THE ONE DAY OF THE YEAR BY AL AN SE YMOUR

Friday 27 February 8pm (Q & A session)

Director Denis Moore With Peter Hardy, Christine Keogh, Don Bridges, Luke Clayson, Olivia Solomons

Saturday 28 February 2pm & 8pm

“ It’s Anzac Day this week, that’s my day, that’s the old Diggers’ day.”

2 hrs 30 mins (including interval)

What is the meaning of Anzac Day? For war veterans like Alf Cook and his friend Wacka Dawson, it’s the chance to commemorate history, celebrate heroism and conjure national pride. For Alf’s son Hughie, Anzac Day flies the flag for a very different reality, one that brings the dignity of our diggers to its knees and into the gutter with one too many down the pub. At its heart though, The One Day of the Year explores the universal theme of father–son conflict and is one of the great family dramas of Australian theatre.

Warning: Contains strong language and adult themes (15+ years)

Sparking huge controversy on its release in the 1960s, the play incites as much passion now as ever and looks at our national service through the eyes of generation, class and character. On the centenary of the Gallipoli landing, Alan Seymour’s landmark play returns with a fresh take on this truly Australian classic.

Seymour’s writing, with its innate humanity and gritty sincerity, is still vigorous. The One Day of the Year survives the decades with triumph. Herald Sun

WOT? NO FISH!!

Tuesday 10 March 8pm (Q & A session)

A collaboration between Danny Braverman & Nick Philippou Writer & Performer Danny Braverman Director Nick Philippou

Wednesday 11 March 1pm

This is a true story of love that will stay with you long after the final words are spoken. In 1926, shoemaker Ab Solomons sketched on the wage packet he gave to his new wife Celie, a ritual he then continued weekly for the next 50 years. Throughout their marriage these wage packets depict with remarkable honesty the ups and downs of their life together.

Thursday 12 March 8pm 1 hr 20 mins (no interval)

After Ab’s death this incredible story was discovered by his great-nephew Danny Braverman. Through Danny’s solo performance we are invited into the Solomons’ world; from falling in love to quarrels about fish balls, it is a funny and moving journey against the backdrop of a changing 20th century London. Premiering to critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013 this captivating story is told through a different lens and over 3000 wage packets.

This is a show about love that has been made with love. The Guardian The touching and powerful imagery brought me close to tears and put my heart in my mouth.✫✫✫✫✫ Broadway Baby Enlightening… not just for the belly, but for the mind and heart. Time Out

KELLY

Tuesday 21 April 8pm (Q & A session) Wednesday 22 April 8pm 1 hr 20 mins (no interval) Warning: Strong coarse language, sexual references and simulated violence (15+ years)

Writer Matthew Ryan With Steven Rooke, Kevin Spink, Anthony Standish Director Todd MacDonald Set Designer Simone Romaniuk Lighting Designer Ben Hughes Composer & Sound Designer Guy Webster Fight Director Niki-J Price Unmasking the man in the iron mask. Ned Kelly sits in his prison cell. Tomorrow he is going to hang. A wounded beast in a cage, defiant till the end. A priest enters to give him his last rites and it is revealed to be Dan, Ned’s younger brother, believed burnt to death at Glenrowan. Dan is desperate and needs one last thing from his older brother but Ned stands firmly against him. So begins a brutal confrontation by two titans of Australian history. Facing the sins of their past, each blames the other for their downfall and neither will escape unharmed. This makes for a brilliantly charged premise, beautifully staged and weaving Kelly fact, theory and myth while exploring masculinity, brotherhood and the dangerous dynamic of mateship.

Kelly is a subtle, smart imagining of Ned Kelly’s last night alive, charged with unfulfilled potential and torturous regret, and deeply moving to the bitter end. ✫✫✫✫✫ Brisbane Times

An Aboriginal man dies in police custody. Members of the Palm Island community make a direct challenge to police power and the police station is torched. Eight years later, the people of Palm Island continue to demand real justice, and all the while life continues. As raw as it is confronting, the show stars three Islanders in their first theatrical appearances. It combines documentarystyle footage with conversation, reportage, stories and images, told in their own words. Beautiful One Day captures the horrible reality of an unnecessary death and the remarkable humanity, wisdom and determination of Palm Islanders to forgive. ILBIJERRI Theatre Company and Belvoir came together in 2011 over a shared sense of outrage at the injustices surrounding the death of Mulrunji Doomadgee. Prompted by the Palm Island community, they have looked for a way to turn anger into real understanding and new possibilities. The result is Beautiful One Day – a theatrical documentary about the irrepressible life and times of Palm Island.

Friday 10 July 8pm (Q & A session) Saturday 11 July 2pm & 8pm 1 hr 5 mins (no interval) Warning: Health themes, references to suicide, some moderate language, onstage smoke effects (15+ years)

Writer Alana Valentine Director Wesley Enoch Set Designer Simone Romaniuk Composer Brett Collery Lighting Designer Ben Hughes Tour Produced by Performing Lines A yarn to warm your heart (and your head). The Annual Alice Springs Beanie Festival is fast approaching and Tilly Napuljari is running out of time to finish her new creation and enter it for judging. Nessa Tavistock, a Sydneysider, has run away to the Red Centre to escape her own problems back in the big smoke. With time and talk, they realise that despite their differences in language, surroundings and upbringing, they are not so different after all. In making their beanie together, Tilly and Nessa’s stories become entwined and made into a thing of beauty - row by row, colour by colour, yarn by yarn. Head Full of Love is the story of these two remarkable women and the unlikely but inspiring friendship which forms between them. It invites you to look differently at the possibilities of the humble beanie: a much-loved everyday item, and an extension of ourselves and the everyday lives we wear.

Bell Shakespeare

HAMLET

Wednesday 29 July 8pm Thursday 30 July 10.30am & 8pm 2 hrs 40 mins (including interval)

By William Shakespeare With Josh McConville & Matilda Ridgway Director Damien Ryan Dark acts result in darker consequences. And there is little that’s darker and more complicated than the act of revenge. A family torn apart by murder, a son burdened with the truth and the task of avenging his father, and a country on the brink of war. Anguish, passion and desperation collide in this tragic telling of Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, who is tormented by the impossibility of his dilemma, and who remains one of theatre’s most fascinating characters. Following the critically acclaimed Henry V in 2014, Damien Ryan will deliver a new production of Hamlet, infused with the passion, contemplation and emotion that Shakespeare’s compelling poetry cries out for. Josh McConville and Matilda Ridgway will delve into the depths of the complexity, violence, philosophical reflection, madness and maddening seduction of Hamlet.

There’s a reason the name Bell Shakespeare has become synonymous with quality theatre. ArtsHub

AUSTRALIA DAY WRIT TEN & DIRECTED BY JONATHAN BIGGINS

Friday 28 August 8pm (Q & A session) Saturday 29 August 2pm & 8pm 2 hrs 20 mins (including interval)

Everyone wants a piece of the party pie in this modern ripper of a comedy. The country town of Coriole is getting ready for Australia Day – a time to crack open a frothy, stick a snag on the barbie and celebrate what it means to be a true blue Aussie. The Australia Day committee is gearing up to put on the town’s biggest party – but they have a few issues of their own to sort out first. With everyone from the Greens to the local mayor to the CWA wanting a piece of the party pie, it’s proving hard yakka to work out what an Aussie celebration should look like. Nothing is sacred as the national identity is put through the ringer in this thoroughly modern comedy! Will the day be fair dinkum after all? Or are there too many roos loose in the community hall? Written and directed by the acclaimed playwright and Sydney Theatre Company satirist Jonathan Biggins of the famed The Wharf Revue, Australia Day will give you a new take on our national day.

There’s something to offend just about everyone in Jonathan Biggins’ deliciously light and perfectly pitched jokefest. Biggins knows his audience well and sets about ribbing all of them, young and old, blue-rinse and red ragger. The Australian

BEYOND

Director & Creator Yaron Lifschitz with the Circa Ensemble Friday 11 September 8pm Saturday 12 September 8pm 1 hr 10 mins (no interval)

There is a line between human and animal, between madness and sanity, between logic and dream… We invite you to step over this line…and go Beyond. Beyond is warm, surreal and unexpectedly moving. Blending dynamic circus acts like trapeze and Chinese pole with multiple rabbit heads, rubiks cubes and blindfolds, set to a bewitching mix of show tunes, ballads and electronica, this creation delights and enchants. Beyond is set on multiple stages within stages – small red-curtained worlds that offer a glimpse of this rich and empathetic world. Maybe we are in a cabaret, a zoo, an asylum or on a stage. Seven artists have gathered to express their inner selves and to connect with each other and the audience. Over the course of Beyond we meet the artists, marvel at their skills, enter their personalities and emerge into a strangely beautiful and curiously tender world. A sell out in 2014, don't miss your chance to go Beyond.

A masterpiece that sparkles, like the finest champagne. Berlin Morgenpost Audiences have come to expect the earth from Circa… Beyond gives them the moon as well. The Stage, UK

MASTER CLASS

Tuesday 22 September 8pm (Q & A session)

By Terrence McNally With Maria Mercedes Director Daniel Lammin Associate Director Cameron Lukey

Wednesday 23 September 1pm & 8pm

Inspired by Maria Callas’ famous 1973 visit to New York’s Juilliard School of Music, Master Class is an insightful look into the life and art of opera’s most beloved and controversial diva.

2 hrs (including interval)

At the time, Callas’ own career singing on the world’s great stages had drawn to a close, her voice a shadow of its former glory. Four years later, Callas’ death at the age of fifty one sealed her legend as a real life tragic heroine. Master Class sees Callas prod and provoke her students in a searing, funny and touching depiction of a woman who knows what it takes to walk the high wire and the sacrifices required to attain the dream. Forty years later, Callas’ story as a woman forced to choose between professional power and a personal life remains as relevant as ever.

Maria Mercedes is Callas. She is remarkable… Hers is the kind of astonishing performance that leaves the actor and the script invisible, if not forgotten. Aussie Theatre It’s hard to imagine how anyone could leave this masterfully directed play without feeling affected by the soul of this great artist. Theatre Press
