Born near Inverness, Charlie Baird studied at the Instituto Allende, Mexico,Wimbledon School of Art and the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris. He relies on a variety of sources culled from the distillation and distortion of memory to convey a place or a specific time. For example, from childhood or from places he has visited and travelled to and Dorset where he now lives.
Accidents and tangents occur while painting. These often result in a mixing of figurative and more abstracted images to convey a mood, using colour, tone and form.

“As a runner and a dog owner I spend time outside in all weathers, in alI seasons, and like to feel as though I am in the landscape, rather than observing it. I seek out open spaces with distant views and depth of light.
“Out in the field I document my journey through quick sketches using black ‘Quink’ ink mixed with water and by photographing to capture the detail. Back in my studio I apply layers of slow-drying acrylic paint with boatbuilders’ epoxy resin, to create an ethereal and translucent quality to the paintings. I try to capture the moments just before rainfall, the settling of mist over rolling hills and the changing light throughout the day.– Anna Boss

“This body of work was completed in situ high up on my local North Devon cliffs, just as spring arrived. It brought with it lovely frothy blackthorn garlanding the cliff edges and the bliss of brighter, lengthening days. A bit tempered by some wicked easterlies, but if I huddled in the right spot it was warm enough to cast off a few wintry layers. All of this accompanied by joyous birdsong and the odd, amusing comment of a passing hiker.” – Mark Rochester
