The Sycamore (Fig) tree grows from 90’ to 130’ tall, and on average lives for almost 600 years. Flowers appear in spring and develop into fuzzy, round fruiting balls that hang on long stems like Christmas ornaments. They darken and ripen in October. Within each ball are tiny, seed-like fruits that disperse in downy tufts like daffodil fluff, as the

Thursday, December 31, 1931 Calhoun secured his license and with his bride-elect went to McRae where Rev. G. W. McCarty, former pastor of the Baptist Church in this city, solemnized the rites of matrimony. Mr. W. Howard Thompson of the Hickory Plains neighborhood was in town trading since our last. Mr. Thompson is one of the best and most successful live-at-home farmers in the county. He always raises enough for home use and some to sell. He told us he had killed three porkers that dressed 760 pounds and had several more that would be killed later. The most important thing to be done in Arkansas in January 1932 is the election of a U. S. Senator to fill the unexpired term of Senator Caraway, deceased. There has been much said about not holding elections in every precinct over the state and such has been spoken of in Prairie County to defray the costs of judges and clerks. Let us say here - the election should be held in every precinct in the state. Democrats should show their strength and loyal Democrats will do it every time they have a chance. We believe there are enough loyal Democrats who will serve as judges and clerks without pay if it’s necessary. We know one old soldier, a dyed in the wool Democrat, A. S. Reinhardt of this city, who offers his services.

Thursday, December 2, 1942 Gains Dixon (colored) of Hickory Plains, minute man and group leader, is now operating a peanut picker. He has taken a job on one acre that will turn out about 75 to 80 bushels. He is helping a farmer harvest his Food for Victory crop. Dixon says the homemade picker does a fine job. Aaron Burr Curry, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Curry of Des Arc, today completed training at the Medical Replacement Training Center in Camp Barkeley, Tex.,and received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Medical Administrative Corps. He was a former student at Johnson Chapel school. He won the post singles tennis championship at the army and navy general hospital at Hot Springs in 1939. Young college students at home for the holidays are: Charles Lively, James Pay, James Robinson, Misses Mary Jane McCuin, Mary Allie Pay, Gwendolyn Greer, Betty Jane Horne, Ruth and Marilyn Henning and Carolyn Caskey. In response to numerous inquiries, T. C. Parks, Chairman of the Prairie County War Price Rationing Board, announced today that extra gasoline rations will not be issued to allow individuals to make trips during the Christmas holidays. Members of the Armed Forces who are at home on leave will not be issued extra gasoline rations. Representative Joe Foster of Lonoke County said last week he was preparing a bill that would require Arkansas bus lines to add a conductor to each vehicle as a means of enforcing segregation of white and colored passengers. He said bus drivers are not enforcing a law passed by the 1937 legislature giving bus operators authority to designate seats or sections and to eject passengers who do not comply with their orders. Enlistment of 17-year-olds

has been resumed by the United States Marine Corps. Eligible Arkansans in this age group must possess average mentality, obtain their parents’ consent and pass a reasonable physical examination. Upon completion of training, they will join hundreds of other Devil Dogs from their home state who are on duty with the Marine corps throughout the world. Our old friend, S. L. Wesson, merchant, fur buyer, plantation owner and manager, stockraiser, etc., was in town on business since our last and settled his subscription. The regular meeting of the Des Arc Young Business Men’s Club was held last Friday night at the Legion Hut and the main feature was a feast on “wild duck”. Chas. Rister, president, president over the meeting. L. R. Brown offered a resolution of thanks to our young friends, Grover Gilliam and Marvin King of the Palace Drug Store who furnished the ducks. The club members were also treated to a couple of interesting talks by members of the public speaking class at the Des Arc school, Messrs. Logsdon and Horne. Mrs. William Reinhardt, teacher at Johnson Chapel, was in the city shopping Saturday. Tim Clark, one of the best farmers in the bottoms east of Des Arc, was in town trading one day since our last. The Des Arc Glee Club, organized by Prof. John P. Bethell, a member of the Des Arc School faculty, rendered to the public last Thursday night a very entertaining program which was attended by a large and appreciative audience. Our old friend, L. O. Langford and son, Ray, of the Johnson Chapel neighborhood, were in town trading yesterday. We acknowledge a nice lot of sweet potatoes and a gallon of nice sorghum applied on subscription. Thanks.

T h u r s d a y, D e c e m b e r 2 7 , 1 9 8 1 In a brief ceremony here Monday, James E. Lee was the recipient of a plaque presented to him by Mrs. Lovie Roe, in tribute to his years of service as emcee for numerous beauty pageants and programs. Mrs. Roe, chairman of the Prairie County Fair Queen Committee, said, “After 15 years of being one of our most colorful and enjoyed Master of Ceremonies, this plaque is presented in appreciation from the Fair Queen Committee.” Mr. Lee said, “I think it is time for me to take a back seat and let someone else do it. There are lots of people who would do a good job.” At the 1982 installation banquet, the Arkansas Hall of Fame will honor Ambrose (Bro) Erwin of Beebe, a native of Des Arc and one of the state’s most highly respected coaches. It was announced that Coach Erwin, along with five other sports figures, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Erwin, during 23 years of coaching, recruited a number of Des Arc boys, including Fay Hammond and Schuyler Reid to play on his football team at Beebe. Three Prairie County football players have been named

to the Class A All State Football Team. They are Frazier Mosby and Marty Griffith of Hazen and Verna Ray Jones of DeValls Bluff. Chris Chappell was named from Cotton Plant. At the Game and Fish Commission’s meeting in Stuttgart recently, the board voted to rename the Black Swamp WMA in Woodruff County as the Rex Hancock WMA in recognition of the Stuttgart dentist’s efforts on behalf of preserving the Cache River basin’s bountiful wildlife habitat against plans for channelization. His role as one of the leading critics of the project gained him national recognition. Kevin Campbell was the winner of a ATC Honda 3wheeler given away by the local AAM Chapter. The drawing was held at a potluck dinner held here Saturday. Guests included state and national AAMA delegates, Jack Cothran, Deloss McKnight and Odis Chapman. Des Arc senior girls coasted to a 50-28 victory over Clarendon here Friday night. Emma Saxton led the Eagles scoring with 12 points. Betty Griffith was the leading rebounder with 5.

rkansas’ easy 90day divorce law and its effects are apparent as 37 petitioners from 19 states have filed suits since the Supreme Court declared the law effective last June. It is estimated that costs in 43 cases have added approximately $350 to county and state revenues and that Little Rock lawyers have received approximately $1,500 in fees as a direct result of the “easy” divorce law. Under the new law, a person must have been a resident of Arkansas for two months before the commencement of the divorce action. Causes of divorce in Arkansas are practically the same as in other states. They include: Desertion for one year, felony, habitual drunkenness for one year, former marriage existing, and physical incapacity. Eight states require two years residence before divorce action is allowed. Democratic congressional leaders tackled anew today the problem of slashing the federal budget by $300,000,000 with word from President Hoover that he would welcome reductions. A cut in salaries of government workers, up and down the line and including members of Congress is one of the propositions under consideration. Quite a surprise to their many friends when it was learned that Mr. Henry Calhoun and Miss Della Hart were married. On Saturday evening, December 26, Mr.

With kids getting out for the Christmas holiday I was thinking about how often kids have short days at the end of semesters. Just this week my kiddos go out three early three different days. With all the change in schedules it’s easy for us parent’s to miss the memo or the phone call. I still remember last year when Rachel and Will had one of those early dismissals and I either forgot or didn’t know about it. It was not a happy feeling when I got the call from Jennifer that she had gotten a call from the school and Rachel and Will were waiting to be picked up. I felt very bad and I know that Rachel and Will were a little nervous about it. It’s no fun to be forgotten. When we have those experiences especially on going or traumatic experiences of being forgotten or let down by people who are supposed to care about us it can cause us to pull away from others. We want to guard or emotions and we put up barriers sometimes without realizing to other people. We automatically enter into a relationship with someone else less open than we were before. Sometimes it’s us that disappoint or forget others which also can make us guarded because we don’t want to hurt anyone that we care about. This guardedness can even affect our relationship with God. As I read our Scripture this morning I began to

wonderer about all the ways that Mary must have been disappointed by people she cared about. I imagine because of the stigma of a birth before marriage she must have been ostracized from her community. They were probably beyond skeptical about how she came to be pregnant. The friends that she had had her life probably stopped talking to her. And women who watched her grow up began to gossip behind her back. What must her parents’ have thought? She was always such a good daughter how did this happen? What did we do wrong? It was probably a welcome relief to go and visit her cousin Elizabeth. Joseph also was in danger of letting Mary down. When he found out that Mary was pregnant, he was honorable in that he didn’t want to expose her to more public disgrace but he still was making plans to quietly break the betrothal. Then God entered into Joseph’s dream. Specifically an angel told Joseph not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife and also that they should name the baby Jesus. It was then that Joseph made the decision to accept and raise Jesus as his own. We see this pattern of faithfulness and unfaithfulness replay itself throughout the Bible. The Old Testament was the ongoing pattern of God calling his people, them responding, and then the people falling away. It

happened over and over again. God’s faithfulness to his people versus the people’s unfaithfulness results in him sending prophet after prophet call them back. The New Testament begins with God doing something completely new. Instead of prophets he is sending the Son. Jesus came so that we might be reconciled to God. He trusted Mary and Joseph to be the parents of this most precious child. Jesus trusted his disciples to carry on the work of spreading the good news. Even though they weren’t perfect, God still put his faith in them. God will be faithful to us not matter what. Jesus promised that not matter he would be with us. He also promised that we would be with him. God keeps his promises. God is faithful even when other humans are not or cannot be. I don’t ever want to disappoint or fail Jennifer or the kids but I will I am human. I make dumb decisions sometimes. Thankfully we serve a God who is bigger than our brokenness. I want to invite us to remember the promise found in Isaiah 41:10, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. May God bless you and yours this Christmas.” Brother Dee

The Des Arc Nursing and Rehabilitation Center would like to wish everyone in the Community a very Merry Christmas! We hope you have a joyous and blessed holiday and remember “Jesus is the Reason for the Season!” We have enjoyed shopping at the DANRC General Store for that special something for our loved ones. We also had a VIP come by for a visit. Can you guess who he is? SANTA CLAUS of course! He stopped by to check to see if the residents and staff were naughty or nice and to get that special Christmas Wish list. Everyone had a great time along

with the good food. We will be celebrating again next week with New Year’s approaching. We will enjoy watching the parades and just maybe some of us will be able to stay up to see the mirrored ball drop at midnight. We can’t believe it is already almost January, Better get those 2016. blackeyed peas and hog jowl ready! Also, we will celebrate our December birthdays with cake and all the trimmings. Come out and wish our birthday honorees a “Happy Birthday”. Looks like the weather is going to be spring-like this week as temperatures climb.

Storms are predicted for the area. Please be safe. Our light show will continue to New Years. If you have not seen the display, come out and check it out. We are honored to receive the Chamber of Commerce Business Decoration award.. Thank you to everyone who voted for us. That is all for this week. Please come by for a visit. Volunteers are always welcome! From our home to yours, have a blessed Christmas. Teresa Henley Activity Director

Well, Merry Christmas again and again. This bunch of folks who now want it to be Happy Holidays, ugh on them. If they want to do Happy Holidays on another day ,I won’t go about them saying Merry Christmas, so I want them to bug off! Now on with what little stuff I know about or on people: Son Stan from Conway came Monday to get rid of some more of these Oak leaves. He and his brother ,Steve, moved tons at their visit during Veteran’s Day week, but those two trees really had the leaves this year. I cooked him some Pinto beans, with some ham, fried potatoes and cornbread, washed down with sweet iced tea. How good can life be? Ted Holder of Virginia visited a few days last week here with his brother, Mickey Holder, and other family members. Folks, I believe some kind of FORCE came thru Gregory on Tuesday of last week. My cell phone battery went blank and I had not used it hardly any. I had to take a friend to Searcy for Chemo on Wednesday morning and I ran to Walmart’s while she was busy and saw my neighbor, Robert Doss, there because his phone

burned up that same night AND my land line phone quit ringing. I called and reported as Sherry had emailed me that my answering machine did not work- somehow I found that it was the phone not ringing in. Then I found the Holders was doing the same as mine. When Jamie called me that he was on the way on Thursday I told him about the Holders. Well, it was in the little telephone building on road

752 and it got fixed. Makes me wonder!!! What? I have a BUM knee and have been using a cane because it wants to fold up on me. I told you that because if you see me with the cane, don’t think it is because I am old, just my knee that is old! Clean your glasses before my after Christmas news hits your mailbox!! I should have tons of news. Goodnight. Rosetta

Journal’s apologies to Griffithville subscribers ! *12/17 Journals were delivered by WRJ staff to Griffithville PO on Sat. 12/19 (instead of Friday) by 9:30 am (the PO was notified at 9:00 am that the papers were on their way). In the past, this timing has worked well - thus both boxes & routes were expected to receive their papers 12/19. Even though the carrier and WRJ passed each other just blocks from the post office, an apparent decision had been made by PO to delay the routes until Mon., 12/21. Because of this coordination difficulty, plus the improved service by the USPS; future Journals will no longer be delivered directly to the post office - but will instead be mailed thru the NLR Mail Terminal for USPS delivery.

The USPS Mail Terminal in North Little Rock achieved 95%+ “next-day delivery” for 4 consecutive issues in November: 11/5, 11/12, 11/19, 11/26 - and again for last week’s 12/17 issue (exceptions shown in Red). USPS officials at NLR committed to improving delivery service with following two November 18 emails to the Journal: 1. “We are planning on making this (next-day-delivery) a trend”. 2. “No misinterpretation. We are utilizing your (Journal’s) emails and positive comments to build synergy around our flat clerks and not only improve your service but provide the service that everyone deserves”. Tracking chart at left no longer shows the 8 weeks of “LATE” deliveries which occurred between 9/10 and 10/29. (For clarity, later than “next-day” deliveries are indicated in RED color online - red may appear as light gray in print version)

NOTE: To circumvent late postal delivery . . . Get the Journal “ONLINE” (it’s FREE with your paid subscription) and read the Journal early on same day mailed !

Why is Christmas Day on December 25? Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the Son of God. The name 'Christmas' comes from the Mass of Christ (or Jesus). A Mass service (which is sometimes called Communion or Eucharist) is where Christians remember that Jesus died for us and then came back to life. The 'Christ-Mass' service was the only one that was allowed to take place after sunset (and before sunrise the next day), so people had it at Midnight!

One more Christmas . . . By Glenn Mollette

W

hen I was a child I remember my grandfather suffering chest pains. He kept putting nitroglycerin tablets under his tongue to help with the pain. My mother and I along with grandma and a couple of others sat with grandpa in the family dining room area. After his heart pain subsided he sighed, "I'll probably never live to see another Christmas." Looking back I remember that he did have one more Christmas. After grandpa and mamaw died Christmases were never quiet the same. During those special times together we thought they would never pass. It seemed that life and Christmas were frozen in time. To a child Christmas had always been this way and I could never imagine Christmas being any different. We can never comprehend tomorrow. We hope and wish for tomorrow but we don't fully understand all the changes that tomorrow will bring. We hope for good jobs, paid off mortgages, graduation from school, retirement security and on and on. However as one Christmas after another rolls by so do the years and so does life's scenery and the people around us. Some people this year will spend their first Christmas in a nursing home. Some this year will spend their first Christmas without a parent or a spouse. Some will try to get through this season without them. Others will try to make it through the season unemployed or with a recent terminal health diagnosis. My wife and I were talking tonight but

Bring Home the Feeling of Christmas

how better it would be if her father and my parents and others that we loved were still alive. Christmas without them is different. I don't know what you are going through today. Our nation is dealing with a lot. We have terrorism, financial struggles, and people experiencing lots of stress. Many American families are hoping to just survive the Christmas season and make it to January 1. Hopefully you and I will have one more Christmas. If we do let's savor each moment. Whatever and whoever you have in your life please take the time to embrace them and love them. Next year could be very different. Take the time to personally enjoy Christmas. I realize Christmas is about giving. We want to see our loved ones smile. However, in the days ahead recharge your battery a little. Read some Christmas stories. Watch some Christmas movies. Reflect on the message of peace and love delivered to the world in the baby Jesus through a peasant couple in Bethlehem. Visit some people in the nursing home, the jail, or those who are aged and lonely. Also connect with some people through visits or just the telephone and say Merry Christmas. It will do them and you a lot of good. May you have many more Christmases, but at least one more, and may it be one of your best ever. Glenn Mollette is an American Syndicated Columnist and Author. So we get the name Christ-Mass, shortened to Christmas. Christmas is now celebrated by people around the world, whether they are Christians or not. It's a time when family and friends come together and remember the good things they have. People, and especially children, also like Christmas as it's a time when you give and receive presents!

May the spirit of Christmas fill your heart and home with peace, joy and contentment. Our thanks and best wishes for a happy holiday reside with you, our customers and friends. Merry Christmas!

Holiday cookies are a delight, when prepared right By Benjamin Waldrum

U of A System Division of Agriculture Baking cookies is a time-honored holiday tradition, but it can be difficult to get that recipe just right. For cookies that family, friends and neighbors will ask for every year, take some tips from the pros, said Carla Hadley, Miller County Extension agent with the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “Many families have a tradition of baking cookies at this time of year,” she said. “My children and I have carried on this tradition since they were old enough to stand up in a chair. I used to get frustrated when my cookies didn’t turn out right, until I figured out some tricks the pros use.” For example: skimping on some recipes can work, but not when it comes to baking. “Quality ingredients are important,” said Hadley. “You can’t produce quality cookies if you’re not using top-quality ingredients. Don’t skimp and use a low-fat spread in place of butter or margarine in baking recipes, as this will produce a very soft cookie dough.” Other tips come in handy in certain sit-

uations. Here are some of Hadley’s best tips:

When rolling out cookies: It can be frustrating when the dough sticks to the rolling pin. This is easily solved by lightly dusting the rolling pin and rolling surface with flour to prevent sticking. This may need to be repeated. When the dough is too soft: Refrigerate for one hour. If cookies spread and become flat after baking: Try refrigerating the dough until well-chilled, about 1-2 hours. If the dough is too soft, stir in 1-2 tablespoons of flour. Greasing the cookie sheet: Never do this unless the recipe asks for it. Greasing a cookie sheet when the recipe does not call for it can cause the cookies to spread too much and brown too quickly. Most cookies have enough fat to prevent sticking. To get evenly browned cookies: Use a baking stone or a shiny, aluminum cookie sheet at least two inches narrower and shorter than the oven. The sheet may be open on one, two, or three sides. When using a darker-colored cookie sheet, watch it carefully – these may cause the cookies to brown more quickly.

To ensure a perfect bake: For best results, place one cookie sheet in the oven at a time in the middle of the center rack. Baking on the bottom rack can burn the cookies or cause them to bake unevenly. Leave about two inches of space around the cookie sheet to allow for good air circulation. Once the cookies are baked and cooled, they can be frozen for later use. Both frosted and unfrosted cookies can keep for up to two months in the freezer. “It’s best to freeze them unfrosted, as sometimes frosted cookies become moist under the frosting,” said Hadley. When preparing cookies for freezing, arrange them in a container lined with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. For best results, wrap each cookie individually in plastic wrap and separate them with layers of aluminum foil. Store in airtight containers, labeled and dated. Allow frozen cookies to thaw, loosely covered, on a serving plate for 20 minutes before frosting or serving. “The trick is being able to resist waiting that long before eating them,” she said.

Make It Merry! Rejoice… It’s Christmas!

Merry Christmas

A

Christmas song is a complex organism. At their best, our classic yuletide anthems always seem to find that impossible balance between timelessness and nostalgia -- tapping into a sort of greater, collective memory of a warm and fuzzy feeling. On the unfortunate flip side, though, Christmas has also inspired more silly, grating, novelty songs than the other 364 days of the year combined. And so we're left with the annual wintertime conundrum -- can we continue listening to and loving a genre of music that consists largely of bubblegum, Biebers and "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer"? The answer, of course, always seems to be yes. And it's not just because you've forgiven Paul McCartney for "Wonderful Christmas Time." The truth is, no matter how many hokey Christmas songs send you racing for the shopping mall exits, there will always be those pristine, unmistakable, permanently enjoyable classics that keep you coming back and feeling the spirit all gendary Bing Crosby-David Bowie duet that sits in the pantheon of eternally listenable Christmas tunes. 19. Christmas Time is Here Originally written and performed by the Vince Guaraldi Trio for 1965's A Charlie Brown Christmas, this melancholy melody falls on the listener like a light snow -- a lovely, welcome distraction. 18. What Christmas Means to Me There are plenty of great Motown Christmas classics that have been radio staples for decades, but it's hard to top this bouncy 1967 Stevie Wonder track. That's probably why it's been covered by everyone from Hanson to Cee Lo Green. 17. O Come, O Come, Emmanuel Talk about staying power! The original Latin roots of this beautiful Christmas hymn may date as far back as the 8th century. The widely known English version was cotranslated in the 1850s by the Anglican priest John Mason Neale -- equally famous for penning his own original carol, "Good King Wenceslas." 16. Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight Tonight) At a mere two minutes and six seconds, this energetic 1989 single by punk icons the Ramones is a welcome antidote to those seemingly never-ending, "12 Days of Christmas" types of holiday songs.

15. Please Come Home For Christmas It's hard to turn the dial when a broken-hearted man is pleading his holiday heart out. First recorded by R&B singer Charles Brown in 1960, a cover by the Eagles climbed the charts almost 20 years later. 14. Carol of the Bells It might be the most difficult Christmas song to sing along with, but that doesn't stop millions from trying, even if they're alone in their car and hopelessly lacking in harmonizers. 13. 2,000 Miles A hit for the Pretenders in 1983, this dreamy ballad was written as an ode to the band's late guitarist James Honeyman-Scott, but its lasting appeal seems to be for listeners spending the holidays far away from someone they care about. 12. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy No Christmas is complete without sold-out performances of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, and no portion of that ballet captures that magical innocence of the season quite like this one -- immortalized in roughly 8,000 TV commercials, and yet still easy on the ears! 11. Santa Claus Go Straight to the Ghetto Christmas music could use a little more funk, and James Brown was kind enough to provide it. When the Godfather of Soul addresses St. Nick directly, we all win. 10. You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch Stink! Stank! Stunk! One of the funniest and most-imitated songs of the season, the original version featured the voice of the great Thurl Ravenscroft -- the same man who made Tony the Tiger say, "They're Grrrrrreat!" 9. It Came Upon a Midnight Clear "Peace on the earth, goodwill to men" is not a sentiment that's likely to outlast its welcome, no matter how many people you had to elbow your way around to get your kid the new Elmo doll. 8. Christmas Wrapping It might stand in stark contrast to the majestic tone of some other entries on this list, but this playful 1981 single by the Waitresses -- a little-known New Wave band from Akron, Ohio -- has stood the test of time largely thanks to singer Patty Donahue's relatable, down-to-earth telling of a girl looking for a holiday love. 7. We Three Kings Just another in a long line of "holiday hits" written by clergymen in the mid 19th century. Hundreds of beautiful

renditions have been recorded over the years, but just try to listen to the Beach Boys' 1964 version without getting goosebumps. 6. Santa Claus is Coming to Town Sure, at its core it's a silly kids song. But whether it's the boundless enthusiasm of a pint-sized Michael Jackson & the Jackson 5 or a jean-jacket-era Bruce Springsteen having fun with the E Street Band, this one never gets old. 5. I'll Be Home for Christmas While the original Bing Crosby recording captures the heartbreaking daydreams of a GI in World War II, this song remains the gold standard for the experience of Christmas in any wartime, whether it's a soldier in 1940s Germany or 2013 Afghanistan. 4. Fairytale of New York One of the most beloved and oft-recorded Christmas songs of the past 30 years, "Fairytale of New York" keeps its charm after 100 listens, thanks to the unbridled folk energy and unorthodox, rough-and-tumble characters created by the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl. 3. O Holy Night When it comes to the non-secular brand of Christmas standards, it seems like just about everyone is united in their undying admiration for "O Holy Night" -- a legitimately moving epic adapted from a French poem in 1855. 2. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas From the moment Judy Garland first warbled it in 1944's Meet Me in St. Louis, we were hooked. No other Christmas song combines joyous lyrics and a somber, wistful tone in quite the way this one does. 1. White Christmas But of course, if you're going to name the one Christmas song that nobody ever has gotten sick of, it might as well be the number one selling song of all-time. And yes, that's "#1 selling song, " not "#1 selling Christmas song." Written by Irving Berlin, "White Christmas" has been covered by everyone from Bob Marley to Bette Midler, and Kenny Rogers to Taylor Swift. While it is hard to live up to the inimitable Bing Crosby, this harmonious rendition by the famous Australian Motown cover band Human Nature does justice to Bing, capturing the aching and beautiful sentiment of the song -- and in doing so fully realizes the combination of joy and memory that makes Christmas what it is.

Happy Holidays With warm wishes and thanks to our neighbors and friends this season.

There are a few popular myths that claim candy canes are a Christian candy, but this is not the case. One myth says there was an Indiana candy-maker who invented the candy cane in the shape of a "J" for Jesus (alternately a shepherd staff) and colored it white for the purity of Jesus' virgin birth and red for the blood shed on the cross. This story seems to be false, because candy canes appeared during the 17th century, which also debunks claims that the candies were used as secret identifiers for early persecuted Christians. The closest possible religious connection that Snopes could find in unpacking this myth was a legend from 1670, alleging that the Christian Church appropriated an already popular Christmas candy -originally in stick form -and reshaped it as a shepherd staff to give to children at mass to keep them quiet.

‘TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS In 1822, Clement Clarke Moore, an Episcopal minister, wrote a long Christmas poem for his three daughters entitled “An Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas.” Moore’s poem, which he was initially hesitant to publish due to the frivolous nature of its subject, is largely responsible for our modern image of Santa Claus as a “right jolly old elf” with a portly figure and the supernatural ability to ascend a chimney with a mere nod of his head! Although some of Moore’s imagery was probably borrowed from other sources, his poem helped popularize the now-familiar image of a Santa Claus who flew from house to house on Christmas Eve–in “a miniature sleigh” led by eight flying reindeer–leaving presents for deserving children. “An Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas” created a new and immediately popular American icon. In 1881, political cartoonist Thomas Nast drew on Moore’s poem to create the first likeness that matches our modern image of Santa Claus. His cartoon, which appeared in Harper’s Weekly, depicted Santa as a rotund, cheerful man with a full, white beard, holding a sack laden with toys for lucky children. It is Nast who gave Santa his bright red suit trimmed with white fur, North Pole workshop, elves, and his wife, Mrs. Claus.

Merry Christmas

Christmas Legends . . . . The legends of Christmas are more than just amusing and entertaining; they either convey a strong message or teach us an important lesson of life. Both ways, they tell us about certain simple yet significant values of life. Children especially, are immensely benefitted through these tales. The fun and entertaining parts are capable of grabbing the attention of the children, thereby conferring upon them the ethics or morals which these legends hold. Almost every Christmas tradition has a legend behind it. In fact, it will not be wrong to say that most of the legends have become traditions. Christmas tree, for instance, is often associated with the legend of thunder oak. The story narrates how the evergreen fir tree replaced the thunder oak (Thor's Tree) and was chosen as Christmas tree. The legend of Santa Claus is perhaps the most popular of all the legends. Every child awaits the arrival of Santa on Christmas, with much eagerness. In some places, children hang their stockings and in others, gifts are inconspicuously placed beneath the Christmas tree. Santa Claus's origin has often been associated with Saint Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra in the 4th century. With so many traditions related with Christmas, there is bound

to be a large number of legends as well. To observe all the traditions religiously is

important, but more important is to understand the principles on which

they are constructed, which is their very purpose.
