Sharing Real Moments
About Us From the very beginning, Instagram was set to be a success story. In fact, it had 1 million users in only 2 months after its launch and it kept on expanding ever since. Instagram knew how to continually improve itself adding brand new features and new photo effects. After becoming available on Android phones and very recently adding direct messaging, Instagram may have a place for itself that will last for many years to come.
The Team Kevin Systrom (@kevin) is the CEO and co-founder of Instagram, a community of more than 300 million who capture and share the world's moments on the service. He is the man responsible for the company's vision and strategy as well as day-to-day operations. Since the beginning, Kevin has focused on simplicity and inspiring creativity by problem solving with thoughtful product design. As a result, Instagram has become essential for visual storytelling for everyone from celebrities, to newsrooms and brands, to teens, musicians and anyone with a creative passion. Prior to Instagram, Kevin was part of the startup Odeo, which then became Twitter, and also spent two years at Google working on products like Gmail and Google Reader. He is a Stanford graduate with a BS in Management Science & Engineering and serves on the boards of Walmart and KCRW. Mike Krieger (@mikeyk) is the technical lead and co-founder of Instagram, a global community that shares more than 60 million photos every day. As the head of engineering, Mike concentrates on building products that bring out the creativity in all of us. A native of Brazil, Mike holds an MS in Symbolic Systems from Stanford University. Prior to founding Instagram, he worked at Meebo as a user experience designer and front-end engineer.

The first worldwide Instameet had an extravagant turnout as thousands made connections within the community.
First Worldwide InstaMeet Today, we’re introducing an easy way for you to get together with other Instagrammers in your area, so whatever part of the world you live in everyone can get connected. To kick things off, we’re hosting a worldwide InstaMeet on 24 March, when Instagrammers in all different parts of the world start to gather in their hometowns to meet other members and make connections in the Instagram community. How Does It Work? Go to meetup.com/instagram to join your city’s Instagram meetup group. Once other folks in your area say they’re interested, you can choose a location and meet. Someone can even volunteer to be the organizer to help move the process along. What Will We Do? The goal of the Worldwide InstaMeet is simply to meet and get together with other users in your area. In Portland, @grether organized one of the very first Instameets. “Just get people in a social space with their phones and start talking about this shot

or that, this app or that,” he says. That same approach has worked for Instameets in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York, too. If you’re looking for structure, consider organizing a joyful and fun walk through photowalk, which users in San Francisco Bath, UK has done. Or find an event in your area that fellow Instagrammers might be there interested in doing all sorts of activities with you for fun. Just the other day, Instagrammers met up at the Apple Store in Manhattan to listen to @sionfullana’s talk on iPhoneography.
Spread the Word Once you’ve joined your city’s meetup group, help spread the word to other Instagrammers in your area. • Use the hashtag #instameet on Instagram to post about all types of meetups • Post a note for your followers letting them know all about the Instagram meetup page
@whatafox shares her experience after hosting an instameet in Orlando, FL.
• Post a link to your city’s meetup page on Facebook and Twitter; email the page to your friends

April 9, 2012 Facebook Buys Instagram When Mike and I started Instagram nearly two years ago, in order to improve the way the world communicates and shares. We’ve been having an amazing time watching Instagram grow into a vibrant community of people from all around. Today, we couldn’t be happier to announce that Instagram has agreed to be acquired by Facebook. Every day that passes, we see the more experiences being shared through Instagram in ways that we never thought possible. It’s because of our dedicated and talented team that we’ve gotten this far, and it’s with the support and cross-pollination that ideas and talent take a place like Facebook, we hope to create an even more exciting future for Instagram and Facebook alike.

August 16, 2012 Launch of Photo Maps Introducing Photo Maps, a brand new way to browse photos on Instagram. Your Photo Map appears on your profile and lets you showcase your photos on a map. Also, you’ll be able to see other users’ maps from their profiles as well. With an Instagram Photo Map, you can showcase where you’ve taken your photos or explore where others have taken photos on a map. Maps take you beyond recently posted photos and let you rediscover previously Instagrammed memories. You can edit your map at any time and will always be able to opt into each and every photo you add to your map. It’s a beautiful new way for you and others to view your Instagram photos. When you take a photo while connected via Wi-Fi or 3G, your phone

logs the coordinates where the photo was taken. So using that information, you can now add that photo to a Photo Map! It’s the easiest way to add context to photos, document travels and see photos other Instagrammers have taken nearby. By default, adding locations or adding to your Photo Map will turned off all photos you upload to Instagram. This means that there photos will appear on your Photo Map without any kind of permission from you.

A Look at Ads on Instagram A few weeks ago, we shared our plans to introduce advertising on Instagram. Today, we want to provide a few more details about exactly what ads on Instagram will look like. If you’re in the United States, you’ll see the sample ad above sometime in the coming week. This is a one-time ad from the Instagram team that’s meant to give you a sense for the look and feel of the ads you will see. You’ll know when a photo or video is an advertisement when you see the “Sponsored” label where the time stamp normally would be. Tap to learn more about how advertising works. We want all ads to be creative and engaging, so we’re starting with just a handful of brands that are already great members of the Instagram community. When you see an ad that may not interest you, you can tap below it to hide it and provide feedback about what and why you specifically didn’t like. This will help us show you better interesting ads in the future.

MCM, or Man Crush Monday, is an acronyms oftenly used on Instagram. A user will share a photo of a man whom they see as attractive or have a crush on them, they will add the hashtag MCM . Users will often refer to theses men that they post as their “MCMs”. These #MCM posts are of models, actors, or a boyfriend of a user. Sometimes a MCM will be posted as a joke with an unflattering photograph of a user’s friend. MCM seems to be most popular.

#TransformationTuesday #TravelTuesday #TuesdayBoozeDay #TuesdayTreat
Tuesdays, users are encouraged to post any “transformational” photos of themselves along with the hashtag in the description. People create them in a form of a “before and after” photo, often using photo collage maker apps to break up the photo into two parts so that one side shows the before photo and the other side shows the after taking a photo. The “transformation” part of the trend is up to how you interpret it. Some people post photos of themselves when they were children alongside a photo of them all grown up. Others will share

#ThrowBackThursday or #TBT #ThirstyThursday (drinking on Thursday) #ThursdayFunDay #Thursdate (for midweek dates) #ThankfulThursday
Throwback Thursday is a trendy name for a weekly social media posting trend and hashtag game that users participate in to share and look back fondly on some of their favorite memories hence the “throwback” theme. In this case, the “throwback” part of a post can pertain to basically anything that happened in the past. You may find that a lot of users on Instagram will take advantage of the often #TBT hashtag and fill them with all sorts of spams or unrelated content in hopes of gaining more likes and followers.

A Selfie Sunday was invented to bring a purpose to selfies on a particular day of the week which in this case is Sunday. A picture that’s taken of yourself is to be uploaded to Instagram. You can usually see the person’s arm is holding out the camera in which you can so clearly tell that this person does not have friends around to take a picture of them.
