BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching UCAS Code: CX6C High quality sports coaching is essential to keep people active, motivated and improve their sporting performance. This course blends practical sports coaching with studies in sports sciences, exercise and health and coaching theory. It is tailored specifically to individuals with a general interest, as well as those actively involved in coaching in sport. You will study a range of relevant disciplines, such as physiology, biomechanics, psychology, coaching theory and coaching practice, as well as broader issues surrounding leadership, rehabilitation and nutrition, to help you hone your skills as a sports coach and support you in your career aspirations. BA (Hons) Sports Development UCAS Code: C620 Key areas of this course include the structure of UK sport, sport policy, the origins of sports development and models of sports development, as well as influences on participation. Given current thinking around the importance of multi-disciplinary approaches to issues such as obesity and sport participation, students will examine sports development in relation to broader health and physical activity strategies and initiatives. Teaching and Assessment Our teaching methods are designed to develop your knowledge, whilst enhancing your employability skills. We aim to achieve this using a variety of teaching methods, including small group work, practical activities, workshops, lectures, tutorials, computerbased learning, presentations and independent learning. Throughout your course there will be on-going assessments to help consolidate your learning. You will also do a series of assessments include essays, reports, practical work and presentations.

Opportunities University Sports Sunderland (USS) The USS organise sport and physical recreation for staff and students both on and off campus. It also runs New Sport New You, a 10-week block each term for beginners. You may also choose to participate in Campus Sport, which is a series of sports leagues for staff and students, which helps to facilitate a wide variety of sports clubs from aikido to water polo. The grounds are also used by off-campus sports clubs for training, and competitions with the University’s many partners are also held at the grounds. Our Elite Athlete Scheme (EAS) is part of the national Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme and can be used to fund training and competition expenses to help individuals realise their sporting potential. Furthermore, our Performance Clinic provides physiotherapy under supervision of an experienced physiotherapist who has supported Team GB athletes at the last three Olympic Games.
Sport Career Academy This is the voluntary course available to all students studying sport. You can develop new professional and personal skills through over 300 top quality placement opportunities. Successful completion of every 50-100 hours of volunteering leads to an opportunity to study, for example, a National Governing Body (NGB) award paid for by USS. The Community Sports Course offers opportunities for students to gain the experience to deliver top quality event management, coaching and teaching in schools, colleges and community groups. This also looks great on your CV and will help to improve your career prospects.

Facilities Exercise Physiology Our Smartspeed timing system is used worldwide by elite sport clubs to assess speed, agility and reaction times. Portable gas and Randox biochemical analysers enable students to assess human performance in and out of the lab. Our FLIR® Thermal Imaging camera is used by students to assess how the body responds to cold and heat stress and helps to optimise athlete recovery. TM
Biomechanics Catapult Minimax is a GPS system used for tracking player movement and activity patterns. Athletes’ movements can be analysed using the Vicon® 3D analysis system to better understand technique, and our new XSensTM MVN suit allows us to take motion capture out of the lab and into the real world. You can also learn how to use 2D Dartfish® software to capture live action images and give instantaneous analysis and feedback to coaches and athletes in sports such as football, netball or skiing.
Sports Medicine and Anatomy Anatomy is taught by experienced staff in a specialist clinical lab. As part of learning about sports injury rehabilitation techniques, you will use sports massage and ultrasound equipment for both injury diagnosis and treatment. Balance, stability and muscle imbalances are examined using our Biodex® whilst the Delsys Wireless EMG enables the assessment of muscle activation.
Fitness and Conditioning Suite Here you will find dedicated fitness and conditioning equipment that would be the envy of most modern gyms. You will be trained to use correct techniques to maximise gains and reduce injury risks. From a wide range of Technogym® cardiovascular equipment, resistance machines and Olympic weights, you will receive hands-on teaching in a fully equipped and professional environment.

Careers There are many careers available to those who graduate from sport, exercise and health courses, including work as a strength and conditioning coach, a technician or a sports coach. Alternatively, you may choose to extend your skills through further educational courses such as physiotherapy or move into working with local authorities or Primary Care Trusts. You will also graduate with a range of transferable skills essential for employability. Our courses now also include Skills Active qualifications at no further cost that facilitate career development in sport, fitness and the outdoors.

Combined Subjects Sport (Major, Dual or Minor) UCAS code: C6 A Combined Subjects degree course provides the opportunity to study Sport alongside another subject, for example, dance or psychology.
By choosing one of our Foundation Degrees, you will study at a further education college and will gain the practical skills that will help you pursue a career in sport. Our twoyear courses have been developed together with sports bodies and employers and lead to careers in sport, exercise and fitness centres, community services, adventure sport and outdoor recreation. Alternatively, you can move onto the final year of one of our sport degrees. The route will depend on the foundation degree you have studied, and this will improve your career opportunities after graduation. These courses are available at Sunderland College, East Durham College, Tyne Met College and Gateshead College.
