There’s no business like snow business: World snow sculptors return to Stillwater BY MADELINE DOLBY STAFF WRITER

PHOTOS CONTRIBUTED

The World Sculpting Championship will take place in Lowell Park, located on the banks of the St. Croix River.

Team House of Thune, from Minnesota, is the returning champion.

Water Street Inn will host an Indoor Winter Market from Jan. 19 to Jan. 21. Novelty items will be sold.

The World Snow Sculpting Championship will take place from Wednesday to Sunday, Jan.17-21.

World Snow Sculpting Championship event highlights:

Twelve teams from eight different countries around the world will turn blocks of snow into artwork.

will officially kick off the Stillwater event at the JX Event Center. The opening ceremony gives attendees a behind-the-scenes look at how this world-class event comes together and an opportunity to learn more about the sculptures, meet the teams and get an overview of the competition. The teams will work on their sculptures for the entirety of Friday in Lowell Park. By 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, Jan. 20, the teams will have turned their blocks of snow and ice into

sculpted masterpieces. After the completion of the competition, judging begins. “The teams actually judge among themselves who has the best sculpture,” said Jensen. “The winner is picked, and we have a closing ceremony, award ceremony.” The ceremony follows the judging, and is a big deal. For the third year in a row, Lowell Park in Stillwater will feature wondrous and extremely detailed ice sculptures created from blocks of compacted snow and ice. Twelve teams from eight different countries around the world will put their creativity to the test during the World Snow Sculpting Championship. They will compete for prize money and the title of World Champion. Winners from sculpting competitions around the world qualify to make it to the championships located along the banks of the St. Croix. The event is hosted by the Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the city of Stillwater. The chamber had rights to the event for three years. After the growing popularity of the event, the chamber has decided to continue to host the World Sculpting Championship for years to come. This year, the World Snow Sculpting Championship will take place from Wednesday to Sunday, Jan.17-21. “Every year just gets better and better,” said Stacie Jensen, Stillwater Chamber of Commerce communications director. “This third year, we have definitely learned a lot.” Before the sculpting begins, the chamber has to make the snow and form it into blocks that are 10 feet on each side. On the Monday leading up to the event, Afton Alps personnel bring clean, fresh snow to be created into these forms and help get the snow to where the sculptors need it to be. The packing of snow into the forms is an event in itself. The sculpting will begin at 9 a.m. on Jan. 17 with the “Tools Up” event. Teams will start carving their 1,000-cubic-foot blocks of ice and snow. At 4:30 p.m., there will be an opening ceremony that

How my first semester went

recently graduated from the University of St. Thomas in May of 2023. I had made the bold, and very ambitious, decision to apply for graduate school right at the end of March. A few of my professors were a bit worried about me getting in, considering applications were due by the start of April. Nonetheless, I was determined to get in somewhere. I skipped past the schools with hard deadlines that had already passed for fall 2023 and put my focus on schools that accepted rolling admissions. I applied to the University of St. Thomas — and only the University of St. Thomas. After meeting with the graduate coordinator, he believed that I would be a good fit for the creative writing, editing and publishing program they offered to graduate students. My dream career Madeline is to become a publishing editor. I Dolby want to work with my own authors, have an office in the cities and be surrounded by books till I retire. After applying, it took two weeks for them to review my application. I got the acceptance email from the graduate coordinator on a Wednesday night. My eyes were as big as saucers as I read the “Congratulations” at the top of the page. I took two classes for the fall semester. One was documentary poetics and the other was an introductory course to English studies. They were both three hours long from 6-9 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays. After work, I would drive down to campus, go to class, drive back and do it all over again each week. If I am going to be honest, balancing school, a fulltime job and a social life has been almost impossible. Most of my weekends are spent in my bedroom, hunched over my desk, writing yet another 500–750word paper about the poetry book I had read for my documentary poetics class, or writing a research paper regarding different literary lenses for my introduction class. As the semester ramped up, so did my coursework and I began to question if I was doing the right thing. I never saw my friends, I spent my whole weekend writing and I felt the burnout slowly approaching. The end of the semester came quickly, and I found myself faced with two 30-page final papers. You could only imagine the stress I was feeling. I spent the majority of my lunch breaks during the months of November and December writing as much as I could in the time that I had. Luckily, I finished both papers without a glitch. Thankfully, I have the month of January off to decompress. Next semester, which starts in February, I am taking two classes again. One is a writing fiction workshop and the other is a diversity in literature class. I am excited for more opportunities to expand my knowledge of the literature world and myself as a writer. I felt the pressure of graduate school those last two months. My laptop keys are slowly wearing down, a few letters are even popping off from all the writing I have been doing. But I wouldn’t change it for anything. I have a goal and I am determined to achieve it.

Fly high Frosty

nd just like that she’s gone and I’m left here trying to figure out how I go on with a huge piece of me gone. I’ve mentioned her in quite a few of my columns, most recently in the column “My first child.” I’m talking about my first dog, Frosty, who crossed the rainbow bridge last week at the age of 10. She was a white German shepherd. Around a year ago, she was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy (DM), which is disease that affects the spinal cord, resulting slowly Shannon’s in progressive hind Shenanigans limb weakness and paralysis. Shannon DM is similar to some of the forms Granholm of human ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. We didn’t know how long we would have her, but hoped we would get a couple more years, but the disease progressed way faster than we thought it would. It was my goal to get her to her 10th birthday, and thankfully we did. But then it turned to Christmas … I realized that it would just keep changing. New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, summer, my birthday and before you know it her next birthday. I always knew once the disease spread to her front legs, or she needed a catheter to go to the

bathroom her quality of life would be poor enough that I would have to let her go. Everyone kept saying, “She will tell you when she is ready,” or “You will know when the right time is” to make the decision to let her go. Frosty never really told me she was ready, and I don’t know if she was. I’d say the moment I knew I had to stop being selfish and let her go was when she had an accident in the house. We carried her into the bathroom to get her cleaned up, and then she had another accident while in the tub. The sores on her feet kept getting bigger (from dragging around). I didn’t want her to have to experience a traumatic ending, and DM always ends traumatically because it eventually affects their breathing. So, I somehow mustered up the courage to make the call that no pet owner ever wants to make and scheduled her in-home euthanasia. The week leading up to it was horrendous. I kept thinking, “this is the last time …” This is the last time I will see her at the foot of our bed. This is the last time I will see her snuggled up next to her sister Twinkie. This is the last time I will get to take a photo of her with my son Royce. I have never experienced anticipatory grief like that before. I was determined to give her the best last day possible and make sure she knew how loved she was. The night before she got to enjoy a steak dinner, and then the next day for breakfast she had a giant treat and puppy latte. She even got to try a cheeseburger. She played

with her favorite toy (her “fluffy.”) Right before her appointment, we went on our last walk/wheel together. She had some peanut butter and went to sleep right in my arms. I sobbed before, during and after and still can’t wrap my head around the fact that she is gone. The only pain I can compare this to is when I lost my dad right before Christmas eight years ago. Frosty touched so many lives. When she left, she took a piece of me with her. She traded in her wheels for her wings. I will take on this pain so that she doesn’t have to. Fly high my sweet Frosty. You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten. Play some fetch with dad for me. Shannon Granholm is the Managing Editor at Press Publications.

Stillwater PGA Golf Pro joins a new club BY MADELINE DOLBY STAFF WRITER

After spending four years at the Stillwater Country Club as the PGA Golf Pro, Brent Heit is making the switch to the North Oaks Country Club. “My first job in the golf industry was at age 12 at Clifton Hollow, I worked on the grounds crew,” said Heit. Clifton Hollow is a golf club located in River Falls, Wisconsin where Heit grew up. Over time, he slowly worked his way up to working in the pro shop. Heit began playing golf when he was only eight years old. His father started taking him and his two older brothers to the golf course near their home. He attended Ferris State University, where he was planning to major in Golf Management before transferring to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside located in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he played Division 2 golf. He got a marketing degree before getting a job at Hillcrest Golf Club, now known as The Heights, in St. Paul where he worked for over twenty years. “I started there as an assistant, a teaching professional, then I was the head professional for the last twelve years I worked there,” he added. Heit then joined the Stillwater Country Club in 2020 as the head golf professional. The Stillwater Country Club is an 18-hole private club overlooking the scenic St. Croix River Valley. The club was founded in 1942 and has over 500 active members. The original nine holes were designed by Tom Vardon, while the back nine holes were designed by noted Twin Cities Golf Architect, Paul Coates. The first year Heit started working at the club was right before the pandemic. He said that the first year was unique and fun because there was a whole new

staff. Heit brought in two young assistants and learned the lay of the land quickly. “That was probably my greatest memory because it was so different,” said Heit. “because of how busy, every tee time was taken.” The group would try to go across the river to catch a tee time, and the earliest would be 6:45 p.m. He added that “2020 was a crazy, fun year and the course saw almost 33,000 rounds of golf.”

Heit finished his time at Stillwater Country Club at the end of December. “I’ve been on the manager side, I’ve been on the golf pro side, I’ve been at clubs where I have been both,” Heit said. He is constantly challenging himself, trying to learn new stuff. “I have a very good knowledge of the golf swing; I’ve learned from some very good mentors.” He will join the North Oaks golf team at the start of the new year in January, where he will be taking over the position from Ray Vennewitz, Jr. “The Vennewitz Family has meant so much to North Oaks and Ray for being so gracious with his time during this transition.” The North Oaks Country Club golf members enjoy exclusive access to championship tees. The par 71 course weaves and rolls over 6,655 yards and is challenging. The course reflects Stanley Thompson’s passion for crafting challenging courses that follow natural landscapes. The club hosts a men’s and women’s league in the spring, summer and fall. North Oaks also runs a junior league that will help local juniors learn the rules of the game, etiquette, sportsmanship and fundamentals that are essential to the game of golf. Golf members can enjoy two trackman simulators during the winter. Heit said he is excited to join the golf team at North Oaks and is excited to join, and contribute, to the operation the team already has going on at the course. “I’ve had the pleasure of working at some great clubs. Not every club is the same,” said Heit. “I try to bring the best of all of them, as well as the best things I’ve learned from my mentors.”

Welcome to Perro Park STAFF WRITER

Perro Park is located in the heart of Bayport. It is adjacent to City Hall and offers a variety of recreation facilities, which keeps the park bustling and busy with activity all year around. The park includes amenities such as a playground, a warming house and an open play area. The two amenities it is most known for is “Legion Field,” which is sponsored by the Bayport American Legion Post 491 and its two sheets of ice that are used for skating. Perro Park has two hockey rinks, one for hockey and one for pleasure. “We don’t have ice right now. We haven’t even started because the temperatures just aren’t cooperating,” said Simon Wirth, Bayport public works director. The rinks have been around for up to 30 years. Every morning, the Bayport Parks and Recreation crew go out to the rinks, sweep them and fill any holes that may have formed from the day before. Unfortunately, due to the warm temperatures in

My career in law enforcement spans twentyseven years, with seventeen of those years focused exclusively on child abuse investigations. I was a contract instructor for the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension for ten years, teaching other law enforcement across the state the unique techniques used in this specialized field. After retirement, my wife and I traveled in a motorhome and spent our summers living and working in Voyageurs National Park for twelve years. I have never lost my dedication to the cause of protecting children, and I recently decided to write novels that draw from my experience in law enforcement, highlighting the problem of child abuse in our country. December, the rinks have yet to be made. The Parks and Recreation Department hopes to have the rinks set up after the new year in January. Both rinks will be open till mid-to-late February when the ice starts to melt. During the Holiday season, Perro Park has lights to create a festive atmosphere. “The warming house is lit up nicely every evening,” said Wirth. Perhaps the park’s most unique feature is Perro Creek, which runs along the north and east boundaries of the park. Benches and open spaces near the creek are popular for individuals looking to take a break from the active recreation areas featured at the park. Perro Park is located at 347 2nd Street N., Bayport. The park is open from 7 a.m.- 9 p.m.

Sunrise Rotary Exchange Student attends class in Poland This year’s outbound exchange student from Stillwater Area High School is Dakota Ostlie. He is currently living and going to school in Poland for the 2023-2024 school year. Ostlie successfully arrived in Poland this past August. Ever since he was a young child, Ostlie said he had loved learning about history, geography and other cultures. The Rotary Youth Exchange program was the perfect match to allow him to study abroad. Currently, he is attending high school in Warsaw. His current schedule includes History, Geography, Economics, Polish, Biology and Physical Education Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, while the regular students attend school, five exchange students from the Rotary who are staying here from Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Mexico all go to the local cultural center in the city to take additional Polish language, history and cultural lessons. Before departing for Europe, he shared his thoughts about the exchange program.

“I am looking forward to experiencing a firsthand account of Polish culture by living a day-to-day life and developing different perspectives,” said Ostlie. He also was looking forward to learning Polish, meeting his host family and other students. “Exploring Warsaw and other cities will be a way to gain an overall understanding and appreciation of other cultures,” he added. His host family consists of two twins, who are each 11 years old. This is his first time having “siblings” since he is an only child back home. A main concern Ostlie had before leaving was having trouble getting along with his host family, since his arrival, he said that they got along very quickly and he feels comfortable staying there. As a family, they have already taken a few trips together. “In September, we took four days to drive two hours up North to a family house in the Polish countryside,” Ostlie said, “I got to meet many of their relatives, and I took some time to enjoy the countryside

since I am living in the city.” More recently, Jack Gibbons, a Stillwater Sunrise Rotary member, reached out to Ostlie to learn what he has experienced thus far in Poland and the similarities, or differences, between Stillwater and Poland. “School is definitely different from the United States,” the exchange student said, “First, my commute to school is widely different due to Poland not using school buses. I have used public transport before, but only on a few occasions.” Now, Ostlie needs it to get to school every day. He said he has learned the various routes to school and back, along with specific buses and metro trains. His total commute oneway to school takes about an hour. “Something I really appreciate here is the number of times I get to go out and do stuff with friends,” Ostlie added, “Back home, I rarely got to spend time with friends outside of school hours whether it just be lack of things to do or that people were busy at work.” In Poland, however, Ostlie

The Forest Lake Masonic Lodge has donated seven lifesaving fire suppression devices to the Wyoming Police Department. These devices fit in the trunk of a squad car or other first responder vehicles. They reduce fire and water damage in enclosures like homes, garages, stores and sheds. They are lightweight and easy to deploy. Within 35 seconds, the fire is suppressed, and the temperature inside the enclosure drops by more than 1,000 degrees, making it a safer environment from which to extract trapped firefighters or citizens.

Folk School to the Osceola Senior Center for the months of January and February. The Dare to Repair fix-it clinic takes place on the last Saturday of the month. The community is encouraged to drop in to receive help and learn how to restore items rather than throw them away. Those at the clinic can help you mend clothes and repair household items. Do not expect to drop off items to be repaired for you; you will work with a volunteer to try to repair the broken item. The January fix-it clinic will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Osceola Senior Center, 310 Chieftain St., Osceola. More information about the clinic can be found at MarineMillsFolkSchool. org.
