar is fully dissolved and the marinade is well combined. Your Bulgogi marinade is now ready to use.

Blend all the ingredients in the blender for an additional minute or until the dressing is fully mixed and smooth.

Place the thinly sliced beef in a bowl and generously coat it with the Bulgogi Marinade. Ensure the beef is well covered. Allow the marinated beef to rest for at least 30 minutes, but for the best flavor, marinate it for several hours or overnight in the refrigerator.

Transfer the dressing to a 1-liter container with an airtight lid. Store it in the refrigerator for at least 3 days before using. This aging process will allow the flavors to meld and develop, resulting in a well-aged and flavorful dressing. After three days, your dressing will be ready to use. Drizzle it over your favorite salads and savor the taste of the well-aged, creamy dressing. You can feel the difference!

KOREAN BEEF BULGOGI:

In a blender, combine the cleaned apples, carrots, onion, and garlic. Blend them together until you achieve a smooth consistency. This step will give the dressing a fresh and creamy texture.

In a large skillet or wok, heat it over high heat until it’s very hot. Add the marinated beef and stirfry it quickly, about 2-3 minutes, or until it’s tender and cooked to your liking. The high heat will help caramelize the meat and seal in the flavors. Add the thinly sliced cabbage, onion, julienned carrot, and sliced button mushrooms to the pan with the cooked beef. Continue to stir-fry for an additional 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are slightly softened, and their juices combine with the rich meat flavors. Pour any remaining Bulgogi Marinade over the meat and vegetables. Stir well to ensure everything is coated and the flavors meld together.

With the blender running, gradually add the olive oil to the apple and vegetable mixture. Continue blending until the oil is fully incorporated, and the dressing becomes creamy and well combined.

For an alternative twist, you can add cooked udon noodles to the pan with the meat and vegetables. Stir to combine and let the udon soak up the delicious sauce. Plate your Korean Beef Bulgogi and enjoy it hot, served over steamed rice or udon noodles.

Add the apple cider vinegar, ketchup, and soy sauce to the creamy mixture in the

Serve with a side of green salad or cabbage salad topped with our Haru Salad Dressing.

HARU SALAD DRESSING Ensure the apples and vegetables are thoroughly cleaned and peeled (if desired). Remove any seeds or cores from the apples.

RECIPES

Tiramisu Liquid

We’ve got our cocktail ready!! It’s a Liquid Tiramisu: Prepare some melted chocolate. We like Squamish’s Schoki Nicaragua Dark 85% In a shaker with ice, mix 1 oz Barrel Aged Gin from Raincity Distillery, 1 oz Baileys, 1 oz Kahlua, 1 egg yolk, and 3/4 oz heavy cream The following are optional/adjustable, but elevate the cocktail a lot: add two twists of ground black pepper, 1 small pinch sea salt, 1/8 tsp turmeric powder, a delicious amount of grated nutmeg and cinnamon, and 1 tbsp of crumbled shortbread

Shake it harder than usual for about 30 seconds Drizzle the melted chocolate all over the inside of a glass Then dirty pour (with all the smashed ice), garnish it with shaved chocolate and serve it with a metal straw Get creative with it! If you want it to make it even more like a tiramisu, try incorporating 1/2 tbsp mascarpone cheese and a splash of Marsala wine.

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus Wow! Mommy’s kissing Santa Claus!

Walkin’ In A Winter Wonderland

I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus (kissing, kissing Santa Claus)

Sleigh-bells ring, are you list’nin’?

Underneath the mistletoe last night

In the lane, snow is glist’nin’.

She didn’t see me creep

A beautiful sight,

Down the stairs to have a peep

we’re happy tonight,

She thought that I was tucked up

wonderland.

Later on, we’ll conspire

In the meadow we can

As we dream by the fire,

build a snowman

To face unafraid,

Then pretend that he is

the plans that we’ve made

Parson Brown.

Walkin’ in a winter wonderland.

In my bedroom, fast asleep

Walkin’ in a winter wonderland.

Then I saw Mommy tickle Santa Claus (tickle, tickle, Santa Claus)

Gone away is the bluebird,

We’ll say, “No, man.

Underneath his beard so snowy white

Here to stay is a new bird.

“But you can do the job

Oh, what a laugh it would have been

He sings a love song

while you’re in town!”

If daddy had only seen

as we go along,

Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night

Walkin’ in a winter

He’ll say, “Are you married?”

He saw Mommy kissing (kissing, kissing) Santa Claus I did! I really did see Mommy kissing Santa Claus And I’m gonna tell my dad

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock

Then I saw Mommy tickle Santa Claus (tickle, tickle Santa Claus) Underneath his beard so snowy white Oh, what a laugh it would have been

The Jingle Bell Rock Jingle bells swing and jingle bells ring Snowin’ and blowin’ up bushels of fun

12 Days of Christmas

Now the jingle hop has begun

A Partridge in a Pear Tree

Dancin’ and prancin’ in Jingle Bell Square

Two Turtle Doves

In the frosty air

Three French Hens

What a bright time, it’s the right time

Four Calling Birds

To rock the night away

Five Golden Rings

Jingle bell time is a swell time

Six Geese a Laying

To go glidin’ in a one-horse sleigh

Seven Swans a Swimming

Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your feet

Eight Maids a Milking

Jingle around the clock

Nine Ladies Dancing

Mix and a-mingle in the jinglin’ feet

Ten Lords a Leaping

That’s the jingle bell rock

Eleven Pipers Piping

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock

Oh the weather outside is frightful

Twelve Drummers Drumming

Jingle bell chime in jingle bell time

But the fire is so delightful

On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me...

Dancin’ and prancin’ in Jingle Bell Square

And since we've no place to go

A Partridge in a Pear Tree

In the frosty air

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me...

What a bright time, it’s the right time

It doesn't show signs of stopping

Two Turtle Doves and a Partridge in a Pear Tree

To rock the night away

If daddy had only seen Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night Oh, what a laugh it would have been If daddy had only seen Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night I did! I did! I really did see Mommy kissing Santa Claus You gotta believe me! You just gotta believe me! Come on, fellas, believe me! You just gotta believe me! Come on, you gotta believe me!

Let it Snow

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time

And I've bought some corn for popping

Jingle bell time is a swell time

The lights are turned way down low

Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your feet

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

Jingle around the clock

When we finally kiss good night

Mix and a-mingle in the jinglin’ feet

How I'll hate going out in the storm!

That’s the jingle bell

But if you'll really hold me tight

That’s the jingle bell

All the way home I'll be warm

That’s the jingle bell rock

To go glidin’ in a one-horse sleigh

The fire is slowly dying And, my dear, we're still goodbying But as long as you love me so Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
