LETTER FROM PUBLISHER/ /16

In Southern California, the winter holidays are truly holy days — a time to take a break from your routine, to relax and reflect, to worship our glorious weather and come together with family and friends. That’s why West Hollywood Magazine has decided to focus this issue on the holidays (and the months that follow). Los Angeles will be full of fun events. However we’ve decided to call out a few special ones sponsored by the City of West Hollywood that acknowledge the wonderful diversity of our community. We also want to give a nod to West Hollywood’s cosmopolitan vibe, evident in the many restaurants focused on different national cuisines — an amazing collection in a city of only 1.9 square miles. This holiday season, consider a dining tour that you can take without ever boarding a plane. Finally, knowing that choosing the right gift is never easy, we decided to provide some help, enlisting some of West Hollywood’s most stylish residents to provide suggestions. Having endured the political maelstrom of 2016, many of us already are focused on the new year. So we have wrapped up this issue with a story about getting yourself in (physical) shape, along with a humorous look at the male makeup trend that you might start seeing on this city’s streets.

We hope you enjoy our holiday guide. But even more, we hope you take the time to relax, to bond with friends, and to focus on the basic joy of life.

THIS YULETIDE DESIGNER PUTS GLITTER ON THE TREES OF HOLLYWOOD STARS

DR. CHRISTMAS

Jolly V ibes

Got the holiday blues? Dr. Christmas has the cure for what ails you: perfect style and jolly vibes via decor. The West Hollywood-based Yuletide designer is a favorite among celebrities, embellishing their homes and offices with gorgeous and festive colorscapes and atmosphere, and upping their tree game too. He’s been doing it for years. Decades in fact. Dr. Christmas, whose real name is Bob Pranga, and his partner Debi Staron, are at the top in their field, with clients such as Billy Bob Thornton, Christina Aguilera, Mark Walberg and Heidi Klum.

Written by Lina Lecaro

PERFECT STYLE/

So how does one become “the tree stylist to the stars”? “It was really just an accident,” says Pranga, who got his start at the age of 21. “I didn’t wake up one day and say I want to be a tree decorator. I went to New York to be an actor, and between gigs I worked at Macy’s in the Christmas department. One day actress Mia Farrow walked into the store and said, ‘Gee I wish somebody could do that in my home.’ I said, “I can come help you’.” The rest is tinsel-covered history, though Pranga’s career didn’t really start to shine until he moved to the capital of excess, Tinsel Town itself. In L.A., he met Kathy Hilton (Paris’s mom), and she introduced him to “a whole new world of people,” he said. “Kathy basically pulled me aside and said if you want to make it in this town, watch me. It was a fascinating boot camp of L.A. life. She took me under her wing.” “I was calling myself, ‘the Christmas guy,’ Pranga recalled. “ Then one of my clients asked, ‘When do you work?’ and I said ‘24 hours a day.’ She joked that I’m the doctor of Christmas time.” The name stuck. In addition to Kathy Hilton, Pranga cites life coach Rick Tamlyn as an inspiration and motivator who helped him find his unique niche, work-wise. “I was still working three jobs, hating my life, and he took me aside and said ‘Why don’t you live your life like a game?’” Pranga said. “That resonated with me.” Dr. Christmas soon realized that to hit a home run professionally, exposure was key. “I needed to be on TV, so I started calling all the television studios,” he said. “One day I called Leeza Gibbons (who had a talk show at the time), and the secretary thought I was a real doctor, so she put me right through. The next thing I know I’m talking to Leeza, telling her about what I do and that I’d like to be on her show. And she said OK.”

/21

/22

“ I DIDN’T WANT CHRISTMAS TO BE OVER.” / Things snowballed from there. The Doctor did the “Leeza” show, then “Extra” called, then others. An appearance on the “Anna Nicole” show led to a publishing deal for a coffee table book, Christmas Style, featuring Pranga and Staron’s colorful, outlandish, and diverse decorating work and tips on how readers can achieve the same.

“ THE TREE STYLIST TO THE STARS”?

Pranga said that for the most part, stars like stuff that reminds them of their childhoods. He has noticed how the zeitgeist affects holiday trends, though. “I always say when the Republicans are in the White House, things get more traditional, and when the Democrats are in the White House, people get more wild with colors and things.” So can you expect grandma’s Christmas quilts and popcorn garlands to make a comeback this year? If they do, it probably won’t happen in trendy West Hollywood, which the Doctor has called home since 1990. “I love it here. It’s one those communities where you get to know everyone,” he said. “I feel like the unofficial Mayor sometimes. I live in a glorious rent controlled apartment, and I can’t imagine living anywhere else.” Of course, Pranga will never have a white Christmas here, but that’s ok by him. “If I’m lucky I have enough time to decorate in my own house!” he said. “It’s a challenge, but I always do because it’s important. There’s nothing more depressing than waking up Christmas morning to nothing.”

Gifts

Beautiful clothes make a beautiful gift. However, beauty, as we know, is in the eye of the beholder. This writer finally asked his mother to stop sending him clothes for Christmas after he realized that she saw beige as white, didn’t get the idea of “slim fit” for slacks and didn’t understand that he really isn’t a Hawaiian shirt kind of guy. But maybe there is a way to let your significant other know what you’d like to see under that Christmas tree on December 25. Consider leaving a copy of GQ or Vogue open to an ad for the apparel you love on your lover’s pillow. Or maybe there’s an “accidental” email to him or her that contains a link to what you’d like Santa to deliver. It’s also possible that you don’t really know what you’d like. So we decided to reach out to some stylish local folks to find out what they’d like to see under the tree. They just might inspire you!

JAMIE ADLER

Jamie Adler with her husband Jonathan runs Phyllis Morris Originals, an iconic furniture store founded by and named for her mother. Style is Adler’s profession as well as an obvious personal interest. Adler recommended some “on trend” accessory items. “I think buying, giving or getting apparel as a gift after the age of six is usually a disaster,” she said. “So it was hard even hypothetically to think of what I would want. You can never go wrong with accessories though!”

“A set of the fluorescent heels of Tanya Heath,

whose new boutique is on South Robertson. I have several of her shoes and boots, and they all have removable and interchangeable heels which is nothing short of genius.” Tanya Health is at 132 Robertson Boulevard. And what about a striped cashmere throw from Elder Statesman? (It’s at 607 Huntley Drive). “The nice thing is this can double as a cozy throw to cuddle up with or be a fun and dramatic wrap for cool evenings,” Adler said. “I have noticed half of the Elder Statesman blankets have gone “missing” from the Soho House theater and I know why (although it is hard to believe people would have the nerve to wear them out, but I heard that is the case).”

Another idea is a vintage Chanel cuff.

“Actualnlybtewttoer one for be eve Adler said. each wrist"

Finally there’s the “new super cute” cross body bag from Philip Lim. “Any color!” Philip Lim is at 631 Robertson Boulevard, quite close to Phyllis Morris Originals. /31

JOHN D’AMICO/ John D’Amico is a member of West Hollywood’s City Council and a man with a passion for

design. “Holiday gifts take a back seat to end of year donations at our house,” D’Amico said, noting that he and his husband, Keith Rand, “sit down at the end of the year and decide how to donate our gift money together.” That said, D’Amico did put four things forward “just in case Santa Keith has me on his ‘nice’ list.” His choices:

1

“Becuase peace...and patriotism belong together" – the Peace Flag tee shirt from John Varvatos, 8800 Melrose Avenue

2

“Because (it ‘s) Ringo."

– the mohair S. Ringo-Paul suit from SAND at Sunset Plaza, 8620 Sunset Boulevard.

3

“Becuase slim classic white shirts are always in style"

– the slim stretch Armani Exchange shirt, available at Armani Exchange at Sunset Plaza, 8700 Sunset Boulevard.

4

“And finally, because “fit” happens” – the Champion’s men’s printed circuit shorts from Target at the Gateway at the southeast intersection at La Brea Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard.

/33

KAREN KUO/

Another of West Hollywood’s most stylish women is Karen Kuo, a manager of the eponymous design business of her father, Robert Kuo. Kuo’s sense of style was called out in a recent issue of Introspective magazine, which focused on an exhibit in New York City called “Robert Kuo Selects: Los Angeles Studio Made, Found and Represented Artists,” which was Karen Kuo’s idea.

” ! d l r o w e h t n i n o i t s e u q t s e i s a “ E What apparel would she like to see under the Christmas tree?

On her Christmas list is the James Perse Lounge Wear line of tee shirts and tank tops. They range from the suede Jersey crew tank to the long sleeve stripe tee to the Melange polo tee. Take a look at the James Perse shop at 8914 Melrose Avenue.

/34

For a stylish but less formal evening, Kuo would consider a Carolina Herrera cocktail dress. You can check out various options at the Herrera boutique and bridal shop at 9515 Wilshire Boulevard.

For a formal night out? Kuo loves the Alberta Ferretti long evening dress. “Unexpected elegance” is how Alberta Ferretti describes the collection of evening dresses. The shop is at 8626 Melrose Avenue. Sometimes what you need is the practical. But practical can come with style. That’s the case with the Phillip Lim car coat. Jamie Garcia can help you choose at the Phillip Lim shop at 631 Robertson Boulevard. If you want some special attention, tell them that Karen Kuo inspired you!

Finally Kuo offers on her list some very hip fashion. That’s the Veda short leather jacket. Go to thisisveda.com to shop.

RYAN FARBER/

In West Hollywood Mr. Fashion is Ryan Farber, who heads the city’s Design District. Who better to consult for inspiration for a guy? One of Farber’s likes is the Picasso Sweater from The Elder Statesman at 607 Huntley Drive. “One of the coolest stores in the West Hollywood Design District, The Elder Statesman is known the world over for its cashmere offerings,” Farber said. “They aren’t super trendy, rather, what they make is about quality, craftsmanship and imagination.

And I’ve never owned a cashmere sweater… might as well start with the best!”

While you’re likely to see Farber at official events in a sport coat, at least, he definitely has a hipster vibe if you see him out and about. After a while you’ll notice that he wears jeans all the time. Perhaps that’s why he recommends the Chuck Taylor Painted Canvas High-Top from John Varvatos at 8800 Melrose Avenue. “I’m always on the lookout for Chuck’s,” he said. “These painted canvas high-tops are a perfect gowith-everything shoe with a unique style that screams Varvatos.” /36

Raw Denim Jeans in 24 Dip Indigo Grey from DSTLD is another Farber choice. He notes: “I wear jeans all of the time,” albeit quite stylish ones. “DSTLD makes great quality jeans at a very reasonable price by cutting out the middlemen. You can only order online, but their creative studio in the West Hollywood Design District is doing a Pop-Up for the holidays. DSTLD’s private showroom, which features some amazing sculpture made of denim, is at 8800 Melrose Avenue. However, to shop, take a look online at dstld.com

“ I wear jeans all the time,” Finally, Farber recommends some sunglasses, an essential item in sunny Southern California. His fav? The 1228 Black from Cutler & Gross, 8505 Melrose Avenues. “I love aviator sunglasses,” Farber said. “Cutler & Gross handcrafts the 1228 and gives the aviator a cool twist. Visiting the store is so fun. There are hundreds of styles to try on and the back room has a vintage collection.”

A TISKET, A TASKET, LET’S TRY A HOLIDAY BASKET/

Let’s face it, shopping for a holiday gift isn’t easy. Will he really like that slender necktie from Versace? (After all, his job doesn’t require him to wear one.) Will she love that Marc Jacobs Decadence, with a fragrance so intense it’s likely to seduce (or maybe revolt) those folks two rows forward at the Arclight? Certainly a gift card is a safe bet. But it isn’t very personal. A more delicious (or romantic) choice? A holiday gift basket, with options in West Hollywood for pretty much every taste.

If it’s a gift for a co-worker, consider Gelson’s $27.99 Hostess Coffee Bag gift basket, which includes Gelson’s Ground French Roasted Coffee, a Gelson’s coffee mug and Kelley’s Kookies Shortbread. Likely a good choice for that guy or gal at the next desk who downs multiple cups of coffee a day. Gelsons is at 8330 Santa Monica Boulevard.

WOULDN’T YOU LIKE TO TAKE A HOLIDAY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON— MAYBE JET OFF TO PARIS, OR DOWN TO OAXACA, OR FAR EAST TO INDIA, OR CHINA, OR KOREA?

TAKE A DINING HOLIDAY WITHOUT LEAVING TOWN

Dine in

We H O

Well, you may not have the time or the resources to travel, but one of the joys of a small but cosmopolitan city like West Hollywood is that when you sit down to dinner, you can experience other parts of the world without ever leaving town. cuisine in WeHo. You have to think twice before traveling these days: long security lines, uncomfortable airline seats in on overbooked flights, and a sometimes-dicey world beyond your own neighborhood. But if you’re lucky enough to be in West Hollywood, you can dine around the world without jet lag or having your shoes x-rayed.

When considering SoCal cuisine, one thinks first of the influences from our neighbors to the South, and we definitely have great Mexican food and lots of it. However, Tortilla Republic (616 N. Robertson Boulevard) is not to be missed. Tucked away off Santa Monica Boulevard, and just far enough away from the incessant thrum of The Abbey bar, Tortilla Republic takes the typical darkcantina-rice-and-beans joint that we all grew up with and upgrades it to a chic and vibrant tequila bar and eatery that wouldn’t be out of place in Mexico City.

Every city has Italian food, but not every city has a star-studded ristorante like Madeo (8897 Beverly Boulevard), which, on any given night, can be like dinner at the Golden Globes. It’s not what I’d call inexpensive, but for star watchers,

Not far away—just up the hill from Madeo—is a new addition, the New York import Serafina Sunset (8768 Sunset Boulevard), ready for its close-up with a crisp whiteout design, Warhol prints on the walls and a celeb owner in former Spice Girl Mel B. With its tattoo of thumping Euro-lounge music and tablehopping from industry types, Serafina isn’t exactly like a restaurant one would find on a Roman side street off the Piazza Navona, but what it lacks in immersion it gives back in a great selection of salads, pastas and authentic pizzas. Go simple with a Margherita Fior di Latte with its elegant, ultra-thin crust and San Marzano tomatoes given room to show off their tangy fruit. Finish with chocolate or hazelnut gelato and a glass of limoncello di Capri.

4 Rather than having to travel out of Italy and into France, you can simply drive a mile across WeHo to Maison Richard (707 North Stanley Avenue) and suddenly you’re on the rose-filled patio of an Alsatian patisserie, tipping back a glass of Riesling between bites of Quiche Lorraine and strawberry Napoleon.

5

Would you prefer lunch in Paris? There’s no TGV bullet train required. Just drive a mile west to the venerable Le Petit Bistro (631 North La Cienega Boulevard), serving escargot and onion soup gratinée since 1993. With café tables, rattan chairs, and French lounge music whispering down from the rafters, this cozy eatery transports you to a Rive Gauche bistro where you swear you can hear the bells of Notre Dame.

6

When you finally do make it to the actual City of Lights, the trip across France and over the Pyrenees to Spain will be beautiful, but until then, you can do it the easy way and head down Melrose to Smoke.Oil.Salt. (7274 Melrose Avenue) for your tapas fix. Start with Patatas Bravas, crispy fried potatoes with serrano ham, brava sauce, aioli and a sunny-side up egg. Pair it with Albondigas al Horno, chorizo and beef meatballs with Idiazabal cheese, tomatoes and herbs or the Pez De Cola Amarilla, a citrus pimentóncured yellowtail topped with a lemon soy emulsion and served with puffed rice.

7

If you were actually in Spain, going south could take you through Seville, through Cadiz, through the strait of Gibraltar, and into Morocco, but going south from Smoke.Oil.Salt. will only take you to Inglewood. But buck up, you can always let Pi on Sunset (8828 Sunset Boulevard) serve as your gateway to the Middle East. Just follow the sweet scent of cherry tobacco as tendrils of smoke from their al fresco hookah lounge beguiles you into crispy falafel or a platter of pita, hummus, salad and Beef Shawarma.

8

If you have a craving for a bowl of good matzo ball soup for lunch the day after your Arabian night, you need not traverse the great expanse of Egypt to make it to Israel before the noontime rush. Instead, simply cross town and slide up to an exemplary bowl of “Jewish penicillin” at Greenblatt’s Deli (8017 Sunset Boulevard).

/44

9

Were you to continue eastward on your food tour of the globe, a daunting string of connecting flights would be in your future. Not to worry; West Hollywood has you covered. You can abandon the Silk Road to the East by taking the high road through Russia by way of Traktir (8151 Santa Monica Boulevard) where you can take a vodka shot like a real Muscovite. Ready? Breathe out, take the shot in one large gulp, sniff the black bread and then quickly eat a slice of pickled cucumber. Now dig into a plate of creamy Mushroom and Sauerkraut Vareniki and a pressed Cornish game hen in garlic wine sauce called Chicken Tabaka, all served while you watch the world go by on an expansive patio, absent the subzero weather.

10

Without having to pack, you’ll head through India by way of Flavor of India (9045 Santa Monica Boulevard) where the Singh brothers have been spicing curries just right for almost 20 years. Find rustic charm in the dining room and comfort in the Chicken Tikka Masala, or meet your endorphins headon with a Lamb Vindaloo before heading deep into Asia.

11

There are no messy visas required to visit China in West Hollywood. Just head to Kung Pao Bistro (7853 Santa Monica Boulevard) for a plate of their gut-busting Hawker Style Fried Noodles, tossed with shrimp, barbecued pork, sweet soy, chili, bean sprouts, scallions, fried garlic, crispy shallots, and a fried egg on top.

/45

12

Were you actually clocking some air miles on this trip around the world, you might be compelled to stop in Thailand for some real Thai cuisine under the assumption that all West Hollywood could offer you was the same old pad Thai and satay. Night + Market (9043 Sunset Boulevard) would beg to differ. There’s no ear-popping descent required to eat like the ancient Siamese at this place, only a sense of adventure. Start with a gin len (snack) of Fried Pig Tail or a Catfish Tamale before further feathering your cap with a Golden Triangle, a mortadella-like fried pancake of shrimp and whipped pork fat topped with fried Chinese broccoli and served with sweet plum sauce.

13

Meanwhile, on Restaurant Row (far more convenient than a trip to the Korean Peninsula) they’re lighting the grill in the center of your table at Genwa (170 North La Cienega Boulevard). In your food-induced stupor, you can hardly believe your eyes when you arrive to find plates of tender grilling meat and surely, it can’t be twenty banchan (side dishes) included with your dinner. No, you were right. There aren’t twenty. Actually, there are twenty-three. After all, an even number of banchan is considered bad luck in Korea. Eggbattered ham, chilled glass noodles with krab, pickled perilla leaves, tiny anchovies, and all manner of kimchi surround you in little bowls as tendrils of charring rib eye give you your second wind. /46

Japan at the quaint Aburiya Raku (521 North La Cienega Boulevard), which means—in the awkward but loveable way that Japanese translates literally to English—”Charcoal Grill House Enjoyment.” It’s been a long journey, so why not end with a sexy Steamed Foie Gras Egg Custard? Grab the circulating chalkboards for some daily sashimi specials and end with some of the best Yakitori skewers in Southern California like Kobe beef filet, Kurobuta pork cheek and duck with balsamic soy sauce.

consider that in a divided world, food is a way to understand, connect and show love for one another. Why not go with that rationale at least until the New Year’s resolutions kick in?

from the feet up, dripping with highlighter. Makeup is making global headlines lately, and those headlines aren’t centered on Kylie Jenner or Gigi Hadid (for once). Instead they are focused on men known for their makeup.

Major brands are taking notice of the trend and joining forces with some of the most popular beauty bloggers and YouTubers. CoverGirl recently signed its first-ever male influencer, 17-year-old James Charles. Charles’ unique makeup artistry got the attention of this heavy-hitter brand through his Instagram account (@jamescharles) and online presence.

Benefit Cosmetics uses influencers like Manny MUA and Patrick Starrr for its national campaigns now that celebrity endorsements are becoming a thing of the past and beauty blogger endorsements are hot. Manny MUA also collaborated with Makeup Geek Cosmetics to create the Manny MUA eye shadow palette, a huge success for the brand. And let’s not forget about the businessmen running successful makeup lines, like Jeffree Star, CEO of Jeffree Star Cosmetics, and Jerrod Blandino, co-founder and chief creative officer of Too Faced Cosmetics. There isn’t a makeup guru who doesn’t have one of their products in his or her drawer or on his or her wish list.

There also is an emerging scene of young talent. Two local notables are Jose Martinez and Hosway Morbak.

Meet Jose Martinez, also known as @glit_glam on Instagram. A Southern Californian, he’s a celebrity

hair and makeup artist who you’ve probably seen on E!’s Total Divas since he is WWE star Natalie Eva Marie’s one-man glam squad. With 150,000 Instagram followers, Martinez has captivated his fans with his “getting it” attitude and razor-sharp contouring skills. “I’ve always been into glam and beauty-related content but didn’t start wearing makeup until after high school,” Martinez said. “When I was in high school, I had beautiful skin to the point where people thought I wore makeup. After high school, I started breaking out and started wearing makeup to cover blemishes, and that’s where it all started.” Martinez has crashed through barriers in his career because of his gifts and his genuine love for beauty. “By being in the beauty industry, I have grown through teaching myself to have tough skin, which has made me more confident,” he said. “When I was younger and faced a challenge, I would be scared and run away, but as I’ve grown, I’ve learned that a scary feeling is a good thing, so I run right into it and knock down as many walls as I need to.”

With the exception of a few stares here and there, Martinez

have not had very many challenges; partly because I have very thick skin and do not care what people have say,” Martinez said. “The beauty industry is a cut-throat industry, and finding out there are many genuine and supportive amazing makeup artists is what has most surprised me.” For Martinez, makeup is home, and he could not be more excited for the recent spotlight men have had in makeup. “Congratulations to James Charles on being the first male CoverGirl, this is so groundbreaking! I love how far and how much we’ve advanced as male makeup artists,” he said. Martinez says his parents are his biggest inspiration. “They are hard working, relentless and go for their dreams. I also really look up to Mario Dedivanovic. He is incredibly talented. I love all that he has accomplished in his career.”

He is only 23, but Hosway Morbak (@GlamourByHosway) already is a beauty educator and influencer with 141,000 followers on Instagram. His reach and interactions make him one of the busiest men in makeup on Instagram. “I actually started doing hair and picked up makeup later in life,” Morbak said. “I remember trying out all the lip shades on myself, and the rest is history!” A freelance makeup artist, Morbak created a successful brand for himself by educating others on his craft through master classes across the nation. “Being business-minded has taken my career to another level,” he said. “I’m able to fly my entire team around the country without any investors. It all had to do with my mentality. I started as a freelance makeup artist, so when I joined Instagram I looked at it as another business venture and not just a hobby. Beauty education and social media are my full time jobs.” From 65 to 100 people attend Morbak’s master makeup seminars (his recent Los Angeles class had 120 attendees.) Each student receives a hefty swag bag featuring products from the approximately 30 brands Morbak works with at any one time. Creating the sponsored goodie bag alone would be a full time job, but Morbak gets it done by not taking “no for an answer and hustling hard all day.”

So, how do you get a bright new face for the bright new year? It will require some patience.

And a mirror. And a lot of product. You’re probably going to want to do it in the privacy of your bathroom. A man putting on makeup is likely to be met with a chuckle, if not a sneer, at places like Golds Hollywood and Crunch or Equinox. However, at WeHo’s 24 Hour Fitness there already are members who take over mirrors and sinks for a half-hour of facial work. Here’s the step-by-step process to follow once you’ve packed the bathroom cabinet with the necessary product:

1 2 3 /52

First, wash that face with a product that will remove those dead skin cells (they call it exfoliant in the beauty business). A search online or a stroll down the aisle of a local drug or grocery store or a place such as Target is a good way to find that.

Now, even if you aren’t going to use any makeup, you need to moisturize. In a place like West Hollywood where it’s always sunny, a moisturizer with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 is essential. Sure, you want that glam tan. But remember: When you’re 50 that tan will be hidden under the wrinkles and skin spots the sun began to create in your 20s.

Then you’ll want primer. That’s a lotion or cream that you put on your face before you start the makeup process. It makes the foundation or makeup a lot smoother and makes it last a lot longer.

Foundation is the next step, although not an essential one. In effect, it creates a new layer of skin, covering all of those blemishes. The trick is to find a foundation

one. If you want “guy brows” you’ll have to groom them so perfectly that they look like they haven’t been touched. You can use eyebrow pencils to create an

When it comes to the lip, lip balm is the guy’s form of lipstick. Your lips are likely colorful enough for a guy. But you do need to moisturize them to add a little glow and to keep them from drying out. Lip balm, which is cheap, does that.

Now you can get really artistic by contouring. The idea is to change the actual shape of your face, or at least how it is perceived. (Advice: search Google to find some YouTube lessons on this). In essence, you’re

WORKING IT/ 2017 FITNESS/

HOLIDAY OVER? IT’S TIME TO GET THAT BODY BACK IN SHAPE You’ve stuffed yourself with turkey, dressing, and some sort of tasty pie and, given that it’s a holiday, you’ve more than caught up on your sleep. That may explain why, as the New Year draws near, you don’t recognize who you see when you crawl out of bed and look at yourself in the mirror. Sure, eating properly helps. However, you aren’t going to get that body you were looking for in the mirror without exercise. Some of you may already have a workout regimen. Others may have been thinking about it for weeks (months? years?). If you’re already exercising, 2017 is the time to consider a different regimen to really shake your body up. And if you’re not, it’s time to get started. Pretty much every gym or health club offers weightlifting and cardio (you should consider engaging a trainer to help you craft a weight-lifting regimen). However there are many other options to choose from. Here are a few, along with suggestions from some remarkably fit West Hollywood residents and trainers. /55

CROSSFIT CrossFit is not only a workout program, it’s an actual brand. Greg Glassman and Lauren Jenai created the CrossFit model in 2000, and they opened a gym under the same name in Santa Cruz. The “cross” in CrossFit refers to the fact that it integrates a variety of exercises -- weightlifting, calisthenics and cardio. So you may find yourself using rowing machines and kettle bells as well as barbells and dumbbells. CrossFit is done in a class organized at a gym. Among the many options in and near West Hollywood are Brick at 7811 Santa Monica Boulevard, Pink Iron at 1106 North La Cienega Boulevard and Reebok CrossFit Lab at 8466 Melrose Avenue.

BOOT CAMP Think of boot camp as church for a new generation. The congregation is your new workout buddies, the preacher is your trainer and your heavenly goal is fitness. It’s the group aspect of boot camp that makes it most popular. Exercises vary according to the boot camp you attend. However, you’ll probably start out stretching and running some laps. Then you’ll find yourself lifting weights, doing sit-ups, pull-ups, and other intense exercises. You’ll likely wind up stretching with your new guy and gal pals. You may find yourself assigned to a team with a specific goal, which makes exercise more interesting for some. In our area options include Barry’s Bootcamp at 1106 La Cienega Boulevard, Basecamp Fitness at 8714 Santa Monica Boulevard, Fitness Factory at 650 North La Peer Drive and the Phoenix Effect at 7264 Melrose Avenue, some of whose /58

SPINNING You’re probably too old to remember the time when Daddy knelt down a few feet before you, smiling and waving you on as you awkwardly peddled forward for the first time on two wheels. When it comes to spinning, think of a tougher Daddy (or Mommy) seated on a stationery bike and challenging you and the crowd of cyclists around you to climb those imaginary hills or engage in intense sprints on your bicycle, which doesn’t actually move. Your spinning instructor likely will use music along with oral challenges to get you to push yourself. With spinning you can set your own resistance (try the flywheel) and speed. You also can track your heart rate. At the end of your class you’ll likely find yourself a little weak in the knees and a little short of breath and your knees feeling week. (Remember to always bring a towel and a bottle of water). That exhaustion is a good thing, because it means you’ve pushed yourself to build those muscles and that cardio capacity. Spin classes are very popular in West Hollywood, with some gyms or health clubs specializing in them. /60

Among those are Flywheel at 8599 Santa Monica Boulevard, Cycle House at 8511 Melrose Avenue and SoulCycle at 8570 Sunset Boulevard.

TRISTAN SCHUKRAFT

“THAT’S WHY MY SECOND FAVORITE GIFT WOULD BE A PACKAGE OF PERSONAL TRAINING SESSIONS.

HIS IDEAL CHRISTMAS GIFT? Tristan Schukraft is a digital entrepreneur, former model and a community activist. What gym membership card would he like to find under his Christmas tree? “I would choose Basecamp. Love the workouts there (especially when they are over.) It’s an intense 35 minutes (half bike, half weights), but you feel great (and muscles you never felt before) afterwards. “Staff really pushes you, but in a nice way, and people who go there are super nice and motivating as well. The benefit of Basecamp is it changes your routine. I work out five times a week so you can get into a rut.

I like working out with others as I learn new workouts that help me keep my routine fresh. If I had to choose a third item, I think at this point we just have to be cool sculpting, lol. Either that or massage at Equinox on Sunset to reward myself for all of that working out. “Technically it’s still at the gym, and you’re still working on your muscles. I would recommend Kurt or Xavier. The stocking stuffer: hiking Runyon followed by mimosas.”
