Hosted by Sydney based photographer Onur Karaozbek and launched over a year ago, Gallery Burlesque has become a
regular event that showcases creative talents and performance.
After spending most of his childhood growing up in Istanbul, Turkey, Onur relocated to Sydney in 1999. Like most of emerging artists, Onur found it hard to afford the expensive rent and expenses to hold his own shows. Joint group shows had become the only alternative to showcase his works regularly. He started to question whether artists should be paying huge amount of money just to exhibit their art. Years later Onur successfully hosted the first show of Gallery Burlesque, a monthly art & performance night for all kinds of artists to showcase their works for free. After changing a few different venues, Onur fortunately found a site for Gallery Burlesque – “Tone”, a brand new performance venue in Sydney central. >> Interview / Gallery Burlesque

Although Onur thinks Sydney is a great city he believes that the city is ‘missing a lot of depth and variety’ stating “there should be more things like underground art and music going on in the city and we need more mid week events and venues that are alive rather than dead doing raffles.” And one of the contributing factors to this Onur believes is that the lack of “real” government support. In the past Onur has made several applications for funding from the Arts Council but none have yet to be approved with no feedback. Although this has not stopped him from running Gallery Burlesque, however, achieving funding has become one of his biggest goals for the future.

When asked how he met the owner of Tone, Onur jested; “I am good at stalking people”. He added, “I like to spend time and get to know the person before making any business decisions. It’s not about what I want but what the person wants. At the end of the day we are using someone else’s property and it is important to know what the owner is comfortable with and see if I can match it…” Fortunate enough, he found his best “stalk-ee” and got a home for Gallery Burlesque.
