WELCOME TO

SEDONA “Where an NBA baller meet the crystal ballers.”

It’s also known – less so – as the New Age Mecca of the world, with dozens of spiritual retreats and wellness centers, run by gurus and naturopaths, that attract seekers and followers of an assortment of spiritual pathways. Just when you thought the New Age movement might be slowing down, Sedona is pumping its spirits right back up. “The path to enlightenment and adventure leads through Sedona. What route will you take?”

The show SEDONA is a dark comedy mystery series. At the center is an NBA All-Star who gets wrangled into a cult murder conspiracy in the New Age mountain town of Sedona, AZ. It’s HBO’s Ballers meets Twin Peaks. It’s SEDONA. Sedona - a place best known for it’s stunning red rock formations, kitschy Southwestern gift shops, and population of artsy, affluent retirees.

From the famous energy vortexes to mystic Native American tour guides to regular UFO sightings,

Sedona has fully commercialized New Age meta-

physics and spiritual tourism. Let’s not forget, the world renowned luxury spas with New Age treatments that are not afraid to rub you down with

prickly pear butter, dip you in a wine bath, or try a little Horse Reiki. A haven for the ultra wealthy.

Sedona may seem like a heavenly place but

it isn’t devoid of trouble. Despite a number

of cult-related scandals that have checkered its recent history, the town has sustained its

pristine reputation. Unearthing the shadowy underbelly of Sedona could reveal a cultish and dark world.

From celebrities and gurus, to tourists and broken souls, Sedona is a show about those seeking healing and meaning from all walks of life.

Logline: In the New Age mountain community of Sedona, an aging NBA Superstar, who’s visiting to rejuvenate his body and mind after a bad season-ending injury, witnesses a cult-related homicide leading him to band together with local hippy oddballs to solve the mystery.

This story explores the absurd and farcical

celebrity sports culture, while also diving into the dangers and exploitations of spiritual

gurus and self-help leaders. When these worlds collide, egos and characters go wild. It’s a

show about self-help and self-worth. This is

a seriocomic neo-noir following a NBA star

through dreamy Sedona on a quest to uncover the truth about his missing fan and his own true life purpose. It’s FX’s Atlanta meets

HBO’s Big Little Lies meets Netflix’s Wild Wild Country.

THE STORY AND PILOT NBA star LeDaniel Jenkins is floating around Sedona training and rehabbing his knee injury. He’s pursuing both traditional and radical new age therapy while waiting for a call from any NBA team to offer him a hot new contract. Teams seem to be distancing themselves from him as he grows older and injury prone. LeDaniel is in an existential crisis as he gets injured again while training in Sedona with some other young NBA players. The incident gets blasted on Twitter with the Orlando Magic canceling a meeting with him the next day. In the midst of his crisis, LeDaniel begins to have increasingly strange interactions and visions throughout Sedona.

into a local spiritual crystal shop where LeDaniel gets a psychic crystal reading from the owner, Carol. She reads into his physical struggles and inner doubts, and sees both death and love in his future. LeDaniel gets spooked but he’s also instantly in-

In a state of depression, LeDaniel witnesses what

LeDaniel is quickly disregarded by the local sheriff as a celebrity loony and accused of filing a false claim, after no evidence is found of the homicide. In a moment of clarity, LeDaniel feels a responsibility to take matters into his own hands to figure out what happened to Troy. He reconnects with the his newly found love interest, Carol, who is also distrought over a friend she has lost contact with. They assemble a cast of Sedona locals to form an investigative team, attempting to

The only things he cares about is his basketball legacy, making that money, and his fans. Find-

ing out that he isn’t drawing the interest of any teams as a new free agent, he doesn’t know if

he’ll ever truly bounce back from these injuries

both mentally and physically. LeDaniel believes playing basketball is his only true purpose and dreads the thought of life after b-ball.

Star in the twilight of his professional career, heads to Sedona on an offseason luxury

spa treatment getaway to recover from his

season ending knee injury and bruised ego.

Saddled with free agency rejections, divorce

litigations, and an increasing sense of irrele-

vance, LeDaniel finds himself on the brink of an emotional collapse amidst the beautiful Sedona wilderness.

In the last few years of his career, he’s lost the

status of being a major face of the NBA. He has drifted out of the spotlight which hasn’t helped

his mammoth Michael Jordan ego or self-esteem. The shoe deals, endorsements and clout have

been fading for LeDaniel and his mind feels it. He is battling his big ego with what the public perceives of his value and it’s taking him to a

boiling point. He’s getting an inner voice that’s telling him his physical athleticism is all he’s worth and it might be gone.

Pocus, and Avatar. Carol moved to Sedona 10 years ago to open up her dreamy crystal shop and has been in the heart of the New

Age community ever since. Even though she’s

followed through on her career goals, she still feels a sense of loneliness. She is disillusioned

with her practice and the community at large. Carol is sweet and beautiful but can have a

bit of an edge, just like a sharp crystal. With

a strong intuition, she can sense the subtlest

of feelings. As we start the story, she is deeply troubled by the feeling of losing touch with

close friend Lizzy. She also sparks an instant intimate connection with LeDaniel. Oppo-

sites definitely attract but when it comes to

love, but Carol is a shy soul and it’s hard for

her to reach out. Like LeDaniel, she is guarded but for different reasons.

Big Daddy D (38) - LeDaniel’s body guard and assistant for the last 8 years. Has seen it all with LeDaniel Jenkins and become pretty immune

to his bullshit. Big Daddy is along for the ride

and truly cares about LeDaniel’s well being. He happens to be the only consistent loyal person LeDaniel has had throughout his career and

LeDaniel hasn’t really ever acknowledged it. At times, Big Daddy feels very underappreciated

and probably doesn’t get paid enough for how

much support he provides LeDaniel. A real “yes man” to LeDaniel, but every once in a while he will break his agreeable wall to keep LeDaniel in check. He’s never been able to lock down a

relationship with the lifestyle and attention he

gives to LeDaniel. Our key “straight man” of the story, Big Daddy D often provides the voice of

reason in the ridiculousness of it all. He’s always WTFing LeDaniel and the Sedona screwballs.

such as one he calls the “Zapper.” An

ex-yuppie baby boomer often repping an

extreme, racoon-eyes tan line and vintage Ralph Lauren.

Sean (32) - A millennial lost soul who has recently dove head first into Matteo’s cult.

One of those guys who has switched mental gears multiple times, literally trying every

career path and giving it his all but still feels something is missing inside. He’s taken a huge leap of faith, moving from the East

Coast to Sedona with just a few possessions in his backpack after seeing a Matteo You-

tube video. He is fully committed in following Matteo but struggling with depression and

the larger existential questions deep down.

A FEW SUPPORTING CHARACTERS Trahilio Millman (50s) - Native Amer-

ican Mystic Guide who woke up in Sedona in the early 70s after a vision quest. He’s

stayed there ever since and is sought after as

a spiritual guide and sound healer. He also is a hoop dancer and has released a Grammy award winning ambient flute album in the 90s.

Lena Lebowitz (60s) - UFO enthusiast,

stargazer, astrologer, author, and legendary local. Author of “Essence, Insights into the Energy of Homosexuality.” She’s a Cosmic

Intuitive Visionary who has a deep awareness of the invisible energies shifting in and out of Sedona.

Tristan Schaffer (27) - Young climber and

hippy who has been living and hanging in Sedona - hitch hiked from the New Hampshire Suburbs a few years ago. A bit of a stoner

chatterbox who is hard to get out of a conversation with but well-intentioned. Also, he’s always down to Jam.

Chaz Bungo (44) - The Pink Jeep tour guide who can get the crew anywhere around town.

(Pink Jeep = a real tour guide service in Sedona

that takes groups out on white-knuckle off-road tours through the red rock backcountry in high-

lighter pink jeeps and are known for their extrovert, bro tour guides.)

Tom Condom (38) - LeDaniel Jenkin’s agent and a bit of a sleazeball. He’s got a Rich Paul

vibe to him and loves to get around. Although

he plays the agent game well, he no longer has LeDaniel’s best interests in mind.

Gabi Jenkins (29) - LeDaniel’s wife, manager,

and soon to be ex-wife. She is extremely business savvy, and fierce and brutally honest with Le-

Daniel, which is sometimes what LeDaniel really needs. She’s been hooking up with LeDaniel’s agent, Tom, behind LeDaniel’s back. Simply

said, LeDaniel and her do not have a healthy relationship.

Alexa (25) - One of Matteo’s right hand

confidants and “ladies.” An attractive young

woman that seduces those seeking help from Matteo and often does some of the dirty work.

Lizzy Cunningham (37) - Carol’s longtime friend and a new follower of Matteo. Carol

fears Liz may have been brainwashed and cut off communication with Carol and may be in grave personal danger.

Horace Sloane (65) - James Turrell-type

dude. Land artist, astrophysicist and rancher living on 130 acres just outside Sedona. Saltof-the-earth dude who might be a straight

up genius. His cattle have been mysteriously disappearing from his property.

Tom Delonge (42) - guitarist of Angels

and Airwaves/Blink 182. Takes his album

recording to Sedona to better connect with the aliens he’s allegedly in contact with.

Somehow connected to the cult and murders. Also trying to shoot a UFO doc and him and his camera crew are seen around town being obnoxious.

LEDANIEL’S SECOND THOUGHTS LeDaniel finally meets with Matteo, who blows away his expectations, just like he does with many of his followers. To LeDaniel, Matteo

comes across as a friendly, intelligent, charismatic guy. Matteo confines in him that he is a big

fan of his and absolutely loves hoops. LeDaniel

is blindsided by his humble and kind personality. He tells LeDaniel he knows a way to rid LeDaniel of his injuries to get him back to the All-Star caliber player he once was, dropping certain

insider knowledge on LeDaniel’s life and needs, pulling all the strings LeDaniel needs to hear.

LeDaniel is spellbound and surprised by what he is hearing. Blinded by some of the manipulation of Matteo, LeDaniel is now thinking that this

dude isn’t as evil as everyone says. Carol and Big Daddy D start to call out LeDaniel for believing in Matteo’s initial facade. LeDaniel starts to

drift under the spell of Matteo like Indiana Jones

Sedona crew to Miami to help him prep and excel during the workout. The Miami Heat front office are confused as hell when they

see LeDaniel’s slap-dash entourage of New

Age hippies. Gary tries to “channel in” during LeDaniel’s workout by playing a “hypno-

sis block-removal regression” CD from the stands of the gym. Carol gives the Miami

Heat team a crystal reading. Trahilio sere-

nades the heat cheerleaders with his beautiful flute. Lena gives the GM draft pick predic-

tions by reading astrology charts. The crew hits the town hard and they get into some

wild trouble. LeDaniel is judged by his peers and culture for associating with the Sedona

kooks. He’s conflicted further when he excels and gets an offer from the Heat, having to

choose between saving Sedona or getting his career back on track.

known for.

Continuing on with the narrative from sea-

son one, the arc and conflict between LeDaniel and Matteo could progress through multiple seasons in a serial vein a la Breaking

Bad or Handmaid’s Tale, bringing in new

antagonists, celebrities, and exploring deeper into the arcs of our other New Age home-

town characters. We’d dive further into the

mystery surrounding Season one’s homicide and disappearances, to unearth the greater forces at work within Sedona and its cult

activity. Seasons could ensue with LeDaniel officially retiring from the NBA to reside

in and help the community of Sedona, and possibly getting wrapped up in a New Age foundation of his own making.

Sedona is built around unique characters that

haven’t been explored in today’s storytelling with the insider info lens we now have on New Age

and professional sports culture. These characters and mythology are endlessly ripe for the picking.

THEMES Self-Worth: What everyone in Sedona seems to struggle with. Broken people looking for

self-worth and purpose. The town is a crossroads for both deeply insecure individuals

and sociopaths with God complexes. And LeDaniel, like so many professional athletes towards the end of their career, is facing a cliff

of meaning, desperate to redefine himself and renew his confidence outside of balling out. Image and Identity: Spiritual mystics

trying to present a heightened and godlike

versions of themselves. Seekers trying to re-

define themselves. The pro-athlete search to redefine himself and look for greater meaning & enterprise beyond professional sports (Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Jordan).

Family: The search for family and stability.

LeDaniel and the Sedona crew form a unique bond which turns into a family dynamic that goes beyond friendship.

Abuse of power and influence: Leaders/ gurus/influencers in positions of power that use their status to take advantage of others

and wield that influence in an evil way to abuse, brainwash, and remain in control (i.e. L. Ron

Hubbard, Manson, James Arthur Ray, Bentinho Massaro). LeDaniel himself realizes the power

he wields and once held with his fans and people around him.

Sports and Celebrity Culture: The insane

lifestyle and shenanigans that celebrity athletes do, money they spend, and the life pressures

they face that the rest of society doesn’t exactly comprehend.

Racism: The double-standard and pressure

black athletes face to act a certain way. Criti-

cized for being outspoken (Muhammad Ali, Colin Kaepernick, etc.) or presenting diverse opinions (Michael Beasley, Dennis Rodman, Kyrie

Irving). LeDaniel can’t avoid the condescension in the NBA or Sedona.

New Age Greed: New Age teachers and gurus raking in mad profits. The spiritual community in Sedona is big business and everyone’s com-

peting for a piece of the pie. A moral conflict for

the city officials and residents as they are participants or beneficiaries from the commercial side of spirituality.

Small Town Mentality: Sedona is a bubble and a world unto itself thanks to its reputa-

tion as a New Age epicenter. Those who find themselves in Sedona are largely preoccu-

pied with their own self interests and exhibit

strange and peculiar behavior. LeDaniel isn’t the first celebrity to make a rehabilitative

getaway to Sedona. He’s a big fish in a small

pond that will massage his body, his soul and his ego.

Cult Vulnerability: A desire to belong, low tolerance for ambiguity (need for absolute

answers, impatience to obtain answers), and a lack of self-confidence. These cults offer

quick fix to your problems and other worldly powers.
