Brass-bladed tomahawk with brass bowl, wooden handle. Handle is hollow, and acts as the mouthpiece for the pipe. It is decorated in a sheet of small colored beads forming patterns, and strung with buckskin tassels with trade beads and brass ferrules. The heart cutout brass blade wood have been a common trade good in the 19th century. Original tomahawks of this style would have been brought to peace talks, and passed around as a show of good faith- if the talks went well, the hatchet was ceremonially buried, to confirm the peace. Hence the now common phrase "to bury the hatchet".

OIL PAINTING BY ARTIST HENRY JONES THADDEUS, PORTRAIT OF MARY GARRETT MICHELL, 1885
Gilt framed portrait of woman, seascape background. Artist signed and dated. A large gilt-framed oil painting portrait signed and dated 1885 by artist HENRY JONES THADDEUS (1859 1929), of MARY GARRETT MICHELL (d. April 8, 1921) of Yorkshire, England. Stylized seascape background. Mary was the daughter of Rev. William Thomas Garrett of Crakehalls, York, the Anglican Vicar of East Witton, whose family claimed descent from Sir William Garrett, Lord Mayor of London in 1555. In 1850, Rev. Garrett married Anne Horsfall (d. 1894), member of a prominent Yorkshire family. They had four children, of whom Mary was the youngest. In 1875, Mary Garrett married John Michell (1847-1878), the son of John Michell the Elder, J.P. (justice of the peace; 1819-1896), Magistrate and Deputy Lieutenant of Durham County. The Michells were the landlords of Forcett Hall, an ancient English manor first granted as a gift by William the Conqueror. John Michell the Younger, Mary s husband, had a promising start as a member of Yorkshire s landed gentry: he was appointed Justice of the Peace like his crown officer father, before dying tragically only three years after his marriage, in 1878. At the time she sat for this painting, the young Mary was already seven years a widow. Their home, Forcett Hall originally an Elizabethan house was redesigned in 1740 in the Palladian style by architect Daniel Garrett (possibly an ancestor of Mary). It was owned by the Shuttleworth family from the 16th century until 1785, when Robert Shuttleworth sold the estate to Frances Michell and her son, Charles, ancestor of Mary s husband. The artist, Henry Jones Thaddeus (1859 1929), was a realist and portrait painter born and trained in County Cork, Ireland. Born Henry Thaddeus Jones in 1859, he entered the Cork School of Art when he was ten years old. There he studied under the genre painter James Brenan. Thaddeus won the Taylor Prize in 1878 enabling him to go to London, and then again in 1879, which allowed him to continue his studies in Paris at the Acad mie Julian. His first major painting Le retour du braconnier ("The Wounded Poacher," 1881), now in the National Gallery of Ireland was hung "on the line" (at eye-level) at the Paris Salon of 1881. While in Brittany, he painted several pictures in the port of Concarneau. But it was as a portraitist that Thaddeus made his lasting reputation. His first success in this genre were portraits of the Duke and Duchess of Teck (relatives of the future Queen Mary), which were shown at the Royal Academy in 1884. The Tecks provided him with introductions to other influential sitters. Thaddeus received two portrait commissions from Pope Pius X (and possibly an earlier one for a portrait of Pope Leo XIII in 1885/86). A Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, he traveled widely, including to Egypt in 1889 where he painted the Khedive; this portrait was subsequently presented to Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle. He also traveled to Australia. His autobiography, Recollections of a Court Painter, may have been written during time in California. In his later years he settled in the Isle of Wight and died there at Ryde in 1929. Decades after his death, art historian Julian Campbell became interested in the artist, and assembled an exhibition of Irish Impressionists in 1984 at the National Gallery of Ireland that included examples of Jones s work.

MARC CHAGALL (1887-1985) LITHOGRAPH TITLED LE BOUQUET
Signed, lower right in pencil, and numbered lower left. 240/500. Unframed. Marc Zakharovich Chagall (18871985) was a Russian-born Jewish artist whose deep faith displayed itself across his body of work. In addition to Old Testament themes, Russian village life was a common favorite subject. His dreamy, vividly-colored pieces caused him to be associated with the Surrealists (a charge he vigorously denied). Besides painting, Chagall's huge output included book illustration, set and costume design, murals, lithography and a number of truly amazing stained glass windows.

RARE COLLECTION OF ASPEN MAGAZINE VOL. #1-#6
Complete contents of all 6 prime issues, including a complete Andy Warhol issue. Aspen was a multimedia magazine published on an irregular schedule by Phyllis Johnson from 1965 to 1971. Described by its publisher as "the first three-dimensional magazine," each issue came in a customized box or folder filled with materials in a variety of formats, including booklets, "flexidisc" phonograph recordings, posters, postcards and reels of super-8 movie film. Many of the leading figures in contemporary North American and British art and cultural criticism were editors, designers or contributors to Aspen- Issue #3 was designed by Andy Warhol and David Dalton, and is housed in a box with graphics based on the packaging of "Fab" laundry detergent. Among its contents were a flip-book based on Warhol's film Kiss, and Jack Smith's film Buzzards Over Bagdad, a flexidisc by John Cale of the Velvet Underground, and a "ticket book" with excerpts of papers delivered at the Berkeley conference on LSD by Timothy Leary. Issue #4, designed by Quentin Fiore, showcased the ideas of the Canadian cultural theorist Marshall McLuhan. Highlights of subsequent issues include critical essays by Roland Barthes and Susan Sontag; a multi-part cardboard sculpture by Tony Smith; sound recordings with accompanying printed scores by John Cage, Morton Feldman and La Monte Young; films by Robert Rauschenberg and Hans Richter, and more. Truly an extraordinary- and extraordinarily rare- piece of 1960's pop art and entertainment, Aspen Magazine dripped with class, sophistication, counterculture, and outlandish creative freedom, well ahead of its time. This collection is one of the few examples to arrive at auction in such a complete form, showcasing the core 6-issue run of the publication before it began to only release sporadically for the next 3 years under a different format.

VERY UNUSUAL EARLY SILVER HOT WATER CARAFE
Possibly Persian silver carafe water heater This listing is for a very unusual and cool hot water carafe, possibly from Persia. Dating to the 18th century and in fine condition. The wood base is probably a later addition for decorative purposes as it most likely sat on a burner to heat the cylindrical silver tubes. The water would be poured in at the top where the top crown gets removed and replaced once the tubes were filled, then the water inside would be heated and then poured out through a spout on the right side. Quite an unusual Silver T'pot wouldn't you agree.

VERY RARE 1200 AD MONK MUSIC SHEET
Very rare 1200 AD Monk music sheet framed between glass. Not too many of these have survived in such great condition. This 1200AD Monk Sheet music page on Vellum is framed in a more modern 2 piece glass with brass frame border. The red and black pigments used in making this rare piece have retained a lot of its color vibrancy. It is said that the red pigment used came from crushed cinnabar. A manuscript page in the same manner was sold at Sotheby's in the mid 1970's for a record price of over $100,000.00. There are certainly not many comparable to this very rare piece of history.
