CHARLIE FINK ANNENICHOLAS'83 ENDOWEDSCHOLARSHIP Charlie's engagement with Whittier College deepened thanks to his late wife Anne Nicholas '83 who was a proud Poet mentoring young professionals and par ticipating in Whittier recruitment and send-off events for incoming first-year students. Himself a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University, Charlie came to appreciate Whittier as a place that offers not only an excellent education but one that also deeply cares about the individual student and their needs and ambitions. In memory of his beloved Anne, he created a need-based endowed scholarship to suppor t students wishing to pursue a career in political science or public affairs. Based in Washington D.C., Charlie serves as Chief Technologist at Réper toire International de Littér ature Musicale (RILM), a non-profit organization committed to documenting the world's knowledge about all musical traditions, and to making this knowledge accessible to research and performance communities worldwide via digital collections and advanced tools. He is also a Senior Software Engineering Consultant in the Fellowships Office of the National Academies of Science and serves on the city council in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland.

HAROLD ALLEN '84 BLACKALUMNI ASSOCIATIONSUPPORTFUND A current member of the Whittier College Board of Trustees, Harold is the principal owner of Harold Allen Insurance Services which provides a wide variety of insurance coverages for personal and commercial purposes, as well as wealth transfer and asset protection services. He is also an account manager at Orkin Pest Control. Harold is an enthusiastic suppor ter of Whittier Athletics. He currently serves as chair of the Purple & Gold Hall of Fame committee and regularly attends the annual Purple & Gold Golf Tournament. He is also a member of the Sachsen Society. Most recently, Harold co-founded the new Whittier College Black Alumni Association to help current Black students succeed and graduate from Whittier. The group is actively raising funds for scholarships to make college more affordable and help break down barriers to education. Allen has a bachelor's degree in political science from Whittier College. Originally from San Diego, he and his wife, Allyson, currently reside in Los Angeles, California.

NAILAH BEYENE-MARTIN '22 ANNENBERGFOUNDATIONIMPACTSCHOLARSHIP Scot t 2020 Fund Pit t s Famil y Foundat ion St udy Abr oad Fel l ow ship JOHNGREENLEAFWHITTIERMERITSCHOLARSHIP An East Coast native, Nailah chose Whittier College because of its strong sense of community and the oppor tunities it provides students to grow and thrive as individuals, leaders, and members of a diverse community. She is currently finishing her junior year and has decided to major in psychology. She has been recognized for her academic leadership and achievements, receiving the Pitts Family Foundation Study Abroad Fellowship during the 2020 academic year and has made the Dean's List multiple years. Nailah dedicates her time to excelling in her studies and is an active student on campus. She is an event coordinator for the Black Student Association, an event intern for the Office of Admissions, and acts as a Co-Leader for Delight Ministries. Nailah has also been asked to speak at leadership meetings, addressing Trustees, President Oubre and many others on impor tant issues surrounding student life and academic success.

HOCKETTENDOWEDSCHOLARSHIP VIVIANSCHULTEGARDNER'54 ENDOWEDSCHOLARSHIP A Santa Clarita native, Angie knew she wanted to stay close to home while attending college. She chose Whittier because of its vibrant campus and the high quality Liberal Ar ts education we offer. Angie is proud to be the first in her family to attend college and will be completing her freshman year this May. While majoring in psychology, she has also focused on two additional passions, music and Chinese, minoring in both. She spends her time perfecting the ar t as a mallet percussionist and has enjoyed taking snare lessons and par ticipating in the handbell ensemble with Dr. LaVelle. She works as a student intern in the Office of Development, learning the impor tant work of philanthropy, donor relations, and the impact our donors have on students, faculty, and the Whittier campus as a whole. She has played a tremendous role in connecting her fellow students with the donor relations depar tment, gathering information on each student to help build impactful fund repor ts. Hayter '08 by his father, the late William G. Hayter, through a charitable gift annuity. It will benefit Whittier College undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need. First award in the 2020/2021 academic year. Chr i stopher C. Evans '68 Endowed Schol ar shi p Established in 2019, this endowed scholarship benefits Whittier College undergraduate students who are from the Pacific Nor thwest region, with preference given to students who have a demonstrated financial need. The scholarship was created in honor of Chris Evans '68 by his long-time friend and Whittier College trustee emer tius Raymond 'Buck' Ferguson '67 and Chris' sister, Elisabeth Evans, M.D. First award in the 2020/2021 academic year. M etaphoni an Soci ety Endowed Schol ar shi p This scholarship is in memory of Miss Karen Pilkington and Miss Dee Hochstetler, who tragically passed away while still in college (1979 and 1995, respectively). Both misses were very dear to their families and friends, and the scholarship honors their memory and celebrates Met sisterhood, going strong since 1924. First award in the 2020/2021 academic year. Thal i an Soci ety Endowed Schol ar shi p Established thanks to leadership and generous suppor t of Kristin Dillon '73 and other dedicated alumnae of the Thalian Society, this scholarship is for students who are members of the Thalian Society. Anne Ni chol as '83 Endowed Schol ar shi p The Anne Nicholas '83 Endowed Scholarship was established in 2021 by Anne's loving husband Charlie Fink. In memory of Anne, this scholarship suppor ts undergraduate students who have an unmet financial need and wish to pursue a career in political science or public affairs. First award anticipated in 2022/2023 academic year. Dr. Par vi n M i r bod M em or i al Endowed Schol ar shi p Established in 2021 by Dr. Iraj Isaac Rahmim and his sister Dr. Arezoo Rahmim in memory of their beloved mother. Dr. Parvin Mirbod was an accomplished doctor, researcher, and academic. This scholarship benefits Whittier College juniors and seniors who wish to pursue medicine, have a minimum 3.5 GPA, and exhibit strong co-curricular leadership (exemplary community service, campus service, and/or research).Preference will be given to first generation college students. First award anticipated in the 2022/2023 academic year.

NAMEDANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS The Wonder Wom en Schol ar shi p Established in 2019 by John L. and Laurie W. Peel '84 MA'86 P'10 '14, this scholarship celebrates the long legacy of women in their families to attend Whittier College. This scholarship will suppor t the newest generation of remarkable Poets with preference for students who: are female, are entering their senior year, are in good academic standing, have at least a 3.7 GPA, and have an unmet financial need of $10,000, or more. The Dr eam Bi g Schol ar shi p for the Non-Tr adi ti onal Student i n M em or y of Dr. Hi l da F. Rosene Lund Established in 2020 by Mrs. Merrilee Beazley in honor of her great aunt, Dr. Hilda F. Rosene Lund. Dr. Rosene Lund was a plant physiologist and was one of two women to hold a tenure track position in the natural sciences at the University of Texas, Austin from the late 1930s to the 1950s. This scholarship is intended to inspire students to 'dream big,' just as Dr. Rosene Lund did, and suppor ts non-traditional biology students with unmet financial need. Annenber g Foundati on I m pact Schol ar shi p This grant will suppor t need-based scholarships for Black students. By providing these scholarships, the aim is to help increase retention and graduation rates of Black students who currently constitute 5% of the student body at Whittier. Bl ack Al um ni Associ ati on Suppor t Fund Established in 2020, the purpose of the Black Alumni Association Suppor t fund is to contribute to the development of current and future Black students at Whittier College, through various campus programming and student suppor t initiatives. Scott 2020 Fund In December 2020, Whittier College received a generous $12M gift from author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. Pursuant to our commitment to student success, $6M has been earmarked for scholarships over the next 6 years.

NEW GENERAL SCHOLARSHIPFUNDS Whittier is committed to ensuring that access to higher education is matched by affordability. In addition to the Whittier Fund, the following newly established funds are suppor ted annually by alumni, parents, and friends of the College and help reduce barriers to education, allowing Whittier students to thrive: Student Loan Rel i ef Schol ar shi p Whittier College seniors who have achieved at least a 3.70 GPA are eligible to receive a Student Loan Relief Scholarship. Applied directly to a student's account to reduce their senior year federal student loan debt amount, the scholarship awards a minimum of $500. Poet For war d Schol ar shi p Unmet financial need, the gap in funding that remains after a student's initial financial aid award is determined, is often a deciding factor in whether a student can pursue a higher education or not. Unfor tunately, 85% of Whittier students face unmet need ranging from $2,000 to $25,000. The Poet Forward Scholarship closes this gap and makes enrollment and retention at Whittier possible without additional loans. Poet Educator Schol ar shi p Created to suppor t aspiring educators enrolled in the College's highly-respected Master of Ar ts in Education program, the Poet Educator Scholarship reduces out-of-pocket costs. For decades, the program has prepared teachers and administrators to meet the diverse learning, cultural, and linguistic needs of K-12 students in Greater Los Angeles, Orange County, and the State of California.

ENDOWED PROFESSORSHIPS Endowed professorships lend distinction and strength to the Whittier College faculty. These named chair positions are bestowed upon faculty whose research, teaching and/or public service have uniquely contributed to the mission of their depar tment and the College. In addition to the academic honor, the endowed professorship provides funding for the faculty member?s salary, research, and professional development oppor tunities. The Roy E. and M ar i e G. Cam pbel l Di sti ngui shed Chai r i n Bi ol ogy Dr. Roy E. Campbell, director of the U.S. Entomological Laboratory, provided for the endowment of a chair in biology from the proceeds of his estate. The Campbell Chair suppor ts a distinguished faculty member in that depar tment, and assists the College in enriching teaching and research activities. The C. M i l o Conni ck Chai r i n Rel i gi on Named in honor of the late Dr. C. Milo Connick, professor emeritus of religion and college trustee, this endowed chair provides funds for suppor t of distinguished faculty in the field of religious studies. The Genevi eve Shaul Conni ck Chai r i n Rel i gi on Named in memory of Genevieve Shaul Connick, wife of Dr. Milo C. Connick, professor emeritus of religion and college trustee, this endowed chair provides suppor t for a faculty member in religious studies. Funding for the chair was provided by the estate of Dr. C. Milo Connick with matching funds from Whittier College. The Ri char d and Bi l l i e Dei hl Di sti ngui shed Chai r Richard Deihl ?49 and his wife Billie (Beane) Deihl ?50, both alumni, established this endowed chair in 1993 to provide funds for suppor t of a distinguished scholar. A prominent executive in the financial services industry, Richard served on the Whittier College Board of Trustees from 1970-1982 and from 1992-2002, and was named Trustee Emeritus in 2006. The Dougl as W. Fer guson Chai r i n Econom i cs and Busi ness Adm i ni str ati on Named in honor of Douglas W. Ferguson, long-time member of the Whittier College Board of Trustees, the chair was endowed at the time of his retirement as Chief Executive Officer, Quaker City Federal Savings and Loan. The endowed chair provides funds for suppor t of a distinguished faculty member in the field of international economics. The Jam es I r vi ne Foundati on Chai r i n the Bi ol ogi cal Sci ences Established through the generosity of the James Irvine Foundation, this endowed chair provides for the suppor t of a faculty member in the field of biological sciences, who has distinguished him/ herself as an instructor, researcher and author. The Fl etcher Jones Chai r i n M ol ecul ar Bi ol ogy or Geneti cs The funding for the Fletcher Jones endowed chair was generously provided through the Fletcher Jones Foundation. This Endowment provides funds for suppor t of a distinguished faculty member in the field of molecular biology or genetics. The Hazel Cooper Jor dan Chai r i n Ar ts and Hum ani ti es The Hazel Cooper Jordan Chair in Ar ts and Humanities was established in 2007 with a gift from Dr. Chester ?Chet? McCloskey ?40, and his wife, Olive (Jordan) McCloskey ?44, in memory of Olive?s mother, an alumna in the Class of 1912. Its purpose is to maintain and enhance Whittier College?s contribution to the languages and the humanities. The Chester and Ol i ve M cCl osk ey Chai r i n Chem i str y This fund was established in 2007 by Dr. Chester ?Chet? M. McCloskey ?40 and Olive (Jordan) McCloskey ?40 to suppor t the teaching, research, and services of an outstanding professor of chemistry who embodies inspirational and dedicated teaching in the sciences. The John M ur dy Chai r i n Busi ness and Econom i cs Funded by the Murdy Foundation and Trustee Emerita Maxine Murdy Trotter ?47, the John A. Murdy Chair in Business and Economics is named in honor of Mrs. Trotter?s father, former state senator John A. Murdy, Jr. and her brother John A Murdy III, a member of the Class of 1950 and a former college trustee. The Chair provides suppor t for a faculty member in the depar tments of business or economics.

The W. Roy and Al i ce Newsom Chai r i n Chem i str y Named in honor of the late Roy Newsom, tenth President of Whittier College, and his wife Alice. The Newsom Chair provides suppor t for an outstanding scholar/ teacher in chemistry. W. Roy Newsom was a leader at Whittier College for for ty years: 1934 graduate, Professor of Chemistry and depar tment chair, Dean of the College, Vice President for Administration, and President of the College. The Al ber t Upton Chai r i n Engl i sh Language and Li ter atur e The Alber t Upton Chair in English Language and Literature commemorates the director of Whittier?s earlier liberal education curriculum, the General Studies Program, and the designer of a semantically oriented freshman English course, Design for Thinking. The holder of the Upton Chair is committed to the teaching of writing and plays an impor tant role in the College?s writing program. The Nadi ne Austi n Wood Chai r i n Am er i can Hi stor y Named in honor of Nadine Wood, the late wife of Donald ?Bill? Wood L.H.D. ?98, trustee and college treasurer, this endowed chair provides suppor t for a faculty member in American History. Nadine was active in community organizations, par ticularly the Whittier Historical Society, and the Friends of the Shannon Center. Bill has been a college trustee since 1975. C. Wr i ght M i l l s Chai r i n Soci ol ogy This endowed professorship was made possible through the generosity of the late Professor Emeritus Les Howard ?62. Howard?s desire was that the Chair would apply sociological theory to practice within a local or international community; promote social justice, especially for the disenfranchised; and use the resources of the appointment for student-centered activities. Yao Yuan Sze Chai r i n K i nesi ol ogy Established in 2015 through the generous suppor t of the Yao Yuan Sze Foundation of Bellevue, WA. Before his death in 2013, Yao Yuan Sze? a successful businessman, aerospace engineer, and philanthropist? came to appreciate Whittier College and its positive impact on students.
