MAHTOMEDI — District 832 teachers are gaining enrichment opportunities thanks to a sizable gift from a former teacher and school board member. Jim Hansen has pledged $10,000 a year for the remainder of his lifetime to support teacher grants awarded via the Mahtomedi Area Educational Foundation Hansen (MAEF). The Dellwood resident also has committed to a $1 million endowment, to be awarded upon his death, to sustain the annual grants. It's the largest gift the foundation has ever received. “This endowment is truly a game-changer for MAEF, said Executive Director Jen Ruhland. “The endowment will fund transformational opportunities for inspired educators in Mahtomedi Public Schools.” An $11,000 gift in 2001 from former school board members Lael Ramaley and Sarah Weddell started the MAEF tradition of giving grants to teachers for professional development opportunities. Those gifted funds have all been utilized and the foundation has been devoting approximately $2,000 a year out of its general fund toward teacher development. That amount is increasing tenfold this year. Educational foundation leaders have agreed to match Hansen's annual $10,000 gifts during his lifetime. As in year's past, teachers must propose a specific professional development opportunity when they apply for funds.

Grandstand manager Craig Flor readies for the Alan Jackson concert on Aug. 30.
(More weather on sports page)
Few people have spent more time at the Minnesota State Fair than Craig Flor. As the manager of the grandstand, the Vadnais Heights resident works 12 to 16 hours per day each of the 12 days of the Great Minnesota Get-Together. He's been at every grandstand performance since 1989. But he typically only pauses long enough to observe a song or two. From checking weather radar to directing backstage traffic, he's usually too busy taking care of a myriad of tasks: “anything that's needed to keep things running smoothly and the fans happy,” he said. If he's lucky enough to find himself with a break, he usually starts prepar-
ing for tomorrow's show. Of course there have been a few shows where Flor couldn't resist pausing longer to observe more of the action, even though it meant he wouldn't get home until 3 a.m. instead of 2 a.m. The “spectacle” of Motley Crew and Kiss have been personal favorites. A 60-piece orchestra accompanying Martina McBride was another most memorable show for him. While he gets to be backstage with the likes of Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood and Garrison Keillor, Flor doesn't ask for autographs or photos. He doesn't approach the stars; he usually only interacts with them if they come to him in need of assistance. “We try to be professional and

Abandoned station becoming hazardous WHITE BEAR LAKE — For fear a lit match could have tragic consequences, the city may force the owner of the former Petro gas station to remove underground fuel tanks. The topic of the abandoned station at 2502 County Road E came up for City Council discussion Aug. 25 after police reports prompted the city building inspector to pay a visit. The city was well aware the building was vacant, but did not know it was subject to vandalism and unauthorized occupancy. A steel roof had also collapsed over the car wash area. City Planner Anne Kane told council a letter has
been sent to the property owner, a Twin Cities resident, explaining that the building is hazardous and a public nuisance. Instruction was given to remove the collapsed roof within 20 days. The owner also had five days to secure the building and steps have been taken to board up windows, she said. "It's not looking too attractive," Mayor Jo Emerson noted. As for the tanks, the city knows they have not been removed but doesn't know if they contain petroleum products. "We don't know the condition of underground tanks," said City Manager Mark Sather. City Attorney Roger Jensen suggested staff look into the situation, which he said "has the potential of being extremely dangerous.

Man allegedly threatened his girlfriend and her roommate A Vadnais Heights man who allegedly threatened his girlfriend and her roommate with knives is facing three felony charges. A White Bear Lake woman told Ramsey County Sheriff investigators that she thought her boyfriend, Peter James Peltier, 28, was going to kill her, but his parents interrupted the assault. According to the criminal complaint, the 23-year-old woman said she went to Peltier's house on Bramblewood Avenue to break up with him on Aug. 22. Peltier was intoxicated, she said. After she told him she was leaving him, Peltier reportedly grabbed her phone from her hand and took it into the bathroom where he stayed for several minutes. She suspected he was snooping through the contents of her phone, she said.
Peltier reportedly came out of the bathroom, grabbed her ponytail and called her vulgar names. The woman said Peltier then grabbed a knife and held it to her stomach and her throat as he continued to yell. Peltier's parents then walked into the room and the girlfriend fled the house. The woman alleged that Peltier yelled “I will find you.” Peltier's parents told investigators they heard a commotion and when they went into the room their son's girlfriend ran out and their son was holding a knife. The father said he took the knife from his son. The father gave the knife to a deputy. After the alleged assault at his home, the girlfriend's roommate told investigators that Peltier came to their White Bear Lake home looking for
his girlfriend. Peltier allegedly threatened the roommate and cut a screen, according to the complaint. Peltier was located and arrested later at his home. A second knife was found in the pocket of the shorts Peltier reportedly had been wearing during the confrontations. Peltier was uncooperative and refused to speak to an investigator, the complaint states. Peltier was charged Aug. 25 with domestic assault, assault with a dangerous weapon and terroristic threats. He was later released on bail. He had three prior misdemeanor domestic assault convictions. — Kristine Goodrich

Blaine residents Brendon Michael Greiner, 25, and Kellie Kent Svoboda, 24, pleaded guilty on Aug. 20 to a felony theft charge. In a plea deal, a second felony charge of possession of burglary tools is dismissed. According to the criminal complaint: Ramsey County Sheriff deputies responded to an alarm at Nelson Marine the early morning of May 24. They observed two men in a fenced area tampering with boats. The men ran, climbed the fence and disappeared into a wooded area. Greiner was located by a deputy and Svoboda was found by a K-9. Both men possessed tools and motor mounting screws. The deputy later realized that the woman had given a false name and she was actually the woman who was the protected party in the restraining order and she had a felony warrant. The vehicle was searched and a backpack was found that contained a baggie with 4 grams of methamphetamine as well as multiple empty baggies and a digital scale. • A driver was stopped for driving erratically Aug. 20 on Meadowwood Lane. wanted to hang out with him and his friends. So at that point, my new goal was to save up for a skateboard. Back then Hi Tempo ski and sail shop offered the ultimate in skateboard options. I had my eye on a Vision Psycho, a board that had an aggressive tail and nose with a medium concave deck, along with graphics my mom would approve of. The Gullwing trucks and OJ wheels were awesome. The day came when I bought it, put it together and started riding. While I practiced for hours every day during my elementary school years, I hadn’t anticipated that my dream of owning

a skateboard would lead to four days at St. John’s Hospital with road rash, a skull fracture and a concussion. I was lucky that I didn’t have permanent damage, though some say it’s debatable. Back then, we didn’t think about wearing a helmet for biking, rollerblading or skateboarding, and it wasn’t on the radar of our parents, either. Those activities were a rite of passage for kids. We built launch ramps, quarter pipes and tried to railside on any curb we found, never thinking about how close we were to a head injury. Today, I get chills when I see a kid on a skateboard, razor, rollerblades, electric scooter or bike without a helmet. And it’s surprising how often helmet-less kids are riding along busy roads or sidewalks. I know kids don’t like to wear helmets – I didn’t like it, and my kids often complain about it. Given their own discretion, kids go out riding and ‘forget’ to wear their helmet. As parents, we can remind them that today’s helmets are much more comfortable and
“All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.” – Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As Labor Day -- the unofficial end of summer approaches, I like to recall this famous quote from Dr. King. All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity – and on Labor Day it’s important to recognize that all labor, in its many forms, is important. Labor Day, falling on Monday, Sept. 7 this year, is a time to remember our past struggles and appreciate the people who helped make our country what it is today. The fi rst Labor Day celebration was held in 1882 in New York City. During the next few years more cities passed ordinances celebrating the holiday, and in 1887 Oregon
LEGISLATOR LINGO
CHUCK WIGER became the fi rst state to pass a law recognizing Labor Day. Seven years later, Labor Day become a national holiday when Congress passed legislation making the fi rst Monday in September Labor Day. The idea behind celebrating this day is simple; pay tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country. It is important to take
time to thank workers, both past and present, who have improved our lives. Many aspects we take for granted now, were hard fought struggles for many years. Things like child labor laws, a 40-hour work week, overtime pay, health insurance, workers compensation insurance and safe working conditions were won in labor fights. These are provisions we now see as obvious rights, but for many years they were not. Labor Day was created to recognize and thank the workforce, but the other 364 days a year many laborers were subject to brutal working conditions. As we celebrate this wonderful holiday and show our appreciation to workers, it is essential to remember the efforts of those who came before us. Brave men and wom-
en risked a lot in order to secure rights that we have today. We continue to see people fighting for workers’ rights today. The struggle is not over. trendy than when we were kids. Most importantly, we need to enforce the rule of wearing a helmet, and impose consequences if they don’t. We also need to model the behavior we want them to follow, which means wearing a helmet ourselves. Though we bought helmets for our kids along with their first bikes, I hadn’t worn a helmet when I rode my bike with my family until a couple of years ago. I bought one after a friend was hit while riding his bike through Dellwood, and he credited a helmet with helping save his life. According to the CDC only half of bicyclists wore helmets in 2010, and 800 bicyclists were killed and 515,000 injured — half of those children and adolescents under age 20. Of those, 26,000 had traumatic brain injuries. Just think of a helmet as part of the required gear needed to ride on the pavement. Moms and dads – let your kids go out and play hard, but please make them wear a helmet. — Carter Johnson is publisher of Press Publications.

Preparing for the future Next week, children in White Bear Lake and the surrounding area will be returning to school. I love this time of year; the excitement, the preparation, the energy in the air. It’s both a fresh start and a return to what is familiar. There is quite a bit of preparation and excitement going on at Solid Ground as well. We recently completed a 2015-2020 Strategic Plan with goals that are both new and exciting, yet also familiar and foundational to our work. When looking to the future, it is wise to fi rst review the past. The Board and staff spent much of last year gathering research on trends in housing and homelessness, as well as surveying our clients, donors, volunteers and other stakeholders to learn more about what we do well and where we need to improve. What we learned drove both the planning process and the fi nal outcome. Our 2015-2020 Strategic Plan focuses on four key initiatives: (1) Expand Services to Children and Youth to Break the Cycle of Homelessness. Homeless and unstably housed children are more prone to illness, emotional and behavioral problems and poor school performance. Solid Ground will expand its after school tutoring program to provide an additional day of tutoring to help kids perform at grade level. Another goal is to have all of our children and youth enrolled in enrichment activities outside of school hours, to help build their social and
MOVERS AND SHAKERS
TRISHA KAUFFMAN emotional development. (2) Provide Wellness Programs to Improve Client Well-being. Most homeless adults have multiple, chronic health issues like physical or mental illnesses and chemical dependency, and most homeless women have also experienced domestic violence, sexual assault and other trauma. Solid Ground will build on its groundbreaking Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills training by offering more trauma informed services, including a Women in Recovery Group and an empowerment program for our younger women and girls. We will also offer more services to improve our clients’ physical wellness, such as yoga and nutrition classes. (3) Enhance Opportunities for Permanent Employment. Twothirds of Solid Ground families have incomes below the federal poverty level, which for a family of four is only $24,250. Solid Ground will provide personalized employment services to parents prior to program exit so that all families have increased income before they leave us. We will also direct more resources to helping
families overcome their transportation barriers. (4) Continue Organizational Growth and Impact. Homelessness among families with children is the fastest growing segment of the homeless population in Minnesota, increasing 32% from 2006-2012. Solid Ground will continue to grow its scatteredsite housing services in suburban Ramsey and Washington Counties and will also partner with affordable housing developers to bring our services to more families in need in the community. In summer 2016, Solid Ground will partner with Sherman Associates to serve homeless veterans and their families at the new Villages at FrostEnglish apartments in Maplewood. We are excited by the possibilities that our 2015-2020 Strategic Plan presents, and I invite you to read a summary of the plan on our website: www.solidgroundmn. org. I also invite you to discover where you can contribute to this plan. Join us as an after-school tutor, or partner with us as an employer or landlord. Come learn more about the issues at one of our monthly Home At Last Tours. There are so many ways to engage in this work. You can just feel the energy in the air. — Trisha Cummins Kauffman is Executive Director of Solid Ground, tckauffman@ solidgroundmn.org

Letter to the Editor Always black and orange Lyle Hoff WHITE BEAR TOWNSHIP — In the spring of 2016, my wife and I plan to sell the house and move north to be closer to our children and grandchildren. This means I will be retiring from my position as board member and president of the White Bear Youth Football Association effective at the end of this year. Over the years, my work for the association has been both challenging and rewarding. It has truly been my privilege to have shared this journey with all of you. I am confident that the board will continue to lead the league in a trustworthy, evolving and thoughtful direction. I believe in the approach of the league and in each of
your abilities to guide the organization down the right road. Thank you to board members, former board members, players, parents, coaches, assistant coaches, team parents, all volunteers, sponsors, referees, White Bear Lake Area High School Athletic Department, White Bear Lake Community Services and Recreation, city of White Bear Lake, White Bear Press and everyone else I met along the way for the generous support and encouragement you provided to me. I will miss all of you. In South Dakota, my colors were black and orange. Here, my children’s colors were black and orange. In my heart, my colors will always be black and orange no matter where I am.

Perhaps the most unusual request came many years ago from Bonnie Raitt: She wanted to milk a cow. Flor knew a family friend who had cattle at the fair, so he summoned the friend to bring a cow backstage. The grandstand manager didn't have any dirt to dish on any of the many celebrities he has met. “They're all nice people,” he said. The most rewarding part of the job isn't meeting celebrities or getting a prime view of their performances, Flor said. “It's gratifying to pull off 12 shows and watch up to 13,000 fans having a great time each night,” he said. One of his swimming coaches at Mounds View High School gave Flor his first job at the grandstand the summer after he graduated from high school in 1989. The Shoreview native swept floors, unloaded and loaded equipment, and chauffeured band members from the airport as he worked his way up the ranks to manager. Severe weather is his greatest cause for concern, Flor said. In 2013 the Macklemore concert was delayed and fans sheltered inside the grandstand concourse while a storm passed. Last year the talent show finals awards ceremony had to be moved to a drier location after a rain. The only other memorable mishap during a show was when a critical sound board malfunctioned during an Alabama concert. The show was paused briefly while a replacement was found and installed. Flor hasn't missed a day of the fair in 26 years and counting and has no plans to retire anytime soon. It's a grueling 12 days, “but it's only 12 days,” he said. Only when his wife and three children

Craig Flor has worked at the grandstand since 1989. visit the fair once or twice a year does he take an hour or two to visit a few of the many other fair attractions. Flor also doesn't eat much food on a stick. It's not that he doesn't enjoy the fair's famous fare (pronto pups and corn-on-the-cob are his favorites). There are meals catered in for the grandstand crew and performers, and it's faster to grab what's already there backstage, he said. Come Sept. 8, the Vadnais Heights resident of 17 years will be back to the grind at his regular job. He's manager of the University of Minnesota's Mariucci and Ridder arenas. He's accustomed to working long days at his alma mater as well, especially during the height of hockey and graduation seasons. This spring he hosted 21 university and high school graduation ceremonies between midMay and mid-June. Fall is busy at the arenas, too. This week he's escaping from his grandstand duties for a few hours to help set up for a trade show and a welcome address from the university president to new students. Flor expects his next day's rest won't come until Sept. 12. But he's not complaining. “I knew what I signed up for,” he said.
Gas Station Continued from page 1A “From what I’ve seen tonight, this is a case we can quickly and successfully remedy,” Jensen told the council. “The law allows the city to remove the hazard and assess cost back to the property owner. If we don’t get satisfactory action between now and the next council meeting, we should jump on this right away. All it would take is a kid dropping a match into gasoline. It could be very serious.” Councilman Brian Belisle pushed for “aggressive legal action” against the property owner. “We have homes in the community that have been condemned, we should do the same with this property. This is unacceptable,” he said, “and we should take steps to demolish the building.” Graffiti on the building
bothered Councilman Dan Jones more than the roof collapse. “The Star of David immediately says hate crime to me. We need that removed and we need to strengthen our graffiti ordinances,” he stated. Sather called the blighted property a “dose of reality.” “When commercial properties are left unattended, they begin to run into trouble,” Sather said. “It’s unfortunate it has to fall to this condition where we are forced to use our ordinances (under the state Hazardous Building Act). This one had a chance of re-opening. Now that it’s left unused, it has fallen to this point of disrepair.” Councilwoman Renee Tessier asked what the city can do to stimulate action on the closed gas station across from the new Cub Foods on White
Bear Avenue. “It would be nice to clean this one up too,” she said. Sather said the city is more hopeful about that corner station’s future. “We have had interest from potential developers. Traffic generated by Cub should bring more interest in developing the rest of the area,” he told council. The city manager promised to follow up on the issue, noting if not corrected immediately, staff will bring a resolution forward to proceed with demolition. The city will also contact the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to see if there is a record of testing the tanks. “It was a significant time since it was used as a service station,” added Councilman Doug Biehn. “We need to remove the tanks.”
City wants to go Dutch on sports center costs WHITE BEAR LAKE — Without a financial partner, the future of the city's aging Sports Center remains dubious. An update to City Council Aug. 25 indicated staff is "moving forward to have conversations with the school district," said Assistant City Manager Ellen Richter, as well as a national sports center consultant who is "well versed in planning and funding new and reused sports centers." The city is also looking at a possible joint powers agreement with more than one jurisdiction to help operate the city-owned facility. The efforts are part of a decision the city must make: Should taxpayers ante up for a seven-figure bill to replace the aging center's refrigeration system? The decision is made more contentious by the fact the majority of users are nonresidents. "We understand the council is looking for us to find equitable funding solutions to keep the center viable," Richter said. "We will report back to council throughout the fall." City Manager Mark Sather added that staff is also working on the "funding disconnect" between sports center users. In a break-out of users provided in July, White Bear Lake accounted for 24 percent, Hugo 29 percent and White Bear Township 14 percent. Sather told the City Council at its Aug. 25 meeting that the city is "still
trying to hang onto the ($200,000) Mighty Ducks grant (to update the refrigeration system) and exploring the possibility of a grant amendment to use the funds for something else. "Or we may have to surrender the grant and live to fight another day," Sather said. Councilman Dan Jones noted he appreciates the work staff is doing on the project but questioned whether it was time well spent. "I don't want to move forward without identifying a cost-share partner to help with funding the repairs. I don't hear that from staff," Jones noted. "If no one else is involved, I don't see us moving forward." Councilman Doug Biehn pointed out that he interpreted "equitable funding stream" as cost sharing. "That is 100 percent necessary for my support," he added. Sather assured council staff understands its position. Jones said he didn't mean his comments "as a club to threaten anyone. I just don't think we need more studies and a lot of meetings unless staff feels progress is being made to find a financial partner." Costs range from $1.4 to $2.4 million to replace the 26-year-old ice system, depending on which refrigerant option is selected. — Debra Neutkens

Meet the mayor candidate Editor's note: Mahtomedi mayoral candidate Todd Rogers reported he didn't receive a Press invitation to be interviewed for an Aug. 19 story introducing the candidates running for mayor and City Council. The Press thus decided to publish a biography and statement similar in scope to those in the past story. Rogers is one of three candidates for the mayor seat. He retired in June from the Mahtomedi Fire Department after 29 years of service. He was the department's chief from 1993 to 2009. The lifelong Mahtomedi resident works as a production manager and said his current and past employment has provided him “an extensive background in employee management” in the emergency
services, office, manufacturing and construction sectors. The candidate said “maintaining low taxes” while “addressing infrastructure needs” would be among his priorities. “I have always had a goal of serving on the Mahtomedi City Council and I feel now is the right time to run as a candidate for mayor,” he said. “In my opinion, a mayor needs to be a solid leader and a good listener, not only to the residents but also the employees of the city. A good leader also needs to set aside their personal agenda and focus on what is in the best interest of the city as a whole.”
Endowment Continued from page 1A There is no set dollar limit for applications. Summer seminar and conference admission fees have been the typical request. With the new funds, Ruhland said she and Hansen hope teachers will “think outside the box” with their requests. New this year teachers are being invited to not only request educational experiences for themselves, but also any classroom materials needed to implement what they learned. A committee of MAEF board members and citizens select the grant recipients. It's a blind process in which the committee reviews the applications without knowing who is the applicant. The committee members weigh the cost of the request against the benefit it will have for the teacher and ultimately his or her students, Ruhland said. The committee also favors opportunities that don't require teachers to miss teaching classes.

Application details for teachers Applications are being accepted now through Jan. 24. Recipients will be selected by the end of February. See maefgives.org for more info and application form. Hansen, who is an educator and businessman, didn't respond to an invitation to comment by press time. He was a biology and physics teacher in the district from 1979 to 1981, served on the school board from 1982 through 1991 and was a founding member of MAEF. He's been involved in a number of businesses, according to his Linkedin profile. He's currently chairman of a software company and director of an automation company. This spring Hansen became president of Hill Murray School, which is his alma matter. He also is a longtime adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas.

Q: Who are your captains, and why were they chosen? A: Captain selection has not taken place yet. Q: What competition are you most looking forward to this year, and why? A: Our players are always looking forward to our first home game of the season Oct. 5. It’s a time for them to shine in front of our home crowd. A: We will be looking for new fun ways to fundraise this fall.

ward to those meets because they provide great teambuilding opportunities. But our focus for our season and the reason we do all the training during the summer and the fall is for our championship meets — conference, region and the state meet. This is a historic year for Minnesota girls cross country: the race distance has changed from 4K to 5K, the same race distance the boys run. Minnesota was one of the last states to move the girls race distance to 5K. We are excited for the change and ready for the challenge.

Q: Who are your captains, and why were they chosen? A: Matt Lemay, Andrew Schmidt, Joe Dittel and Mike Williams, chosen because of their work ethic and how good of kids they are. Q: What competition are you most looking forward to this year, and why? A: Everyone we play is very good. We don’t get an off week. Q: Any special events or fundraisers readers should know about? to work hard and develop his game, I see an All-State nomination happening, maybe sooner than later. Both Noah and Kasey have bright futures and will gain valuable experience this season, with an eye on contributing heavily next season and beyond. Q: Who are your captains, and why were they chosen? A: The Four Horsemen of Ben Keller, Brendan Gefre, Chad Granger and Dylan Gast. They were chosen for their commitment to the program and leadership abilities both on and off the field. I expect them to continue to set a positive example to the rest of the team, and to the program as a whole, and to work with each other to move this program forward. Q: What competition are you most looking forward to this year, and why? A: This is a tough one. For me, it’s Stillwater as it’s been the top team in the conference for as long as I can remember, and my goal is to knock it off its perch. For the boys, they have targeted Eastridge and CretinDerham Hall as their main rivals. Eastridge has been a difficult match-up for this particular group of players ,and I think they are itching for a positive result. Our previous coach Ben Vulu has a son who is captain for Cretin-Derham Hall, so that will be a fun game as well, but on a more personal level. We expect the entire schedule to provide us with a competitive season and look forward to meeting each specific challenge presented. Q: Any special events or fundraisers readers should know about? A: The soccer program at White Bear Lake was started in 1965 by a man named Wolfgang Kraft. That makes this a special year as 2015 is the 50th anniversary of the program. The Bears were the first team from the Suburban Conference to join the Minnesota High School Soccer League. After leading the league for the first half of the season, White Bear ended up finishing sixth in its first year as a program. In 1967, White Bear defeated a strong Minnehaha Academy team 2-0 under the lights on the green grass of Price Field in front of around 1,500 fans. That was the first night game ever played in the history of Minnesota high school soccer. With the unique and lengthy history of this program to build off of, my hope is that this 50th anniversary team will grasp the opportunity to add its own chapter to the book and achieve something special of its own.

A: The section meet ,because that decides whether we make it to state or not. Two teams from the 16-team region go to state. We have been there seven of the last eight years. Head Coach Karl Jende Q: What will be your team’s greatest strengths this season? A: I expect us to be strong defensively first and, as the season progresses, to establish an offensive rhythm going forward. We’ve got a lot of speed across the defensive line, and that should help us play a more expansive game. We also have a lot of returning players through the spine of the team, which I expect to provide us with a stable foundation to build on. We have some potential game changers on the offensive side of the ball in Ben Keller and Brendan Gefre, whom I expect to link up well with each other. Our midfield has already developed a solid understanding and Chajli Thao, in particular, will be a senior leader for that line. On defense, we have a couple of complementary pieces in Kevin Kaufer and Spencer Johnson ,who are showing signs of forming a formidable center back, pairing with Ben Northwood and Kasey Schroeder who provide ample cover and competition. We also have some exciting youngsters in sophomores Noah Williams and Kasey Schroeder and freshman Loren Altman. Loren, in particular, has show he is an elite level athlete with a soccer IQ beyond what one would expect from a freshman. If he continues

Looks like we have some talented freshmen who should help us this year. The girls team is very talented; we should be very competitive in the conference. We are rated 13th in the state in the preseason poll. Q: Who are your captains, and why were they chosen? A: Boys: Elliot Campbell, Andrew Cooper, Eric Kvasnicka and Noah Mickus. Girls: Shanny Bartels, Elliie Gerber and Caitie McGauley. Q: What competition are you most looking forward to this year, and why? A: Conference championship, because I think we have a chance to win and have a lot of individuals who can win awards for both teams. Also the section meet, because we have a chance to go to state. It is also nice to see how much the kids have improved over the season.
the time of the section tournament, we think we’ll be a very strong team. Much will depend on our ability to stay healthy and establish consistent scoring. Q: Who are your captains, and why were they chosen? A: Seniors Tyler Pieper and Logan Morrison return as captains. Both are hardworking, unselfish, great leaders for our program. Q: What competition are you most looking forward to this year, and why? A: Our season will be challenging in that we’re a much younger team, yet we are playing a tougher non-conference schedule. North St. Paul and Simley both return very strong teams that will be Metro East favorites, but I expect our group to be very competitive there, and Como Park and Hill-Murray will be tough section opponents depending on our seeding and how we come together. We are also taking a day trip to Duluth Denfeld (Sept. 19) which should be a very good game and a lot of fun for the boys.

Head Coach Christine Anderson Q: What will be your team’s greatest strengths this season? A: We have a great core group of athletes back from last season who know how to compete. They have already been influential and spread confidence to the new girls. Our depth of singles players this year is exciting. Senior Kate Blanding is back with an all-court game and ready for a strong season. Olivia Kunshier is a fighter on the court. Elaine Franta is a ninth- grader who has the poise of a senior and is playing fantastic tennis. Ashley Rensted started the season with a 6-0 6-0 win against her opponent from Fridley. Returning doubles players Gabby Potthoff and Sam Engrav looked good in our first match. We are excited for our new additions as well: Sammy Waldvogel, Jessica Dang, Sarah Hirsch, Laurel Pierskalla and Hailey Campbell. Q: Who are your captains, and why were they chosen? A: Peyton King and Mary Larson. Peyton is a gifted hockey player, writer and an awesome leader. She is the energy behind our team. Mary leads with quiet confidence. She is sly on the court, organized and positive off court and a great role model for the younger athletes. The duo had an almost-perfect record last year, losing only their last conference match to Stillwater. They will do great things this season on and off the court. Q: What competition are you most looking forward to this year, and why? A: We are looking forward to going to Duluth at the end of (August) It is a time for bonding and great tennis. Q: Any special events or fundraisers readers should know about? A: We had an Aug. 25 car wash and (will age) a letter-writing campaign.

Head Coach Dave Muetzel Q: What will be your team’s greatest strengths this season? A: Our defense. We have seven starters back on defense from last year, and hopefully they can carry us until our offense can hit its stride. Q: Who are your captains, and why were they chosen? A: Brandon Hull and Quinn Lemke were chosen by their teammates at the end of last year’s season, and Jared Johnson was just voted (at the start of this season). They have all been great leaders for us on and off the field. Q: What competition are you most looking forward to this year, and why? A: Each year I look forward to the competition at each position. Our goal is to have competition for the spots left vacant because of graduation, and competition at the spots players are returning to. I think competition makes everyone better. Q: Any special events or fundraisers readers should know about? A: For our fundraiser we are selling Zephyr cards again. To purchase one, please contact the activities office.

Head Coach David Wald Q: What will be your team’s greatest strengths this season? A: Attitude, effort and depth. We have a roster of girls who give 100 percent on the field and have fun playing soccer together. When we sub, there should not be a lot of drop-off in talent. We hope to send a lot of players on the field this year. Q: Who are your captains, and why were they chosen? A: Selected by their teammates are Michelle Austin, Mackenzie Mason, Savannah Smith and Karleen Yapello. Q: What competition are you most looking forward to this year, and why? A: The team looks forward to all its games as a chance to work together. My personal favorite competition is White Bear Lake, since it gives so many local kids a chance to play soccer. We will have four levels playing on the same day. Q: Any special events or fundraisers readers should know about? A: Sept. 17 will be senior night and Oct. 1 will be our homecoming game.

Head Coach Tony Englund Q: What will be your team’s greatest strengths this season? A: We return five players with a lot of back line experience, and I expect we will be a good team on the defensive side of the ball. We graduated many good players who were critical to our run to (last year’s) Section 4A championship, particularly in the midfield and up top, so we are very young at some of those positions. Still, we are excited about the new boys who have joined the team and will spend some time finding the right combinations and gaining some experience. By

Nov. 12 at TBD: section meet at TBD Head Coach Justen Seim Q: What will be your team’s greatest strengths this season? A: The team took third in state last year, and we look to improve on that this year. We returned eight of our top 10 players, with Olivia Paradise back to play No. 1 singles. Our doubles have started the year (with) a combined 18-0 this year so far. Maggie and Grace Riermann, Erin Hoffman, Alex Kent, Emily Cooper and Emily Fraser have all spent time in the doubles line-up. We are a young team, and have only one senior. Our line-up is very flexible and people have played multiple positions already. The season is off to a great start; we started ranked No. 3. We are extremely deep and experienced. We (already) won the Stillwater Invitational tournament (Aug. 21) with five out of seven positions and defeated No. 2-ranked Prior Lake 4-3 Aug. 25. Q: Who are your captains, and why were they chosen? A: Senior Alex Kent and junior Erin Hoffman. Alex has been on varsity since before I was coaching and will be a great leader for this team this season.
Head Coach Leah Holmgren Q: What will be your team’s greatest strengths this season? A: Our team’s size, our divers and our non-freestyle events. This year we have 41 athletes; it will be great to watch our team take advantage of all the opportunities the season will provide. Q: Who are your captains, and why were they chosen? A: Elaine LaLiberte, Aubrey Olson, Kimmie Stakes and Allie Winter. They have been selected by team members for their leadership capabilities and caring personalities. Q: What competition are you most looking forward to this year, and why? A: We have many new team members and will be excited to see how they grow as athletes this year. We are also looking forward to our meets against Hill Murray and North St. Paul.
Head Coach Angela Vedders Q: What will be your team’s greatest strengths this season? A: We have tall players this year and are excited to be competitive (in) hitting and blocking. Our setter will be returning with three years of varsity experience, which will bring leadership to the team. Q: Who are your captains, and why were they chosen? A: Seniors Emma Richter and Taylor Anderson, chosen by their teammates Q: What competition are you most looking forward to this year, and why? A: This is such a difficult question to answer as we look forward to competing against each team we play. We look forward to playing White Bear in the battle for the lake. Q: Any special events or fundraisers readers should know about? A: That is such a difficult question to answer, as we look forward to competing against each team we play. We look forward to playing White Bear in the battle for the lake.

Sports Bears open with a flourish, stun Rangers By Mark Aguirre Contributing Writer WHITE BEAR LAKE — White Bear Lake spread the wealth in a seasonopening victory over rival Forest Lake in the Bears' home football opener Friday. Bear quarterback Carter Kaun had a pinpoint evening passing the football, and also got down and dirty with a trio of short touchdown runs in a convincing 43-23 triumph. Kaun was 8 for 11 passing for 87 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown to Rasaan Brakes that cemented the win, but wide receiver Brakes may have completed the most important pass of the contest. He hooked up with Sam Broberg on a first-snap gadget play that resulted in a 71-yard touchdown strike to a wide-open Broberg. The Bears took an immediate 8-0 lead when they tacked on two points from a spread formation on the extra point, and they were off and running. "We felt like we needed a lead, and it was worth a shot," offered Bear head coach Ryan Bartlett concerning the long scoring pass. "It worked in practice all week, so we figured worst case, it's incomplete. Best case, we're ahead and the crowd is into the game. It worked out well for us." White Bear led 22-7 at the intermission and 29-15 after three quarters. Both defenses were tested in a game that included 766 total yards. Bartlett said Kevin May and Matt Lemay led the way defensively. The Rangers racked up 401 total yards, fueled by 250 yards on 22 carries by Prince Eiden. Ranger quarterback Payton Ziedler was 8-for-14 through the air for 111 yards. Brakes also grabbed a 21-yard scoring pass from Kaun in the final quarter, and finished with three catches for 49 yards. Broberg had
four grabs for a team-high 96 yards, and running back Jessiah Majast had his second straight 100-yard plus performance with 141 yards. He had a 5-yard touchdown run to open the third-quarter scoring and give White Bear a big 29-7 lead. The Bears tote a 1-1 record to East
Ridge Thursday night. The Raptors (1-1) are soaring high after upsetting No. 4-rated Mounds View last Friday 28-21. East View is led by running back Dominik Condon, who tore through a tough Mounds View defense for 201 yards on 27 carries, including a touchdown.

Frye-led Mahtomedi whitewashes Tartan 21-0 By Mark Aguirre Contributing Writer MAHTOMEDI — The Zephyr football crew put together a solid offense to complement its outstanding defense in a victory over Tartan Friday night in its home opener. The Zephyrs rolled to a 21-0 triumph over the Titans, with junior running back Jalen Frye doing much of the heavy lifting. Frye dashed 46 yards for a touchdown in the opening quarter to give Mahtomedi a 7-0 advantage before quarterback Jared Johnson hooked up with wide receiver Chase Sullivan for a 9-yard score.
The Zephyrs led 14-0 at the intermission, and Frye capped the scoring with a 70-yard scamper to pay dirt in the final quarter. Sullivan kicked the extra point. He was 3-for-3 kicking extra points for the game. Frye shredded the Titan defense for 195 yards on just 14 carries. Johnson was 6-for-10 passing for 55 yards and a touchdown. Sullivan finished with four catches for 37 yards, and also picked off a Tartan pass on defense. Quinn Lemke and Jack Heinsch had outstanding games on defense to help secure the shutout win. Mahtomedi (1-1) travels to Henry Sibley Friday night. Sibley is also 1-1 in East Metro Red Division play after beating Hill-Murray 28-6 Friday.

I had to double check to see if it’s really been since August 22 that we had our last rainfall. Yes! I guess I’ve been too busy enjoying this great run of weather we’ve been having. You’ve probably noticed the return of the smoke from the fires out west. Skies turned a milky white color on Tuesday, August 25 and have stuck around. I can’t remember a time where we’ve had so much smoke in our skies. The smoke probably keeps our daytime high a few degrees cooler while keeping overnight lows slightly warmer. It’s really covering much of the Midwest, central plains and eastern Great Lakes. It has been making for some nice sunsets. My buddy Warren gave me his State Fair forecast to share. One hot day, one wet day and the rest near normal. Thanks Warren! Brought to you by

Man charged after reported home invasion A St. Paul man allegedly entered a White Bear Lake home and robbed a woman at gunpoint as payback because the woman's boyfriend hadn't paid him for marijuana. When later approached by police investigators, the 20-year-old reportedly sped away from them in his vehicle. Miguel Javier Martinez is facing three felony charges in connection to the July 20 incidents. According to the criminal complaints: A woman on Gardenette Drive reported she awoke a little after 2 a.m. and found Martinez in her bedroom. He allegedly pointed a gun at her, threatened to shoot her if she screamed and demanded she give him everything she had of value. He reportedly told her she was robbing her because her boyfriend had wronged him. Martinez made her put a gaming system, accessories and games into a bag and then he left with the bag, the woman reported. She believed he must have entered the residence though an unlocked service door. Later that day, two White

Bear Lake Police detectives went to the suspect's home and spotted him in a vehicle outside. When they identified themselves, Martinez sped away by driving across the backyard and a sidewalk, according to the complaint. A witness reportedly identified the driver as Martinez. The next day, Martinez reportedly called the WBLPD and admitted to an investigator he was the man who had fled but denied he had robbed anyone. He reportedly also told the investigator that the boyfriend of the woman who reported the robbery did not pay him for marijuana. An investigator used Internet records to track the stolen gaming system to a St. Paul apartment. On Aug. 17, the investigator executed a search warrant at the apartment and the occupant reported that Martinez had given the PlayStation 3 to his children. Martinez was charged July 29 with fleeing police. He was charged Aug. 19 with robbery and burglary.
