An Auction of Chinese, Japanese and East Asian Ceramics, Fine Art and Antiques SUNDAY, MARCH 31, 2019 AT 9AM EST Whitley’s Auctioneers invites you to our highly anticipated spring auction, where we will be presenting works with Royal provenance from three major estates from around the world. Included in the auction are centuries-old examples of Jade, Cloisonné, Satsuma, Jewelry, Stone Carvings and other rare Asian items dating as far back as the 12th century, with many appearing for the first time at auction. Within these pages are some of the exciting highlights from our auction. You will find excellent representations of Guanyin, Lao Tzu, Luohan, and other Taoist and Buddhist motifs, as well as sculptural carvings of dragons, guardian dogs, and even an extinct species of Mongol horse. Please preview the entire auction on our website. Also included in the auction are scholarly works of important historical books and treatises on 19th century Chinese and Japanese decorative arts and architecture – written in English, Spanish and French – that first helped introduce Europeans to the art, culture and treasures of the once “forbidden” East. Brilliantly colored porcelains and ceramics that are being auctioned include works produced by the Imperial Porcelain Factory, Royal Doulton and Goldscheider. Exquisite items in hallmarked silver from sought-after brands including Reid and Son, Thomas Heming – the Principal Gold and Silversmith to King George III – Walter and John Barnard as well as works attributed to the Zuloaga Family will be available for sale. Categories of Fine and Decorative Arts include: Modern and Impressionism, American Realism, Tonalism and the Belle Epoque. Notably, works of art recently de-acquisitioned from the Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta, Florida are being offered. Founded by Christopher Norton, son of the founders of Palm Beach’s Norton Museum, the Lighthouse ArtCenter consists of a two-building campus. Funds from the sale of historical artists like Ellen Pyle, a portrait of Elizabeth Norton by Louis Betts, Alfred Hair of the Florida Highway Men, A.E. Backus and Bruno Zach will be allocated to Phase I of a two phase capital campaign focused on purchasing the School of Art . COLLECTION OF
Founded by Christopher Norton, son of the founders of Palm Beach’s Norton Museum, the Lighthouse ArtCenter consists of a two-building campus, including 4,300 sq. ft. of classroom space on 395 Seabrook Road and 8,000 sq. ft. of exhibition and classroom space on 373 Tequesta Drive. For the past 21 years, they have leased the School of Art building from the current owner who has put the building up for sale. Phase I of a two phase capital campaign focuses on purchasing the School of Art and paying off the remaining mortgage on the Gallery. The Lighthouse has thus decided to part with some of their collection from when they were a museum to help fund this growth. Phase II will double the Gallery space to include more classrooms and programs, as well as upgrade the exhibition areas. Phase II will commence as soon as the successful purchase of the School of Art is complete. Whitley’s Auctioneers is honored to be assisting one of South Florida’s oldest cultural institutions in their efforts to save and expand their School of Art through this auction, and many more in the near future.
