2020 Travel Guide

WELCOME TO WHITEFISH, MONTANA Dear Traveler, Welcome to Whitefish! Our small mountain town is a special place I am proud to call home. Our vibe here is one of a big heart and friendly nature — a town that will surprise even seasoned travelers with our cultural options and cuisine, surrounded by millions of acres of public land. Exhilarating experiences by day and relaxing hospitality by night await you. We welcome people from around the world and hope you will enjoy exploring our beautiful backyard and meeting our friendly people. We appreciate travelers who will help us sustain the special character of Whitefish — our environment, heritage, aesthetics, culture, and the well-being of our residents. What does this mean for you? Please patronize our locally-owned businesses, showcased here in this travel guide. Look for handmade local gifts in our Central Avenue shops. Hire a local guide to show you the best of Whitefish and Glacier National Park. Look for public transportation options like our local S.N.O.W. Bus. Find that small, out-of-the way business where you’ll get to know the owner. Join us for a local celebration like Winter Carnival. Rent a bicycle and wander our local pathways. Think local. And above all, please tread lightly. When you return from your adventures, tell your friends! But maybe keep that local secret spot you discovered a little bit secret and join us in keeping Whitefish special for your next visit and for those of us who call it home. We do hope you come back again and again. The door is always open in Whitefish. We can’t wait to show you around.

Mayor John M. Muhlfeld local resident for 25 years

AUTUMN ADVENTURES

FALL IS PRIME TIME in Whitefish—sunny and warm with trails waiting to be explored and rivers and lakes to paddle on with hardly another soul in sight. The western larch turn a brilliant gold and snow dusts the high peaks, providing a breathtaking view for hiking, biking and paddling around Whitefish and in Glacier National Park. Indulge culinary senses when local farms celebrate the harvest with farm-to-table dinners.

A PERFECT DAY With an out of town friend visiting Whitefish for the first time, I aim to show off the perfect fall day in Whitefish. First things first… breakfast at the Swift Creek Café for one of their famous scrambles. Fueled up, we head out to the Bar W Guest Ranch and saddle up for a two hour trail ride – a leisurely amble through dappled sunlight Photo © Marc O’Brien, The Whitefish Trail

reflecting on golden larch and aspen. We decide to do a bit of shopping before lunch, so we hit Central Avenue for some unique Made-in-Montana gifts to take home as souvenirs. A grab-n-go lunch from the Wich Haus makes for a perfect picnic at City Beach – the afternoon sun sparkling off of Whitefish Lake. Needing to burn some calories, it’s off to the Swift Creek Trailhead of The Whitefish Trail at the head of Whitefish Lake – from there a 2.5 mile hike takes us to Smith Lake where we spy a family of turtles sunning themselves on a fallen log. Before dinner, a stop at the Sky Bar at Casey’s Pub is in order to take in the fall colors, crisp air and a signature cocktail. We walk to Tupelo Grille where the sounds of jazz accompany our meal, capped off with the best Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée west of the Mississippi. A perfect fall day it was. ~ Sarah S., Office Manager at Explore Whitefish

WINTER WONDERS

THE PEAKS OF GLACIER NATIONAL PARK are the backdrop for winter adventure. Home to world class skiing and snowboarding at Whitefish Mountain Resort, Whitefish also offers cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowcat skiing. Snuggle up for a horse drawn sleigh ride, or pretend to be an Iditarod musher on a dog sledding expedition. Off-snow adventures abound with fitness studios, ice skating, great shopping and dining. A PERFECT DAY I peek out the window and see that a few inches of fresh snow

A quick phone call to the Snow Report line at Whitefish Mountain Resort confirms what I had already suspected — Powder Day!

are covering the sidewalk! A quick glance at the Snow Report at skiwhitefish.com confirms what I had already been suspecting— Powder Day! I quickly get dressed and head out the door for what is certain to be a memorable day. A quick stop at Fleur Bake Shop for a coffee and some pastries will help get the blood moving as I dream about the powder turns that will soon be mine. I head up to the street to grab a pair of demo skis at Great Northern Cycle & Ski—12” of fresh snow is going to require some true powder skis. Demo skis in hand, I catch the S.N.O.W. Bus for a free ride up the mountain to join the party. The next few hours are filled with powdery turns, high fives and endless smiles. By late afternoon, my legs are shot and my stomach is growling. Another easy ride on the S.N.O.W. Bus back to town leads me to Great Northern Brewing Company for a sandwich and a local brew. As I stand in line to grab another round, I can’t help but chuckle when I glance around the brewery and notice I’m not the only one still in ski boots. Just another perfect winter day in Whitefish! ~ Dan H., Bartender at Great Northern Brewing Company

SPRING DISCOVERY

SPRING IS THE SECRET SEASON in Whitefish. Snowplows push their way up Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road allowing scenic bike rides and casual hikes before the alpine road is opened to motor vehicles. The waterfalls are in full action and the motor-free road provides a quiet gateway into the heart of the park. Rent a paddleboard or kayak and float lazily down the Whitefish River as it meanders through town or meet up with a guide to find the perfect fishing hole. The Whitefish Trail is in prime condition for hiking and mountain biking as spring blooms line the trail. Photo © Montana Office of Tourism & Business Development

A PERFECT DAY I start my day by riding my townie over to Montana Coffee Traders

The waterfalls are in full action and the motor-free road provides a quiet gateway into the heart of the park.

for a cup of coffee and breakfast burrito. It’s a great place to check emails and finalize details for the day’s tours. On my way out the door, I pick my order of sandwiches and cookies for our guests that will be riding the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road with us today. I head back to the office, grab the shuttle van and our guides, and head over to Glacier Cyclery to load our guest’s rental bikes (by the way, you can now e-bike Going-to-the-Sun Road!). After picking up our guests from their lodging in Whitefish, we head to Glacier National Park. We arrive in the park and start our casual pedal along the road — a real treat as the portion we are on is open exclusively to bicycles and foot traffic (no cars!) through spring until late June. After enjoying our Montana Coffee Trader’s sandwiches and cookies at “the Loop” we continue onward and upward until we reach the snow plows, passing jaw dropping views of mountains, waterfalls and scenic overlooks that can be a challenge to experience during the busy summer months. We make the exhilarating descent to our shuttle vehicle and head back to Whitefish while sharing stories about the day’s adventures. Later that evening, the family and I walk downtown to Abruzzo Italian Kitchen where I celebrate another day in paradise with the Seafood Pasta and one of their world famous Old Fashioneds. A perfect ending to a perfect spring day! ~ Kurt S., owner of Whitefish Tours and Shuttle

SUMMER ESCAPE

Photo © Brice Shirbach

SEEMINGLY ENDLESS DAYLIGHT gives ample time to experience Whitefish. Millions of acres of protected state and federal lands surround Whitefish, offering miles and miles of scenic roads and trails to explore. For water enthusiasts, a variety of lakes and rivers provide ample opportunities to kayak, paddleboard, raft and fish. Live music and festivals round out fun-filled days.

SUMMER HUCKLEBERRIES AND SUNSETS I’m awakened by my kids jumping into my bed—the sun is up and they’re ready to tackle the day. We leave the house and stop off at Fleur Bake Shop for pastries and snacks to get us through the day. We head up to Whitefish Mountain Resort and the kids head straight to the alpine slide. After two exhilarating trips down the alpine slide, we hop on the chairlift to head up to the summit to hike around, play in the woods, find bugs, and harvest some huckleberries until our bellies are full and our fingers are purple. While the kids go off on a zipline adventure, my wife and I rent some mountain bikes and spend the afternoon cruising through the bike park, alternating laps on The Summit Trail and Kashmir. For the cool down, we head home and ride our bikes to City Beach for some Sweet Peaks Ice Cream and a swim. As we watch the sun setting on Whitefish Lake while eating ice cream, it strikes me that

A REASON FOR EVERY SEASON SETTLED ALONG THE EDGE of Whitefish Lake and in the shadows of spectacular mountain ranges, Whitefish has endless opportunities for outdoor recreation and fun, familyfriendly adventures. Strap on daypacks for a hike in Glacier National Park, or go on a guided rock climbing or backcountry ski tour. For those who never leave golf clubs at home, Whitefish is home to the popular 36-hole Whitefish Lake Golf Course (which converts to the Glacier Nordic Center in the winter). Saddle up for a horse-trail ride, and in winter, snuggle up for a sleigh ride dinner.

WATCH FOR WILDLIFE One of the wonderful aspects of recreating in the mountains around the small mountain town of Whitefish is the fact that we are not at the top of the food chain. That’s right, we live and recreate among bears, wolves, wild cats, and more. They are beautiful, but dangerous if you do not pay them the respect they deserve.

WILDLIFE SAFETY TIPS + Hike In Groups + Always Carry Bear Spray + Make Noise + Secure Your Food & Garbage + Be Aware of Your Surroundings + Never Approach a Wild Animal Photo © Brian Schott, Whitefish Lake Golf Course

+ Keep a Safe Distance - 300 feet for bears, wolves, mountain lions - 75 feet for goats, sheep, elk, moose, deer For more info and tips, visit explorewhitefish.com

WILDLIFE VIEWING SPOTS + Drive up to Logan Pass in Glacier National Park for mountain goats and bighorn sheep. + Grizzly and black bears can be spotted all over the area, but are more commonly viewed in Glacier National Park. + Herds of elk can usually be seen in the fall on the way up to Whitefish Mountain Resort or along the North Fork Road while driving up to Polebridge. + The occasional moose can be found in the heavily vegetated riparian areas of lakes and streams, or foraging in the high alpine valleys.

WHERE THE ARTS COME TO LIFE

ARTS AND CULTURE are intensely vibrant in Whitefish. Professional Broadway actors headline theater performances and art galleries exhibit both local and national, wellknown sculptors and painters. Monthly gallery nights, from May through October, encourage mingling and connecting with featured artists while local musicians provide the evening soundtrack. Live music, theatre and readings are a mainstay, with regular performances by both national and local performers. Two theater companies produce high-quality plays and musicals, and the symphony brings classical music and chorale performances. The award-winning local literary journal hosts poetry and literature readings by renowned authors and emerging voices.

Or, watch for stargazing events in Glacier National Park, at the summit of Whitefish Mountain Resort or other locations throughout Flathead Valley. Whitefish also has a Dark Skies Ordinance. This keeps light pollution down and allows for great stargazing from within the city.

AWARD-WINNING CUISINE, world-class wine selections and great service—all reasons Whitefish exceeds dining expectations. Culinary discoveries abound, offering nearly every variety of style and fare. Many chefs pride themselves on use of fresh, local and organic vegetables, fruits, and meats. Each dining experience is an opportunity to savor the local flavor. After a satisfying meal, mingle with the locals at one of the many bars and lounges that line downtown. Sip a pint of craft beer or enjoy a sunset cocktail. From acoustic guitar at a cozy bar to a full band or DJ to dance the night away, live music can be found almost every night of the week.

DRINK THE SCENERY Whitefish is home to two micro-breweries and one micro-distillery that all use locally-sourced ingredients. Unwind at the Great Northern Brewing Company, which features the signature favorite brew Huckleberry Wheat or the Frog Hop Pale Ale, sourced partially from locals' garden hop plants. of seasonal organic produce to complement its house-made spirits, syrups and specialty Coffee Liquor using Montana Coffee Traders cold brew. Bonsai Brewing Project focuses on small batch, specialty beers, using local ingredients and interesting techniques. IPAs, sours and barrel aged beers are some of their favorites.

FOODS FROM THE REGION + Flathead cherries are grown along the shores of Flathead Lake, where the lake-effect keeps temperatures a bit more moderate than other parts of the region. Berries ripen in July. + Wild huckleberries ripen throughout July and August from the valleys up to the mountain tops—a close cousin of the blueberry. + Edible mushrooms such as the morel, are found in nearby forests, and are abundant in spring and early summer. + Elk, bison, and various fish are all popular regional offerings.
