ED’S NOTE
For over two decades now my life has been all about cars. I started out as a car mechanic apprentice, a small part-time job I thought I could do easily as I have been always excited repairing and taking things apart. And that was even before I was legally allowed to drive! Eventually, I earned enough money, bought my own car, modified my own car, and the rest is history. This magazine issue takes on a more personal note for me, showcasing a lot of my best car projects. Currently I work mostly on car graphics than modifying cars, after discovering my second passion which is designing. I feel that the visual appeal of cars takes a big chunk of what impresses us first before we want to know what’s under that hood. What do you think? Write me, I would love to know.

FEATURE: HYBRID R EVO X When Mitsubishi announced the Evo X was coming to Canada, tuners everywhere rejoiced. Even before the car hit the streets, the minds at Hybrid R Performance were making plans. Seeing an opportunity to be among the first to promote the Evo X, Hybrid quickly formed alliances with other stars in the Canadian tuner scene. They partnered up with T1R, a renowned Honda brand whose S2000 has won the Redline Time Attack at Buttonwillow, to develop parts for the Evo X and become the exclusive distributor of T1R’s Evo X lineup. Hybrid also joined up with Blitzgear to begin conceptualizing how the car would look.
Of course, all of the advance preparation would be useless without a car. Fortunately, with the help of New Type Mitsubishi, the boys at Hybrid were able to secure the very first Evo X in Canada. Their white 08 Evo X GSR actually arrived at the dealer in February 2008, but could not be released until Mitsubishi officially unveiled the Evo X at the Montreal Auto Show several weeks later. Once they took the car home, work began at a frenzied pace. At this point, Hybrid sought out Rocket Rally, home of the Subaru Canada Works rally team and is winner of both Canadian and North
American rally championships, for dyno and tuning expertise to help develop T1R products. Hundreds of hours were spent on the dyno testing different parts and set-ups; the result of which is the proven lineup of T1R performance parts for the Evo X. Meanwhile, the creative minds at Blitzgear were brain storming. The Evo X’s lines are naturally aggressive and high tech; they evoke images of a fighter plane. Both Blitzgear and Hybrid wanted a livery that would complement those characteristics and challenge their abilities. The digital camouflage pattern was a perfect fit. In use with both the Canadian

and US Army, the digital pattern is the latest in camouflage and has become a symbol of the modern soldier. It was also a great way to show their patriotism and support for our troops. The application of the decals was a pain staking process taking a full week, in addition to the weeks of preparation work by the graphics designers. The results speak for themselves, the car is so sssoso popular it can even be bought and downloaded in Forza!
In its photoshoot configuration, the Hybrid Evo X is set up for street drivable performance. With these basic power mods and tuning, the car puts reliably puts out over 300awhp on 94 octane pump gas. That is 50% more than stock already! (stock Evo X’s average around 200awhp on local dynos). The car is always changing though, as more parts are developed and tested. It’s a true team effort involving some of the brightest stars of the Canadian tuner scene!

Calvin Chan’s been a Fit fan since the day it arrived on Canadian soil. Employed by A&J Racing at the time, Calvin saw hidden potential in the then unlikely platform and decided to be among the first to step out of his comfort zone and take one on. With a history of building more aftermarket friendly cars like his previous EK, Calvin decided to roll the dice and concentrate on building the ultimate Fit. “Everyone around me was driving
“Everyone around me was driving AP1s, AP2s and DC2s, I just wanted something new and different. And I really wanted a four-door so the Fit seemed like good idea,” Calvin says. Give Calvin’s Fit a once over and you might not notice the subtle face lift that took place early on. The front end, side mirrors, and side skirts are borrowed from its Japanese counterpart and offer just enough change to separate his GD3 from the crowd but without overdoing it. The Fit’s handling and nosebleed ride height were both addressed right from the beginning. With a mindset to consistently hit weekend track days, Calvin wasted no time in sourcing a set of T1R Max B
dampers loaded with Swift springs. In fact, T1R fills most of Calvin’s spec list with goods from its catalog sprinkled throughout his build.Calvin assures us, “My setup is similar to the A&J Racing Time Attack Fit. I daily drive the car but I’ve tracked it numerous times without any issues. It’s really the perfect setup for doing both and having fun with it.” Calvin plans to sell the Fit soon and move on to a new project. The fact that it took just three short months for him to complete the car means that we probably won’t have to wait very long to see what he comes up with next.
