communications tasks and soon realised that was what I wanted to specialise in. I think this comes from a deep need to ensure everyone has equal access to information.”
“Being able to work in communications and help the community at the same time is what makes this role truly enjoyable. Not only do I get to spend my day writing, it’s knowing that what I write makes a difference.”
A typical day for Brittany involves writing responses to media enquiries and creating engaging written content for multiple channels that educate, inform and spark change in the community. She also works collaboratively with her team on strategic communications initiatives.
Brittany is particularly passionate about writing in a way that is accessible and that advocates for our diverse community.
“I believe words have the power to equalise or polarise. Having the unique opportunity to write in Council’s voice is a chance to advocate for our community. I write in plain English to ensure the 61% of Whitehorse residents born overseas have equal access to Council services and benefits.”
Volunteer as a parkland volunteer or Parkland Advisory Committee member
We are looking for people who are passionate about volunteering on a Parkland Advisory Committee.
This is the perfect opportunity for anyone who is looking for something meaningful to do in their spare time, is wanting to supplement their studies or someone with specialised environmental knowledge wanting to educate others.
Whitehorse City Council has 12 Parkland Advisory Committees that work to protect and maintain our beautiful parks and reserves. Committees run local working bees, host Committee meetings and work with Council for the improvement of local parkland.
Volunteering has wide-reaching benefits for people who dedicate their spare time for a cause. Just a few hours of volunteer work can make a difference to your happiness and mood. Our parkland volunteer groups offer many social benefits too.
Appointments to Parkland Advisory Committees only happen once every three years so now is the time to get involved. Applications are now open until Friday 9 June.

Happy National Volunteer Week 2023!
This month Whitehorse recognises and celebrates National Volunteer Week from 15 May – 21 May.
The dedication of our volunteers to their program doesn’t go unnoticed to us or the community they serve.
Whitehorse volunteer roles range from gardeners, event planners, gallery attendants to official members on Committees for Youth, Arts, Cultural Diversity, Parks, Reconciliation and Disability Advocacy.
Whitehorse City Council Mayor, Cr Mark Lane says “National Volunteer Week is a chance for the whole community to celebrate and recognise the vital work of volunteers.
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of our community – changing lives and connecting with individuals through their commitment to assisting in delivering council services and programs.
“So, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our volunteers for taking time out of your busy lives to make change in the lives of others. Thank you for sharing your valuable expertise and for choosing to share your kindness with your community.”

Meals on Wheels in Whitehorse –more than just a meal
The Federal Government has announced a new provider to deliver meals to older residents in Whitehorse.
Importantly, the new Whitehorse Meals on Wheels will continue to be more than just a meal. Volunteers will continue to be an integral part of the meals service, along with social contact. This decision recognises the importance of regular contact with a friendly face and local community connections, as well as nutritious meals.
Whitehorse City Council Mayor, Cr Mark Lane said, “We are thrilled that the meals provider appointed by the Commonwealth brings the same commitment to social connection and volunteer involvement that Council has facilitated until now. Council is already working in partnership with Whitehorse Meals on Wheels to support a successful implementation and smooth transition for our clients by 30 June 2023. We are proud that Whitehorse is one of the first sites under this model, with a view to demonstrating that different levels of government, service providers and community volunteers can work together for great outcomes for our valued older residents.”
Council is contacting our current Meals on Wheels clients and volunteers to keep them informed and to help them make a smooth transition to the new operator.
In-home Care Service Transition
Council is pleased that new providers for other aged care services have also been announced. This group of providers will provide comprehensive coverage of the services Council has provided until now. It is encouraging that these providers are already providing services in Melbourne’s east. We also appreciate that there are providers who are dedicated to serving clients in a way that reflects their cultural background.
Our clients have been sent letters with more details on the service types each of the providers will be offering and explaining the next steps. The letter also ask clients for their preferences.
The new service providers that have been appointed by the Commonwealth are Link Community Transport Inc., Health Ability formerly Carrington Health, Uniting AgeWell Limited, Fronditha Care, Australian Multicultural Community Services and Access Health & Community.
