Our small town city

Richard Brainerd Mayor of Mahtomedi

Mahtomedi is just that! Our city of approximately 9,000 has the feel of a small town, yet is part of the Twin Cities metro area. Our citizens take great pride in our schools and the educational opportunities public and private available for our children. Mahtomedi also benefits from the many businesses, churches, and civic organizations that help Mahtomedi flourish. The city offers sport venues to support our baseball, softball, football, basketball, Lacrosse, hockey and most recently, pickle ball. We are extremely proud of the academic and athletic accomplishments of the students attending our Mahtomedi schools. Mahtomedi is situated on the east shore of White Bear Lake which offers residents fine beaches, fishing and picnicking opportunities. We support swimming lessons for our children at Mahtomedi Beach, a resource valued by Mahtomedi families. Neighborhoods are great places to live where our residents can meet at events such as Night to Unite which is held at host sites on various streets in all parts of the city. The city is connected by numerous trails and bike paths which weave in and out throughout many smaller lakes and ponds. They also connect downtown businesses and those of the city of Willernie. Our park system, including Katherine Abbott Park, is home to an enclosed facility owned by the city and used by many citizens for a variety of events. The Lake Links Trail section in Mahtomedi was recently completed and is being used to safely cycle,

walk or run around our section of White Bear Lake. The city supports an excellent Fire/EMT service, responding quickly to emergency and medical needs. We take pride in the outstanding public services provided by our employees who work extremely hard, including ensuring that our roads are maintained and open to travel, the snow is plowed, our finances are in order, our water system provides safe high quality water to our households and businesses, our city buildings are maintained and that we plan for the future of the city. Mahtomedi is extremely fortunate to have engaged citizens. Many volunteer to be members of our planning, parks, environmental and finance commissions. Residents also volunteer to serve and represent the city on the White Bear Lake Conservation District Board, the Lake Links Trail Association Board, Mahtomedi Hockey Association, as coaches for youth sports, as election judges and many use their “green thumb” to keep our flower gardens beautiful. The city is also home of the Mahtomedi Farmers Market every summer. We enjoy the beauty of all the environment has to offer, the closeness of our neighborhoods, the relationships with our schools and businesses and just being the “small town city” that we are. Mahtomedi is a wonderful city in which to live, work, have fun and enjoy family and friends. Mahtomedi Mayor Richard Brainerd

The city of ‘Lakes and Legends’

Dan Louismet Mayor of White Bear Lake

I want to welcome our newest residents and neighbors. We, as a city, strive to preserve our history, character, and charm — especially downtown. White Bear Lake is not just another “suburb” but rather a longstanding lake community with a rich history that is worthy of remembering and preserving for future generations. We are proud to maintain an environment where small businesses can thrive. We work hard to maintain and improve our parks, beaches, and shoreline for our residents to enjoy. Community events like Manitou Days and Marketfest celebrate our city and bring

6 WHITE BEAR COMMUNITY INSIDER 2023-2024

residents together. Without the many local volunteers and businesses that generously donate their time and talent, Manitou Days, Marketfest, and other community events would not be possible. For that, let me extend a heartfelt thank you to the many residents, volunteers, and local businesses that help make White Bear Lake the strong and vibrant community it is today. Your hard work and dedication to our city does not go unnoticed. I look forward to seeing everyone around town. White Bear Lake Mayor Dan Louismet

Manitou Days and Marketfest representatives kick off the summer festival season with a kiddie parade.

Marketfest and Manitou Days Marketfest Marketfest is a family-oriented festival to bring people to downtown White Bear Lake to promote the city’s businesses and enhance the sense of community. It takes place from the middle of June until the end of July. Approximately 4,000 to 5,000 people attend per week. There are two stages with live music and intermission acts each week. There are over 180 vendors onsite per week, featuring food trucks, arts & crafts, merchants & services, and nonprofit organizations. There is a wide variety of entertainment options, including theme weeks, the classic car show, pony rides, the kid’s activity zone and more. Theme weeks in the past have included — White Bear Lake

history night, Avenue for the Arts, biz kids/biz seniors night, public safety night, AFSA Science and agriculture night and an environmental resource expo. It takes the support and generosity of many people and organizations to make it all work, including the City of White Bear Lake Public Works, police department, fire department, TRIAD, CERT, volunteers, the Scouts, the Marketfest board, staff and volunteers. Manitou Days For over five decades, Manitou Days has been a staple event in White Bear Lake, bringing the community together. The three-week festival takes place in June and early July comprised of various events located throughout

the city. Festival highlights include an art fair, boat show, medallion hunt, kiddie parade, community garage sale, grande parade, beach dance and more. The parade travels through downtown White Bear Lake and along Lake Avenue, ending at West Park/ Memorial Beach. It also boasts a display of 100 floats and bands showcasing the best of the community. Following the parade, kick off your shoes and enjoy live music under the stars at the Beach Dance. Events are planned in the downtown area as well as the White Bear Shopping Center, on the lake itself, at Memorial and Ramsey County Beaches and at the area schools. Manitou Days ends on the Fourth of July with a fantastic fireworks display to music over the lake at West Park.

Area pickleball courts, including the one outside of Sunrise Park Middle School, attract players of all ages to what has become the fastest growing sport in the country. Additional courts have also been constructed along Bald Eagle Avenue in White Bear Lake.

The fastest growing sport keeps growing Part tennis. Part badminton. Part ping pong. The sport of pickleball has quickly become the fastest growing sport in America. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry, the number of those participating in the sport has grown over 159% in the last three years over the 8.9 million in 2022. The rapid growing sport has caused many communities to add additional courts to parks, community centers and

recreational centers. In White Bear Lake, there are four parks that include pickleball courts for the public to use. Lifetime Fitness is another location that offers pickleball to its members as well as lessons for beginners. The White Bear Lake pickleball club runs year round and is available to residents and nonresidents. The club reserves courts at the Sunrise Middle School from June to September

with various playing times for members to step out and enjoy a game or two. Pickleball is a social sport and community based. If you are a member of White Bear Lake pickleball club or just a beginner player, you can go to the courts scattered around the area, make new friends or meet up with old ones and enjoy a game or two of America’s fastest growing sport.

The department is a municipal paid-on-call department consisting of 32 firefighters responding out of one station. In 2013, the department ran 989 calls, the most in the department's history. the cities of Willernie and Lincolntown. In 1972, a merger occurred with the Mahtomedi Fire Department, resulting in the Mahtomedi Fire Department as we know it today. The merger led to the department responding out of two small stations until 1981. In 1981, the present fire station was completed and the equipment was consolidated into one location. White Bear Lake The White Bear Lake Fire Department is a combination department comprised of fulltime and part-time (paid on call)

members who work scheduled shifts and respond back to major emergencies. The department provides fire protection, rescue and Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance services to the city of White Bear Lake, White Bear Township, Birchwood, Dellwood and Gem Lake. The department provides fire inspection services for commercial and multi-family buildings, building plan review and preplanning for businesses throughout our response area. The mission of the White Bear Lake Fire Department is to serve and protect life and property within our communities.

Dining & Lodging

Diners have a variety of options, including along the lake shore, to enjoy an outdoor meal during the summer months.

Restaurants Visitors and residents alike in the area are spoiled when it comes to local dining options no matter the time of year. Sandwich shops, coffee houses, pizzerias, Mexican restaurants, steakhouses and so much more populate White Bear Lake and surrounding communities. Nearly all eateries in the area have opened their doors and indoor spaces for sit-down dining

presspubs.com

following the worst years of the coronavirus pandemic, though most also still take orders for pickup. Additionally, bars and breweries are back to serving thirsty patrons and dishing out pub food. The past few years have been a tough time for local restaurants and bars, as with many other types of small businesses. Owners eagerly welcome hungry customers and look forward to

filling them with high-quality food and drink all while providing great service. Locally owned dining establishments rely not only on an influx of seasonal visitors during summer months but also on regular patronage from people in their communities; keeping the local economy flush with local dollars is critical for them.
