It’s times like these that increased isolation and minimal interaction with friends and family have the largest impact on our well-being. The team at Shannon Falls Retirement Residence have been working hard to adapt our services, and keep our community safe and clean. And most importantly – creatively connected to one another. 24/7 staff and security means someone is always available; peace of mind for you and your family.

Garbage totes and the blue-lid recycling totes are collected on alternating weeks. MAYOR & COUNCILLORS
The name Squamish is an English adaptation of the Squamish Nation word Skwxuwu7mesh, meaning Mother of Winds. Squamish Nation members are descendants of the Coast Salish Aboriginal people who have lived in this area since before recorded time. European settlers first arrived in 1888 and began to establish a farming community. The early 1900s brought the railway to town and, by 1914, the Squamish town site (today’s downtown) was considered complete. While 1914 also saw the passing of the Squamish Incorporation Act, a local government did not exist until 1948 with the creation of a three-member village commission. By then the focus of the local economy had moved from hop farming to forestry, with the railroad still occupying a prominent position. In 1964, the Village of Squamish amalgamated with Brackendale and Mamquam to create the District Municipality of Squamish and begin the modern day government. Fast-forward to 2019 and the District of Squamish is now home to one of British Columbia’s fastest growing and youngest populations. With a population of 19,893 (2016 census), Squamish is attracting independent thinkers, innovators and creative professionals drawn here for the world-class outdoor recreation, literally minutes from any back door in Squamish. The District of Squamish offers services and amenities to meet the demands of this changing and growing population. From public works, engineering, building and development services, to recreation services, parks, trails, and economic development, the District provides a growing list of services to help plan for and manage the rapid growth and opportunities

REGIONAL GOVERNMENT The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) is a local government federation consisting of four member municipalities (District of Squamish, Resort Municipality of Whistler, Village of Pemberton and District of Lillooet) and four unincorporated rural Electoral Areas (A, B, C and D). Around the Squamish area, SLRD Electoral Area D includes the Howe Sound communities of Porteau Cove, Furry Creek and Britannia Beach, the rural neighbourhoods of Ring Creek, the Upper Squamish Valley and Paradise Valley as well as Pinecrest Estates and Black Tusk Village. Found within the traditional territories of the Squamish, Líl'wat and St'át'imc Nations, the SLRD delivers a range of local, sub-regional and regional services to approximately 42,665 residents. Regional Districts are a governance structure unique to British Columbia, established to provide governance and decision-making for unincorporated (rural) areas, shared local government services as well as a forum for regional collaboration and decision-making. The SLRD is governed by a 10 member Board of Directors composed of six municipal directors (one director from Lillooet and Pemberton; two directors from each of Squamish and Whistler) and four Electoral Area Directors. Municipal directors are appointed by their respective municipal council, and electoral area directors are elected directly by their constituents. Local government elections are held every four years. At the centre of the region is Pemberton, which is where the SLRD's headquarters is located. SLRD board meetings are generally held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m. in the boardroom at its headquarters at 1350 Aster St. Members of the public are welcome. To learn more, visit www.slrd.bc.ca.

areas and estuaries. Making nature an important part of our town can help ensure a healthy community for all of us, including wildlife. Our programs offer opportunities to enjoy nature and to contribute to preserving and enhancing our environment. ESTUARY BIRD COUNT: Novice to expert birders are welcome for a half day of birding followed by lunch. Counts are usually held on the second Sunday of every month. Meet at the Brew Pub and then come out for a pleasant morning walk. Have your bird questions answered, meet knowledgeable birders, and get to know the Estuary. This group’s activity over the last twenty-five years or so has resulted in Squamish having the best set of bird statistics in BC. Bird counts are a wonderful way to get to know the Estuary and fellow nature lovers. EAGLEWATCH PROGRAM: For more than 23 years, our volunteer interpreters have been on Eagle Run dike every winter when eagles return to feed on salmon. The program runs on weekends from mid-November until the eagles leave in January as well as during Christmas Week, welcoming visitors and helping to educate the public about eagles. Throughout the fall and winter volunteers visit schools and community groups to conduct presentations, and also welcome groups to Eagle Run dike on a scheduled basis. Volunteers welcome: no experience required. A great way to meet other volunteers and help promote awareness of the importance of our environment. EAGLE COUNT: SES organizes the annual Brackendale Eagle Count, which takes place on the first Sunday after New Year’s. Volunteers are given special training to help conduct the count., which has been taking place for more than 33 years. DISCOVERY WALKS: These outings generally take place the last Sunday of the month. Activities range from gentle walks to more strenuous hikes and explorations, all led by volunteers and offered free of charge. CITIZEN SCIENCE: This growing field is scientific research conducted, in whole or in part, by amateur scientists. SES encourages and supports those interested in research to better understand the ecology of the Squamish Valley or to promote recovery of habitat and species. A dozen projects are currently underway and many offer opportunities for volunteers. Please go to the SES website and Facebook for more details on current happenings.

‘WildSafeBC is a program that is designed to reduce human-wildlife conflicts. It was developed by the BC Conservation Foundation and is a direct descendant of the successful Bear Aware program. Our motto of “keeping wildlife wild and communities safe” underscores our belief that if we can keep wildlife living in the wild we can, in turn, make our communities safer for us and at the same time keep wildlife from coming to harm. Reducing human-wildlife conflicts is accomplished by providing information about attractant management and providing education and assistance about the tools available to secure those attractants. WildSafe BC offers presentations for schools, organizations and community groups focusing on wildlife biology and behavior along with attractant management information and how residents can live and recreate safely within wildlife country.
Provides child protection services, fostering and adoption for children and youths, mental health programs and youth probation services.
