Parks and Nature Getting outside is an essential part of enjoying the beautiful seasons that Minnesota has to offer, and the Northeast Metro area is the perfect place to do this. The Anoka, Ramsey and Washington county park systems have many opportunities for spending time in the great outdoors. The many outdoor recreation areas offer trails, fishing and exploration opportunities for kids and adults alike. Lakes like Loch Ness and Crooked Lake provide great piers to fish for sunfish, walleye, and northern pike. Off-shore fishing can also be found in Rum River South County Park in Coon Rapids.
Those who enjoy a quiet walk in nature can find beautiful trail systems in William O’Brien State Park, which is also open to crosscountry skiers and snowshoers in the winter. The Rice Creek Off-Leash Dog Area provides the perfect place to go on a walk with your furry friends. For an up close and personal experience with Minnesota wildlife, the Wildlife Science Center in Stacy is home to one of the largest collections of native, captive animals ranging from wolves to bears to owls. Bird-watching enthusiasts can discover more than 200 species in William O’Brien State Park.
