City Of Whittier
UPDATE MAYOR Joe Vinatieri
Summer is over and we are back to business this month! If you’ve been enjoying some time off over the past few weeks and are ready to put your business plan into action, the City can help. From large corporations to entrepreneurs, Whittier is proud of our growing business community. Whether you need help hiring employees, or you’ve found the perfect location but need permits or a license, our Business Development Manager is available to assist you with walking through the steps and streamlining the process. Through partnerships with the Whittier Chamber of Commerce, the Whittier Uptown Association, America’s Job Center of California, and the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation, we can connect you to the right people and the resources you need to get started. In addition, the local chapter of SCORE offers oneon-one business consultations every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at the Whittier Chamber office. Call (562) 698-9554 to schedule an appointment today or contact the City’s Business Development Manager at (562) 5679351 for information on opening your business in Whittier. In other business news, I’m sure many of you have noticed the activity happening at the former Smart & Final site across from the Friendly Hills Marketplace. For those of you who love a good DIY home improvement project, you’ll be happy to know you can soon purchase a variety of handy tools from
MAYOR’S MESSAGE Harbor Freight which is set to take over the vacant building later this month. We’re looking forward to other great businesses opening this fall including new Latin restaurant, Kulturas, getting ready to serve dishes at the former Ciao Italia location in Uptown Whittier, as well as Whittier Brewing Co. at the Nixon Plaza coming very soon. Speaking of Uptown, some of you may have noticed cleaner sidewalks and uniformed ambassadors while out and about over the last few weeks. The new Uptown Whittier Improvement Association, made up of Uptown Whittier property owners, has already begun implementing noticeable improvements in the area by hiring additional security and a full service maintenance crew. They’re looking at other ways to continue building the Uptown brand and attracting visitors to dine and shop, and we all love hearing that encouragement to shop local! One of the ways the City supports Uptown, and businesses across our community, is through ongoing revitalization of infrastructure improvements like sewer, electrical and water line upgrades, as well as a much anticipated parking structure slated to begin construction early next year. There are millions of dollars we’re spending to keep up the foundation on which all residents and businesses depend – and one of our challenges is that all of this investment and hard work is, often times, not noticeable. The City Council will take another look
at the proposed Uptown Streetscape Beautification Plan on September 11th so we encourage those of you who participated in the community workshops to attend and share your comments regarding ideas for outdoor dining, public art, and other components. On a more lighthearted side, mark your calendars for the final free “Moonlight Movie Night” at dusk on Saturday, September 1, sponsored by the City and the Whittier Community Foundation. Enjoy a warm evening under the stars and the film “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” on an inflatable 28-foot movie screen at Parnell Park. Moviegoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for festival-style seating and a picnic dinner. Please remember that pets, barbeques and alcoholic beverages are not allowed. Call us at (562) 5679400 for more information. Lastly, if you or someone you know is looking for the right employment opportunity, don’t miss an upcoming job fair sponsored by Rio Hondo College on Wednesday, September 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Network with recruiters and learn more about positions available within the community. For more information, please call (562) 908-3407. As a reminder, school is back in session so please be careful driving and be especially cautious during mornings and afternoons when our kids are out walking.
Uptown Whittier Improvement Association Brings Change to the Community! The Uptown Whittier Improvement Association (UWIA), a non-profit 501(c) (3) corporation created to operate the Uptown Whittier Community Benefit District has been working to bring positive changes to the community. The UWIA focuses on the areas of public safety, beautification, economic development, maintenance and promotions to make Uptown a clean and safe community for all to enjoy. To date, the UWIA has hired Coastal Landscape Services to provide Uptown Whittier with a dedicated cleaning crew to maintain the overall cleanliness of
Uptown making the area more attractive for its property owners, business owners, residents and visitors. The crew currently focuses on power washing the sidewalks in an effort to remove gum and deep stains; cleaning the public rights of way; removing graffiti; and picking up trash in the streets and alleys. Catch the crew Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and pressure washing the sidewalks from 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. The UWIA also initiated an Ambassador Program in mid-July 2018 with the goal to bring additional safety to Uptown. The UWIA hired veteran owned
and operated, Aleco Security to provide Ambassadors to patrol Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 3:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. The services to the district include: providing an escort to your vehicle; assisting in nuisances including loitering, skateboarders, transient issues, curfews and intoxicated customers; and the team dispatching 911 in situations involving crime or theft to provide support to the local police department. More information about the UWIA is on Twitter @OurUWIA and Facebook/ Instagram @OurUptownWhittier.

Boots, Beer & BBQ kicks off community-wide firefighter tribute fundraiser Lookin’ for a great ol’ boot scootin’, two steppin’, fun-loving time with your friends and neighbors? Well, we have an event designed just for you! The Whittier Community Foundation will be hosting its first annual Boots, Beer & BBQ event on Saturday, September 29 from 6:00 – 10:30 p.m. on top of the parking deck at The Quad at Whittier (13502 Whittier Blvd). Tickets are $35 per person with sponsorship opportunities available for businesses and groups of friends, and can be purchased through the Foundation’s website at www.whittiercf.org. The entry price includes a delicious BBQ dinner, 1 drink, dance lessons and great live entertainment. “This event is a great way to bring the community together, celebrate Whittier and raise money for a great cause,” stated WCF Executive Board member and event chair Chris Hardeman. Money raised from the event will help fund a statue tribute to our Los Angeles County firefighters which will be placed in front of Station 28 on Greenleaf Avenue. “Since its inception in 2005, The Whittier Community Foundation has focused on funding projects and services that make a difference in our community,” explained WCF President Fran Shields. In 2011, their first “big” project was to fund, design and oversee the construction of the Whittier Police Memorial. Late last year, the Foundation began to discuss how it could best honor all of Whittier’s brave first responders including the Los Angeles County Fire Department, who faithfully protect our community year-round. The campaign to raise money for this new tribute involves raising $160,000. The B,B & B bonanza will feature delicious barbeque catered by Orchard’s BBQ & Grill, a variety of beverage selections in the beer garden, and foot stompin’ live music performed by the 5-piece Just Dave Band. “We are expecting more than 200 people to come out and enjoy a fun and festive community party,” continued Hardeman. Don’t know how to dance? No worries! Local DJ and dance instructor Rudy Hernandez will be teaching line dancing, country western two step, waltz and swing beginning at 6:30 p.m. Great toe tapping live music will begin at 7:30 p.m. “This will be a night full of fun, great music, dancing, good food and a chance to get to know your neighbors,” summed up Hardeman. So, dust off your boots, find your cowboy hat, throw on some jeans, grab your friends and giddy up on down to the Boots, Beer & BBQ bonanza! See y’all there!

The Latest Scams Scammers continue to work hard to get your money. Here are some scams to watch out for: • Letters, emails, and phone calls about someone having private information about you or your family asking for $$$ to keep quiet. They will threaten to “go public” with the information if they are not paid. Scammers will ask for payment via gift cards or cash cards. Hang up. • Letters, emails, and phone calls about you or someone in your family having warrants, owing a student loan debt, being late on utility bills, owing more to the IRS, asking for payment over the phone or Internet to “clear them up”. Scammers will ask for payment via gift cards or cash cards. Hang up. • Fake online coupons that show up
in your social media feed promising free shopping sprees, hundreds of dollars to spend at local stores... just for clicking??? Avoid these as they will lead to other websites connected to scamming operations. • Official looking virus pop-up windows and unsolicited phone calls stating your computer has a virus. Don’t click, don’t call the number, hang up as soon as you hear this information. They want access to your computer to fix something that isn’t broken for a fee. • Pet adoption from distant places usually starts on Craigslist, Offerup etc. and the scammers will require various payments for various “stages” of the delivery including licensing, immunizations, flight fees, customs, etc. - victims will get multiple phone
calls asking for more money to complete the “journey” of their desired pet. There is no pet. • Fortnite - many scams going around relating to this very popular online game. Kids are always looking to gevt more “stuff” for their online characters... weapons, skins, dances etc. and there are many scammers out there willing to “sell” your kid a “fully loaded” account. Most of these offers are fake, with payment being made by a gift card but nothing delivered in exchange. • Deposit a check you get in the mail, keep a little for yourself and wire the rest to someone’s account??? Nope.... you will deposit a worthless check... wire your real money to an off-shore scammer... and when the
bank will tell you in a few days that the check was fake... you will be out some major $$$. Throw these types of envelopes away. Scammers LOVE payment via cash cards or gift cards - hard to trace and you can’t get your money back like with most credit card protections. If anyone is asking you or a family member to pay for anything with gift cards or cash cards.... you know it’s most likely a scam. These scams hit elderly community members the hardest - please take the time to educate family members, friends, and neighbors who are elderly to hang up or call someone they trust before taking any action on any unsolicited request for payment

Women inspiring women to be the best they can be in the workplace and beyond
SEPTEMBER 2018 RUTH B.
SHANNON CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
Women in Business “Power Brunch” Scheduled for October 26 Comedian Kathy Buckley was born with a hearing loss. As a result, she spent the first part of her life misdiagnosed and misunderstood. No stranger to adversity, Buckley survived countless tragedies including sexual abuse, a freak accident which left her partially paralyzed for five years and a battle with cervical cancer. Not one to be knocked down, Buckley grew stronger through each of these challenges. Today she dedicates her life to sharing the message that anything can be achieved when the heart and the mind work together. Her extraordinary story is truly amazing to all who experience it. The Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Santa Fe Springs Chamber of Commerce, is honored to have Kathy Buckley share her motivational story at the annual Women in Business “Power Brunch” taking place on Friday, October 26 from 9 – 11 a.m. outside in the beautiful Clarke Estate gardens (10211 Pioneer Blvd., Santa Fe Springs). This event is designed to inspire women to be the best they can be in the workplace and beyond. Before Buckley’s presentation begins, guests will enjoy networking, fellowship, and a delicious brunch. “This event is so much more than
a seminar or a workshop,” stated Claudia Fimbres, of BlueMoon OnStage. “It truly is an opportunity to build community with other women who are working hard every day to find balance and overcome obstacles. Supporting each other and finding strength in our common paths is what it’s all about!” she continued. Sharing her unique life experiences with the audience, Buckley inspires laughter, breaks down barriers, and empowers change. No matter the audience, her presentations touch each and every person. An important part of her message is to urge her audience members to remove the labels society has placed on them, as well as those they have placed on themselves; encouraging each person to make a change, become self-confident, self-aware, and strive for self-growth. “I’ve had the pleasure of hearing Kathy speak several times and I can tell you she has an amazing ability to connect to everyone in the room with her stories and slices of inspiration,” added Fimbres. “She is a masterful public speaker and I guarantee that anyone who attends the Women in Business Power Brunch will leave feeling inspired and empowered. You don’t want to miss this chance to hear from one of the
country’s leading motivational speakers,” Fimbres recommended. If you are interested in attending the Women in Business Power Brunch on Friday, October 26 please register online at whittierchamber.com. Members of the Whittier Chamber or Santa Fe Springs Chamber only pay $25, non-members pay $35. Please contact the Chamber office directly at 562 698-9554 if you would like to reserve a table (8 seats) for members of your staff or organization. The Groves at Whittier Construction Update Over the past five months since Brookfield Residential broke ground on The Groves at Whittier, construction has been in full swing with the deconstruction of buildings, salvaging materials and clearing of trees. The old gymnasium, maintenance building, and auditorium have all been broken down and materials that were recovered from these deconstructions will be utilized on- and off-site. In the coming months, continued demolition, soil remediation, grading and possibly the start of the Chapels Building restoration and perimeter/ retaining wall construction will be on the list of planned construction activities. Off-site, new sewer, storm drain and
water systems adjacent to the street will be installed along with the possibility of widening Sorensen. Brookfield Residential has stayed in constant communication with the neighboring community by direct mail and fliers to alert them of upcoming construction activities, ensuring proper dust control measures are followed, informing them of road construction and preparing the property line for perimeter wall construction. The anticipated grand opening of The Groves at Whittier is April 2020, so mark your calendars! For more information on the growth of The Groves, please contact Chris Ball at (714) 707-0637, Marlo Mole at (714) 745-1504 or visit brookfieldrp.com.

Mosquitos and West Nile Virus on the rise in Whittier
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LAC DPH) has identified Whittier as one of the top 5 cities in 2018 with the highest risk for West Nile Virus (WNV). Mosquitoes are everywhere, and, while you may have only noticed them when hiking or camping, they are in your neighborhoods and sometimes even inside your home. Aside from the pesky itching that sometimes accompanies bites, mosquitoes can carry viruses and make you sick. Last year’s WNV season was one of the county’s worst with 268 cases and 27 fatalities, the highest number of fatalities on record. LAC DPH documented seven cases in Whittier in 2017, resulting in one fatality. WNV infection has been reported among Whittier residents every year for the past five years, an average of approximately eight cases per year. In Los Angeles County, residents often become sick with WNV between June and November when mosquitoes
are most abundant and active, though infection can sometimes occur outside these months. September is the month with the highest number of cases. While everyone is at risk for infection, people over 50 years of age and those who have chronic medical conditions are at higher risk of severe disease and death. There is no vaccine or specific treatment for WNV so the most effective way to prevent illness is to protect yourself from mosquito bites. Residents can protect themselves and their neighborhood from mosquitoes and the diseases they can carry by getting rid of standing water in and around the home. If residents are outside for long periods of time, especially at dawn and dusk, use an EPA registered mosquito repellent (e.g. DEET, oil of lemon eucalyptus, Picaridin, or IR3535) and wear long sleeves and pants. To report a mosquito issue in your area, call Greater Los Angeles Vector Control at (562) 364-9589.

PIH Health and CHOC Children’s Affiliation leads to new pediatric health center opening today PIH Health and CHOC Children’s have formed a new affiliation that advances pediatric clinical care for children in the communities of Los Angeles and Orange counties. As a part of this affiliation, a CHOC Children’s Health Center opens today in PIH Health’s Whittwood Medical Office Building located in Whittier at 15725 E. Whittier Blvd., suite 300. CHOC’s Health Center will provide pediatric neurology, gastroenterology and cardiology services with more specialties to be added in the future to meet the community’s pediatric care needs. The need for pediatric healthcare expertise is significant in the PIH Health communities. PIH Health Physicians currently see more than 45,000 pediatric patients annually, with nearly 30,000 pediatric visits in the emergency departments at PIH Health hospitals in Whittier and Downey. This affiliation will ensure that newborns and children living in the areas served by PIH Health will have access to some of the highestquality pediatric specialty care available anywhere. Later this year, a CHOC boardcertified pediatrician will staff PIH Health’s Whittier Urgent Care Center at 15733 Whittier Blvd., to provide
dedicated pediatric care for children in need of urgent medical attention. “We are pleased to be expanding our long-standing relationship with CHOC Children’s to better serve our community. While PIH Health already provides outstanding primary care pediatric services for children, CHOC’s exceptional reputation, physicians and staff will elevate the level of care by now offering pediatric specialty services here in our community,” said PIH Health President and CEO Jim West. Local residents can continue to access their primary care pediatricians and a growing list of specialists near their homes, while timely transport to CHOC Children’s Hospital will be available for neonatal and pediatric patients in need of higher acuity care. “PIH Health has an inspiring history of serving the greatest needs of its community, a commitment we share. Both of our health care systems are dedicated to exceptional and innovative care delivered by teams of compassionate and highly skilled healthcare professionals who strive to improve the health and well-being of our patients. Working together, we will secure the brightest and healthiest futures for children,” said CHOC Children’s President and CEO Kimberly Chavalas Cripe.

NO MORE PAIN! Breakthrough Treatment Now Available In Whittier
Whittier, CA - Imagine forty years ago if you were told that lasers would replace scalpels in surgery or that robotic instruments would build cars; you may not have believed it. By the same token, would you believe that chiropractic treatments could be performed using a special hand-held instrument developed by NASA scientists; all while you were sitting in an upright position without any turning or twisting movements? According to Dr. Yani Feliciano, “This new form of computerized treatment is so gentle and effective, that it truly amazes even the most skeptical patients. It’s called the Ultralign and it’s the newest version of the Proadjuster which is the latest, stateof-the-art technology in existence today, and the only one in Whittier.” This technology can safely and gently analyze and treat the spine and other joints to remove the nerve impingement that is often the cause of pains in the low back, neck, shoulders and elsewhere in the body. It also works on a variety of muscular conditions to loosen tight muscles with ease and comfort. Many patients say that it’s like getting a mini-massage. Even patients with knee, hip and foot problems such as Dr. Yani uses the ProAdjuster to analyze a patient’s spine and pin-point plantar fascitis are being helped. It is also covered by most insurance areas of nerve impingement syndrome companies including Medicare. causing malfunction and pain. Dr. Yani says that “The secret to this technology lies in its ability to deliver an extremely precise and gentle adjustment.” She says that, “Even though traditional forms of adjusting also work, people are drawn to this new technique because of how gentle it is and does not involve any twisting, especially in the neck. Many people like getting adjusted with traditional manual techniques, all of which are safe and effective. But there are a large number of people who never get to experience the amazing benefits of chiropractic because they are scared to have their spines adjusted in that way,” says Dr. Yani. Now, there is no longer a reason to be wary. This technology is perfect for anyone who has been thinking about going to a chiropractor, but hasn’t yet made that decision. Dr. Yani wants everyone to be able to experience these same benefits and if you have nerve interference causing any of the following conditions, the Ultralign may be the answer you’ve been looking for... • Neck & Shoulder pain • Poor Circulation • Low back pain • Sciatic pain • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome • Arthritis • Headaches • High Cholesterol • TMJ Problems • Fibromyalgia • Scoliosis • High Blood Pressure • Sports Injuries • Planter Fascitis • Knee or hip pain • Diabetes Computer guided treatment is consistent, measurable and extremely gentle. Call Isabel at our office today and mention this article to receive a FREE analysis to pin-point your problem areas and to see how we can help. You will also receive an examination that can show the areas of your stress and how it’s affecting your body for only $89 (reg. $250). If you are not completely delighted with the services, you pay nothing! This technological marvel can help you return to a healthier lifestyle. You may no longer have to live with a persistent, painful condition. Call (562) 698-1275 today! “I thought I’d never play golf again! I had severe disc displacement. I had spasms and electric shocks going into my body. I was barley able to move or even turn over in bed. I was completely immobile for 4-5 days at a time. I would have to put my hands on my knees and walk myself up my legs in order just to stand up. I was in a downward spiral with limited choices in life. I had been to many chiropractors without any real results. The ProAdjuster is amazing! It has changed everything! Now I golf 2-3 times every week and I’m walking the course not riding in a cart. The ProAdjuster is the BEST! It’s FANTASTIC!” ~ Norm DeVilbiss

Being a Whittier Chamber member for over 10 years has provided me enormous opportunities to get to know my community of businesses and nonprofits in the Whittier area. I attended a Wake Up Whittier networking breakfast as a guest nearly 11 years ago by invitation from a fellow member. I had participated in a number of networking groups over the prior 20 years with some success. Once I joined the Whittier Chamber, I was asked to promote my great dental services at a Wake Up Whittier. I made a few props to make it memorable. Some of you may remember my face in a large cut out tooth with candy and soda cans stuck to a large decaying tooth. Members came up to me afterward asking for my card and finding the promotion quite entertaining. Ever since that day, I find it a pleasure to join our growing Chamber membership at many events not just promoting my comprehensive dental services, John K. Sudick, DDS at WhittierDentalOffice. com but also mentoring new businesses and nonprofits to help them succeed. Remember, our Chamber smiles make a difference when shared across our community.
