We are all in this together

T

his year has been a challenging year for all of us, and I thought I should do something a bit different for my Christmas message.

As front-line workers in the service industry, we realtors have seen first-hand how the pandemic, world politics and economic struggles have affected our society and our little community of South Surrey/White Rock. I can tell you that we are all struggling – either financially, mentally or both – but are doing our best to adjust and stay strong. We, as realtors, were deemed an essential service (like it or not) and as such, have had to continue to do our best to ‘make-do’ in these uncertain times. Well, I can tell you, it definitely has not been “Business as Usual”. We have had to adapt, as everyone did, to a new way of doing business, and to do our best to market and show our clients properties in the safest manner possible. We were told we could do Open Houses – but that we might then be held liable if someone contracted COVID-19 on our watch – so we adjusted to doing ‘virtual’ open houses. We were told that we also may be held liable doing in-person showings, so along came COVID-19 waiver form to be filled out prior to showings, to ensure that everyone viewing the properties are not infected. During showings, we provide gloves and masks and make sure that our listing properties are sanitized – both before and after the showing – adding at least another 30 minutes to each showing (in most cases). I had one listing recently that the showings were limited to one person at a time. I had 4 showings in a row that day, each with two people plus their realtor, so I ended up with twelve walk-through tours over the course of the 4 showings. Definitely not business as usual! Once we have an accepted offer, we have to get the appraisers and inspectors through – in order to assist the Buyers in their due diligence period. The appraisers have also shifted the way they do their business and now rely on the realtor’s listing information, pictures, floor plans and videos in order to put together their reports. Again we end up taking on more costs and much more liability – but we march forward and continue to adjust to the change. Dealing with inspections is another challenge altogether. One recent instance is where the sellers were elderly and were highly concerned about contracting COVID-19. I had a long conversation with the inspector to make sure he was going to follow our COVID-19 policy of wearing brand new gloves and a mask for the inspection, and to make sure he would help the home-owners to feel comfortable during the process. This was again a lot of effort to make sure everyone was on the same page and felt safe during the whole process. These are just a few key adjustments we realtors have made (as an industry) but I can tell you that there have certainly been many more. I’m writing this message to share that I am proud to be in an industry with such a great group of individuals that truly are professionals. I’m also sharing this message to let everyone out there knowthat: You are not alone in your concerns and struggles. We are all in this together. I went to school at Crescent Park elementary, where my daughter also attended, and the father of her teacher actually remembered me! That is how small and great this community is! I spent my high school years in the Okanagan, but moved back “Home” within 10 days of graduating. South Surrey/White Rock has been my home ever since and I wouldn’t dream of changing it. I have a diverse background in retail sales, construction work, restaurant management, customer service, sales/marketing and management, and yes, of course Real Estate. I have volunteered my spare time and sat on several boards locally, in order to do my part to ‘give back’. I don’t believe that we should just take – but instead give back and all do our part to make our community the very best it can be. I would like to send all of you a heartfelt thank you for participating in making our community, in my opinion, the best place to live in BC. INGREDIENTS: • 10 Potatoes or 5 lbs. • ¼ cup Butter - Cubed • 1 block of Cream Cheese - Cubed • ½ cup chopped fresh Parsley or some parsley flakes

• 1 cup Sour Cream • Pinch of Salt and/or Pepper • ½ cup to 1 Cup of Shredded Parmesan Cheese (based on preference)

DIRECTIONS

• Peel potatoes; boil in large pot until tender; drain, mash. • Mix in cream cheese and butter with a potato masher until melted. • Mix in sour cream, salt/pepper, and parmesan cheese. • Transfer to casserole dish, cover and refrigerate until you’re ready to bake. • When ready, bake in the oven at 400º F for 20 minutes until cooked through and the top has lightly browned. • If doubling this recipe, bake for 30-35 minutes.

After 7 years and raising over 1.4 million dollars for Breast Cancer Research we took a 2 year hiatus to regroup and come up with something new for our Community. In 2015 we presented the Holiday Home Tour for Hope. With the generosity of our homeowners from Crescent Beach through South Surrey to White Rock, who have opened up their homes for you to tour we are now in our 6th year. COVID-19 was an unexpected turn for everyone and we just couldn’t bare the thought of not doing something for our community and our charities in a year when our spirits need it the most. So this year we are bringing the tour home in the form of the Holiday Home Tour Magazine. Our homeowners, sponsors, designers and volunteers have helped us raise $365,000 in our first 5 years and we are grateful to all of them. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the magazine will be splitting between the Peace Arch Hospice Society and Surrey Hospital Foundation with funds directed to the Breast Health Clinic at Jim Pattison outpatient care in the fight against Breast Cancer and the Children’s Health Clinic.
