LOT 4: LARGE ROYAL DOULTON ADVERTISING FIGURE, LION WITH SHIELD Rare display piece in high-white porcelain with 22k gold accents. Known as ‘The Advertising Lion’, this large Burslem-designed statuary figure- featuring a triumphant lion abaft a large gilded shield- was only provided to the largest and most prestigious of Royal Doulton dealers throughout the world at the time. One of only 10 examples known to exist, including the model still held by Harrod’s of London, The Advertising Lion has become a highly sought-after collector’s piece. Rendered in Bone china, with ROYAL DOULTON marked prominently in 22k gold on the shield, in the style of the logo developed after Doulton receiving their Royal warrant in 1901. HAND CARVED WOODEN ANGELS AN OUTSTANDING COLLECTION OF 18TH, 19TH, AND 20TH CENTURY CARVED WOODEN SCULPTURES FROM THE SOUTH TYROL, ITALY The South Tyrol, Italy’s northernmost province, is a place rich with beauty, charm, and a deep history—much like the artifacts in wood produced for centuries by the region’s artisans. Val Gardena is in the South Tyrol’s Dolomites mountain range and is a place renowned for woodcarving. Through the centuries, the intricately carved wooden statues and altars have been in great demand by churches around the world, as well as by collectors who find special appeal in the sacred motifs of the wood carvings. The South Tyrolean tradition of woodcarving dates to the 17th century, when, during the winter season, farmers began producing wooden toys and utensils. During the long winter months, men and women carved and painted in their own homes, and in the spring, the crafts produced were taken to market and sold. By the 18th century, the art of wood carving had become central to the region, with South Tyrol masterpieces sold all over the world. During the height of its renown, craftsmen produced figurines in allegorical themes and other motifs. Their work resulted in art both sacred and secular, including wood sculptures of Nativity scenes and spectacular wooden carvings of saints and angels. Today, these carvings are highly prized by collectors as Christmas tree decorations as well as holiday decorative accents for the home.
