Fall Sweet Fall!

From the SAVOUR TEAM

SAVOUR AUTUMN 2023

One thing that I love about Minnesota is that pivotal time period when summer slowly turns into fall.

I love the cool mornings and seeing the leaves change from their vibrant green to beautiful shades of red, yellow, and orange.

too hot. I want to be able to enjoy being outside without having to worry about heat stroke. I admit though, the one downfall to fall means that winter is coming and Minnesota winters are brutal.

fall cocktail, popcorn, and soup to make for dinner. The Argyle Moose is the perfect shop to find fall decor. Everything on the store’s shelves is made by local artists.

Pine Tree Apple Orchard entertains for Fall

Wagon rides through an apple orchard, completing a corn maze and picking out your front porch pumpkin. All of these fall-themed activities can be found at the Pine Tree Apple Orchard along with many more fun, fall activities for the whole family.

The first apple trees were planted in 1904 on the shore of Pine Tree Lake. The orchard that was once a 25-acre farm is now over 300-acres and is still family-owned

and operated by the Jacobson family.

The farm offers strawberries in the summer with apple picking starting at the end of August and goes through March. Pine Tree offers 22 different varieties of apples.

Families can pick out the best pumpkin in the patch from September 30 to October 22. Individuals can pick their own pumpkins during Orchard hours from the 6-acre field.

Later in the fall season,

the Pine Tree Apple Orchard will be hosting the Run & Walk for Apples. Individuals can run or walk through the orchard, strawberry field and pumpkin patch.

Pine Tree Apple Orchard will also have live entertainment scattered throughout the fall season. They will have fresh baked goods for sale, caramel apples, fresh cider, gifts and more.

The orchard is located on 450 Apple Orchard Rd., White Bear Lake.

The moose in Minnesota

The moose is Minnesota’s largest wild animal. Minnesota is one of the few states that have moose. The moose population in the state ranks at number five behind Alaka, Maine, Idaho and Washington.

The moose is the largest member of the deer family. It averages

from 950 to 1,000 pounds and sometimes can exceed that, weighing 1,200 pounds. A moose’s antlers can measure five feet across and weigh up to 40 pounds.

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the estimated 2023 moose population is

3,290. Most of the moose in Minnesota can be found in the northeast arrowhead region of the state. After a sharp decline, the moose population has remained relatively stable in recent years. They are considered a “species of special concern” in the state of Minnesota.

Kowalski’s celebrates 40-years in the community

At the end of September, Kowalski’s will celebrate being a part of their respective communities for the past 40 years.

Rachael Perron, the Culinary and Branding Director at Kowalski’s said that the biggest accomplishment so far as a business has been just being a part of the community as a whole, “the attachment that customers have to ‘their’

Kowalski’s is a testament to the relationships we’ve developed with them over the years,” Perron said.

Kowalski’s has been able to get to know their customers through conversations, bringing their groceries out to their cars, store events and personal conversations that occurred in store.

“We’ve been able to get to know them and help put together wonderful meals in their homes. That gives us joy,” she added.

12 SAVOUR AUTUMN 2023

Like every business, they have had their challenges. The Covid-19 pandemic created difficulties and made the business rethink how they did some things. The challenge of the pandemic propelled their delivery and curbside business and ordering platforms to another level.

One thing the company is looking forward to is opening new businesses in the Twin Cities.

“Every store is a chance to better understand our customers and what works best for them,” Perron said, “new openings also provide opportunities to make changes in existing stores that keep them dynamic and exciting to shop for everyone.”

Kowalski’s adds new products and services to make shopping more fun, more joyful. Perron said that “we love keeping things fresh with new top-quality choices all around the store.”

These choices include whole primal cutting in the Meat Department, made-to-order specialities in the Deli and adding wearable fashion in the Gift Department.

Kowalski’s has been a part of families for generations. Some families have worked at the same location for decades and to this day entire families continue to work sideby-side. It is recommended to those looking for employment due to the welcoming work environment.

“I’ve personally been with Kowalski’s for 12 years now,” said Perron, “my favorite memories at Kowalski’s are the deep conversations I’ve had with my colleaguesnot about recipe development or shelf tag decisions, but about kindness, justice and fairness. We believe in, support, challenge and celebrate one another in a way that’s truly special.”

This is the second location after the Kowalski’s on Grand Avenue. Perron mentioned how big of a milestone it is for a business to go from being a single store to a chain.

The close-knit community of White Bear Lake continues to hold a special place in Kowalski’s heart.

“Whether through Groceries for Good Causes, team sponsorships or Marketfest, it’s been an incredible joy being part of it all,” Perron concluded.

Pumpkin spice and everything nice, Fall is here

When one sees the leaves finally changing color, the days getting shorter, and pumpkin-spice everything filling the shelves, one can only assume that fall and colder weather is coming.

Fall means more than just pumpkin-spice lattes for all. It also means sweaters, soup, and most importantly- pumpkin spice-scented candles.

In Hugo, Minnesota you will find a moose adorned in a cozy scarf sitting in the window of a small shop just off the main drag. Inside The Argyle Moose, there is a fall treasure for everyone.

The shop carries “a little bit of everything,” shop owner Celeste Knipping said.

The Argyle Moose was created in 2020 by Celeste and Patrick Knipping in hopes to create more places to shop in Hugo. The Argyle Moose

stands out from the rest because all the products in the store are made locally. Currently, there are 75 artists featured in the store. Some are hyper-local right out of Hugo, Minnesota and some are artists the Knipping’s have bought from in the past.

But they all share one thing in common- they all are from somewhere in Minnesota.

“The goal was to carry as much local as possible,” Knipping said. Along with bringing more shopping places to Hugo, another one of their goals was to carry as much local as possible and help the artists featured in their store grow.

Items perfect for Friday night football, pumpkin spice-scented candles, fall-themed artwork, and cozy sweatshirts adorn the walls and shelves of The Argyle Moose in the fall. This upcoming season, there will

be a few new fall-themed items in the store.

Pumpkins and a black cat made out of old books are just a few items that will be new editions to The Argyle Moose’s fall collection. The store will still carry some of the signature fall items; fall-scented candles, fallthemed cookbooks, wooden and ceramic trees, and soup and coco mixes from The Golden Fig.

When you step into the store, you can expect twinkling lights and amazing customer service that makes it feel more like an experience rather than transactional. You can have a conversation, enjoy your time in the store and leave with a perfectly wrapped gift if you are on the go.

The Argyle Moose is open Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. You can pay them a visit at 14755 Victor Hugo Blvd #110, Hugo.

Spicey Maple-Parmesan Popcorn

Servings: 2 people

Ingredients

• 1 tbsp. Kowalski's Pure Maple Syrup

• 2 1/2 tsp. Kowalsk's unsalted butter

• 1 1/2 tsp hot sauce (for more taste)

• 1/2 tsp Kowalsk's Ground Sumac

• 2 cups Cucina Viva Rosemary Crostini

• Kowalski's Popcorn Salt and freshly grated Kowalski's Parmasan Cheese, to taste.

Good question

What is sumac?

Sumac is a plum-colored spice made from ground, dried peppercorn-shaped fruits of the shrub or small tree called a sumac. It adds a lemony flavor and is often found in Middle Eastern foods such as salads, meats, hummus, rice or anywhere lemon zest or juice might be used.

Sumac is commonly found in the spice blend za'atar, which often combines the herb za'atar with oregano, thyme and savory with sesame seeds, salt and other spices. It is commonly used to season flatbreads, hummus, grilled meat, lentils, beans, grains (such as couscous) and Middle Eastern-inspired soups, salad dressings and sandwich spreads.
