WHY DO I CHOOSE BOTSWANA? Botswana is considered by many to deliver the overall best quality safari. It’s pristine wilderness, unparalleled game viewing, luxury camps in their private concessions, and wonderful people are just some of its many outstanding attributes. It’s one of the first African nations to truly grasp the link between conservation and economic success. The country is a leader in protecting its natural habitats and practicing sustainable tourism in its game reserves and national parks. Approximately 40% of Botswana is devoted to National Parks.

Wilderness Safaris, our hosts in Africa, say, “we create journeys, not holidays. A journey is an immersive experience, one that changes how you view the world in general and the wild places of Africa in particular. Our Journeys Change Lives.”
MAR 10: Fly to Livingstone, Zambia, experience Victoria Falls – Toka Leya Camp, Mar 10-12 MAR 12: Fly to DumaTau, Botswana 3 nights Duma Tau, Mar 12-15
We visit three distinct areas in Botswana, with 3 different habitats. There’s the beautiful Okavango Delta, an inland waterway with no where to go. The water just absorbs into the sands of the Kalahari, while bringing astounding life to this desert area. There’s the Moremi Game Reserve, widely regarded as the predator capital of the world. And, the Linyanti area, rich in migrating elephant. In Botswana, you can hear lions moan and roar around your tent at night; see the clouds of butterflies in the Kalahari Plains; watch a leopard in its branch above your head, surveying its area; see the baby elephants being closely guarded by the rest of the herd. It’s not a park, it’s a wilderness that happens to have luxurious, comfortable camps; wonderful, friendly people eager to share their country; an outstanding array of wildlife and the opportunity to enjoy them closely, with few others nearby. We will learn to look out for the impala, the kudu, the springbok; find the leopard, lion and wild dogs; marvel at the huge herds of elephants, from small to matriarch; see the spectacular array of birdlife; enjoy the sky, where stars are brighter and more extravagant than anywhere at home.

PREMIER CAMP, 3 NIGHTS, OKAVANGO DELTA
MAR 15: Fly to Chitabe; 3 nights Chitabe, Mar 15-18 Mar 18: Fly to Vumbura Plains; 3 nights Vumbura Plains Mar 18-21 The highlight of this camp is our visit to Victoria Falls. We will walk in the drenching spray from the falls, go out for game drives, see hippos in the Zambezi from our boat, and also have the opportunity to walk to see the Rhinos.
This intimate luxury camp built on raised boardwalks overlooks the hippofilled waterways of Linyanti. DumaTau is located close to the source of the Savute Channel, with access to the Linyanti Swamps, floodplains and mopane woodlands, thus offering an excellent combination of habitats. Well known for its elephant concentrations, the area is also renowned for its wildlife including red lechwe, zebra, giraffe, buffalo and warthog. Predator sightings of lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and spotted hyaena are good.
Chitabe is located in the Chitabe Concession, bordering the famous Moremi Game Reserve, in the Okavango Delta wilderness. This unique area harbours a massive variety of habitats within close proximity giving rise to a surprising diversity of species. The mix of Okavango and Kalahari makes for an excellent home to an abundant array of herbivores: giraffe, buffalo, red lechwe, tsessebe, impala and elephant, which in turn support the larger predators: lion, leopard, spotted hyaena, cheetah and wild dog.
The annually flooded grasslands of the Okavango Delta surrounding Vumbura Plains are locally referred to as 'melapo' and offer good seasonal viewing of elephant, giraffe, impala, sable antelope, kudu, zebra, common waterbuck and reedbuck, tsessebe, wildebeest, red lechwe and Cape buffalo. Hippo and crocodile are common in the waterways. Predators include the African wild dog, several resident prides of lion, as well as leopard, cheetah and African wildcat. Birding is exceptional all year round.
MAR 21: Fly to Maun; connect to Johannesburg and home
It’s cliché, but true: a trip into the wilderness will be life changing – Botswana’s wilderness touches your heart and soul. Please join me next March, I’d love to share this with you!
