WHAT IS NAMI? FROM ITS INCEPTION IN 1979, NAMI HAS BEEN DEDICATED TO IMPROVING THE LIVES OF INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES AFFECTED BY MENTAL ILLNESS. FOR THREE DECADES, NAMI HAS ESTABLISHED ITSELF AS THE MOST FORMIDABLE GRASSROOTS MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCACY ORGANIZATION IN THE COUNTRY. DEDICATION, STEADFAST COMMITMENT AND UNCEASING BELIEF IN NAMI’S MISSION BY GRASSROOTS ADVOCATES HAVE PRODUCED PROFOUND CHANGES. NAMI’S GREATEST STRENGTH IS THE DEDICATION OF OUR GRASSROOTS LEADERS AND MEMBERS. WE ARE FAMILIES, FRIENDS, AND INDIVIDUALS THAT SERVE TO STRENGTHEN COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

CHALLENGE: ADAPTING TO CAMPUS LIFE WHAT ARE THE RELEVANT INTERSECTION POINTS? HOW DO WE MAKE NAMI SOCIALLY AND CULTURALLY RELEVANT? WHAT ABOUT NAMI IS ‘BADGE’ WORTHY?

OUR APPROACH WE APPROACHED IT NOT AS AN ADVERTISING OR BRANDING PROBLEM, BUT AS A PEOPLE PROBLEM. CAMPUS LIFE IS FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT FROM THE REAL WORLD. MAIN QUESTION WE ASKED OURSELVES: WHAT DO CAMPUSES NEED?

METHODOLOGY GOAL: DELVE INTO CAMPUS LIFE AND MENTAL HEALTH WORLD QUANTITATIVE SURVEY 40+ PARTICIPANTS 1:1 MAN ON THE STREET 1:1 IN-DEPTH INTERVIEWS WITH MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS 1:1 IN-DEPTH INTERVIEW WITH ON CAMPUS NAMI

WHY AREN’T THE NEEDS BEING MET?

FINDINGS: THE CONVERSATION CULTURE YOU NEVER WANT TO COMBINE MENTAL HEALTH WITH MENTAL ILLNESS, PEOPLE WON’T RESPOND. IT’S A LOT EASIER TO FLIP THE CONVERSATION AND TALK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH

ERIC GARRISON, OFFICE OF HEALTH EDUCATION AT W&M

FINDINGS: THE SUPPORT BARRIERS WHEN IT COMES TO LEADING SUPPORT GROUPS, I FEEL LIKE I’M NOT TRAINED WELL ENOUGH. I NEED A MANUAL OR SOMEONE TO SHOW ME HOW TO LEAD THE DISCUSSIONS.

JILLIAN ROGERS, PRESIDENT OF NAMI AT SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY

FINDINGS: THE CONVERSATION BARRIERS I THINK IT’S A LOT EASIER TO TALK TO YOUR PEERS RATHER THAN PEOPLE YOU DON’T KNOW. IT HELPS TO TALK TO SOMEONE WHOSE BEEN THROUGH IT. THEY KNOW WHAT YOU’RE GOING THROUGH.

GRACE, UNDERGRAD STUDENT AT VCU

INSIGHTS FRAMING MENTAL HEALTH AROUND ‘MENTAL ILLNESSES’ LIMITS NAMI’S REACH AND APPEAL ON CAMPUS.

STRATEGY BROADEN THE FOCUS

ON THEIR OWN, STUDENTS DON’T BELIEVE THEY ARE A CREDIBLE SUPPORT RESOURCE FOR THEIR FRIENDS.

EMPOWER CAMPUS LEADERS

IT’S NOT THAT STUDENTS DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH, THEY JUST DON’T KNOW HOW TO BEGIN THE CONVERSATION.

BRING THE CONVERSATION TO THEM

MAIN IDEA DECENTRALIZE NAMI ON CAMPUS TO LOCALIZE THE CONVERSATION

TACTICS: SHIFT THE FOCUS REACH OUT TO ALL CAMPUS MEMBERS 5-S INITIATIVE: SEEKING SENSIBLE SUPPORT SHOWS STRENGTH

TACTICS: EMPOWER CAMPUS LEADERS AND BRING THE CONVERSATION TO THEM ANYONE CAN BECOME NAMI ON CAMPUS CERTIFIED TRAINING WEBINARS TRAINING MANUAL PDF SUPPORT GROUP TRAINING MATERIALS PDF A FORUM FOR YOUTUBE VIDEOS FOR SPECIFIC ISSUES AND QUESTIONS CUSTOMIZABLE AWARENESS FLIER PDFS
