COMMUNITY BACKBONE
Affordable Housing Prototype for Nicholtown, SC Nicholtown is a community that is in the midst of rediscovering and redefining their community. Through a SWOT analysis of the community and the 13 Ackley Road site, it was found that there ae numerous opportunities in the community for redevelopment and reengagement. However, the primary threat to the community currently is the lack of a unifying element in both the neighborhood. Currently, both Nicholtown and the 13 Ackley Road site have a need for a unifying element - such as a backbone. The client, Pastor Dale Gilreath, offered flexibility for the program to grow as the community that he serves through the church grows. For the client, the ideal design lends itself to mveability and to the possibility of relocation in the future. The design of the project strives to introduce a new “backbone, both physically and metaphorically, to the site and ultimately to the community. The design is modular to allow for ease and speed of construction, ease of relocation, cost effectiveness, and finally the ability for the program to expand and contract as needed. The resulting design is a series of living, eating, or sleeping modules that can plug into or unplug from the deck and awning which serve as the backbone of the design. The ultimate goal of the design is to allow customization and flexibility in prefabricated construction to accomodate the needs of the client, the constrains of the budget, and to employ principles of sustainable design and construction.

ALAMEDA GREENLINE Urban Strategies for Nicholtown, SC The goal of the Alameda Greenline Project is to establish a new gateway for Nicholtown that will capitalize on current pedestrian traffic generated by the Swamp Rabbit Trail. The long term strategy is to create establish a Greenline that runs through the neighborhood and stimulates improvements in the community’s access to healthcare and fresh food, will generate income for the neighborhood, create public gathering spaces, and foster connections to surrounding neighborhoods. Currently, there is a lack of healthcare facilities and grocery stores in Nicholtown. These threats to health and well being of community members, in addition to a lack of a local neighborhood economy, the absence of a dedicated public gathering space, and perpetual isolation from surrounding neighborhoods are issues that this project hopes to address and eventually mitigate. The first phase of this project is to establish the Green Forest Park node that will create a new entry point for the Swamp Rabbit Trail, provide multifunctional community gathering spaces, and most importantly, serve as the catalyst for future developments along the Alameda Greenline. The spatial strategy of the project is to lead the program users through a series of nodes that will be established, through the implementation of future phases, along the Alameda Greenline. In the first four phases of the project, the goal is to create an experience that encourages interaction with the landscape and a public space that is able to host a variety of community events from health and wellness clinics to farmers markets to festivals, concerts, and other activities. Finally the proposed concept will be realized with the support of local non-profits and corporate sponsors with the goal being to generate enough momentum behind the project that it will become financially self-sustaining within 10 years.
