Ardastra Revived MAKE: Maasai Creativity The In-Between Film Festival Caribbean Dreams Rebranding For the <3 of Green
Ardastra Revived Date: Spring 2017 Project Description: I researched and selected an outdated brand based on keyword explorations and created an all-new identity for it. I developed a range of deliverables that supported the brand update. Kind of Project: Branding Discipline: Identity, Print, App Design, Stationery Design, and Swag Design Class: The Nature of Identity Professor: Thomas McNulty
Project Concept: The only zoo in The Bahamas, The Ardastra Gardens, Zoo, and Conservation Centre, was in need of a serious brand update. Their logo lacked thoughtful design and there was no preexisting identity. Upon a visit to the zoo, it was confirmed that an update was needed. I wanted to create specific guidelines that would ignite excitement for the zoo in order to encourage more visitors, volunteers, and sponsors. The redesigned brandmark was inspired by the flamingo, which is the biggest tourist attraction to the zoo and also the national bird of The Bahamas. Fun fact—the mark was the foundation of the grid created for the brand. The colors, typefaces, and deliverables had to look “cool” to my target audience. I wanted the brand to appeal to teens and young adults as they are the ones that will keep the zoo alive.

MAKE: Maasai Creativity Date: Fall 2014 Project Description: We were asked to choose a topic to design an 80-page book along with a website. Kind of Project: Typesetting, Layout Discipline: Typography, Print, Photography, and Website Design Class: Type Systems Professor: Lian Ng
Project Concept: I chose to design a book about the Maasai ethnic group of Kenya. My parents have a large coffee table book about the Maasai people that I always used to pick up and read as a child because of my interest in culture and ethnicity. The visuals kept me coming back. I was inspired to design a smaller, more condensed version of that book but instead, I wanted the typography to create even more visual interest than the photography alone. The color red is prominent throughout the book since it holds great importance to the Maasai people (preferred garment color, ochre painted on the body and hair, and nutritious and healing cattle blood).

The In-Between Film Festival Date: Fall 2016 Project Description: For this project, I designed a film festival of films by the director Jonathan Demme. I designed a visual system that was applied to deliverables that included a website, environmental designs, and a boxed promotional kit. Kind of Project: Branding, Event Design Discipline: Identity, Photography, Packaging, Animation, Illustration, Environmental Design, Print, Website Design, and App Design Class: Integrated Communications Professor: Marc English
Project Concept: The six featured films at the festival are Melvin and Howard (1980), Something Wild (1986), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Philadelphia (1993), Beloved (1998), and Rachel Getting Married (2008) inspired the visual system. These six films were chosen as they represent nearly three decades of transition, growth, and revolution. The film genres range but all focus on the human story. The festival name “The In-Between represents the way in which Demme makes his audience connect with the characters by making them feel like they are part of the dialogue. It also symbolizes the time that he spent as a film director, in between being a film critic and his current endeavors as a documentary director. Another way that I wanted to connect the festival to Jonathan Demme was incorporating his love of music and birds into the deliverables as frequently and subtly as possible. One of the ways that I really felt like I got to understand Jonathan Demme better was through a phone interview I had with his friend, Louis Black (writer, filmmaker, producer, and co-founder of SXSW).

Caribbean Dreams Rebranding Date: Summer 2016 Project Description: We redesigned the packaging for a stale tea brand. Kind of Project: Package Design, Branding Discipline: Packaging, Identity, Print, Prototyping, Photography Class: Package Design 2 Professor: Thomas McNulty
Project Concept: I chose a brand in my region to work with. I ended up choosing Caribbean Dreams which is a tea company based in Jamaica. I was familiar with the brand and I actually quite enjoy their teas. However, I think the packaging is dull and a bit generic. I wanted to redesign the boxes so they reflected the vibrancy of the tropical country and tea flavours. The shape of the box I made was used because it was a unique shape that had a very organic look to it which was inspired by the different plants that the tea is derived from. Another goal was to encourage people who weren’t from the Caribbean to give these different flavours a try through graphic design.

For the <3 of Green Date: Fall 2015 Project Description: For this project, I was asked to choose a color and to create meaning through typography. Kind of Project: Poster Design, Typographic Discipline: Typography, Photography, Layout Design Class: Type Experiments Professor: Lian Ng
Project Concept: I wanted to use this assignment to really let loose and play around with unconventional materials to write out words. Green has been my favorite color since childhood and this played a significant role in how much fun I was having throughout the iterative stages of this project. I wanted to create different moods and feelings with the word choices and the styling of each poster. The project housing was an idea that came up when I was thinking of project titles. The idea behind using an envelope was a play on a love letter that someone would receive from an admirer.
