Sports New coach turns page on Cougarette story For the Centennial CouEXTRA garette cheerleading crew, POINT a passing of the torch comes with the hope of a bright future. After forming the group and coaching the girls for the past six seasons, Head Coach Susan McMullen and assistant Cheryl Eliason have stepped aside and handed the reins to Stephanie Warren. MARK AGUIRRE Warren will begin almost from scratch, with three eighth-grade girls comprising the team. “I’m thrilled to come in and work with the girls (including her daughter), offered Warren, who also teaches in the area middle school program. “The varsity cheerleaders said they’d help and maybe include them at some (varsity) games. We hope to get some more kids out when school starts, maybe even some boys to cheer or be a mascot. Susan With one of the few cheerleadMcMullen ing programs in the state made up of kids with special needs for their adapted sports, McMullen and Eliason spent countless hours working and practicing with the girls over the years. The original team is not gone. Warren said Ally McMullen and Stephanie Sobetski will help and maybe act as advisors. She said Cheryl both are excited to retain their Eliason connection with the Cougarettes. “I was ecstatic to learn a new coach had stepped forward so adapted cheerleading could continue at Centennial, said Susan McMullen. “Confidence grows in girls with special needs through programs like this, plus adapted cheerleading makes the Centennial student body more accepting of people with disabilities. Centennial students have demonstrated time and again their support for the Cougarettes, which is something they should be proud of. “I met with Stephanie and told her how I structured the adapted cheer program, said McMullen. “I encouraged her to take it any direction she wished. I didn’t want her to feel she needed to emulate our program. I gave her the uniforms, poms, megaphone, cheer book and all the contact information we gathered in the community. I feel like the future of adapted cheerleading is in very good hands. Early kickoff An extra sense of urgency added to the pigskins flying through the air last week with the beginning of prep football practices. There is absolutely no time to dally this season, since games are set to commence one week earlier than usual. Centennial draws a very tough opening-day foe in visiting Prior Lake, Section 6(6A) champion after finishing second in the South Suburban Conference with a 7-1 mark. After winning Section 6, it lost to Maple Grove in the opening round of the state tourney to end with a 9-2 overall mark. The opener is set for Saturday at 7 p.m. The Cougars entertain Champlin Park the following Friday in the Northwest Suburban Conference opener for both clubs. Centennial prevailed 22-21 last season. Game time is 7 p.m. — Mark Arguirre is a contributing writer for Press Publications.

Weather Discussion

Finally my station recorded its first 90º temperature in almost two years when it reached 91º this past Friday, August 14. Not only was it the hottest day of the year, but it was also one of the steamiest when you include the dew point, which was in the low 70’s. As noted on the front page, the airport recorded its first back-to-back 90’s since September 6-7, 2013. It had been quite a stretch indeed. One thing worth mentioning is the thunderstorm that occurred six miles west of Roseau on Wednesday, August 12. This storm produced the largest hail yet recorded this summer, 4.5 in diameter and 12 in circumference. That is softballsized hail. For us, cooler and less humid weather is in store. Astronomy Note: Venus will move from the evening sky into the morning sky on August 20 and will become a morning star.
