Embattled Premier Gordon Campbell has resigned as British Columbia’s leader. Tthe former-Premier himself admitted that the harmonized sales tax, HST, played a large role in his decision. “After considerable soul searching and discussion with my family I have decided to ask the BC Liberal Party executive to hold a leadership convention at the earliest possible date to select a new leader for our party,” said Campbell. “That [long-term interest] is what the decision on the HST was all about. Rolling Down the Tracks VIA Rail a Viable Business Travel Option

The friendly skies just aren’t as friendly anymore. Passengers have to remove their shoes, belt jackets and basically be subjected to any humiliating security procedure asked. And for what? A 20-year-old Asian man walked right through security wearing a silicon mask boarded a flight to Vancouver without a single airline representative raising an eyebrow. Well, business travelers, unless you’re fortunate enough to be flying on your own Bombardier luxury jet, I say abandon the skies and take to the rails. 14

madn Ever wonder who creates social media icons? I’ve noticed a subtle evolution in the little ‘F’ or ‘T’ strategically placed on what seems like every website on the internet. I mean, everywhere I look I see a social media icon—on television, email signatures, business cards. Why the hell does a business card need a social media icon? A Mashable article went as far as to claim that a paper business card ‘showcases your progressive approach to doing business.’ I think it showcases an infatuation with a fantasy world. Since when did Twitter followers equate credibility?

Tweet with a Tweet of his own. The commentator raised some interesting points, namely that we as a society have gone social media mad. She went on to question if the rebuking Tweet was needed, and if so, why. She presumed that because the satirist had 80,000 followers, damage control was needed. But I pose the question, since when did the number of Twitter followers correlate to credibility?

Does that mean because my Twitter account only has a tweet over 1,000 followers, that I am not credible? I say that’s preposterous. The office holiday party is not the time to put on your Saturday Night Fever outfit, test your drinking limits and get Julie from Accounting’s phone number. The office holiday party is a time to enjoy a few laughs with the team, reflect on a productive year and connect with coworkers on a personal level. Every environment is different and each company makes its own rules. It’s up to you to intuitively figure out what is appropriate and what will have you in front of the HR Director. That said, there are baseline rules to follow such as drink wisely and keep conversations professional. Ultimately, you don’t want to be hoping for a new job underneath the Christmas tree. You do want to build beneficial professional relationships. Follow these dos and don’ts, and be a good boy or girl at the office holiday party.

Party Time:

It is a career killer to miss out on the staff Christmas party. Do put aside your gripes about your colleagues and try and get into the spirit of things. Act as though your behavior is being observed every minute.

24

Limit Exposure:

The holiday office party is still work, which means less is more. Don’t walk into an office party halfway after through and don’t leave a Christmas party too early. However, don’t overstay by partying until the keg is done.

Drink and be Merry:

Do have one alcoholic drink and then one bottle of water, soft drink or juice. In addition, make sure you have a meal first before you start drinking. Moderation is key. Do keep your drink in your left hand, so you are not offering people a cold, wet handshake all evening. Smile and monitor your breath.

Say What:

Do keep conversations positive and don’t complain, whine or ridicule. Don’t discuss controversial subjects such as religion, politics and sex. Also, don’t spend all evening talking shop. Wasn’t 8 hours enough? And remember, tis the season of giving. Do show interest in others and be gracious and thank coworkers for all their contributions.

Mistletoe Manners:

If you are rolling solo, do keep your hands to yourself. Don’t flirt, and do avoid any other inappropriate behavior. Sexual harassment rules still apply at the office Christmas party. Remember, you have to go to work the next day.

This means a husband, wife or a long term girlfriend or boyfriend. Don’t consider the office Christmas party to be a first date venue. Furthermore, spouses or significant others are not always on the guest list for office parties. Don’t bring an inappropriate person as your guest, such as a therapist or escort.

Holiday Wrapping:

Thank the person responsible for the planning and coordinating of the party. Do consider sending a thank-you note to top management for hosting the party. The office party is a reward, so enjoy what could be the bonus you may get from the company.

Safe Sleighing:

Don’t end up in the newspaper the next day for an alcohol-related mishap. The authorities will connect the dots and figure out you attend the company sponsored office party. Toronto B-Class Office Space a Bargain Deal for COOs

Once the most coveted of locations, downtown Toronto has seen a steady stream of businesses moving to the outskirts of the city Written by John T. Connelly Every business is looking for ways to trim budgets and cut costs in today’s environment. While Execs scour expense reports line by line for wasteful spending and other inefficiencies, chances are they are overlooking the biggest overhead cost to operations: office space. Once the most coveted of locations, Bay Street, and downtown Toronto in general, has seen a steady stream of businesses moving to the outskirts of the city for various factors. Increasingly, Execs are turning to Class B locations to save a buck. The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International, an international federation

www.businessreviewcanada.ca December 2010

29

of more than 100 local associations and affiliated organizations, is the primary source of information on building management and operations, development, leasing, building operating costs, energy consumption patterns, local and national building codes, legislation, occupancy statistics, technological developments and other industry trends. BOMA groups office space into three classes in accordance with one of two bases: metropolitan and international. The classes are characterized based on a combination of factors including rent, building finishes, system standards and efficiency, building amenities, location/accessibility and market perception. Using BOMA definitions, downtown Toronto is classified as Class A, which means the ‘most prestigious buildings competing for premier office users with rents above average for the area.’ Clearly, it makes sense for operational expense evaluations to start with the office space. However, does it make sense to pay above market value for location? If it doesn’t, you’ll want to keep readings as you might be surprised to learn that many employees actually prefer work outside the hustle and bustle of metro Toronto. BOMA defines Class B as ‘buildings competing for a wide range of users with rents in the average range for the area.’ According to the Evton Capital Partners Commercial Real Estate Trends Survey, Class B office space outside Toronto’s downtown core is receiving increased attention from buyers and investors alike, and is poised for growth as escalating traffic congestion and longer commute times restrict easy access to the city centre. Aside from paying rent that reflects market value, employee attitudes are driving the increased attention. Nearly half of all Torontonians (43%) said they would be likely to change their place of employment in order to lessen their commute time. “As the city’s population continues to experience burgeoning growth, there is an increasing need for employers to consider where their employees live, 30

and how they commute to their workplace,” said Bill Evans, co-founder of Evton Capital Partners. “Proximity to public transit and short commute times trump the prestige of an address or the need to be in the heart of the city – a trend that will only increase in the future.” Evans’ assumptions seem to bear out; at least that’s what the Survey discovered. As the City of Toronto continues to struggle with traffic congestion and overall public transportation issues, more than three-quarters (76%) of Greater Toronto Area residents feel that it is likely companies will soon begin to set up offices away from the city’s core to make the workplace more accessible to employees. Ontarians identified Mississauga, Vaughan and Markham as the top three areas outside of Toronto’s city centre that will see a boom in commercial real estate in the next five years. Other findings in the report include: 45% of Torontonians rank the ability to take public transportation to work as an important factor when determining their place of employment; and more than one third (35%) of respondents in the Greater Toronto Area spend half an hour or more commuting in one direction. Conversely, only 20% of Southwestern Ontarians commute for more than 30 minutes.

All indications are that employees want out of the city and paying less for office space is in style. Those factors combined the exodus from downtown Toronto should continue for the foreseeable future. Christmas is only 3 weeks away. Have you thought about your office gifts? Reindeer games go high tech this year with these cool gadgets, creatively broken down to reflect the business world hierarchy. These high tech gifts are on everybody’s wish list (okay…almost everybody’s).

36 December 2010 www.businessreviewcanada.ca

President’s Club iPad $499 It’s a must-have these days, so make a splash and give some serious Christmas cheer to your Executive peer. Even though Microsoft is the business IT leader, social media (Apple’s specialty) is playing a larger role in today’s business world. And if nothing more, being seen with the cutting-edge device with 9.7-inch high-resolution screen makes an Executive look the part. Stargate 7 Inch Touch Screen Car Media System and GPS Navigator $369.99 We know Executives are always on the run, which makes this DVD+CD+VCD player, SD card slot, USB connection, iPod connection, and GPS Navigation with Dual Zone gadget ideal for the on-the-go Executives. Hands down, this one of the coolest gadgets on the market and will ultimately have your fellow board members asking where you got the new toy. i-Tech Virtual BT Wireless Laser Keyboard for PDA/Smartphone $594.99 Every Executive wants to turn heads, and this wireless virtual keyword will do just that. And if you need a practical excuse, just say it takes up less space…er…no space. Not much bigger than a match box, this astonishing device projects an infrared image of a full-sized keyboard onto any flat surface. Users can then type on projected keys as if typing on conventional keyboards. The i-tech BT Virtual Laser Keyboard can be linked to mobile phones, laptops or PDAs via Bluetooth, giving users all the benefits of a keyboard without the bother of having to haul one around.

A middle manager could only be so lucky to exert such control as easily. Palm Z22 Handheld $149.95 T he onc e so heralded Palm Pilot was a must have for business people and Execs alike, but certainly not anymore. Today, the Palm Pilot carries empty bravado, which makes it perfect for that reactionary middle manager who talks a lot but has nothing to say. Windows users can synchronize the Palm OS with their calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes with Microsoft Outlook. An IT specialist will probably have to do it, though. (Okay, low blow.)

Might as Well Work in the Mailroom Motorola H790 $29 Nothing says, ‘talk while working’ like a Bluetooth headset. The slim, easy to use, multipoint technology-featuring headset is one of the thinnest and lightweight devices ever made. from how miserable and redundant their job really is. And with a ridged back for easier grip and handling, the employee will also be able to perform some low-impact manual labour around the office. SoundClip iPhone Audio Booster $7.99 Okay…you may also have to get your employee a Tim Hortons gift card if you plan on giving this gadget for the holidays, especially when they ask what it is and you realize they don’t even own an iPhone because they can’t afford the mobile plan on their paltry salary. SoundClip iPhone Audio Booster has a tuned conical deflection chamber designed to make the audio from your iPhone clearer and also slightly louder. Sound waves are reflected toward, instead of away, amplifying iPhone audio by 10dB between 6kH and 20kHz and resulting in a cleaner, more accurate response. Outdoor LCD Window Thermometer $12.99 This is probably cruelest gift you could possible buy for your employee. This device mounts outside and features a large LCD digit display to show temperature reading. As your employee slaves over the mountains of paperwork and drowns in an endless sea of emails on beautiful, 80 degree day, the exact temperature—down to a tenth of a degree—will be staring more right back at them. CAMESE

Canadian Association of

Mining

Equipment & Services for E x port

Written by Maurice Bichsel

CAMESE is a trade association made up of Canadian member companies offering products and services to the mining industry. It was established in 1981 for the purpose of assisting members in exporting their goods and services. The association’s more than 300 corporate members across the country supply the entire mining industry spectrum including mineral exploration, mine development, mining, mineral processing, environmental monitoring, smelting and refining. The great strength of CAMESE is the members themselves. Most of these companies have been founded in Canada, initially to serve the Canadian mining industry, an important producer of mineral wealth. The Canadian mining industry is very demanding. As a result, the companies that serve it offer high value, advanced technology.

Maurice Bichsel Director of Intl Market Development, CAMESE

> E-mail Me

mailto:Bichsel@camese.org

In brief, CAMESE provides its members with a cost-effective international marketing approach that is complementary to the marketing and selling efforts of any single company. The association assists foreign buyers of mining equipment and services by finding Canadian sources for their requirements. In the present downturn of the global economy which affects the mining sector worldwide, Canadian mining suppliers are aiming to expand their markets boundaries. Canada is one of the largest foreign investor in the mining industry to many countries around the world. This is a strong indicator that the potential and the opportunities for the Canadian suppliers are real. It is essential for CAMESE to keep our member companies well informed about the changing climate of the mining industry in each www.businessreviewcanada.ca December 2010

market, to wisely motivate them in considering the new business opportunities and to assist them by actively participating at mining trade shows and other related events. Taking into account the long time presence of Canadian investment in all major mining countries, mining companies and suppliers in Latin America in particular, the growing potential and a better understanding of the global markets, we are observing a much stronger level of interest from our members for new markets. With a long mining tradition, Canada has developed its mining industry in terms of exploration, exploitation and consequently its exper tise in all aspects of mining activities. The large majority of exploration projects and mines development in Canada 50

is facing extreme conditions due to the harsh climate, the geological diversity and the access to very remote mineral deposits. In addition, underground mining has been a common practice by Canadian miners for many, many years. The challenges for Canadian mines operators, equipment suppliers and services providers are constant and complex. These are technical for deep underground mining, logistical for geographically remote projects, compliancy with extremely stringent regulations imposed by the Canadian government concerning personnel safety and environment friendly. Furthermore, the expertise of Canadian miners managing projects in 100 countries around the world is expected to be unequalled.

Industrial Drive Service

Industrial Drive Service Inc.

Controls its

Destiny

Industrial Drive Service sells, services AC/DC variable speed motor controls, soft starters, frequency drives and servo drives Written by John T. Connelly & Produced by Milan Sonegra Daryl Keys describes himself as someone who “did not work well as an employee of others.” Ironically, he is now the president of Industrial Drive Service Inc., a company in Hensall, Ontario, that sells and services motion control systems - equipment that makes larger machines work, and work well. Armed with ten years experience, Keys founded Industrial Drive Service in 1988, working out of his basement for the first three years. Eventually, he landed a project that was larger than his basement could handle, and he moved the business to its current location. Today, Industrial Drive Service sells and services AC and DC variable speed motor controls, soft starters, frequency drives and servo drives. The Company also manufactures custom control systems. 58

December 2010 www.businessreviewcanada.ca

Specifically, Industrial Drive Service is an advanced, custom design systems house. The Company designs, assembles/ manufactures, programs and installs DC and AC variable speed drive-motor control systems. Those systems are integrated into a wide variety of industrial applications, including metal processing lines, materials handling equipment, automation applications and process control machinery.

Valued Vendors

“When I started the business, I was doing service work and consulting. That’s where we still are,” says Keys. “A lot of people will say their business is profit oriented. We’re not. We’re people oriented. That’s why I like to come to work every

day. Relationships with not only customers, but with vendors, are very important.” While the Company values all relationships, a few standout. Industrial Drive Service is an authorized distributor for Parker/SSD and Reliance/Baldor and Vacon products. And when not selling, the Industrial Drive Service team can provide assistance with the repair of Reliance, Saftronics, Emerson and Control Techniques products. Allen-Bradley PLC’s are a specialty.

Even though Keys has an altruistic approach to the Company’s relationships, he is also cognizant of the fact that many much of Industrial Drive Service’s business is a derivative of relationships. The Company also partners with industry consultants. A considerable portion of revenue, about half, is from projects in Peru. “Those jobs we do in the mining industry in Peru are not projects we would secure on our own,” says Keys. www.businessreviewcanada.ca December 2010

With international offices, Knight Piésold focuses on meeting clients’ needs in hydropower, mining and environmental services Written by Meaghan Clark & Produced by Ali Siddiqui Though originally formed in 1921, “Knight Piésold” was established in Canada in 1975 by Bruce Knight, a former Rhodesia based employee who moved to Canada for work on the Mica Dam. Once Knight became a partner of the company originated by Dr. Francis Edgar Kanthack, he established Knight & Piésold in Vancouver and worked to include offices throughout North America. In 1990 both names were united to become today’s current designation, with global offices in Canada, USA, South Africa, Ghana, Peru, Chile, Argentina and Australia. “We are a full service company but we’re small and focused on what we do well,” says Jeremy Haile, President of Knight Piésold Ltd. in Canada. “We can really focus on client needs and not try to be everything to all people, but concentrate on specialist areas that we’re good at.” Knight Piésold is a 100 percent employee owned company with Canadian offices in Vancouver, British Columbia and North Bay, Ontario. Knight Piésold has about 150 employees in Canada and 650 professionals in

its global operations. Knight Piésold is one of the few small, specialist consulting companies left in the industry. “One of the trends we see is that smaller consulting firms are being bought up by the publically listed engineering companies,” said Haile. “We remain one of the niche players where we can focus on client service and differentiate ourselves from big companies.” Haile has been with the company since 1972 and graduated with an M.A. in Engineering Sciences and Economics from Oxford University, UK. Similar to Knight Piésold’s broad scope of consulting services available to clients, Haile’s background simulates the diverse team structure that goes into each project.

Flat Organization

Even with all its diversity, Knight Piésold is essentially a “flat organization,” says Haile. The company doesn’t operate within strict departments and has a limited hierarchal structure with an international Board of Directors. In addition to attending conferences and courses, senior staff members often host “Brown Bag Lunches” to share knowledge and assist younger employees in a “friendly environment” before presentations commence during formal meetings to clients. Ironclad Wabi specializes in castings, engineered fabrication solutions and machining for the mining, construction & steel industries Written by John T. Connelly & Produced by Milan Sonegra Wabi Iron and Steel Corp. is three separate, but interrelated, businesses specializing in castings, engineered fabrication solutions and machining for the mining, construction and steel industries. Since 1907, Wabi Iron and Steel Corp. has provided an extensive range of quality products in iron, steel and aluminum to Canadian and international industries. And since its inception, Wabi has been building rugged underground conveyances and loading systems for mines across Canada and around the world. The Company manufactures products for global distribution at a single facility in New Liskeard, Ontario and also has a sales office in the Greater Toronto Area; a warehousing/sales/distribution centre near Cleveland, Ohio; and sales/agent offices in Santiago, Chile and Lima, Peru. President Peter Birnie is keenly aware that entire communities depend on a viable Wabi Iron and Steel Corp for survival. He is also aware of his finite value to the Company and his role as steward. As steward, Birnie must, as his predecessor www.businessreviewcanada.ca December 2010

Part of planning for succession is constant reinvention and Company perception. “We are constantly looking at new ideas,” says Birnie. “We try to get our suppliers to keep us informed of things that are more efficient and more effective. We invest in tooling. In the last three months, we’ve brought in three new pieces of CNC equipment. Last year, we had Grant Thornton come in and look at all of our internal processes to help us change and give us advice. We challenged our whole group to look at what they were doing.”

Company’s core products and services haven’t changed much over the last century, just the processes to carrying them out. Wabi manufactures a wide range of general and abrasion resistant iron and steel castings, including ni-hard, chrome iron, grey iron, alloy and stainless steel for a variety of applications: wear resistant parts, components for smelters, mills, chutes, slurry pumps, crusher components and high impact parts. Additionally, Wabi custom designs, engineers and manufactures a wide range of equipment specifically developed for the mining, forestry, construction and general fabrication industries. Wabi’s strengths include superior engineering, full certifications, quality manufacturing and workmanship, after sales support and a track record of proven, dependable performance. Wabi’s

To a large extent, a Company can grow as quickly as its staff. You can always add numbers, but that’s not the point. My concept is that the average employee must use a larger percentage of their intellectual capital. Adding value is employees thinking, which improves productivity. We measure this through revenue per man-hour.” Adding value to the Company requires increasing employee’s value. Wabi Iron and Steel has existed for so long by virtue of successful succession planning, which includes management and employees. Skills have to improve everyday to mold the right candidates and employees. However, in today’s global economy, exporting is 76

WABI WORLDWIDE

Not only for Wabi, but Canada as whole, exporting must play a larger role. Today, 85 percent of Canada trade is tied to the US. To meet growth objectives, Wabi must increase its position around the world, particularly in regions that share Canadian industry, such as mining. “Part of succession and risk management is targeting customers in more than one country so that any economic set back in one country doesn’t hurt operations as a whole. We did survive a global recession, but that is because of the size of our markets,” says Birnie. “Guys like me, Wabi Iron and Steel, we have to create opportunities for our children and grandchildren. That requires the Company to target international business.”

Xeneca

Canadian power generation company proves that tackling out-of-the-box projects reap unprecedented benefits for renewable energy Written by Meaghan Clark & Produced by Ali Siddiqui

“Project development is a tricky business,” said Xeneca Power Development Vice President of Corporate Affairs, Mark Holmes. That doesn’t mean, however, that those tricky projects don’t get done. The Canada power generation company is currently focused on 19 renewable energy projects throughout the region, one of which is in its first stages of construction while the others are expected to begin building in 2012-13 with commissioning in the spring of 2015. Xeneca Power Development was founded when Canadian Renewable Energy Corporation became a lucrative takeover target by a bigger

company and was bought out in 2005. CREC’s original principals – Patrick Gillette and Uwe Roeper, both experienced renewable energy developers - reformed their company following the sale. Today the company’s ten permanent staff works with hundreds of contractors to develop water powered energy facilities throughout Ontario.

DEVELOPMENTS

Xeneca currently has 19 contracts with the Province of Ontario through the Ontario Power Authority’s Feed in Tariff (FIT) program, and another 14 in a queue awaiting Economic www.businessreviewcanada.ca December 2010

Connection Test. Xeneca currently represents about half of all the water power being developed under the current power procurement Policy in Ontario, where the removal of all coal fired electrical generation from the province by 2014 has been mandated. Currently underway is the McGraw Falls project west of Thunder Bay, which, according to Holmes, is a “template” project that will provide the company a model of where efficiencies can be defined and developed during the initial process. “We’ve a development template approach where the first [project] will be carefully monitored and where there are efficiencies we’ll capitalize on them, and where there are inefficiencies we’ll correct them,” he continued. “By building the template we’ll apply that to other projects and that will help to achieve a planned approach that is bred from the successes we’ve achieved at McGraw. The template will evolve with each of projects, with the intent of improving with each development” Efficiencies may also be realized by

said President Gillette. “The basis for water power is already established. What makes a difference today is the incidental.” Technological development isn’t completely out of the ordinary. Penstock, a metal pipe used to bring water from the control structure down to the powerhouse, or rubber inflatable dams used in a concrete base, are all recent developments. Gillette, who has decades of experience, knows that there are two reasons that really keep renewable energy projects running. “One is the design of the actual, physical power plant and [the other] is different ways of constructing,” he said. “There are a lot of new technologies, but the basis of ours is the same, which is that we’re putting a water control structure into the river and then drawing that water down, and passing that water through to a generating station.” And once these facilities are built, they have up to 100 years of use and then can be rebuilt.

as work related demands grow. Right now, with just one project “shovel ready,” the base of Xeneca’s staff is knee-deep in environmental approvals. Eventually, when the time has come to hire engineering, project management and construction teams, the team will grow naturally. The management team, which has a combined 60 years of experience in the energy development sector, is still learning by doing, says Gillette. “Training is trial by fire,” observes Holmes. Most of the time, individuals hired have a core set of skills, we give them the support we can,” added President Gillette.

THE FUTURE

The current economic climate hasn’t directly affected Xeneca’s work, though the company has been negatively impacted by inflation in costs associated with construction materials including concrete, steel and labor. “We don’t know why,” says Gillette. “It seems EMPLOYEES it’s going up, not down, with the inflationary With just ten employees, there is a lot to be pressures .” Nonetheless , Xeneca will done. Both Holmes and Gillette are confident continue to work toward the completion of that an evolution of growth will happen naturally their remaining projects. 82

Statistics ”Once the current suite of projects is completed, we’re not sure what will happen after the five year window for development closes,” says Holmes. “The Ministry of Natural Resources is reworking its site release policy to merge with the Green Energy Act and with the provisions of the power authority’s Feed-in Tariff program.” The potential could lead to a new round of site release in areas deemed viable, which would then be available to developers. Only time will tell whether the extension will occur and all of the company’s decisions have been left up to the discretion of its experienced Board of Directors.

To reduce falls on jobsites, Chemco put in place a safety strategy that included retractable lifelines, preventative maintenance, user friendly equipment and the practice of girth hitching

While this reduced injuries, Chemco re-evaluated its procedures to further improve the safety of its employees. The company relied on feedback from employees to introduce more appropriate cable stripping tools, which eliminate the need for knives in many situations.
