WHITE BEAR LAKE | AVENUE OF THE ARTS

Its project-based model regularly gets students out of a traditional fourwall classroom setting. Our communities and the natural world around us become settings for reading and writing, math, science, art, history, music, physical education and other curriculum subjects. Using grade-appropriate strategies, River Grove students use a stimulating, hands-on, multifaceted approach to create a presentation or performance, or investigate a question or problem. A project example might include using math and science skills to build and place birdhouses in a natural area, studying which placements are most successful, and writing poems about the birds who live there. Expanding to art, the students might create watercolor sketches about the birds, trees or other animals around them or collect materials from the area to make a nature collage.

Karen is also survived by her sister Patty Knoblauch, mother-in-law, Dorothy Freed, and special nieces Sharon Bloom, Susan Lamb and Lee Hanson & her daughter, Shylah Maus. Good friends, Bonnie Tschida and Carol Carlson and many nieces and nephews also enriched her life as did John’s extended family. She cherished the friendship of the Bags, who were her coworkers at the chiropractic clinic for many years.
